Critical phenomena in dynamical scalarization of charged black hole

We report a new black hole scalarization mechanism and disclose novel dynamical critical phenomena in the process of the nonlinear accretion of the scalar field into black holes. The accretion process can transform a seed black hole into a final scalarized or bald black hole, depending on the initial parameter of the scalar field $p$. There is a critical parameter $p_{\ast}$ and near it all intermediate solutions are attracted to a critical solution and stay there for a time scaling as $T\propto-γ\ln|p-p_{\ast}|$. At late times, the solutions evolve into scalarized black holes if $p>p_{\ast}$, or bald black holes if $p<p_{\ast}$. The final masses of the resulting scalarized/bald black holes satisfy power-laws $M_{p}-M_{\pm}\propto|p-p_{\ast}|^{γ_{\pm}}$ where $M_{\pm}$ are the masses of the scalarized/bald black holes when $p\to p_\ast$ from above/below, and $γ_{\pm}$ the corresponding exponents.

Dynamical spontaneous scalarization in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory

We study the linear instability and the nonlinear dynamical evolution of the Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole in the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory in asymptotic flat spacetime. We focus on the coupling function $f(ϕ)=e^{-bϕ^2}$ which allows both the scalar-free RN solution and scalarized black hole solution. We first present the evolution of system parameters during dynamic scalarization. For parameter regions where spontaneous scalarization occurs, we find that the evolution of the scalar field at the horizon is dominated by the fundamental unstable mode from linear analysis at early times. At late times, the nonlinear evolution can be viewed as the perturbation of scalarized black holes.

Entanglement Wedge Minimum Cross-Section for Holographic Aether Gravity

We study the entanglement wedge cross-section (EWCS) in holographic Aether gravity theory, a gravity theory with Lorentz symmetry violation while keeping the general covariance intact. We find that only a limited parameter space is allowed to obtain a black brane with positive Hawking temperature. Subject to these allowed parameter regions, we find that the EWCS could exhibit non-monotonic behaviors with system parameters. Meanwhile, the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE), and the corresponding mutual information (MI), can only exhibit monotonic behaviors. These phenomena suggest that the EWCS could capture much more rich content of the entanglement than that of the HEE and the MI. The role of the Lorentz violation in determining the behaviors of quantum information-related quantities is also analyzed.

Entanglement Wedge Minimum Cross-Section in Holographic Axion Gravity Theories

We study the mixed state entanglement properties in two holographic axion models by examining the behavior of the entanglement wedge minimum cross section (EWCS), and comparing it with the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) and mutual information (MI). We find that the behavior of HEE, MI and EWCS with Hawking temperature is monotonic, while the behavior with the axion parameter $k$ is more rich, which depends on the size of the configuration and the values of the other two parameters. Interestingly, the EWCS monotonically increases with the coupling constant $κ$ between the axion field and the Maxwell field, while HEE and MI can be non-monotonic. It suggests that the EWCS, as a mixed state entanglement measure, captures distinct degrees of freedom from the HEE and MI indeed. We also provide analytical understandings for most of the numerical results.

Reflected Entropy in Double Holography

Recently, the reflected entropy is proposed in holographic approach to describe the entanglement of a bipartite quantum system in a mixed state, which is identified as the area of the reflected minimal surface inside the entanglement wedge. In this paper, we study the reflected entropy in the doubly holographic setup, which contains the degrees of freedom of quantum matter in the bulk. In this context, we propose a notion of quantum entanglement wedge cross-section, which may describe the reflected entropy with higher-order quantum corrections. We numerically compute the reflected entropy in pure AdS background and black hole background in four dimensions, respectively. In general, the reflected entropy contains the contribution from the geometry on the brane and the contribution from the CFT. We compute their proportion for different Newton constants and find that their behaviors are in agreement with the results based on the semi-classical gravity and the correlation of CFT coupled to the bath CFT.

Dynamical scalarization in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory

We study the process of fully nonlinear dynamical scalarization starting from a charged black hole or a naked singularity in asymptotically flat spacetime in the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory. Initially the dilaton field is negligible compared to the gravitational and the Maxwell field. Then the dilaton field experiences an immediate growth, later it oscillates with damping amplitude and finally settles down to a finite value. For a hairy black hole develops from an original Reissner-Nordström black hole, since the dilaton oscillation and decay are almost independent of the coupling parameter, unlike the Anti-de Sitter spacetime it is not easy to distinguish the resulting hairy black hole from the original asymptotically flat charged hole. For a hairy black hole evolves from an original naked singularity, the resulting hairy black hole has rich structures. In the scalarization process, the naked singularity is soon enveloped by one outer horizon, then another horizon is developed and in the end a stable hairy black hole forms and two horizons degenerate into one to protect the singularity. The hairy black hole mass saturates exponentially in the scalarization.

Evolution of Anti-de Sitter black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory

We study the nonlinear evolution of the spherical symmetric black holes under a small neutral scalar field perturbation in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with coupling function $f(ϕ)=e^{-bϕ}$ in asymptotic anti-de Sitter spacetime. The non-minimal coupling between scalar and Maxwell fields allows the transmission of the energy from the Maxwell field to the scalar field, but also behaves as a repulsive force for the scalar. The scalar field oscillates with damping amplitude and converges to a final value by a power law. The irreducible mass of the black hole increases abruptly at initial times and then saturates to the final value exponentially. The saturating rate is twice the decaying rate of the dominant mode of the scalar. The effects of the black hole charge, the cosmological constant and the coupling parameter on the evolution are studied in detail. When the initial configuration is a naked singularity spacetime with a large charge to mass ratio, a horizon will form soon and hide the singularity.

Instability of regularized 4D charged Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet de-Sitter black holes

We studied the instability of the regularized 4D charged Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet de-Sitter black holes under charged scalar perturbations. The unstable modes satisfy the superradiant condition, but not all modes satisfying the superradiant condition are unstable. The instability occurs when the cosmological constant is small and the black hole charge is not too large. The Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant makes the unstable black hole more unstable when both the black hole charge and cosmological constant are small, and makes the stable black hole more stable when the black hole charge is large.

What kind of "complexity" is dual to holographic complexity?

It is assumed that the holographic complexities such as the complexity-action (CA) and the complexity-volume (CV) conjecture are dual to complexity in field theory. However, because the definition of the complexity in field theory is still not complete, the confirmation of the holographic duality of the complexity is ambiguous. To improve this situation, we approach the problem from a different angle. We first identify minimal and genuin properties that the filed theory dual of the holographic complexity should satisfy without assuming anything from the circuit complexity or the information theory. Based on these properties, we propose a field theory formula dual to the holographic complexity. Our field theory formula implies that the complexity between certain states in two dimensional CFTs is given by the Liouville action, which is compatible with the path-integral complexity. It gives natural interpretations for both the CA and CV conjectures and identify what their reference states are. When applied to the thermo-field double states, it also gives consistent results with the holographic results in the CA conjecture: both the divergent term and finite term.

Superradiance and stability of the novel 4D charged Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole

We investigated the superradiance and stability of the novel 4D charged Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole which is recently inspired by Glavan and Lin [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 081301 (2020)]. We found that the positive Gauss-Bonnet coupling consant $α$ enhances the superradiance, while the negative $α$ suppresses it. The condition for superradiant instability is proved. We also worked out the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of the charged Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole and found that the real part of all the QNMs live beyond the superradiance condition and the imaginary parts are all negative. Therefore this black hole is superradiant stable. When $α$ makes the black hole extremal, there are normal modes.

Mixed State Entanglement for Holographic Axion Model

We study the mixed state entanglement in a holographic axion model. We find that the holographic entanglement entropy (HEE), mutual information (MI) and entanglement of purification (EoP) exhibit very distinct behaviors with system parameters. The HEE exhibits universal monotonic behavior with system parameters, while the behaviors of MI and EoP relate to the specific system parameters and configurations. We find that MI and EoP can characterize mixed state entanglement better than HEE since they are less affected by thermal effects. Moreover, we argue that EoP is more suitable for describing mixed state entanglement than MI. Because the MI of large configurations are still dictated by the thermal entropy, while the EoP will never be controlled only by the thermal effects.

Out-of-Time-Order Correlators in One-Dimensional XY model

Out-of-time-order correlators (OTOC) are considered to be a promising tool to characterize chaos in quantum systems. In this paper we study OTOC in XY model. With the presence of anisotropic parameter $γ$ and external magnetic field $λ$ in the Hamiltonian, we mainly focus on their influences on OTOC in thermodynamical limit. We find that the butterfly speed $v_B$ is dependent of these two parameters, and the recent conjectured universal form which characterizes the wavefront of chaos spreading are proved to be positive with varying $v_B$ in different phases of XY model. Moreover, we also study the behaviors of OTOC with fixed location, and we find that the early-time part fully agrees with the results derived from Hausdorff-Baker-Campbell expansion. The long-time part is studied either, while in the local case $C(t)$ decay as power law $t^{-1}$, $|F(t)|$ with nonlocal operators show quite interesting and nontrivial power law decay corresponding to different choices of operators and models. At last, we observe temperature dependence for OTOC with local operators at ($γ=0, λ=1$), and divergent behavior with low temperature for nonlocal operator case at late time.

Surface/State correspondence and $T\overline{T}$ deformation

The surface/state correspondence suggests that the bulk co-dimensional two surface could be dual to the quantum state in the holographic conformal field theory(CFT). Inspired by the cutoff-AdS/$T\overline{T}$-deformed-CFT correspondence, we propose that the quantum states of two-dimensional $T\overline{T}$-deformed holographic CFT are dual to some particular surfaces in the AdS$_3$ gravity. In particular, the time slice of the cut-off surface is dual to the ground state of the $T\overline{T}$-deformed CFT. We examine our proposal by studying the entanglement entropy and quantum information metric. We find that the complexity of the ground state in the deformed theory is consistent with the one of a particular cMERA and the holographic complexity via CV or CA prescription.

The Fate of Instability of de Sitter Black Holes at Large $D$

We study non-linearly the gravitational instabilities of Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter and Gauss-Bonnet-de Sitter black holes by using the large $D$ expansion method. In both cases, the thresholds of the instability are found to be consistent with the linear analysis, and on the thresholds the evolutions of the black holes under perturbations settle down to stationary lumpy solutions. However, the solutions in unstable region are highly time-dependent, and resemble the fully localized black spots and black ring with $S^{D-2}$ and $S^1\times S^{D-3}$ topologies, respectively. Our study indicates the possible transition between the lumpy black holes and localized black holes in higher dimensions.

Charged scalar gravitational collapse in de Sitter spacetime

We study the charged scalar collapse in de Sitter spacetimes. With the electric charge, there is one more competitor to join the competition of dynamics in the gravitational collapse. We find that two factors can influence the electric charge. If we just adjust the charge conjugation, the electric charge effect is always perturbative at the black hole threshold. The electric charge can also be influenced by the initial conditions of perturbations. These initial parameters can be tuned to control the competition in dynamics and present us new and rich physics in the process of gravitational collapse. We give physical explanations on these phenomena found in dynamics. Furthermore we show that the properties of the gravitational collapse are universal and do not depend on spacetime dimensions.

Gravitational collapse of massless scalar field in $f(R)$ gravity

We study the spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of massless scalar matter field in asymptotic flat spacetime in $f(R)$ gravity. In the Einstein frame of $f(R)$ gravity, an additional scalar field arises due to the conformal transformation. We find that besides the usual competition between gravitational energy and kinetic energy in the process of gravitational collapse, the new scalar field brought by the conformal transformation adds one more competing force in the dynamical system. The dynamical competition can be controlled by tuning the amplitudes of the initial perturbations of the new scalar field and the matter field. To understand the physical reasons behind these phenomena, we analyze the gravitational potential behavior and calculate the Ricci scalar at center with the change of initial amplitudes of perturbations. We find rich physics on the formation of black holes through gravitational collapse in $f(R)$ gravity.

Charged Scalar Perturbations around Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger Black Holes

We examine the stability of the Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger (GHS) black hole under charged scalar perturbations. We find that different from the neutral scalar field perturbations, only two numerical methods, such as the continued fraction method and the asymptotic iteration method, can keep high efficiency and accuracy requirements in the frequency domain computations. The comparisons of the efficiency between these two methods have also been done. Employing the appropriate numerical method, we show that the GHS black hole is always stable against charged scalar perturbations. This is different from the result obtained in the de Sitter and Anti-de Sitter black holes. Furthermore we argue that in the GHS black hole background there is no amplification of the incident charged scalar wave to cause the superradiance, so that the superradiant instability cannot exist in this spacetime.

Entropy of isolated horizon from surface term of gravitational action

Starting from the surface term of gravitational action, one can construct a Virasoro algebra with central extension, with which the horizon entropy can be derived by using Cardy formula. This approach gives a new routine to calculate and interpret the horizon entropy. In this paper, we generalize this approach to a more general case, the isolated horizon, which contains non-stationary spacetimes beyond stationary ones. By imposing appropriate boundary conditions near the horizon, the full set of diffeomorphism is restricted to a subset where the corresponding Noether charges form a Virasoro algebra with central extension. Then by using the Cardy formula, we can derive the entropy of the isolated horizon.

Multibrane DGP model: Our universe as a stack of $(2+1)$-dim branes

We consider scenario in which our $(3+1)$-dim universe is actually a dense stack of multiple parallel $(2+1)$-dim branes. For this purpose, we generalize the DGP model to a multi-brane case. We solve for the propagation of the scalar field and gravity in this setup. At short distances (high momenta) along the branes interactions follow the $(2+1)$-dim laws, while at large distances (low momenta) interactions follow the usual $(3+1)$-dim laws. This feature is inherited from the original DGP model. In the direction perpendicular to the brane, we show that interactions become $(3+1)$-dim at low momenta which are unable to resolve the interbrane separation. Thus, this is one of the explicit constructs of the "vanishing dimensions" scenario where high energy physics appears to be lower dimensional rather than higher dimensional.

Superradiant instability of Kerr-de Sitter black holes in scalar-tensor theory

We investigate in detail the mechanism of superradiance to render the instability of Kerr-de Sitter black holes in scalar-tensor gravity. Our results provide more clues to examine the scalar-tensor gravity in the astrophysical black holes in the universe with cosmological constant. We also discuss the spontaneous scalarization in the de Sitter background and find that this instability can also happen in the spherical de Sitter configuration in a special style.

Generalized Kerr/CFT correspondence with electromagnetic field

The electrovac axisymmetric extreme isolated horizon/CFT correspondence is considered. By expansion techniques under the Bondi-like coordinates, it is proved that the near horizon geometry of electrovac axisymmetric extreme isolated horizon is unique. Furthermore, explicit coordinate transformation between the Bondi-like coordinates and the Poincare-type coordinates for the near horizon metric of the extreme Kerr-Newmann spacetime is found. Based on these analyses and the thermodynamics of the isolated horizon, then, the Kerr/CFT correspondence is generalized to nonstationary extreme black holes with electromagnetic fields.

Magnetohydrodynamics from gravity

Imposing the Petrov-like boundary condition on the hypersurface at finite cutoff, we derive the hydrodynamic equation on the hypersurface from the bulk Einstein equation with electromagnetic field in the near horizon limit. We first get the general framework for spacetime with matter field, and then derive the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for black holes with electric charge and magnetic charge respectively. Especially, in the magnetic case, the standard magnetohydrodynamic equations will arise due to the existence of the background electromagnetic field on the hypersurface.
