Semantic-aware Contrastive Learning for More Accurate Semantic Parsing

Since the meaning representations are detailed and accurate annotations which express fine-grained sequence-level semtantics, it is usually hard to train discriminative semantic parsers via Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) in an autoregressive fashion. In this paper, we propose a semantic-aware contrastive learning algorithm, which can learn to distinguish fine-grained meaning representations and take the overall sequence-level semantic into consideration. Specifically, a multi-level online sampling algorithm is proposed to sample confusing and diverse instances. Three semantic-aware similarity functions are designed to accurately measure the distance between meaning representations as a whole. And a ranked contrastive loss is proposed to pull the representations of the semantic-identical instances together and push negative instances away. Experiments on two standard datasets show that our approach achieves significant improvements over MLE baselines and gets state-of-the-art performances by simply applying semantic-aware contrastive learning on a vanilla Seq2Seq model.

Non-superconducting electronic ground state in pressurized BaFe$_2$S$_3$ and BaFe$_2$S$_{2.5}$Se$_{0.5}$

We report a comprehensive study of the spin ladder compound BaFe$_2$S$_{2.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ using neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, high pressure synchrotron diffraction, and high pressure transport techniques. We find that BaFe$_2$S$_{2.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ possesses the same $Cmcm$ structure and stripe antiferromagnetic order as does BaFe$_2$S$_3$, but with a reduced N{é}el temperature of $T_N=98$ K compared to 120 K for the undoped system, and a slightly increased ordered moment of 1.40$μ_B$ per iron. The low-energy spin excitations in BaFe$_2$S$_{2.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ are likewise similar to those observed in BaFe$_2$S$_{3}$. However, unlike the reports of superconductivity in BaFe$_2$S$_3$ below $T_c \sim 14$~K under pressures of 10~GPa or more, we observe no superconductivity in BaFe$_2$S$_{2.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ at any pressure up to 19.7~GPa. In contrast, the resistivity exhibits an upturn at low temperature under pressure. Furthermore, we show that additional high-quality samples of BaFe$_2$S$_3$ synthesized for this study likewise fail to become superconducting under pressure, instead displaying a similar upturn in resistivity at low temperature. These results demonstrate that microscopic, sample-specific details play an important role in determining the ultimate electronic ground state in this spin ladder system. We suggest that the upturn in resistivity at low temperature in both BaFe$_2$S$_3$ and BaFe$_2$S$_{2.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ may result from Anderson localization induced by S vacancies and random Se substitutions, enhanced by the quasi-one-dimensional ladder structure.

Structural, magnetic, and electronic evolution of the spin-ladder system BaFe$_2$S$_{3-x}$Se$_x$ with isoelectronic substitution

We report experimental studies of a series of BaFe$_2$S$_{3-x}$Se$_x$ ($0\leq x\leq3$) single crystals and powder specimens using x-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, muon spin relaxation, and electrical transport measurements. A structural transformation from Cmcm (BaFe$_2$S$_3$) to Pnma (BaFe$_2$Se$_3$) was identified around $x = 0.7\sim 1$. Neutron diffraction measurements on the samples with $x$ = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.7 reveal that the N$é$el temperature of the stripe antiferromagnetic order is gradually suppressed from $\sim$120 to 85 K, while the magnitude of the ordered Fe$^{2+}$ moments shows very little variation. Similarly, the block antiferromagnetic order in BaFe$_2$Se$_3$ remains robust for $1.5\leq x\leq3$ with negligible variation in the ordered moment and a slight decrease of the N$é$el temperature from 250 K ($x=3$) to 225 K ($x=1.5$). The sample with $x=1$ near the Cmcm and Pnma border shows coexisting, two-dimensional, short-range stripe- and block-type antiferromagnetic correlations. The system remains insulating for all $x$, but the thermal activation gap shows an abrupt increase when traversing the boundary from the Cmcm stripe phase to the Pnma block phase. The results demonstrate that the crystal structure, magnetic order, and electronic properties are strongly coupled in the BaFe$_2$S$_{3-x}$Se$_x$ system.

Modulated magnetism and anomalous electronic transport in $\rm Ce_3Cu_4As_4O_2$

The complex magnetism and transport properties of tetragonal Ce$_3$Cu$_4$As$_4$O$_2$ were examined through neutron scattering and physical properties measurements on polycrystalline samples. The lamellar structure consists of alternating layers of $\rm CeCu_4As_4$ with a single square Ce lattice and oxygen-linked Ce bi-layer $\rm Ce_2O_2$. Extending along $\bf c$, a tube-like Fermi surface from DFT calculations points to a quasi-two-dimensional electronic system. Peaks in the specific heat at the Neél temperature $T_{N}=24$ $\rm K$, $T_{2}~=~16 $ $\rm K$ and $T_{3}~=~1.9$ $ \rm K$ indicate three magnetic phase transitions or distinct cross-over phenomena. For $T<T_{N}$ neutron diffraction indicates the development of ferromagnetic ab sheets for both Ce sites, with alternating polarization along $\bf{c}$, a wave vector ${\bf k}_{1}={\bf c}^*$. For $T<T_{2}$, quasi-two-dimensional low-energy spin fluctuations with ${\bf k}_{2}=\frac{1}{2}{\bf a}^*$ and polarized perpendicular to ${\bf k}_{2}$ are suppressed. The data are consistent with quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnetic order in the $\rm CeCu_4As_4$ planes polarized along the ${\bf k}_{2}$ wave vector. $T_{3}$ marks a spin-flop transition where the ${\bf k}_{1}$ staggered magnetization switches to in-plane polarization. While the narrow 4f bands lie deep below the Fermi surface, there are significant transport anomalies associated with the transitions; in particular a substantial reduction in resistivity for $T<T_{N}$. At $T=100$ $ \rm mK$ the ${\bf k}_1$ modulated staggered moment is $0.85~μ_B$, which matches the $0.8~μ_B$ saturation magnetization achieved for H $~=~7$ $ \rm T$ at $T~=~2$ $ \rm K$. From low T Lorentzian fits the correlation length is in excess of 75 Å. We argue the unusual sequence of magnetic transitions results from competing interactions and anisotropies for the two Ce sites.

Block magnetic excitations in the orbitally selective Mott insulator BaFe2Se3

Iron pnictides and selenides display a variety of unusual magnetic phases originating from the interplay between electronic, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom. Using powder inelastic neutron scattering on the two-leg ladder BaFe2Se3, we fully characterize the static and dynamic spin correlations associated with the Fe4 block state, an exotic magnetic ground state observed in this low-dimensional magnet and in Rb0.89Fe1.58Se2. All the magnetic excitations of the Fe4 block state predicted by an effective Heisenberg model with localized spins are observed below 300 meV and quantitatively reproduced. However, the data only account for 16 mub^2 per Fe2+, approximatively 2/3 of the total spectral weight expected for localized S=2 moments. Our results highlight how orbital degrees of freedom in iron-based magnets can conspire to stabilize an exotic magnetic state.

Quasi-two-dimensional non-collinear magnetism in the Mott insulator Sr$_2$F$_2$Fe$_2$OS$_2$

The magnetism of Sr$_2$F$_2$Fe$_2$OS$_2$ was examined through neutron powder diffraction and thermodynamic and transport measurements. Quasi-two-dimensional magnetic order develops below $T_N$ = 106(2) K with an in-plane correlation length exceeding 310 Å and an out-of-plane correlation length of just 17(3) Å. The data are consistent with a two-k structure with $k_1$ = (1/2, 0, 1/2) and $k_2$ = (0, 1/2, 1/2) and an ordered moment of 3.3(1) $μ_B$ oriented along the in-plane components of k. This structure is composed of orthogonal AFM chains intersecting at super-exchange mediating O sites. Density Functional Theory (DFT) also points to this structure and a narrower Fe 3d band than for the iron pnictides from which electronic correlations produce a Mott insulator.

Spin Selective Purcell Effect in a Quantum Dot Microcavity System

We demonstrate the selective coupling of a single quantum dot exciton spin state with the cavity mode in a quantum dot-micropillar cavity system. By tuning an external magnetic field, the Zeeman splitted exciton spin states coupled differently with the cavity due to field manipulated energy detuning. We found a 26 times increase in the emission intensity of spin-up exciton state with respect to spin-down exciton state at resonance due to Purcell effect, which gives rise to the selective enhancement of light emission with the circular polarization degree up to 93%. A four-level rate equation model is developed and quantitatively agrees well with our experimental data. Our results pave the way for the realization of future quantum light sources and the quantum information processing applications.
