Synthesizing five-body interaction in a superconducting quantum circuit

Synthesizing many-body interaction Hamiltonian is a central task in quantum simulation. However, it is challenging to synthesize interactions including more than two spins. Borrowing tools from quantum optics, we synthesize five-body spin-exchange interaction in a superconducting quantum circuit by simultaneously exciting four independent qubits with time-energy correlated photon quadruples generated from a qudit. During the dynamic evolution of the five-body interaction, a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state is generated in a single step with fidelity estimated to be $0.685$. We compare the influence of noise on the three-, four- and five-body interaction as a step toward answering the question on the quantum origin of chiral molecules. We also demonstrate a many-body Mach-Zehnder interferometer which potentially has a Heisenberg-limit sensitivity. This study paves a way for quantum simulation involving many-body interactions and high excited states of quantum circuits.

Exact Asymptotics for Learning Tree-Structured Graphical Models with Side Information: Noiseless and Noisy Samples

Given side information that an Ising tree-structured graphical model is homogeneous and has no external field, we derive the exact asymptotics of learning its structure from independently drawn samples. Our results, which leverage the use of probabilistic tools from the theory of strong large deviations, refine the large deviation (error exponents) results of Tan, Anandkumar, Tong, and Willsky [IEEE Trans. on Inform. Th., 57(3):1714--1735, 2011] and strictly improve those of Bresler and Karzand [Ann. Statist., 2020]. In addition, we extend our results to the scenario in which the samples are observed in random noise. In this case, we show that they strictly improve on the recent results of Nikolakakis, Kalogerias, and Sarwate [Proc. AISTATS, 1771--1782, 2019]. Our theoretical results demonstrate keen agreement with experimental results for sample sizes as small as that in the hundreds.

Exchange and Distribution of Multipartite Entanglement via Atomic Coherence

We present a convenient and efficient way to exchange and distribute multipartite entangled state via atomic coherence induced by electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an atomic ensemble. By using the EIT-based nondegenerate four-wave mixing processes, the generation, exchange, and distribution of light-light, atom-light, and atom-atom multipartite entanglement can be achieved in a deterministic way with only coherent light fields. This EIT-induced atomic coherence acts as a quantum information processor and has the function of quantum beam splitter, quantum frequency converter, quantum entangler, and quantum repeater, which greatly facilitates the operations in quantum information processing, and holds promising applications in realistic scalable quantum communication and quantum networks

Losses-based test of wave-particle duality with Mach-Zehnder interferometers

Wave-particle duality of photons with losses in the Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is investigated experimentally and theoretically. The experiment is done with the standard MZI with the beam splitter or the beam merger being continuously varied. The losses are deliberately introduced either inside the MZI (the two arms between the beam splitter and beam mergers) or outside the MZI (after the beam merger). It is proved that the unbalanced losses have great influence on the predictability $P$ (particle nature) and visibility $V$ (wave nature). For the former case the duality inequality holds while for the later the duality inequality is ``violated''. We get $P^2+V^2>1$. This ``violation'' could be eliminated in principle by switching the two paths and detectors and then averaging the results. The observed results can be exactly explained theoretically. The experiment is done with coherent beam, instead of single photons, and we have proved that they are exactly equivalent in duality experiment with MZI.

Quantum tunneling time of a Bose-Einstein condensate traversing through a laser-induced potential barrier

We theoretically study the effect of atomic nonlinearity on the tunneling time in the case of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) traversing the laser-induced potential barrier. The atomic nonlinearity is controlled to appear only in the region of the barrier by employing the Feshbach resonance technique to tune interatomic interaction in the tunneling process. Numerical simulation shows that the atomic nonlinear effect dramatically changes the tunneling behavior of the BEC matter wave packet, and results in the violation of Hartman effect and the occurrence of negative tunneling time.

Storage States in Ultracold Collective Atoms

We present a complete theoretical description of atomic storage states in the multimode framework by including spatial coherence in atomic collective operators and atomic storage states. We show that atomic storage states are Dicke states with the maximum cooperation number. In some limits, a set of multimode atomic storage states has been established in correspondence with multimode Fock states of the electromagnetic field. This gives better understanding of both the quantum and coherent information of optical field can be preserved and recovered in ultracold medium. In this treatment, we discuss in detail both the adiabatic and dynamic transfer of quantum information between the field and the ultracold medium.
