Axi-symmetric solutions for active vector models generalizing 3D Euler and electron--MHD equations

We study systems interpolating between the 3D incompressible Euler and electron--MHD equations, given by \begin{equation*} \partial_t B + V \cdot \nabla B = B\cdot \nabla V, \qquad V = -\nabla\times (-Δ)^{-a} B, \qquad \nabla\cdot B = 0, \end{equation*} where $B$ is a time-dependent vector field in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Under the assumption that the initial data is axi-symmetric without swirl, we prove local well-posedness of Lipschitz continuous solutions and existence of traveling waves in the range $1/2<a<1$. These generalize the corresponding results for the 3D axisymmetric Euler equations and should be useful in the study of stability and instability for axisymmetric solutions.

Existence of local suitable weak solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations for initial data in $L^{2}_{\rm loc} (\mathbb{R}^3)$

We consider the Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb{R}^3$ subject to the initial condition with initial velocity field in $L^{2}_{\rm loc} (\mathbb{R}^3)$ such that $\limsup_{R \to +\infty } R^{-1} \|u_{0} \|_{ L^{2}(B(R))} < +\infty$. Our aim is to show the local existence of a weak solution, global existence of weak solution if $C=0$ and the partial regularity in the sense of Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg.

On Liouville type theorems for the stationary MHD and the Hall-MHD systems in $\mathbb{R}^3$

In this paper we prove a Liouville type theorem for the stationary MHD and the stationary Hall-MHD systems. Assuming suitable growth condition at infinity for the mean oscillations for the potential functions, we show that the solutions are trivial. These results generalize the previous results obtained by two of the current authors in [6]. To prove our main theorems we use a refined iteration argument.

On the Serrin-type condition on one velocity component for the Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper we consider the regularity problem of the Navier-Stokes equations in $ \R^{3} $. We show that the Serrin-type condition imposed on one component of the velocity $ u_3\in L^p(0,T; L^q(\R^{3} ))$ satisfying $ \frac{2}{p}+ \frac{3}{q} <1$, $ 3<q \le +\infty$ implies the regularity of the weak Leray solution $ u: \R^{3} \times (0,T) \rightarrow \R^{3} $ with the initial data belonging to $ L^2(\Bbb R^3) \cap L^3(\R^{3})$. The result is an immediate consequence of a new local regularity criterion in terms of one velocity component for suitable weak solutions.

Relative decay conditions on Liouville type theorem for the steady Navier-Stokes system

In this paper we prove Liouville type theorem for the stationary Navier-Stokes equations in $\Bbb R^3$ under the assumptions on the relative decays of velocity, pressure and the head pressure. More precisely, we show that any smooth solution $(u,p)$ of the stationary Navier-Stokes equations satisfying $u(x) \to 0$ as $|x|\to +\infty$ and the condition of finite Dirichlet integral $\int_{\Bbb R^3} | \nabla u|^2 dx <+\infty $ is trivial, if either $|u|/|Q|=O(1)$ or $|p|/|Q| =O(1) $ as $|x|\to \infty$, where $|Q|=\frac12 |u|^2 +p$ is the head pressure.

Liouville type theorems for the steady axially symmetric Navier-Stokes and magnetohydrodynamic equations

In this paper we study Liouville properties of smooth steady axially symmetric solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. First, we provide another version of the Liouville theorem of \cite{kpr15} in the case of zero swirl, where we replaced the Dirichlet integrability condition by mild decay conditions. Then we prove some Liouville theorems under the assumption $\|\f{u_r}{r}{\bf 1}_{\{u_r< -\f 1r\}}\|_{L^{3/2}(\mbR^3)}< C_{\sharp}$ where $C_{\sharp}$ is a universal constant to be specified. In particular, if $u_r(r,z)\geq -\f1r$ for $\forall (r,z)\in[0,\oo)\times\mbR$, then ${\bf u}\equiv 0$. Liouville theorems also hold if $\displaystyle\lim_{|x|\to \oo}\Ga =0$ or $\Ga\in L^q(\mbR^3)$ for some $q\in [2,\oo)$ where $\Ga= r u_þ$. We also established some interesting inequalities for $\Om\co \f{\p_z u_r-\p_r u_z}{r}$, showing that $\na\Om$ can be bounded by $\Om$ itself. All these results are extended to the axially symmetric MHD and Hall-MHD equations with ${\bf u}=u_r(r,z){\bf e}_r +u_þ(r,z) {\bf e}_þ + u_z(r,z){\bf e}_z, {\bf h}=h_þ(r,z){\bf e}_þ$, indicating that the swirl component of the magnetic field does not affect the triviality. Especially, we establish the maximum principle for the total head pressure $Φ=\f {1}{2} (|{\bf u}|^2+|{\bf h}|^2)+p$ for this special solution class.

On Liouville type theorems for the steady Navier-Stokes equations in $\Bbb R^3$

In this paper we prove three different Liouville type theorems for the steady Navier-Stokes equations in $\Bbb R^3$. In the first theorem we improve logarithmically the well-known $L^{\frac92} (\Bbb R^3)$ result. In the second theorem we present a sufficient condition for the trivially of the solution($v=0$) in terms of the head pressure, $Q=\frac12 |v|^2 +p$. The imposed integrability condition here has the same scaling property as the Dirichlet integral. In the last theorem we present Fubini type condition, which guarantee $v=0$.

On the Geometric Regularity Conditions for the 3D Navier-Stokes Equations

We prove geometrically improved version of Prodi-Serrin type blow-up criterion. Let $v$ and $ω$ be the velocity and the vorticity of solutions to the 3D Navier-Stokes equations and denote $\{f\}_+=\max\{f, 0\}$ , $Q_T=\Bbb R^3\times (0, T)$. If $\left\{\left( v \times \fracω{|ω|} \right)\cdot \frac{Λ^βv}{|Λ^βv|}\right\}_+ \in L^{γ, α}_{x,t} (Q_T)$ with $3/γ+2/α\leq 1$ for some $γ>3$ and $1 \leq β\leq 2$, then the local smooth solution $v$ of the Navier-Stokes equations on $(0,T)$ can be continued to $(0, T+δ)$ for some $δ>0$. We also prove localized version of a special case of this. Let $v$ be a suitable weak solution to the Navier-tokes equations in a space-time domain containing $z_0= (x_0, t_0)$, let $Q_{z_0, r}=B_{x_0, r} \times (t_0-r^2, t_0)$ be a parabolic cylinder in the domain. We show that if either $\left\{\left( v \times \fracω{|ω|}\right) \cdot \frac{\nabla \times ω}{|\nabla \times ω|}\right\}_{+} \in L^{γ, α}_{x,t}(Q_{z_0, r})$ with $\frac{3}γ+\frac{2}α \leq 1$, or $\left\{\left(\frac{v}{|v|} \times ω\right) \cdot \frac{\nabla \times ω}{|\nabla \times ω|}\right\}_{+} \in L^{γ, α}_{x,t}(Q_{z_0, r})$ with $\frac{3}γ+\frac{2}α \leq 2$, ($γ\geq 2$, $α\geq 2$), then $z_0$ is a regular point for $v$. This improves previous local regularity criteria for the suitable weak solutions.

On the Liouville theorem for weak Beltrami flows

We study Beltrami flows in the setting of weak solution to the stationary Euler equations in $\Bbb R^3$. For this weak Beltrami flow we prove the regularity and the Liouville property. In particular, we show that if tangential part of the velocity has certain decay property at infinity, then the solution becomes trivial. This decay condition of of the velocity is weaker than the previously known sufficient conditions for the Liouville property of the Betrami flows. For the proof we establish a mean value formula and other various formula for the tangential and the normal components of the weak solutions to the stationary Euler equations.

Global regularity for a model Navier-Stokes equations on $\Bbb R^3$

We study a nonlinear parabolic system for a time dependent solenoidal vector field on $\Bbb R^3$. The nonlinear term of this new model equations is obtained slightly modifying that of the Navier-Stokes equations. The system has the same scaling property and the Galileian invariance as the Navier-Stokes equations. For such system we prove the global regularity for a smooth initial data.

Local well-posedness for the Hall-MHD equations with fractional magnetic diffusion

The Hall-magnetohydrodynamics (Hall-MHD) equations, rigorously derived from kinetic models, are useful in describing many physical phenomena in geophysics and astrophysics. This paper studies the local well-posedness of classical solutions to the Hall-MHD equations with the magnetic diffusion given by a fractional Laplacian operator, $(-Δ)^α$. Due to the presence of the Hall term in the Hall-MHD equations, standard energy estimates appear to indicate that we need $α\ge 1$ in order to obtain the local well-posedness. This paper breaks the barrier and shows that the fractional Hall-MHD equations are locally well-posed for any $α>\frac12$. The approach here fully exploits the smoothing effects of the dissipation and establishes the local bounds for the Sobolev norms through the Besov space techniques. The method presented here may be applicable to similar situations involving other partial differential equations.

Remarks on the asymptotically discretely self-similar solutions of the Navier-Stokes and the Euler equations

We study scenarios of self-similar type blow-up for the incompressible Navier-Stokes and the Euler equations. The previous notions of the discretely (backward) self-similar solution and the asymptotically self-similar solution are generalized to the locally asymptotically discretely self-similar solution. We prove that there exists no such locally asymptotically discretely self-similar blow-up for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations if the blow-up profile is a time periodic function belonging to $C^1(\Bbb R ; L^3(\Bbb R^3)\cap C^2 (\Bbb R^3))$. For the 3D Euler equations we show that the scenario of asymptotically discretely self-similar blow-up is excluded if the blow-up profile satisfies suitable integrability conditions.

An incompressible 2D didactic model with singularity and explicit solutions of the 2D Boussinesq equations

We give an example of a well posed, finite energy, 2D incompressible active scalar equation with the same scaling as the surface quasi-geostrophic equation and prove that it can produce finite time singularities. In spite of its simplicity, this seems to be the first such example. Further, we construct explicit solutions of the 2D Boussinesq equations whose gradients grow exponentially in time for all time. In addition, we introduce a variant of the 2D Boussinesq equations which is perhaps a more faithful companion of the 3D axisymmetric Euler equations than the usual 2D Boussinesq equations.

Euler's equations and the maximum principle

In this paper we use maximum principle in the far field region for the time dependent self-similar Euler equations to exclude discretely self-similar blow-up for the Euler equations of the incompressible fluid flows. Our decay conditions near spatial infinity of the blow-up profile are given explicitly in terms the coefficient in the equations. We also deduce triviality of the discretely self-similar solution to the magnetohydrodynamic system(MHD), under suitable decay conditions near spatial infinity than the previous one. Applying similar argument directly to the Euler equations, we obtain a priori estimate of the vorticity in the far field region.

Remark on Luo-Hou's ansatz for a self-similar solution to the 3D Euler equations

In this note we show that Luo-Hou's ansatz for the self-similar solution to the axisymmetric solution to the 3D Euler equations leads to triviality of the solution under suitable decay condition of the blow-up profile. The equations for the blow-up profile reduces to an over-determined system of partial differential equations, whose only solution with decay is the trivial solution. We also propose a generalization of Luo-Hou's ansatz. Using the vanishing of the normal velocity at the boundary, we show that this generalized self-similar ansatz also leads to a trivial solution. These results show that the self-similar ansatz may be valid either only in a time-dependent region which shrinks to the boundary circle at the self-similar rate, or under different boundary conditions at spatial infinity of the self-similar profile.

Continuation of the zero set for discretely self-similar solutions to the Euler equations

We are concerned on the study of the unique continuation type property for the 3D incompressible Euler equations in the self-similar type form. Discretely self-similar solution is a generalized notion of the self-similar solution, which is equivalent to a time periodic solution of the time dependent self-similar Euler equations. We prove the unique continuation type theorem for the discretely self-similar solutions to the Euler equations in $\Bbb R^3$. More specifically, we suppose there exists an open set $G\subset \Bbb R^3$ containing the origin such that the velocity field $V\in C_s^1C^{2}_y (\Bbb R^{3+1})$ vanishes on $G\times (0, S_0)$, where $S_0 > 0$ is the temporal period for $V(y,s)$. Then, we show $V(y,s)=0$ for all $(y,s)\in \Bbb R^{3+1}$. Similar property also holds for the inviscid magnetohydrodynamic system

Liouville-type theorems for the forced Euler equations and the Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper we study the Liouville-type properties for solutions to the steady incompressible Euler equations with forces in $\Bbb R^N$. If we assume "single signedness condition" on the force, then we can show that a $C^1 (\Bbb R^N)$ solution $(v,p)$ with $|v|^2+ |p|\in L^{\frac{q}{2}}(\Bbb R^N)$, $q\in (\frac{3N}{N-1}, \infty)$ is trivial, $v=0$. For the solution of of the steady Navier-Stokes equations, satisfying $v(x)\to 0$ as $|x|\to \infty$, the condition $\int_{\Bbb R^3} |Δv|^{\frac65} dx<\infty$, which is stronger than the important D-condition, $\int_{\Bbb R^3} |\nabla v|^2 dx <\infty$, but both having the same scaling property, implies that $v=0$. In the appendix we reprove the Theorem 1.1(\cite{cha0}), using the self-similar Euler equations directly.

On the blow-up criterion and small data global existence for the Hall-magnetohydrodynamics

In this paper, we establish an optimal blow-up criterion for classical solutions to the incompressible resistive Hall-magnetohydrodynamic equations. We also prove two global-in-time existence results of the classical solutions for small initial data, the smallness conditions of which are given by the suitable Sobolev and the Besov norms respectively. Although the Sobolev space version is already an improvement of the corrresponding result in \cite{Chae-Degond-Liu}, the optimality in terms of the scaling property is achieved via the Besov space estimate. The special property of the energy estimate in terms of $\dot{B}^s_{2,1}$ norm is essential for this result. Contrary to the usual MHD the global well-posedness in the $2\frac12$ dimensional Hall-MHD is wide open.

Singularity formation for the incompressible Hall-MHD equations without resistivity

In this paper we show that the incompressible Hall-MHD system without resistivity is not globally in time well-posed in any Sobolev space $H^{m}(\mathbb{R}^3)$ for any $m>\frac{7}{2}$. Namely, either the system is locally ill-posed in $H^{m}(\mathbb{R}^3)$, or it is locally well-posed, but there exists an initial data in $H^{m}(\mathbb{R}^3)$, for which the $H^{m}(\mathbb{R}^3)$ norm of solution blows-up in finite time if $m>7/2$. In the latter case we choose an axisymmetric initial data $u_0(x)=u_{0r}(r,z)e_r+ b_{0z}(r,z)e_z$ and $B_0(x)=b_{0θ}(r,z)e_θ$, and reduce the system to the axisymmetric setting. If the convection term survives sufficiently long time, then the Hall term generates the singularity on the axis of symmetry and we have $ \lim\sup_{t\to t_*} \sup_{z\in \Bbb R} |\partial_z\partial_r b_θ(r=0,z)|=\infty$ for some $t_*>0$.

Localized energy equalities for the Navier-Stokes and the Euler equations

Let $(v,p)$ be a smooth solution pair of the velocity and the pressure for the Navier-Stokes(Euler) equations on $\Bbb R^N\times (0, T)$, $N\geq 3$. We set the Bernoulli function $Q=1/2 |v|^2 +p$. Under suitable decay conditions at infinity for $(v,p)$ we prove that for almost all $α(t)$ and $β(t)$ defined on $(0, T)$ there holds \bqn &&\int_{\{α(t)< Q(x,t)<β(t)\}} (1/2\frac{\partial}{\partial t} |v|^2+ν|ø|^2) dx =ν\int_{Q(x,t)= β(t)} |\nabla Q|dS && {1.7in}-ν\int_{Q(x,t)= α(t)} |\nabla Q|dS, \eqn where $ø=$ curl $v$ is the vorticity. This shows that, in each region squeezed between two levels of the Bernoulli function, besides the energy dissipation due to the enstrophy, the energy flows into the region through the level hypersurface having the higher level, and the energy flows out of the region through the level hypersurface with the lower level. Passing $α(t)\downarrow\inf_{x\in \Bbb R^N} Q(x,t)$ and $ β(t)\uparrow\sup_{x\in \Bbb R^N} Q(x,t)$, we recover the well-known energy equality, $ 1/2\frac{d}{dt} \int_{\Bbb R^N} |v|^2=-ν\int_{\Bbb R^N} |ø|^2 dx.$ A weaker version of the above equality under the weaker decay assumption of the solution at spatial infinity is also derived. The stationary version of the equality implies the previous Liouville type results on the Navier-Stokes equations.

On formation of a locally self-similar collapse in the incompressible Euler equations

The paper addresses the question of existence of a locally self-similar blow-up for the incompressible Euler equations. Several exclusion results are proved based on the $L^p$-condition for velocity or vorticity and for a range of scaling exponents. In particular, in $N$ dimensions if in self-similar variables $u \in L^p$ and $u \sim \frac{1}{t^{\a/(1+\a)}}$, then the blow-up does not occur provided $\a >N/2$ or $-1<\a\leq N/p$. This includes the $L^3$ case natural for the Navier-Stokes equations. For $\a = N/2$ we exclude profiles with an asymptotic power bounds of the form $ |y|^{-N-1+\d} \lesssim |u(y)| \lesssim |y|^{1-\d}$. Homogeneous near infinity solutions are eliminated as well except when homogeneity is scaling invariant.

On the uniqueness of solution to the steady Euler equations with perturbations

In this paper we study the uniqueness property of solutions to the steady incompressible Euler equations with perturbations in $\Bbb R^N$. Our perturbations include as special cases the Euler equations with a `single signed' nonlinear term, the self-similar Euler equations, and the steady Navier-Stokes equations. For these equations show that suitable decay assumptions at infinity on the solution or its derivatives, imposed by the $L^q$ conditions imply that the only possible solution is zero.

Blow-up, zero $α$ limit and the Liouville type theorem for the Euler-Poincaré equations

In this paper we study the Euler-Poincaré equations in $\Bbb R^N$. We prove local existence of weak solutions in $W^{2,p}(\Bbb R^N),$ $p>N$, and local existence of unique classical solutions in $H^k (\Bbb R^N)$, $k>N/2+3$, as well as a blow-up criterion. For the zero dispersion equation($α=0$) we prove a finite time blow-up of the classical solution. We also prove that as the dispersion parameter vanishes, the weak solution converges to a solution of the zero dispersion equation with sharp rate as $α\to0$, provided that the limiting solution belongs to $C([0, T);H^k(\Bbb R^N))$ with $k>N/2 +3$. For the {\em stationary weak solutions} of the Euler-Poincaré equations we prove a Liouville type theorem. Namely, for $α>0$ any weak solution $\mathbf{u}\in H^1(\Bbb R^N)$ is $\mathbf{u}=0$; for $α=0$ any weak solution $\mathbf{u}\in L^2(\Bbb R^N)$ is $\mathbf{u}=0$.

Generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equations with singular velocities

This paper establishes several existence and uniqueness results for two families of active scalar equations with velocity fields determined by the scalars through very singular integrals. The first family is a generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation with the velocity field $u$ related to the scalar $θ$ by $u=\nabla^\perpΛ^{β-2}θ$, where $1<β\le 2$ and $Λ=(-Δ)^{1/2}$ is the Zygmund operator. The borderline case $β=1$ corresponds to the SQG equation and the situation is more singular for $β>1$. We obtain the local existence and uniqueness of classical solutions, the global existence of weak solutions and the local existence of patch type solutions. The second family is a dissipative active scalar equation with $u=\nabla^\perp (\log(I-Δ))^μθ$ for $μ>0$, which is at least logarithmically more singular than the velocity in the first family. We prove that this family with any fractional dissipation possesses a unique local smooth solution for any given smooth data. This result for the second family constitutes a first step towards resolving the global regularity issue recently proposed by K. Ohkitani \cite{Oh}.

On the Liouville type theorem for stationary compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations in $\Bbb R^N$

In this paper we prove Liouville type result for the stationary solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations(NSP) and the compressible Navier-Stokes equations(NS) in $\Bbb R^N$, $N\geq 2$. Assuming suitable integrability and the uniform boundedness conditions for the solutions we are led to the conclusion that $v=0$. In the case of (NS) we deduce that the similar integrability conditions imply $v=0$ and $ρ=$constant on $\Bbb R^N$. This shows that if we impose the the non-vacuum boundary condition at spatial infinity for (NS), $v\to 0$ and $ρ\to ρ_\infty >0$, then $v=0$, $ρ=ρ_\infty$ are the solutions.

The 2D Boussinesq equations with logarithmically supercritical velocities

This paper investigates the global (in time) regularity of solutions to a system of equations that generalize the vorticity formulation of the 2D Boussinesq-Navier-Stokes equations. The velocity $u$ in this system is related to the vorticity $ω$ through the relations $u=\nabla^\perp ψ$ and $Δψ= Λ^σ(\log(I-Δ))^γω$, which reduces to the standard velocity-vorticity relation when $σ=γ=0$. When either $σ>0$ or $γ>0$, the velocity $u$ is more singular. The "quasi-velocity" $v$ determined by $\nabla\times v =ω$ satisfies an equation of very special structure. This paper establishes the global regularity and uniqueness of solutions for the case when $σ=0$ and $γ\ge 0$. In addition, the vorticity $ω$ is shown to be globally bounded in several functional settings such as $L^2$ for $σ>0$ in a suitable range.

Dissipative models generalizing the 2D Navier-Stokes and the surface quasi-geostrophic equations

This paper is devoted to the global (in time) regularity problem for a family of active scalar equations with fractional dissipation. Each component of the velocity field $u$ is determined by the active scalar $θ$ through $\mathcal{R} Λ^{-1} P(Λ) θ$ where $\mathcal{R}$ denotes a Riesz transform, $Λ=(-Δ)^{1/2}$ and $P(Λ)$ represents a family of Fourier multiplier operators. The 2D Navier-Stokes vorticity equations correspond to the special case $P(Λ)=I$ while the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation to $P(Λ) =Λ$. We obtain the global regularity for a class of equations for which $P(Λ)$ and the fractional power of the dissipative Laplacian are required to satisfy an explicit condition. In particular, the active scalar equations with any fractional dissipation and with $P(Λ)= (\log(I-Δ))^γ$ for any $γ>0$ are globally regular.

Inviscid models generalizing the 2D Euler and the surface quasi-geostrophic equations

Any classical solution of the 2D incompressible Euler equation is global in time. However, it remains an outstanding open problem whether classical solutions of the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation preserve their regularity for all time. This paper studies solutions of a family of active scalar equations in which each component $u_j$ of the velocity field $u$ is determined by the scalar $θ$ through $u_j =\mathcal{R} Λ^{-1} P(Λ) θ$ where $\mathcal{R}$ is a Riesz transform and $Λ=(-Δ)^{1/2}$. The 2D Euler vorticity equation corresponds to the special case $P(Λ)=I$ while the SQG equation to the case $P(Λ) =Λ$. We develop tools to bound $\|\nabla u||_{L^\infty}$ for a general class of operators $P$ and establish the global regularity for the Loglog-Euler equation for which $P(Λ)= (\log(I+\log(I-Δ)))^γ$ with $0\le γ\le 1$. In addition, a regularity criterion for the model corresponding to $P(Λ)=Λ^β$ with $0\le β\le 1$ is also obtained.

Vortex Condensates in the Relativistic Self-Dual Maxwell-Chern-Simons-higgs System

The existence of vortex condensates in the self-dual Maxwell-Chern-Simons-Higgs System on a flat torus is proved by the super-sub solution method under the assumption that the total vortex number in a given periodic domain is not too large. We also study the limiting behaviors of the solutions as the Chern-Simons coupling constant goes to some limits. In the Abelian-Higgs limit we find that our solutions strongly converges to the corresponding vortex condensates of the Abelian-Higgs system, while in the Chern-Simons limit the solutions strongly converges to the corresponding vortex condensates of Chern-Simons system.
