Decay properties of Axially Symmetric D-solutions to the Steady Incompressible Magnetohydrodynamic Equations

In this paper, we investigate the decay properties of axially symmetric solutions to the steady incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with finite Dirichlet integral. We first derive the decay rates of general D-solutions to the axisymmetric MHD equations. In the special case where the magnetic field only has the swirl component ${\textbf {h}}(r,z)= h_θ(r,z) {\mathbf e_θ}$, we obtain better decay rates. The last result examines the decay rates along the axis $Oz$ also within the special class of D-solutions with only swirl magnetic field. The main tool in this paper is the combination of the scaling argument, the \textit{Brezis-Gallouet inequality} and the weighted energy estimate.

Structural Stability of Transonic Shock Flows with an External Force

This paper is devoted to the structural stability of a transonic shock passing through a flat nozzle for two-dimensional steady compressible flows with an external force. We first establish the existence and uniqueness of one dimensional transonic shock solutions to the steady Euler system with an external force by prescribing suitable pressure at the exit of the nozzle when the upstream flow is a uniform supersonic flow. It is shown that the external force helps to stabilize the transonic shock in flat nozzles and the shock position is uniquely determined. Then we are concerned with the structural stability of these transonic shoc solutions when the exit pressure is suitably perturbed. One of the new ingredients in our analysis is to use the deformation-curl decomposition to the steady Euler system developed in \cite{WengX2019} to deal with the transonic shock problem.

On Some Smooth Symmetric Transonic Flows with Nonzero Angular Velocity and Vorticity

This paper concerns the structural stability of smooth cylindrically symmetric transonic flows in a concentric cylinder. Both cylindrical and axi-symmetric perturbations are considered. The governing system here is of mixed elliptic-hyperbolic and changes type and the suitable formulation of boundary conditions at the boundaries is of great importance. First, we establish the existence and uniqueness of smooth cylindrical transonic spiral solutions with nonzero angular velocity and vorticity which are close to the background transonic flow with small perturbations of the Bernoulli's function and the entropy at the outer cylinder and the flow angles at both the inner and outer cylinders independent of the symmetric axis, and it is shown that in this case, the sonic points of the flow are nonexceptional and noncharacteristically degenerate, and form a cylindrical surface. Second, we also prove the existence and uniqueness of axi-symmetric smooth transonic rotational flows which are adjacent to the background transonic flow, whose sonic points form an axi-symmetric surface. The key elements in our analysis are to utilize the deformation-curl decomposition for the steady Euler system introduced in \cite{WengXin19} to deal with the hyperbolicity in subsonic regions and to find an appropriate multiplier for the linearized second order mixed type equations which are crucial to identify the suitable boundary conditions and to yield the important basic energy estimates.

Steady Compressible Radially Symmetric Flows with Nonzero Angular Velocity in an Annulus

In this paper, we investigate steady inviscid compressible flows with radial symmetry in an annulus. The major concerns are transonic flows with or without shocks. One of the main motivations is to elucidate the role played by the angular velocity in the structure of steady inviscid compressible flows. We give a complete classification of flow patterns in terms of boundary conditions at the inner and outer circle. Due to the nonzero angular velocity, many new flow patterns will appear. There exists accelerating or decelerating smooth transonic flows in an annulus satisfying one side boundary conditions at the inner or outer circle with all sonic points being nonexceptional and noncharacteristically degenerate. More importantly, it is found that besides the well-known supersonic-subsonic shock in a divergent nozzle as in the case without angular velocity, there exists a supersonic-supersonic shock solution, where the downstream state may change smoothly from supersonic to subsonic. Furthermore, there exists a supersonic-sonic shock solution where the shock circle and the sonic circle coincide, which is new and interesting.

Two dimensional subsonic and subsonic-sonic spiral flows outside a porous body

In this paper, we investigate two dimensional subsonic and subsonic-sonic spiral flows outside a porous body. The existence and uniqueness of the subsonic spiral flow are obtained via variational formulation. The optimal decay rate at far fields is also derived by the Kelvin's transformation and some elliptic estimates. By extracting spiral subsonic solutions as the approximate sequences, we obtain the spiral subsonic-sonic limit solution. The main ingredients of our analysis are methods of calculus of variations, the theory of second-order quasilinear equations and the compactness framework.

Structural stability of the transonic shock problem in a divergent three dimensional axisymmetric perturbed nozzle

In this paper, we prove the structural stability of the transonic shocks for three dimensional axisymmetric Euler system with swirl velocity under the perturbations for the incoming supersonic flow, the nozzle boundary, and the exit pressure. Compared with the known results on the stability of transonic shocks, one of the major difficulties for the axisymmetric flows with swirls is that corner singularities near the intersection point of the shock surface and nozzle boundary and the artificial singularity near the axis appear simultaneously. One of the key points in the analysis for this paper is the introduction of an invertible Lagrangian transformation which can straighten the streamlines in the whole nozzle and help to represent the solutions of transport equations explicitly.

3-D axisymmetric subsonic flows with nonzero swirl for the compressible Euler-Poisson system

We address the structural stability of 3-D axisymmetric subsonic flows with nonzero swirl for the steady compressible Euler-Poisson system in a cylinder supplemented with non small boundary data. A special Helmholtz decomposition of the velocity field is introduced for 3-D axisymmetric flow with a nonzero swirl(=angular momentum density) component. With the newly introduced decomposition, a quasilinear elliptic system of second order is derived from the elliptic modes in Euler-Poisson system for subsonic flows. Due to the nonzero swirl, the main difficulties lie in the solvability of a singular elliptic equation which concerns the angular component of the vorticity in its cylindrical representation, and in analysis of streamlines near the axis $r=0$.

Decay properties of smooth axially symmetric D-solutions to the steady Navier-Stokes equations

We investigate the decay properties of smooth axially symmetric D-solutions to the steady Navier-Stokes equations. The achievements of this paper are two folds. One is improved decay rates of $u_þ$ and $\na {\bf u}$, especially we show that $|u_þ(r,z)|\leq c\left(\f{\log r}{r}\right)^{\f 12}$ for any smooth axially symmetric D-solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations. These improvement are based on improved weighted estimates of $\om_þ$, integral representations of ${\bf u}$ in terms of $\bm{\om}=\textit{curl }{\bf u}$ and $A_p$ weight for singular integral operators, which yields good decay estimates for $(\na u_r, \na u_z)$ and $(\om_r, \om_{z})$, where $\bm{\om}= \om_r {\bf e}_r + \om_þ {\bf e}_þ+ \om_z {\bf e}_z$. Another is the first decay rate estimates in the $Oz$-direction for smooth axially symmetric flows without swirl. We do not need any small assumptions on the forcing term.

Existence of axially symmetric weak solutions to steady MHD with non-homogeneous boundary conditions

We establish the existence of axially symmetric weak solutions to steady incompressible magnetohydrodynamics with non-homogeneous boundary conditions. The key issue is the Bernoulli's law for the total head pressure $Φ=\f 12(|{\bf u}|^2+|{\bf h}|^2)+p$ to a special class of solutions to the inviscid, non-resistive MHD system, where the magnetic field only contains the swirl component.

Liouville type theorems for the steady axially symmetric Navier-Stokes and magnetohydrodynamic equations

In this paper we study Liouville properties of smooth steady axially symmetric solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. First, we provide another version of the Liouville theorem of \cite{kpr15} in the case of zero swirl, where we replaced the Dirichlet integrability condition by mild decay conditions. Then we prove some Liouville theorems under the assumption $\|\f{u_r}{r}{\bf 1}_{\{u_r< -\f 1r\}}\|_{L^{3/2}(\mbR^3)}< C_{\sharp}$ where $C_{\sharp}$ is a universal constant to be specified. In particular, if $u_r(r,z)\geq -\f1r$ for $\forall (r,z)\in[0,\oo)\times\mbR$, then ${\bf u}\equiv 0$. Liouville theorems also hold if $\displaystyle\lim_{|x|\to \oo}\Ga =0$ or $\Ga\in L^q(\mbR^3)$ for some $q\in [2,\oo)$ where $\Ga= r u_þ$. We also established some interesting inequalities for $\Om\co \f{\p_z u_r-\p_r u_z}{r}$, showing that $\na\Om$ can be bounded by $\Om$ itself. All these results are extended to the axially symmetric MHD and Hall-MHD equations with ${\bf u}=u_r(r,z){\bf e}_r +u_þ(r,z) {\bf e}_þ + u_z(r,z){\bf e}_z, {\bf h}=h_þ(r,z){\bf e}_þ$, indicating that the swirl component of the magnetic field does not affect the triviality. Especially, we establish the maximum principle for the total head pressure $Φ=\f {1}{2} (|{\bf u}|^2+|{\bf h}|^2)+p$ for this special solution class.

A new formulation for the 3-D Euler equations with an application to subsonic flows in a cylinder

In this paper, a new formulation for the three dimensional Euler equations is derived. Since the Euler system is hyperbolic-elliptic coupled in a subsonic region, so an effective decoupling of the hyperbolic and elliptic modes is essential for any development of the theory. The key idea in our formulation is to use the Bernoulli's law to reduce the dimension of the velocity field by defining new variables $(1,β_2=\frac{u_2}{u_1},β_3=\frac{u_3}{u_1})$ and replacing $u_1$ by the Bernoulli's function $B$ through $u_1^2=\frac{2(B-h(ρ))}{1+β_2^2+β_3^2}$. We find a conserved quantity for flows with a constant Bernoulli's function, which behaves like the scaled vorticity in the 2-D case. More surprisingly, a system of new conservation laws can be derived, which is new even in the two dimensional case. We use this new formulation to construct a smooth subsonic Euler flow in a rectangular cylinder, which is also required to be adjacent to some special subsonic states.

On analyticity and temporal decay rates of solutions to the viscous resistive Hall-MHD system

We address the analyticity and large time decay rates for strong solutions of the Hall-MHD equations. By Gevrey estimates, we show that the strong solution with small initial date in $H^r(\mathbb{R}^3)$ with $r>\f 52$ becomes analytic immediately after $t>0$, and the radius of analyticity will grow like $\sqrt{t}$ in time. Upper and lower bounds on the decay of higher order derivatives are also obtained, which extends the previous work by Chae and Schonbek (J. Differential Equations 255 (2013), 3971--3982).

Remarks on asymptotic behaviors of strong solutions to a viscous Boussinesq system

In this paper, we first address the space-time decay properties for higher order derivatives of strong solutions to the Boussinesq system in the usual Sobolev space. The decay rates obtained here are optimal. The proof is based on a parabolic interpolation inequality, bootstrap argument and some weighted estimates. Secondly, we present a new solution integration formula for the Boussinesq system, which will be employed to establish the existence of strong solutions in scaling invariant function spaces. We further investigate the asymptotic profiles and decay properties of these strong solutions. Our results recover and extend the important results in Brandolese and Schonbek (Tran. A. M.S. Vol 364, No.10, 2012, 5057-5090).

Space-time decay estimates for the incompressible viscous resistive Hall-MHD equations

In this paper, we address the space-time decay properties for strong solutions to the incompressible viscous resistive Hall-MHD equations. We obtained the same space-time decay rates as those of the heat equation. Based on the temporal decay results in \cite{cs}, we find that one can obtain weighted estimates of the magnetic field $B$ by direct weighted energy estimate, and then by regarding the magnetic convection term as a forcing term in the velocity equations, we can obtain the weighted estimates for the vorticity, which yields the corresponding estimates for the velocity field. The higher order derivative estimates will be obtained by using a parabolic interpolation inequality proved in \cite{k01}. It should be emphasized that the the magnetic field has stronger decay properties than the velocity field in the sense that there is no restriction on the exponent of the weight. The same arguments also yield the sharp space-time decay rates for strong solutions to the usual MHD equations.

Singularity formation for the incompressible Hall-MHD equations without resistivity

In this paper we show that the incompressible Hall-MHD system without resistivity is not globally in time well-posed in any Sobolev space $H^{m}(\mathbb{R}^3)$ for any $m>\frac{7}{2}$. Namely, either the system is locally ill-posed in $H^{m}(\mathbb{R}^3)$, or it is locally well-posed, but there exists an initial data in $H^{m}(\mathbb{R}^3)$, for which the $H^{m}(\mathbb{R}^3)$ norm of solution blows-up in finite time if $m>7/2$. In the latter case we choose an axisymmetric initial data $u_0(x)=u_{0r}(r,z)e_r+ b_{0z}(r,z)e_z$ and $B_0(x)=b_{0θ}(r,z)e_θ$, and reduce the system to the axisymmetric setting. If the convection term survives sufficiently long time, then the Hall term generates the singularity on the axis of symmetry and we have $ \lim\sup_{t\to t_*} \sup_{z\in \Bbb R} |\partial_z\partial_r b_θ(r=0,z)|=\infty$ for some $t_*>0$.

On steady subsonic flows for Euler-Poisson models

In this paper, we are concerned with the structural stability of some steady subsonic solutions for Euler-Poisson system. A steady subsonic solution with subsonic background charge is proven to be structurally stable with respect to small perturbations of the background charge, the incoming flow angles, the normal electric field and the Bernoulli's function at the inlet and the end pressure at the exit, provided the background solution has a low Mach number and a small electric field. Following the idea developed in [19], we give a new formulation for Euler-Poisson equations, which employ the Bernoulli's law to reduce the dimension of the velocity field. The new ingredient in our mathematical analysis is the solvability of a new second order elliptic system supplemented with oblique derivative conditions at the inlet and Dirichlet boundary conditions at the exit of the nozzle.
