Spherical black holes with minimally coupled scalar cloud/hair in Einstein-Born-Infeld gravity

Previous studies showed that, in the presence of a simple and well-motivated self-interaction scalar potential, asymptotically flat and spherical black holes can carry minimally coupled and charged scalar cloud/hair in Einstein-Maxwell gravity. We extend these studies to Einstein-Born-Infeld gravity to consider the effect of nonlinearity of the electromagnetic field. Series of spherical cloudy/hairy black hole solutions are constructed numerically. Results show that increasing the Born-Infeld coupling constant $b$ will make the domain of existence of the solution shrink or even disappear when $b$ is large enough. This implies that, competing with the gravitation, nonlinearity of the electromagnetic field will make the formation of scalar cloud/hair harder or even impossible.

Object picture of scalar field perturbation on Kerr black hole in scalar-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory

Scalar perturbations around the Kerr black hole in scalar-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (sEGB) theory are studied in the time domain. To overcome the "outer boundary problem" that usually encountered in traditional numerical calculations, we apply the hyperboloidal compactification technique to perform a $(2+1)$-dimensional simulation aiming to obtain a precise object picture of the wave propagation under the scalar field perturbation. We find that the big enough coupling constant between the scalar field and the Gauss-Bonnet curvature is responsible to destroy the original Kerr black hole. The breakdown of the Kerr spacetime happens earlier and the instability becomes more violent when the coupling becomes stronger. We further present object confirmations on the special case for the negative coupling where there exists a minimum rotation and below which the instability can never happen no matter how strong the coupling is. We also illustrate the fine structure property in the quasinormal ringing frequency once there is the coupling, and present the characteristic imprint of the sEGB theory. We expect that such a fine structure can be detected in the future gravitational wave observation to test the sEGB theory.

Superradiance and stability of the novel 4D charged Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole

We investigated the superradiance and stability of the novel 4D charged Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole which is recently inspired by Glavan and Lin [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 081301 (2020)]. We found that the positive Gauss-Bonnet coupling consant $α$ enhances the superradiance, while the negative $α$ suppresses it. The condition for superradiant instability is proved. We also worked out the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of the charged Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole and found that the real part of all the QNMs live beyond the superradiance condition and the imaginary parts are all negative. Therefore this black hole is superradiant stable. When $α$ makes the black hole extremal, there are normal modes.

Photon orbits and phase transitions in Born-Infeld-dilaton black holes

Relations between photon orbits and thermodynamical phase transitions are explored in Born-Infeld-dilaton-AdS black hole. The coupling between the electromagnetic field and the dialton field is chosen such that the full phase diagram contains zeroth-order and first-order phase transitions as well as RPT. We find that there exist non-monotonic beahviors of the photon orbit radius $r_{ps}$ and the minimum impact parameter $u_{ps}$ which signal the existence of the various phase transitions. In particular, the marginal value of pressure under which RPT occur can be read off from these behaviors. Along the co-existing lines, there are changes of both $r_{ps}$ and $u_{ps}$, whose dependence on the transition temperature show characteristic behaviors signalling the existence of RPT. Moreover, the critical exponents of $Δr_{ps}$ and $Δu_{ps}$ are found to take a universal value $\frac{1}{2}$. These results imply that $r_{ps}$ and $u_{ps}$ can be used as order parameters to describe BH phase transitions.

Charged scalar gravitational collapse in de Sitter spacetime

We study the charged scalar collapse in de Sitter spacetimes. With the electric charge, there is one more competitor to join the competition of dynamics in the gravitational collapse. We find that two factors can influence the electric charge. If we just adjust the charge conjugation, the electric charge effect is always perturbative at the black hole threshold. The electric charge can also be influenced by the initial conditions of perturbations. These initial parameters can be tuned to control the competition in dynamics and present us new and rich physics in the process of gravitational collapse. We give physical explanations on these phenomena found in dynamics. Furthermore we show that the properties of the gravitational collapse are universal and do not depend on spacetime dimensions.

Holographic Schwinger effect in a confining background with Gauss-Bonnet corrections

We study the effect of higher-derivative terms on holographic Schwinger effect by introducing the Gauss-Bonnet term in the gravity sector. Anti-de Sitter (AdS) soliton background is considered which is dual to confining phase of the boundary field theory. By calculating the potential between the produced pair, we find that larger Gauss-Bonnet factor $λ$ makes the pair lighter. We apply numerical method to calculate the production rate for various cases. The results show that the Gauss-Bonnet term enhances the production rate. The critical behaviors near the two critical values of the electric field are also investigated, and it is found that the two critical indexes are not affected by the Gauss-Bonnet term and thus suggests a possible universality.

Holographic superconductor in hyperscaling violation geometry with Maxwell-dilaton coupling

We re-investigate the holographic superconductor in hyperscaling violation geometry by considering the coupling between the probed Maxwell field and the background dilaton. We find that the phenomenon of superconductivity still exists, but with properties affected by such a coupling. The critical temperature decreases as the hyperscaling violation exponent is increased. The influence of the dynamical exponent on the critical temperature becomes complicated which depends on the mass of the probed scalar field and the hyperscaling violation exponent. The results of the frequency gap show a large deviation from the expected universal relation.

Charged Scalar Perturbations around Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger Black Holes

We examine the stability of the Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger (GHS) black hole under charged scalar perturbations. We find that different from the neutral scalar field perturbations, only two numerical methods, such as the continued fraction method and the asymptotic iteration method, can keep high efficiency and accuracy requirements in the frequency domain computations. The comparisons of the efficiency between these two methods have also been done. Employing the appropriate numerical method, we show that the GHS black hole is always stable against charged scalar perturbations. This is different from the result obtained in the de Sitter and Anti-de Sitter black holes. Furthermore we argue that in the GHS black hole background there is no amplification of the incident charged scalar wave to cause the superradiance, so that the superradiant instability cannot exist in this spacetime.

Holographic Thermalization in Charged Dilaton Anti-de Sitter Spacetime

We study holographic thermalization in spacetimes with a chemical potential and a non-trivial dilaton field. Three non-local observables are used to probe the whole process and investigate the effect of the ratio of the chemical potential over temperature $χ$ and the dilaton-Maxwell coupling constant $α$. It is found that the saturation time is not always a monotonically increasing function of $χ$, the situation depends on $α$. When $0 \leqα\leq 1$, larger $χ$ yields longer saturation time, while for $α>1$, the situation becomes more complex. More interesting, we found that although $α$ indeed has influence on the whole thermalization process, it nearly does not affect the saturation time, which indicates the universality of the saturation time for the dual one-parameter field theories.

Holographic thermalization in Gauss-Bonnet gravity with de Sitter boundary

We introduce higher-derivative Gauss-Bonnet correction terms in the gravity sector and we relate the modified gravity theory in the bulk to the strongly coupled quantum field theory on a de Sitter boundary. We study the process of holographic thermalization by examining three nonlocal observables, the two-point function, the Wilson loop and the holographic entanglement entropy. We study the time evolution of these three observables and we find that as the strength of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling is increased, the saturation time of the thermalization process to reach thermal equilibrium becomes shorter with the dominant effect given by the holographic entanglement entropy.

Maximally localized states and quantum corrections of black hole thermodynamics in the framework of a new generalized uncertainty principle

As a generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) leads to the effects of the minimal length of the order of the Planck scale and UV/IR mixing, some significant physical concepts and quantities are modified or corrected correspondingly. On the one hand, we derive the maximally localized states --- the physical states displaying the minimal length uncertainty associated with a new GUP proposed in our previous work. On the other hand, in the framework of this new GUP we calculate quantum corrections to the thermodynamic quantities of the Schwardzschild black hole, such as the Hawking temperature, the entropy, and the heat capacity, and give a remnant mass of the black hole at the end of the evaporation process. Moreover, we compare our results with that obtained in the frameworks of several other GUPs. In particular, we observe a significant difference between the situations with and without the consideration of the UV/IR mixing effect in the quantum corrections to the evaporation rate and the decay time. That is, the decay time can greatly be prolonged in the former case, which implies that the quantum correction from the UV/IR mixing effect may give rise to a radical rather than a tiny influence to the Hawking radiation.

Revisiting holographic superconductors with hyperscaling violation

We investigate the effect of the hyperscaling violation on the holographic superconductors. In the s-wave model, we find that the critical temperature decreases first and then increases as the hyperscaling violation increases, and the mass of the scalar field will not modify the value of the hyperscaling violation which gives the minimum critical temperature. We analytically confirm the numerical results by using the Sturm-Liouville method with the higher order trial function and improve the previous findings in J. High Energy Phys. {\bf 09}, 048 (2013). However, different from the s-wave case, we note that the critical temperature decreases with the increase of the hyperscaling violation in the p-wave model. In addition, we observe that the hyperscaling violation affects the conductivity of the holographic superconductors and changes the expected relation in the gap frequency in both s-wave and p-wave models.

Critical behavior of Born-Infeld AdS black holes in the extended phase space thermodynamics

We study the thermodynamics of $D$-dimensional Born-Infeld AdS black holes in the extended phase space. We find that the usual small-large black hole phase transition, which exhibits analogy with the Van de Waals liquid-gas system holds in all dimensions greater than three. However, different from the four-dimensional case, in the system of higher dimensional Born-Infeld AdS black holes there is no reentrant phase transition. For the three-dimensional Born-Infeld AS black hole, there does not exist critical phenomena.

Entropy of isolated horizon from surface term of gravitational action

Starting from the surface term of gravitational action, one can construct a Virasoro algebra with central extension, with which the horizon entropy can be derived by using Cardy formula. This approach gives a new routine to calculate and interpret the horizon entropy. In this paper, we generalize this approach to a more general case, the isolated horizon, which contains non-stationary spacetimes beyond stationary ones. By imposing appropriate boundary conditions near the horizon, the full set of diffeomorphism is restricted to a subset where the corresponding Noether charges form a Virasoro algebra with central extension. Then by using the Cardy formula, we can derive the entropy of the isolated horizon.

Stability of Reissner-Nordström black hole in de Sitter background under charged scalar perturbation

We find a new instability in the four-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black holes against charged scalar perturbations with vanishing angular momentum, $l=0$. We show that such an instability is caused by superradiance. The instability does not occur for an larger angular index, as explicitely proven for $l=1$. Our results are obtained from a numerical investigation of the time domain profiles of the perturbations.

Superradiant instability of Kerr-de Sitter black holes in scalar-tensor theory

We investigate in detail the mechanism of superradiance to render the instability of Kerr-de Sitter black holes in scalar-tensor gravity. Our results provide more clues to examine the scalar-tensor gravity in the astrophysical black holes in the universe with cosmological constant. We also discuss the spontaneous scalarization in the de Sitter background and find that this instability can also happen in the spherical de Sitter configuration in a special style.

Holographic charged fluid dual to third order Lovelock gravity

We study the dual fluid on a finite cutoff surface outside the black brane horizon in the third order Lovelock gravity. Using nonrelativistic long-wavelength expansion, we obtain the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations of dual fluid with external force density on the finite cutoff surface. The viscosity to entropy density ratio $η/s$ is independent of cutoff surface and does not get modification from the third order Lovelock gravity influence. The obtained ratio agrees with the results obtained by using other methods, such as the Kubo formula at the AdS boundary and the membrane paradigm at the horizon in the third order Lovelock gravity. These results can be related by Wilson renormalization group flow. However the kinematic viscosity receives correction from the third order Lovelock term. We show that the equivalence between the isentropic flow of the fluid and the radial component of the gravitational equation observed in the Einstein and Gauss-Bonnet gravities also holds in the third order Lovelock gravity. This generalization brings more understandings of relating the gravity theory to the dual fluid.

Horizon instability of massless scalar perturbations of an extreme Reissner-Nordström-AdS black hole

We study the stability of extreme Reissner-Nordström-AdS black hole under massless scalar perturbations. We show that the perturbation on the horizon of the extreme Reissner-Nordström-AdS black hole experiences a power-law decay, instead of an exponential decay as observed in the nonextreme AdS black hole. On the horizon of the extreme Reissner-Nordström-AdS black hole, the blow up happens at lower order derivative of the scalar field compared with that of the extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole, which shows that extreme AdS black holes tend to instability in comparison to black holes in asymptotic flat space-times.

Superradiant instability of extremal brane-world Reissner-Nordström black holes to charged scalar perturbations

We examine the stability of extremal braneworld Reissner-Nordström black holes under massive charged scalar perturbations. We show that similar to the four-dimensional case, the superradiant amplification can occur in braneworld charged holes. More interestingly we find that when the spacetime dimension is higher than four, a trapping potential well can emerge outside the braneworld black hole. This potential well is the extra dimensional effect and does not exist in four dimensions. It triggers the superradiant instability of the extremal braneworld charged holes.

Surface term, Virasoro algebra, and Wald entropy of black holes in higher-curvature gravity

Recently, in the Einstein gravity, Majhi and Padmanabhan proposed a straightforward and transparent way in obtaining the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy by using the approach based on the Virasoro algebra and central charge. In this work, we generalize their approach to the modified gravity with higher curvature corrections and show that their approach can successfully lead to the corresponding Wald entropy in the higher curvature gravity. Our result shows that the approach is physically general.

Quantum tunneling and spectroscopy of noncommutative inspired Kerr black hole

We discuss the thermodynamics of the noncommutative inspired Kerr black hole by means of a reformulated Hamilton-Jacobi method and a dimensional reduction technique. In order to investigate the effect of the angular momentum of the tunneling particle, we calculate the wave function to the first order of the WKB ansatz. Then, using a density matrix technique we derive the radiation spectrum from which the radiation temperature can be read out. Our results show that the radiation of this noncommutative inspired black hole corresponds to a modified temperature which involves the effect of noncommutativity. However, the angular momentum of the tunneling particle has no influence on the radiation temperature. Moreover, we analyze the entropy spectrum and verify that its quantization is modified neither by the noncommutativity of spacetime nor by the quantum correction of wave functions.

The coordinate coherent states approach revisited

We revisit the coordinate coherent states approach through two different quantization procedures in the quantum field theory on the noncommutative Minkowski plane. The first procedure, which is based on the normal commutation relation between an annihilation and creation operators, deduces that a point mass can be described by a Gaussian function instead of the usual Dirac delta function. However, we argue this specific quantization by adopting the canonical one (based on the canonical commutation relation between a field and its conjugate momentum) and show that a point mass should still be described by the Dirac delta function, which implies that the concept of point particles is still valid when we deal with the noncommutativity by following the coordinate coherent states approach. In order to investigate the dependence on quantization procedures, we apply the two quantization procedures to the Unruh effect and Hawking radiation and find that they give rise to significantly different results. Under the first quantization procedure, the Unruh temperature and Unruh spectrum are not deformed by noncommutativity, but the Hawking temperature is deformed by noncommutativity while the radiation specturm is untack. However, under the second quantization procedure, the Unruh temperature and Hawking temperature are untack but the both spectra are modified by an effective greybody (deformed) factor.

Massive charged particle's tunneling from spherical charged black hole

We generalize the Parikh-Wilczek scheme to the tunneling of a massive charged particle from a general spherical charged black hole. We obtain that the tunneling probability depends on the energy, the mass and the charge of the particle. In particular, the modified Hawking temperature is related to the charge. Only at the leading order approximation can the standard Hawking temperature be reproduced. We take the Reissner-Nordström black hole as an example to clarify our points of view, and find that the accumulation of Hawking radiation makes it approach an extreme black hole.

Tunneling of massive particles from noncommutative inspired Schwarzschild black hole

We apply the generalization of the Parikh-Wilczek method to the tunneling of massive particles from noncommutative inspired Schwarzschild black holes. By deriving the equation of radial motion of the tunneling particle directly, we calculate the emission rate which is shown to be dependent on the noncommutative parameter besides the energy and mass of the tunneling particle. After equating the emission rate to the Boltzmann factor, we obtain the modified Hawking temperature which relates to the noncommutativity and recovers the standard Hawking temperature in the commutative limit. We also discuss the entropy of the noncommutative inspired Schwarzschild black hole and its difference after and before a massive particle's emission.

U(2,2) gravity on noncommutative space with symplectic structure

The classical Einstein's gravity can be reformulated from the constrained U(2,2) gauge theory on the ordinary (commutative) four-dimensional spacetime. Here we consider a noncommutative manifold with a symplectic structure and construct a U(2,2) gauge theory on such a manifold by using the covariant coordinate method. Then we use the Seiberg-Witten map to express noncommutative quantities in terms of their commutative counterparts up to the first-order in noncommutative parameters. After imposing constraints we obtain a noncommutative gravity theory described by the Lagrangian with up to nonvanishing first order corrections in noncommutative parameters. This result coincides with our previous one obtained for the noncommutative SL(2,C) gravity.

SL(2,C) gravity on noncommutative space with Poisson structure

The Einstein's gravity theory can be formulated as an SL(2,C) gauge theory in terms of spinor notations. In this paper, we consider a noncommutative space with the Poisson structure and construct an SL(2,C) formulation of gravity on such a space. Using the covariant coordinate technique, we build a gauge invariant action in which, according to the Seiberg-Witten map, the physical degrees of freedom are expressed in terms of their commutative counterparts up to the first order in noncommutative parameters.
