Asymptotic analysis on positive solutions of the Lane-Emden system with nearly critical exponents

We concern a family $\{(u_{\varepsilon},v_{\varepsilon})\}_{\varepsilon > 0}$ of solutions of the Lane-Emden system on a smooth bounded convex domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$ \[\begin{cases} -Δu_{\varepsilon} = v_{\varepsilon}^p &\text{in } Ω,\\ -Δv_{\varepsilon} = u_{\varepsilon}^{q_{\varepsilon}} &\text{in } Ω,\\ u_{\varepsilon},\, v_{\varepsilon} > 0 &\text{in } Ω,\\ u_{\varepsilon} = v_{\varepsilon} =0 &\text{on } \partialΩ\end{cases}\] for $N \ge 4$, $\max\{1,\frac{3}{N-2}\} < p < q_{\varepsilon}$ and small \[\varepsilon := \frac{N}{p+1} + \frac{N}{q_{\varepsilon}+1} - (N-2) > 0.\] This system appears as the extremal equation of the Sobolev embedding $W^{2,(p+1)/p}(Ω) \hookrightarrow L^{q_{\varepsilon}+1}(Ω)$, and is also closely related to the Calderón-Zygmund estimate. Under the a natural energy condition \[\sup_{\varepsilon > 0} \left(\|u_{\varepsilon}\|_{W^{2,{p+1 \over p}}(Ω)} + \|v_{\varepsilon}\|_{W^{2,{q_{\varepsilon}+1 \over q_{\varepsilon}}}(Ω)}\right) < \infty,\] we prove that the multiple bubbling phenomena may arise for the family $\{(u_{\varepsilon},v_{\varepsilon})\}_{\varepsilon > 0}$, and establish a detailed qualitative and quantitative description. If $p < \frac{N}{N-2}$, the nonlinear structure of the system makes the interaction between bubbles so strong, so the determination process of the blow-up rates and locations is completely different from that of the classical Lane-Emden equation. If $p \ge \frac{N}{N-2}$, the blow-up scenario is relatively close to (but not the same as) that of the classical Lane-Emden equation, and only one-bubble solutions can exist. Even in the latter case, the standard approach does not work well, which forces us to devise a new method. Using our analysis, we also deduce a general existence theorem valid on any smooth bounded domains.

Multiple blowing-up solutions to critical elliptic systems in bounded domains

We construct families of blowing-up solutions to elliptic systems on smooth bounded domains in the Euclidean space, which are variants of the critical Lane-Emden system and analogous to the Brezis-Nirenberg problem. We find a function which governs blowing-up points and rates, observing that it reflects the strong nonlinear characteristic of the system. By using it, we also prove that a single blowing-up solution exists in general domains, and construct examples of contractible domains where multiple blowing-up solutions are allowed to exist. We believe that a variety of new ideas and arguments developed here will help to analyze blowing-up phenomena in related Hamiltonian-type systems.

Minimal energy solutions to the fractional Lane-Emden system, I: Existence and singularity formation

This is the first of two papers which study asymptotic behavior of minimal energy solutions to the fractional Lane-Emden system in a smooth bounded domain $Ω$ \[(-Δ)^s u = v^p, \quad (-Δ)^s v = u^q \text{ in } Ω\quad \text{and} \quad u = v = 0 \text{ on } \pa Ω\quad \text{for } 0 < s < 1\] under the assumption that the subcritical pair $(p,q)$ approaches to the critical Sobolev hyperbola. If $p = 1$, the above problem is reduced to the subcritical higher-order fractional Lane-Emden equation with the Navier boundary condition \[(-Δ)^s u = u^{\frac{n+2s}{n-2s}-\ep} \text{ in } Ω\quad \text{and} \quad u = (-Δ)^{s \over 2} u = 0 \quad \text{for } 1 < s < 2.\] The main objective of this paper is to deduce the existence of minimal energy solutions, and to examine their (normalized) pointwise limits provided that $Ω$ is convex. As a by-product of our study, a new approach for the existence of an extremal function for the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality is provided.

A non-compactness result on the fractional Yamabe problem in large dimensions

Let $(X^{n+1}, g^+)$ be an $(n+1)$-dimensional asymptotically hyperbolic manifold with a conformal infinity $(M^n, [\hat{h}])$. The fractional Yamabe problem addresses to solve \[P^γ[g^+,\hat{h}] (u) = cu^{n+2γ\over n-2γ}, \quad u > 0 \quad \text{on } M\] where $c \in \mathbb{R}$ and $P^γ[g^+,\hat{h}]$ is the fractional conformal Laplacian whose principal symbol is $(-Δ)^γ$. In this paper, we construct a metric on the half space $X = \mathbb{R}^{n+1}_+$, which is conformally equivalent to the unit ball, for which the solution set of the fractional Yamabe equation is non-compact provided that $n \ge 24$ for $γ\in (0, γ^*)$ and $n \ge 25$ for $γ\in [γ^*,1)$ where $γ^* \in (0, 1)$ is a certain transition exponent. The value of $γ^*$ turns out to be approximately 0.940197.

Classification of finite energy solutions to the fractional Lane-Emden-Fowler equations with slightly subcritical exponents

We study qualitative properties of solutions to the fractional Lane-Emden-Fowler equations with slightly subcritical exponents where the associated fractional Laplacian is defined in terms of either the spectra of Dirichlet Laplacian or the integral representation. As a consequence, we classify the asymptotic behavior of all finite energy solutions. Our method also provides a simple and unified approach to deal with the classical (local) Lane-Emden-Fowler equation for any dimension greater than 2.

On perturbations of the fractional Yamabe problem

The fractional Yamabe problem, proposed by González-Qing (2013, Anal. PDE) is a geometric question which concerns the existence of metrics with constant fractional scalar curvature. It extends the phenomena which were discovered in the classical Yamabe problem and the boundary Yamabe problem to the realm of nonlocal conformally invariant operators. We investigate a non-compactness property of the fractional Yamabe problem by constructing bubbling solutions to its small perturbations.

Asymptotic behavior of solutions for nonlinear elliptic problems with the fractional Laplacian

In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of least energy solutions and the existence of multiple bubbling solutions of nonlinear elliptic equations involving the fractional Laplacians and the critical exponents. This work can be seen as a nonlocal analog of the results of Han (Ann. Inst. H. Poincare Anal. Non Lineaire, 1991) and Rey (J. Funct. Anal., 1990).

Qualitative properties of multi-bubble solutions for nonlinear elliptic equations involving critical exponents

The objective of this paper is to obtain qualitative characteristics of multi-bubble solutions to the Lane-Emden-Fowler equations with slightly subcritical exponents given any dimension $n \ge 3$. By examining the linearized problem at each $m$-bubble solution, we provide a number of estimates on the first $(n+2)m$-eigenvalues and their corresponding eigenfunctions. Specifically, we present a new proof of the classical theorem due to Bahri-Li-Rey (Calc. Var. Partial Differential Equations 3 (1995) 67-93) which states that if $n \ge 4$, then the Morse index of a multi-bubble solution is governed by a certain symmetric matrix whose component consists of a combination of Green's function, the Robin function, and their first and second derivatives. Our proof also allows us to handle the intricate case $n = 3$.

Supercritical problems in domains with thin toroidal holes

In this paper we study the Lane-Emden-Fowler equation $$(P)_ε \{Δu+|u|^{q-2}u=0 \ \hbox{in}\ \mathcal D_ε, u=0 \ \hbox{on}\ \partial\mathcal D_ε.$$ Here $\mathcal D_ε= \mathcal D \setminus \{x \in \mathcal D \ : \ \mathrm{dist}(x,Γ_\ell)\le ε\}$, $\mathcal D$ is a smooth bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $Γ_\ell$ is an $\ell-$dimensional closed manifold such that $Γ_\ell \subset \mathcal D$ with $1\le \ell \le N-3$ and $q={2(N-\ell)\over N-\ell-2}$. We prove that, under some symmetry assumptions, the number of sign changing solutions to $(P)_ε$ increases as $ε$ goes to zero.
