Local Scale Invariant Kaluza-Klein Reduction

We perform the 4-dimensional Kaluza-Klein (KK) reduction of the 5-dimensional locally scale invariant Weyl-Dirac gravity. While compactification unavoidably introduces an explicit length scale into the theory, it does it in such a way that the KK radius can be integrated out from the low energy regime, leaving the KK vacuum to still enjoy local scale invariance at the classical level. Imitating a $U(1)\times\tilde{U}(1)$ gauge theory, the emerging 4D theory is characterized by a kinetic Maxwell-Weyl mixing whose diagonalization procedure is carried out in detail. In particular, we identify the unique linear combination which defines the 4D Weyl vector, and fully classify the 4D scalar sector. The later consists of (using Weyl language) a co-scalar and two in-scalars. The analysis is performed for a general KK $m$-ansatz, parametrized by the power $m$ of the scalar field which factorizes the 4D metric. The no-ghost requirement, for example, is met provided $-\frac{1}{2}\leq m \leq 0$. An $m$-dependent dictionary is then established between the original 5D Brans-Dicke parameter $ω_5$ and the resulting 4D $ω_4$. The critical $ω_5=-\frac{4}{3}$ is consistently mapped into critical $ω_4 = -\frac{3}{2}$. The KK reduced Maxwell-Weyl kinetic mixing cannot be scaled away as it is mediated by a 4D in-scalar (residing within the 5D Weyl vector). The mixing is explicitly demonstrated within the Einstein frame for the special physically motivated choice of $m=-\frac{1}{3}$. For instance, a super critical Brans-Dicke parameter induces a tiny positive contribution to the original (if introduced via the 5-dimensional scalar potential) cosmological constant. Finally, some no-scale quantum cosmological aspects are studied at the universal mini-superspace level.

Ricci linear Weyl/Maxwell mutual sourcing

We elevate the field theoretical similarities between Maxwell and Weyl vector fields into a full local scale/gauge invariant Weyl/Maxwell mutual sourcing theory. In its preliminary form, and exclusively in four dimensions, the associated Lagrangian is dynamical scalar field free, hosts no fermion matter fields, and Holdom kinetic mixing is switched off. The mutual sourcing term is then necessarily spacetime curvature (not just metric) dependent, and inevitably Ricci linear, suggesting that a non-vanishing spacetime curvature can in principle induce an electromagnetic current. In its mature form, however, the Weyl/Maxwell mutual sourcing idea serendipitously constitutes a novel variant of the gravitational Weyl-Dirac (incorporating Brans-Dicke) theory. Counter intuitively, and again exclusively in four dimensions, the optional quartic scalar potential gets consistently replaced by a Higgs-like potential, such that the co-divergence of the Maxwell vector field resembles a conformal vacuum expectation value.

Is spacetime absolutely or just most probably Lorentzian?

Pre-gauging the cosmological scale factor $a(t)$ does not introduce unphysical degrees of freedom into the exact FLRW classical solution. It seems to lead, however, to a non-dynamical mini superspace. The missing ingredient, a generalised momentum enjoying canonical Dirac (rather than Poisson) brackets with the lapse function $n(t)$, calls for measure scaling which can be realised by means of a scalar field. The latter is essential for establishing a geometrical connection with the 5-dimensional Kaluza-Klein Schwarzschild-deSitter black hole. Contrary to the Hartle-Hawking approach, (i) The $t$-independent wave function $ψ(a)$ is traded for an explicit $t$-dependent $ψ(n, t)$, (ii) The classical FLRW configuration does play a major role in the structure of the 'most classical' cosmological wave packet, and (iii) The non-singular Euclid/Lorentz crossovers get quantum mechanically smeared.

From DeWitt initial condition to Cosmological Quantum Entanglement

A gravity-anti-gravity (GaG) odd linear dilaton action offers an eternal inflation evolution governed by the unified (cosmological constant plus radiation) equation of state $ρ-3P=4Λ$. At the mini superspace level, a 'two-particle' variant of the no-boundary proposal, notably 'one-particle' energy dependent, is encountered. While a GaG-odd wave function can only host a weak Big Bang boundary condition, albeit for any $k$, a strong Big Bang boundary condition requires a GaG-even entangled wave function, and singles out $k=0$ flat space. The locally most probable values for the cosmological scale factor and the dilaton field form a grid $\{a^2,aϕ\}\sim\sqrt{4n_1+1}\pm\sqrt{4n_2+1}$.

Normalized General Relativity: Non-closed Universe and Zero Cosmological Constant

We discuss the cosmological constant problem, at the minisuperspace level, within the framework of the so-called normalized general relativity (NGR). We prove that the Universe cannot be closed, and reassure that the accompanying cosmological constant $Λ$ generically vanishes, at least classically. The theory does allow, however, for a special class of $Λ\not=0$ solutions which are associated with static closed Einstein universe and with Eddington-Lema\^ıtre universe.

Quantum Black Hole Wave Packet: Average Area Entropy and Temperature Dependent Width

A quantum Schwarzschild black hole is described, at the mini super spacetime level, by a non-singular wave packet composed of plane wave eigenstates of the momentum Dirac-conjugate to the mass operator. The entropy of the mass spectrum acquires then independent contributions from the average mass and the width. Hence, Bekenstein's area entropy is formulated using the $\langle \text{mass}^2 \rangle$ average, leaving the $\langle \text{mass} \rangle$ average to set the Hawking temperature. The width function peaks at the Planck scale for an elementary (zero entropy, zero free energy) micro black hole of finite rms size, and decreases Doppler-like towards the classical limit.

Schwarzschild Mass Uncertainty

Applying Dirac's procedure to $r$-dependent constrained systems, we derive a reduced total Hamiltonian, resembling an upside down harmonic oscillator, which generates the Schwarzschild solution in the mini super-spacetime. Associated with the now $r$-dependent Schrodinger equation is a tower of localized Guth-Pi-Barton wave packets, orthonormal and non-singular, admitting equally spaced average-'energy' levels. Our approach is characterized by a universal quantum mechanical uncertainty structure which enters the game already at the flat spacetime level, and accompanies the massive Schwarzschild sector for any arbitrary mean mass. The average black hole horizon surface area is linearly quantized.

Thermal Hawking Broadening and Statistical Entropy of Black Hole Wave Packet

The quantum mechanical structure of Schwarzschild black hole is probed, in the mini super spacetime, by means of a non-singular minimal uncertainty Hartle-Hawking wave packet. The Compton width of the microstate probability distribution is translated into a thermal Hawking broadening of the mass spectrum. The statistical entropy is analytically calculated using the Fowler prescription. While the exact Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is recovered at the semi classical limit, the accompanying logarithmic tail gives rise to a Planck size minimal entropy black wave packet.

Can an evolving Universe host a static event horizon?

We prove the existence of general relativistic perfect fluid black hole solutions, and demonstrate the phenomenon for the $P=wρ$ class of equations of state. While admitting a local time-like Killing vector on the event horizon itself, the various black hole configurations are necessarily time dependent (thereby avoiding a well known no-go theorem) away from the horizon. Consistently, Hawking's imaginary time periodicity is globally manifest on the entire spacetime manifold.

Restoring Time Dependence into Quantum Cosmology

Mini superspace cosmology treats the scale factor $a(t)$, the lapse function $n(t)$, and an optional dilation field $ϕ(t)$ as canonical variables. While pre-fixing $n(t)$ means losing the Hamiltonian constraint, pre-fixing $a(t)$ is serendipitously harmless at this level. This suggests an alternative to the Hartle-Hawking approach, where the pre-fixed $a(t)$ and its derivatives are treated as explicit functions of time, leaving $n(t)$ and a now mandatory $ϕ(t)$ to serve as canonical variables. The naive gauge pre-fix $a(t)=const$ is clearly forbidden, causing evolution to freeze altogether, so pre-fixing the scale factor, say $a(t)=t$, necessarily introduces explicit time dependence into the Lagrangian. Invoking Dirac's prescription for dealing with constraints, we construct the corresponding mini superspace time dependent total Hamiltonian, and calculate the Dirac brackets, characterized by $\{n,ϕ\}_D\neq 0$, which are promoted to commutation relations in the quantum theory.

Slinky evolution of domain wall brane cosmology

Invoking an initial symmetry between the time $ t $ and some extra spatial dimension $ y $, we discuss a novel scenario where the dynamical formation of the 4-dim brane and its cosmological evolution are induced simultaneously by a common $ t<->y $ symmetry breaking mechanism. The local maximum of the underlying scalar potential is mapped onto a 'watershed' curve in the $ (t,y) $ plane; the direction tangent to this curve is identified as the cosmic time, whereas the perpendicular direction serves locally as the extra spatial dimension. Special attention is devoted to the so-called slinky configurations, whose brane cosmology is characterized by a decaying cosmological constant along the watershed curve. Such a slinky solution is first constructed within a simplified case where the watershed is constrained by $ y = 0 $. The physical requirements for a slinky configuration to generate a realistic model of cosmological evolution are then discussed in a more elaborated framework.

Two-Sided Gravitational Mirror: Sealing off Curvature Singularities

A gravitational mirror is a non-singular finite redshift surface which bounces all incident null geodesics. While a white mirror (outward bouncing) resembles 't Hooft's brick wall, a black mirror (inward bouncing) offers a novel mechanism for sealing off curvature singularities. The geometry underlying a two-sided mirror is characterized by a single signature change, to be contrasted with the signature flip which governs the black hole geometry. To demonstrate the phenomenon analytically, we derive an exact, static, radially symmetric, two-sided mirror solution, which asymptotes the massless BTZ black hole background, and then probe the local structure of a massive mirror.

Holographic Entropy Packing inside a Black Hole

If general relativity is spontaneously induced, the black hole limit is governed by a phase transition which occurs precisely at the would have been horizon. The exterior Schwarzschild solution then connects with a novel core of vanishing spatial volume. The Kruskal structure, admitting the exact Hawking imaginary time periodicity, is recovered, with the conic defect defused at the origin, rather than at the horizon. The entropy stored inside \textbf{any} interior sphere is universal, equal to a quarter of its surface area, thus locally saturating the 't Hooft-Susskind holographic bound. The associated Komar mass and material energy functions are non-singular.

Holographic Shell Model: Stack Data Structure inside Black Holes

We suggest that bits of information inhabit, universally and holographically, the entire black hole interior, a bit per a light sheet unit interval of order Planck area difference. The number of distinguishable (tagged by a binary code) configurations, counted within the context of a discrete holographic shell model, is given by the Catalan series. The area entropy formula is recovered, including the universal logarithmic correction, and the equipartition of mass per degree of freedom is proven. The black hole information storage resembles a stack data structure.

Spontaneously Induced General Relativity: Holographic Interior for Reissner-Nordstrom Exterior

If general relativity is spontaneously induced, that is if the reciprocal Newton constant serves as a VEV, the electrically charged black hole limit is governed by a Davidson-Gurwich phase transition which occurs precisely at the would have been outer horizon. The transition profile which connects the exterior Reissner-Nordstrom solution with the novel interior is analytically derived. The inner core is characterized by a vanishing spatial volume and constant surface gravity, and in some respects, resembles a maximally stretched horizon. The Komar mass residing inside any concentric interior sphere is proportional to the surface area of that sphere, and consequently, is non-negative definite and furthermore non-singular at the origin. The Kruskal structure is recovered, admitting the exact Hawking imaginary time periodicity, but unconventionally, with the conic defect defused at the origin. The corresponding holographic entropy packing locally saturates the 't Hooft-Susskind-Bousso holographic bound, thus making the core Nature's ultimate information storage.

Hollowgraphy Driven Holography: Black Hole with Vanishing Volume Interior

Hawking-Bekenstein entropy formula seems to tell us that no quantum degrees of freedom can reside in the interior of a black hole. We suggest that this is a consequence of the fact that the volume of any interior sphere of finite surface area simply vanishes. Obviously, this is not the case in general relativity. However, we show that such a phenomenon does occur in various gravitational theories which admit a spontaneously induced general relativity. In such theories, due to a phase transition (one parameter family degenerates) which takes place precisely at the would have been horizon, the recovered exterior Schwarzschild solution connects, by means of a self-similar transition profile, with a novel 'hollow' interior exhibiting a vanishing spatial volume and a locally varying Newton constant. This constitutes the so-called 'hollowgraphy' driven holography.

Artifact Dark Matter from Unified Brane Gravity

Adopting Dirac's brane variation prescription, the energy-momentum tensor of a brane gets supplemented by a geometrical (embedding originated) dark component. While the masslessness of the graviton is preserved, and the Newton force law is recovered, the corresponding Newton constant is necessarily lower than the one which governs FRW cosmology. This has the potential to puzzle out cosmological dark matter, a subsequent conjecture concerning galactic dark matter follows.

preprint2009arXiv

On The Problem of Vacuum energy in Brane Theories

We point out that modern brane theories suffer from a severe vacuum energy problem. To be specific, the Casimir energy associated with the matter fields confined to the brane, is stemming from the one and the same localization mechanism which forms the brane itself, and is thus generically unavoidable. Possible practical solutions are discussed, including in particular spontaneously broken supersymmetry, and quantum mechanically induced brane tension.

Cold Dark Matter from Dark Energy

Dark energy/matter unification is first demonstrated within the framework of a simplified model. Geodetic evolution of a cosmological constant dominated bubble Universe, free of genuine matter, is translated into a specific FRW cosmology whose effectively induced dark component highly resembles the cold dark matter ansatz. The realistic extension constitutes a dark soliton which bridges past (radiation and/or matter dominated) and future (cosmological constant dominated) Einstein regimes; its experimental signature is a moderate redshift dependent cold dark matter deficiency function.

Threefold Family of Charged Spin-1/2 Dirac Bubbles

We extend Dirac's `extensible model of the electron' to include spin and family. $U(1)_{e.m.}$ charge conservation on the bubble is translated into a secondary $U(1)_{g}$ world-manifold gauge principle. Reflecting the secondary magnetic monopole configuration on spatial $S^2$, the harmonic excitations may furnish half integer $SU(2)_{spin}\otimes U(1)_{g}$ representations. Our spin--$1/2$ `electron' is described by four world-manifold scalar fields. Its three varieties are associated with different minima of the (6th--order) surface-tension scalar potential.
