Thin liquid film as an optical nonlinear-nonlocal medium and memory element in integrated optofluidic reservoir computer

Understanding light-matter interaction enables harnessing physical effects to translate into new capabilities realized in modern integrated photonics platforms. Here, we present the design and characterization of optofluidic components in integrated photonics platform, and numerically predict a series of novel physical effects which rely on thermocapillary-driven interaction between waveguide modes to topography changes of optically thin liquid dielectric film. Our results indicate that this coupling introduces substantial self-induced phase change in a single channel waveguide, transmittance through Bragg grating waveguide and nonlocal interaction between adjacent waveguides. We then employ the self-induced phase change together with the inherent built-in finite relaxation time of the liquid film, to demonstrate that its light-driven deformation can serve as a reservoir computer capable to perform digital and analog tasks, where the gas-liquid interface operates both as a nonlinear actuator and as an optical memory element.

The effect of DNA bases permutation on surface enhanced Raman scattering spectrum

Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) process results in a tremendous increase of Raman scattering cross section of molecules adsorbed to plasmonic metals and influenced by numerous physico-chemical factors such as geometry and optical properties of the metal surface, orientation of chemisorbed molecules and chemical environment. While SERS holds promise for single molecule sensitivity and optical sensing of DNA sequences, more detailed understanding of the rich physico-chemical interplay between various factors is needed to enhance predictive power of existing and future SERS-based DNA sensing platforms. In this work we report on experimental results indicating that SERS spectra of adsorbed single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) isomers depend on the order on which individual bases appear in the 3-base long ssDNA due to intra-molecular interaction between DNA bases. Furthermore, we experimentally demonstrate that the effect holds under more general conditions when the molecules don't experience chemical enhancement due to resonant charge transfer effect and also under standard Raman scattering without electromagnetic or chemical enhancements. Our numerical simulations qualitatively support the experimental findings and indicate that base permutation results in modification of both Raman and chemically enhanced Raman spectra.

Electroosmotic flow in Hele-Shaw configurations with non-uniform surface charge

We present an analytical study, validated by numerical simulations, of electroosmotic flow in a Hele-Shaw cell with non-uniform surface charge patterning. Applying the lubrication approximation and assuming thin electric double layer, we obtain a pair of uncoupled Poisson equations which relate the pressure and the stream function, respectively, to gradients in the zeta potential distribution parallel and perpendicular to the applied electric field. We solve the governing equations for the fundamental case of a disk with uniform zeta potential and show that the flow-field in the outer region takes the form of a pure dipole. We illustrate the ability to generate complex flow-fields around smooth convex regions by superposition of such disks with uniform zeta potential and a uniform pressure driven flow. This method may be useful for future on-chip devices, allowing flow control without the need for mechanical components.

Normalized General Relativity: Non-closed Universe and Zero Cosmological Constant

We discuss the cosmological constant problem, at the minisuperspace level, within the framework of the so-called normalized general relativity (NGR). We prove that the Universe cannot be closed, and reassure that the accompanying cosmological constant $Λ$ generically vanishes, at least classically. The theory does allow, however, for a special class of $Λ\not=0$ solutions which are associated with static closed Einstein universe and with Eddington-Lema\^ıtre universe.

Can an evolving Universe host a static event horizon?

We prove the existence of general relativistic perfect fluid black hole solutions, and demonstrate the phenomenon for the $P=wρ$ class of equations of state. While admitting a local time-like Killing vector on the event horizon itself, the various black hole configurations are necessarily time dependent (thereby avoiding a well known no-go theorem) away from the horizon. Consistently, Hawking's imaginary time periodicity is globally manifest on the entire spacetime manifold.

On The Problem of Vacuum energy in Brane Theories

We point out that modern brane theories suffer from a severe vacuum energy problem. To be specific, the Casimir energy associated with the matter fields confined to the brane, is stemming from the one and the same localization mechanism which forms the brane itself, and is thus generically unavoidable. Possible practical solutions are discussed, including in particular spontaneously broken supersymmetry, and quantum mechanically induced brane tension.
