$B_{\rm 1g}$ phonon anomaly driven by Fermi surface instability at intermediate temperature in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$

We performed temperature- and doping-dependent high-resolution Raman spectroscopy experiments on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ to study $B$$_{\rm 1g}$ phonons. The temperature dependence of the real part of the phonon self-energy shows a distinct kink at $T=T_{\rm B1g}$ above $T$$_{\rm c}$ due to softening, in addition to the one due to the onset of the superconductivity. $T$$_{\rm B1g}$ is clearly different from the pseudogap temperature with a maximum in the underdoped region. The region between $T$$_{\rm B1g}$ and $T$$_{\rm c}$ resembles that of superconducting fluctuation or charge density wave order. While the true origin of the $B$$_{\rm 1g}$ phonon softening is not known, we can attribute it to a gap on the Fermi surface due to an electronic order. Our results may reveal the role of the $B$$_{\rm 1g}$ phonon not only in the superconducting state but also in the intertwined orders in multilayer copper oxide high-$T$$_{\rm c}$ superconductors.

Electronic Structure of $\mathrm{Sr}_{1-y}\mathrm{Ca}_{y}\mathrm{Fe_{2}}(\mathrm{As}_{1-x}\mathrm{P}_{x}\mathrm{)_{2}}$ ($x$ = 0.25, $y$ = 0.08) Revealed by Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

We have investigated the electronic structure of $\mathrm{Sr}_{1-y}\mathrm{Ca}_{y}\mathrm{Fe_{2}}(\mathrm{As}_{1-x}\mathrm{P}_{x}\mathrm{)_{2}}$ ($x$ = 0.25, $y$ = 0.08) by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. From the comparison with the results of $\mathrm{BaFe_{2}}(\mathrm{As}_{1-x}\mathrm{P}_{x}\mathrm{)_{2}}$, the effects of smaller structural anisotropy ($c/a$) on the Fermi surfaces (FSs) and the gap structures are discussed. The observed FSs have three dimensional shapes. One of the hole FSs is strongly warped between the $Γ$ and $Z$ points, and the innermost FS observed at the $Z$ point disappears at the $Γ$ point, which is similar to the FS features of $\mathrm{SrFe_{2}}(\mathrm{As}_{1-x}\mathrm{P}_{x}\mathrm{)_{2}}$ ($x$ = 0.35). In the superconducting state, the node like gap-minimum is present for the $d_{xy}$ electron FS near the $X$ point, while the gaps around the other high symmetry points are isotropic. Several theoretical models based on the spin and/or the orbital fluctuation are examined to explain all these experimental results.

Lattice dynamics in FeSe via inelastic x-ray scattering and first-principles calculations

We report an inelastic x-ray scattering investigation of phonons in FeSe superconductor. Comparing the experimental phonon dispersion with density functional theory (DFT) calculations in the non-magnetic state, we found a significant disagreement between them. Improved overall agreement was obtained by allowing for spin-polarization in the DFT calculations, despite the absence of magnetic order in the experiment. This calculation gives a realistic approximation, at DFT level, of the disordered paramagnetic state of FeSe, in which strong spin fluctuations are present.

Multilayer Effects in Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+z Superconductors

We discuss the characteristic features of triple Cu-O2 layer cuprates superconductors, by comparing those of single and double layer cuprates superconductors. After a brief introduction to multilayer cuprates and their characteristic properties such as the doping imbalance between the inner and outer Cu-O2 planes (IP and OP, respectively) revealed by nuclear magnetic resonance, we present the experimental results of angle resolved photoemission and Raman scattering spectroscopy for the triple layer Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+z which showed two different superconducting gaps opening on the IP and OP. The doping dependence of the double peak structure in Raman spectra was found to be qualitatively consistent with that of single and double layer cuprates, if each layer doping for the IP and OP is taken into account. The fact that the IP and OP share the same electronic phase diagram and the same transition temperature (Tc) hints to a coupling between the IP and OP. Moreover, the energies of IP and OP Raman peaks were found to be very large, not scaling with Tc, which can be attributed to the strong influence of the pseudogap of the underdoped IP in triple layer cuprates. These findings suggest that the high Tc and the large gap ratio of triple layer cuprates are realized through a combination of the interlayer coupling between the OP and IP and the interaction between superconductivity and the pseudogap.

Effects of $c/a$ Anisotropy and Local Crystal Structure on Superconductivity in $A\mathrm{Fe_{2}}(\mathrm{As}_{1-x}\mathrm{P}_{x}\mathrm{)_{2}}$ ($A$=Ba$_{1-y}$Sr$_y$, Sr$_{1-y}$Ca$_y$ and Eu)

We investigated the effects of $c/a$ anisotropy and local crystal structure on superconductivity (SC) in As/P solid solution systems, $A\mathrm{Fe_{2}}(\mathrm{As}_{1-x}\mathrm{P}_{x}\mathrm{)_{2}}$ ($A$122P) with various $A$ ions. With decreasing $A$ site atomic size from $A$=Ba to Eu, the structural anisotropy decreases, and the rate of decreasing with $x$ also increases. The rapid narrowing of the region of antiferromagnetic composition ($x$) can be considered to be a result of this anisotropy change due mainly to the change in the Fermi surface (FS) nesting condition. By contrast, although the structural anisotropy systematically changes, the maximum $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ values are almost the same in all $A$122P systems except for Eu122P. These results indicate that the modification of the FS topology via the structural anisotropy does not affect SC. However local structural parameters, such as pnictogen height, are crucial for $T_{\mathrm{c}}$.

Importance of Fermi Surface Topology for In-Plane Resistivity Anisotropy in Hole- and Electron-Doped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$TM$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ (TM=Cr, Mn and Co)

The in-plane anisotropy of resistivity has been investigated for Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$TM$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ (TM-Ba122, TM$=$Cr, Mn, and Co) where the substitution sites are the same but the doped carriers are different for different TM elements. The Hall coefficient measurements indicated that hole carriers are effectively doped by Cr substitution but not by Mn substitution. It has been found that the resistivity difference $Δρ=ρ_{\rm b}-ρ_{\rm a}$ in the antiferromagnetic-orthorhombic (AFO) phase of Cr-Ba122 is initially positive but it turns to negative with increasing Cr content, whereas the positive $Δρ$ monotonically increases with Mn substitution in Mn-Ba122. In the paramagnetic-tetragonal phase, $Δρ$ is always positive, but it decreases with substitution in Cr-Ba122, in contrast to the electron-doped case. These results demonstrate that the resistivity anisotropy exhibits electron-hole asymmetry in both AFO and nematic phases and that it depends on the Fermi surface topology whether the carrier scattering results in a positive or negative $Δρ$.

Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy on SrFe$\mathrm{_2}$(As$\mathrm{_{1-x}}$P$\mathrm{_x}$)$\mathrm{_2}$

We investigated SrFe$\mathrm{_2}$(As$\mathrm{_{1-x}}$P$\mathrm{_x}$)$\mathrm{_2}$ single crystals with four different phosphorus concentrations x in the superconducting phase (x = 0.35, 0.46) and in the magnetic phase (x = 0, 0.2). The superconducting samples display a V-shaped superconducting gap, which suggests nodal superconductivity. Furthermore we determined the superconducting coherence length by measuring the spatially resolved superconducting density of states (DOS). Using inelastic tunneling spectroscopy we investigated excitations in the samples with four different phosphorus concentrations. Inelastic peaks are related to bosonic modes. Phonon and non-phonon mechanism for the origin of these peaks are discussed.

Electronic Phase Diagram of SrFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$: Effect of Structural Dimensionality

We have investigated the electronic properties of SrFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ ($0\leqq x\leqq1$) single crystals with postannealing treatment and established a phase diagram of this system. The postannealing treatment reduced the residual resistivity in an antiferromagnetic-orthorhombic phase and enhanced the superconducting transition temperature to $T_{c, optimal}$=33\,K in the superconducting phase. The obtained phase diagram and electronic properties are similar to those of BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ despite the large difference in lattice constants. This indicates that, for superconductivity, the dimensionality of the Fermi surface determined by the crystal structural anisotropy is less important than the pnictogen height from the Fe plane.

Persistence of superconducting condensate far above the critical temperature in YBa$_2$(Cu,Zn)$_3$O$_y$ revealed by $c$-axis optical conductivity measurements for several Zn concentrations and carrier doping levels

The superconductivity precursor phenomena in high temperature cuprate superconductors was studied by direct measurements of superconducting condensate with the use of the $c$-axis optical conductivity of YBa$_{2}$(Cu$_{1-x}$Zn$_{x}$)$_{3}$O$_{y}$ for several doping levels ($p$) as well as for several Zn-concentrations. Both of the real and imaginary part of the optical conductivity clearly showed that the superconducting carriers persist up to the high temperatures $T$$_{p}$ that is higher than the critical temperature $T$$_{c}$ but lower than the pseudogap temperature $T$$^{\ast}$. $T$$_{p}$ increases with reducing doping level like $T$$^{\ast}$, but decreases with Zn-substitution unlike $T$$^{\ast}$.

Coexistence of the Pseudogap and the Superconducting Gap Revealed by the \textit{c}-axis Optical Study of YBa$_{2}$(Cu$_{1-x}$Zn$_{x}$)$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$

To address the issue of the pseudogap in the superconducting state of the high temperature superconducting cuprates, we studied the temperature dependent redistribution of the spectral weight in the \textit{c}-axis polarized optical spectra for underdoped YBa$_{2}$(Cu$_{1-x}$Zn$_{x}$)$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ single crystals with $x=0,0.007,$ 0.012, and 0.04. It was found that for Zn substituted samples, the spectral weight transfer to the high energy region, which characterizes the pseudogap state, continues even below the superconducting transition temperature (\textit{T}$_{c}$), indicating the coexistence of the pseudogap and the superconducting gap. Moreover, the observation of the pseudogap in the Zn-doped non-superconducting sample gives evidence that the pseudogap is not a precursor of superconductivity.

Two Fermi surface states and two $T_{\rm c}$-rising mechanisms revealed by transport properties in $R$FeP$_{1-x}$As$_x$O$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ ($R$=La, Pr and Nd)

We demonstrate the relation between critical temperature $T_{\rm c}$ and transport properties in $R$FeP$_{1-x}$As$_x$O$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ ($R$=La, Pr and Nd). $T_{\rm c}$ and resistivity power-law exponent $n$ form a universal line on the $T_{\rm c}$ vs. $n$ plane for all the $R$-systems with $x$$<0.6\sim$0.8, indicating that $T_{\rm c}$ increases with bosonic fluctuation. Transport properties show anomalies suggesting a change of Fermi surfaces around $x$=0.6$\sim$0.8. Above $x$=0.6$\sim$0.8, $T_{\rm c}$ and $n$ approach the second $T_{\rm c}$-$n$ line for the higher $T_{\rm c}$ systems. A further increase of $T_{\rm c}$ above $x$=0.6$\sim$0.8 indicates the presence of an additional $T_{\rm c}$-rising mechanism in this system.

Optical Study of the Stripe-Ordered State

The effects of the stripe order on the optical spectra of La-based cuprates are reviewed. The main effect on the high Tc superconducting cuprates is to rapidly reduce the Josephson plasma frequency in the c-axis spectrum as a consequence of weakening of the Josephson coupling between CuO2 layers. This points toward a two dimensional (2D) superconductivity in the stripe phase, although it is difficult to realize a 2D superconductivity in real materials. We also discuss the experimental results suggesting the presence of stripe effect in other cuprates even if they do not show the static stripe phase. Compared to the c-axis spectra, the in-plane spectra are not so dramatically affected by the stripe order, showing a weak gap-like feature and reducing the condensate spectral weight.

Reflective terahertz time-domain spectroscopy measurement on the stripe-ordered superconductor La$_{1.84-y}$Nd$_y$Sr$_{0.16}$CuO$_4$

We measured reflectivity on static stripe-ordered La$_{1.84-y}$Nd$_y$Sr$_{0.16}$CuO$_4$ (LNSCO) $y$\,=\,0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 by means of reflective terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) with electric field polarized along c-axis, in which one can obtain lower frequency information than the conventional Fourier transform type spectrometer. Recently, two-dimensional superconducting (2DSC) property \cite{tajima,schafgans,li}, intra-layer perfect conductivity not accompanied with inter-layer superconducting behavior, was reported on LNSCO ($x$\,=0.15\,,\,$y$\,$\geq$\,0.2). We observed the existence of Josephson plasma edge, which suggests that 2DSC is not realized in these compounds.

Single crystal growth and physical properties of SrFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$

We report a crystal growth and physical properties of SrFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$. The single crystals for various $x$s were grown by a self flux method. For $x = 0.35$, $T_c$ reaches the maximum value of 30\,K and the electrical resistivity $ρ$($T$) shows $T$-linear dependence. As $x$ increases, $T_{c}$ decreases and $ρ$($T$) changes to $T^2$-behavior, indicating a standard Fermi liquid. These results suggest that a magnetic quantum critical point exists around $x=0.35$.

"Fragile superconductivity": a kinetic glass transition in the vortex matter of the high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O7-d

Of the many different kinds of glassy states found in nature, spin glasses and structural glasses (e.g. normal window glass) have probably received the most attention. One of the central questions concerning the glassy state is whether the "glass" is a distinct thermodynamic phase from the "liquid" phase. It is believed that this may actually be the case for spin glasses, whereas the glass transition in structural glasses appears to be mostly kinetic in nature. Supercooled structural liquids, however, exhibit a wide range of behaviors, which can be classified using the "strong-fragile" scheme of Angell, where the terms "strong" and "fragile" refer to Arrhenius and highly non-Arrhenius relaxation behaviors, respectively. For the extremely fragile liquids, a thermodynamic origin of the glass transition cannot be ruled out. A microscopic understanding of the complexity leading to different degrees of fragility and affecting the kinetic glass transition is, however, lacking. Also the connection, if any, between the different kind of glass states (spin, structural, etc.) is unclear. Here we examine the glassy behavior of a novel type of matter, namely the vortex matter in the high-temperature superconductor (HTSC) YBa2Cu3Ox.
