Transverse spin polarization as a novel probe of medium-induced transverse-momentum-broadening effect

The transverse polarization of $Λ$ hyperons within unpolarized jets originates from the transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) fragmentation function $D_{1T}^\perp (z, p_T, μ^2)$. In the vacuum environment, the QCD evolution of this TMD fragmentation function is governed by the Collins-Soper equation. However, in the presence of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) medium, the jet-medium interaction induces a transverse-momentum-broadening effect that modifies the QCD evolution. As a result, the transverse spin polarization of $Λ$ hyperons in relativistic heavy-ion collisions differs from that in $pp$ collisions. We demonstrate that this difference serves as a sensitive probe for studying jet-medium interaction, offering a novel perspective through the spin degree of freedom.

Accessing Polarized Fragmentation Functions at the Unpolarized EIC and BELLE Experiments

We briefly report our recent progress on the study of the polarized fragmentation functions of $Λ$ hyperon in unpolarized semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scatterings and electron-positron annihilations at low energies. In particular, we present a simple but practical method on how to measure the azimuthal-angle-dependent longitudinal polarization and the transverse polarization inside the production plane and bridge these observables to the corresponding structure functions and fragmentation functions at the leading twist. Our work diversifies the high energy reactions that can probe the polarized fragmentation functions.

Longitudinal and transverse polarizations of $Λ$ hyperon in unpolarized SIDIS and $e^+e^-$ annihilation

We make a systematic study of $Λ$ hyperon polarizations in unpolarized lepton induced semi-inclusive reactions such as $e^-N\to e^-ΛX$ and $e^+e^-\toΛh X$. We present the general form of cross sections in terms of structure functions obtained from a general kinematic analysis. This already shows that the produced hyperons can be polarized in three orthogonal directions, i.e., the longitudinal direction along the hyperon momentum, the normal direction of the production plane, and the transverse direction in the production plane. We present the parton model results at the leading twist and leading order in perturbative QCD and provide the expressions for these structure functions and polarizations in terms of parton distribution functions and fragmentation functions. We emphasize in particular that by studying the longitudinal polarization and the transverse polarization in the production plane, we can extract the corresponding chiral-odd fragmentation functions $H_{1Lq}^{\perpΛ}$, $H_{1Tq}^Λ$ and $H_{1Tq}^{\perpΛ}$. We also present numerical results of rough estimates utilizing available parameterizations of fragmentation functions and approximations. We discuss how to measure these polarizations and point out in particular that they can be carried out in future EIC and/or $e^+e^-$ annihilation experiments such as Belle.

Pursuing the Precision Study for Color Glass Condensate in Forward Hadron Productions

With the tremendous accomplishments of RHIC and the LHC experiments and the advent of the future Electron-Ion Collider on the horizon, the quest for compelling evidence of the color glass condensate (CGC) has become one of the most aspiring goals in the high energy Quantum Chromodynamics research. Pursuing this question requires developing the precision test of the CGC formalism. By systematically implementing the threshold resummation, we significantly improve the stability of the next-to-leading-order calculation in CGC for forward rapidity hadron productions in $pp$ and $pA$ collisions, especially in the high $p_T$ region, and obtain reliable descriptions of all existing data measured at RHIC and the LHC across all $p_T$ regions. Consequently, this technique can pave the way for the precision studies of the CGC next-to-leading-order predictions by confronting them with a large amount of precise data.

The Spin Alignment of Vector Mesons in High Energy pp Collisions

The spin alignment of vector meson produced in high energy reactions is determined by the spin-dependent fragmentation function $D_{1LL} (z,μ_f)$ that is shown to be independent of the polarization of the fragmenting quark. In this paper, we extract the spin-dependent fragmentation function $D_{1LL} (z,μ_f)$ from data on the spin alignment of $K^{*0}$ in $e^+e^-$ annihilation at LEP in two different scenarios and apply them to make predictions in $pp$ collisions. We make detailed analysis of contributions from different sub-processes and show that the spin alignment should be quite significant also in high energy $pp$ collisions.

Probing parton saturation with forward $Z^0$-boson production at small transverse momentum in p+p and p+A collisions

We calculate and compare the differential cross sections for forward $Z^0$-boson production at small transverse momentum, in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions, using both the collinear and dilute-dense factorization frameworks. In both cases, we implement a Sudakov resummation of the large logarithms generated by soft-gluon emissions, which is essential in order to describe the transverse momentum distribution of forward $Z^0$ bosons measured at the Tevatron and the LHC. We further compute the nuclear modification factor in the dilute-dense framework, hoping to single out signals of saturation effects at small values of $x$. Our predictions are compared with those obtained in the collinear factorization framework, using two different nuclear parton distribution functions.

The Collectivity of Heavy Mesons in Proton-Nucleus Collisions

Using a model based on the Color Glass Condensate framework and the dilute-dense factorization, we systematically study the azimuthal angular correlations between a heavy flavor meson and a light reference particle in proton-nucleus collisions. The obtained second harmonic coefficients (also known as the elliptic flows) for $J/ψ$ and $D^0$ agree with recent experimental data from the LHC. We also provide predictions for the elliptic flows of $Υ$ and $B$ meson, which can be measured in the near future at the LHC. This work can shed light on the physics origin of the collectivity phenomenon in the collisions of small systems.

Medium-Induced Transverse Momentum Broadening via Forward Dijet Correlations

Dijet azimuthal angle correlation is arguably one of the most direct probes of the medium-induced broadening effects. The evidence for such broadening, however, is not yet clearly observed within the precision of current mid-rapidity measurements at RHIC and the LHC. We show that the dijet correlation in forward rapidity from the future LHC RUN3, aided by forward detector upgrades, can reveal this broadening thanks to the steeper jet spectra, suppressed vacuum radiations and lower underlying event background, with a sensitivity comparable to that of the future high-luminosity Au+Au run at RHIC. Dijet correlation measurements at the two facilities together can provide powerful constraints on the temperature dependence of medium transport properties.

Tensor polarization dependent fragmentation functions and e+e-\to V πX at high energies

We present the systematic results for three dimensional fragmentation functions of spin one hadrons defined via quark-quark correlator. There are totally 72 such fragmentation functions, among them 18 are twist-2, 36 are twist-3 and 18 are twist-4. We also present the relationships between the twist-3 parts and those defined via quark-gluon-quark correlator obtained from the QCD equation of motion. We show that two particle semi-inclusive hadron production process $e^+e^-\to VπX$ at high energies is one of the best places to study the three-dimensional tensor polarization dependent fragmentation functions. We present the general kinematic analysis of this process and show that the cross section should be expressed in terms of 81 independent structure functions. After that we present parton model results for the hadronic tensor, the structure functions, the azimuthal and spin asymmetries in terms of these gauge invariant fragmentation functions at the leading order pQCD up to twist-3.

Higher twist effects in $e^+e^-$ annihilation at high energies

In the two papers published recently, we apply collinear expansion to both inclusive ($e^+ e^- \to h+X$) and semi-inclusive ($e^+ e^- \to h + \bar q + X$) hadron production in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation to derive a formalism suitable for a systematic study of leading as well as higher twist contributions to fragmentation functions at the tree level. We carry out the calculations for hadrons with spin-0, spin-1/2 as well as spin-1. This proceeding is mainly a summary of these two papers.

Three dimensional fragmentation functions from the quark-quark correlator

We present the systematic results for three dimensional fragmentation functions defined via the quark-quark correlator for hadrons with spin 0, 1/2 and 1 respectively. These results are presented in terms of a spin independent part, a vector polarization dependent part and a tensor polarization dependent part. For spin 0 hadrons, only the spin independent part is needed, for spin 1/2 hadron, the polarization independent and vector polarization dependent parts are present, while for spin 1 hadrons, all the three parts exist. We discuss the general properties of these fragmentation functions and also present the corresponding results when transverse momentum is integrated.

Three Dimensional Imaging of the Nucleon and Semi-Inclusive High Energy Reactions

We present a short overview on the studies of transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions of the nucleon. The aim of such studies is to provide a three dimensional imagining of the nucleon and a comprehensive description of semi-inclusive high energy reactions. By comparing with the theoretical framework that we have for the inclusive deep inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering and the one-dimensional imaging of the nucleon, we summarize what we need to do in order to construct such a comprehensive theoretical framework for semi-inclusive processes in terms of three dimensional gauge invariant parton distributions. After that, we present an overview of what we have already achieved with emphasize on the theoretical framework for semi-inclusive reactions in leading order perturbative QCD but with leading and higher twist contributions. We summarize in particular the results for the differential cross section and the azimuthal spin asymmetries in terms of the gauge invariant transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions. We also briefly summarize the available experimental results on semi-inclusive reactions and parameterizations of transverse momentum dependent parton distributions extracted from them and make an outlook for the future studies.

Leading and higher twist contributions in semi-inclusive e+e- annihilation at high energies

By applying the collinear expansion to the semi-inclusive hadron production process $e^++e^-\to h+\bar q(jet)+X$ at high energies, we construct a theoretical framework where the leading and higher twist contributions at the leading perturbative QCD can be calculated systematically. With this framework, we calculate the contributions up to twist-3 for spin-0, spin-1/2 and spin-1 hadrons respectively. We present the results for the hadronic tensors, the differential cross sections, the azimuthal asymmetries, and the polarizations of the hadrons.

Higher twist contribution to fragmentation function in inclusive hadron production in e^+e^- annihilation

We apply collinear expansion to inclusive hadron production in $e^+e^-$ annihilation and derive a formalism suitable for systematic study of leading as well as higher twist contributions to fragmentation functions at the tree level. We make the calculations for hadrons with spin-0, spin-1/2 as well as spin-1 and obtain the results in terms of different components of fragmentation functions for the hadronic tensors, the differential cross section as well as hadron polarizations in different cases. The results show a number of interesting features such as the existence of transverse polarization for spin-1/2 hadrons at the twist-3 level, the quark polarization independence of the spin alignment of vector mesons.
