Extended dynamic mode decomposition with dictionary learning using neural ordinary differential equations

Nonlinear phenomena can be analyzed via linear techniques using operator-theoretic approaches. Data-driven method called the extended dynamic mode decomposition (EDMD) and its variants, which approximate the Koopman operator associated with the nonlinear phenomena, have been rapidly developing by incorporating machine learning methods. Neural ordinary differential equations (NODEs), which are a neural network equipped with a continuum of layers, and have high parameter and memory efficiencies, have been proposed. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to perform EDMD using NODEs. NODEs are used to find a parameter-efficient dictionary which provides a good finite-dimensional approximation of the Koopman operator. We show the superiority of the parameter efficiency of the proposed method through numerical experiments.

Nonlinear phase-amplitude reduction of delay-induced oscillations

Spontaneous oscillations induced by time delays are observed in many real-world systems. Phase reduction theory for limit-cycle oscillators described by delay-differential equations (DDEs) has been developed to analyze their synchronization properties, but it is applicable only when the perturbation applied to the oscillator is sufficiently weak. In this study, we formulate a nonlinear phase-amplitude reduction theory for limit-cycle oscillators described by DDEs on the basis of the Floquet theorem, which is applicable when the oscillator is subjected to perturbations of moderate intensity. We propose a numerical method to evaluate the leading Floquet eigenvalues, eigenfunctions, and adjoint eigenfunctions necessary for the reduction and derive a set of low-dimensional nonlinear phase-amplitude equations approximately describing the oscillator dynamics. By analyzing an analytically tractable oscillator model with a cubic nonlinearity, we show that the asymptotic phase of the oscillator state in an infinite-dimensional state space can be approximately evaluated and non-trivial bistability of the oscillation amplitude caused by moderately strong periodic perturbations can be predicted on the basis of the derived phase-amplitude equations. We further analyze a model of gene-regulatory oscillator and illustrate that the reduced equations can elucidate the mechanism of its complex dynamics under non-weak perturbations, which may be relevant to real physiological phenomena such as circadian rhythm sleep disorders.

A criterion for timescale decomposition of external inputs for generalized phase reduction of limit-cycle oscillators

The phase reduction method is a dimension reduction method for weakly driven limit-cycle oscillators, which has played an important role in the theoretical analysis of synchro- nization phenomena. Recently, we proposed a generalization of the phase reduction method [W. Kurebayashi et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 2013]. This generalized phase reduction method can robustly predict the dynamics of strongly driven oscillators, for which the conventional phase reduction method fails. In this generalized method, the external input to the oscillator should be properly decomposed into a slowly varying component and remaining weak fluctua- tions. In this paper, we propose a simple criterion for timescale decomposition of the external input, which gives accurate prediction of the phase dynamics and enables us to systematically apply the generalized phase reduction method to a general class of limit-cycle oscillators. The validity of the criterion is confirmed by numerical simulations.

Phase Reduction Method for Strongly Perturbed Limit Cycle Oscillators

The phase reduction method for limit cycle oscillators subjected to weak perturbations has significantly contributed to theoretical investigations of rhythmic phenomena. We here propose a generalized phase reduction method that is also applicable to strongly perturbed limit cycle oscillators. The fundamental assumption of our method is that the perturbations can be decomposed into a slowly varying component as compared to the amplitude relaxation time and remaining weak fluctuations. Under this assumption, we introduce a generalized phase parameterized by the slowly varying component and derive a closed equation for the generalized phase describing the oscillator dynamics. The proposed method enables us to explore a broader class of rhythmic phenomena, in which the shape and frequency of the oscillation may vary largely because of the perturbations. We illustrate our method by analyzing the synchronization dynamics of limit cycle oscillators driven by strong periodic signals. It is shown that the proposed method accurately predicts the synchronization properties of the oscillators, while the conventional method does not.
