Lipschitz stable determination of polyhedral conductivity inclusions from local boundary measurements

We consider the problem of determining a polyhedral conductivity inclusion embedded in a homogeneous isotropic medium from boundary measurements. We prove global Lipschitz stability for the polyhedral inclusion from the local Dirichlet-to-Neumann map extending in a highly nontrivial way the results obtained in [18] and [19] in the two-dimensional case to the three-dimensional setting.

Lipschitz stable determination of polygonal conductivity inclusions in a layered medium from the Dirichlet to Neumann map

Using a distributed representation formula of the Gateaux derivative of the Dirichlet to Neumann map with respect to movements of a polygonal conductivity inclusion, [11], we extend the results obtained in [8] proving global Lipschitz stability for the determination of a polygonal conductivity inclusion embedded in a layered medium from knowledge of the Dirichlet to Neumann map.

Optimal identification of cavities in the Generalized Plane Stress problem in linear elasticity

For the Generalized Plane Stress (GPS) problem in linear elasticity, we obtain an optimal stability estimate of logarithmic type for the inverse problem of determining smooth cavities inside a thin isotropic cylinder {}from a single boundary measurement of traction and displacement. The result is obtained by reformulating the GPS problem as a Kirchhoff-Love plate-like problem in terms of the Airy's function, and by using the strong unique continuation at the boundary for a Kirchhoff-Love plate operator under homogeneous Dirichlet conditions, which has been recently obtained in \cite{l:arv}.

Propagation of smallness and size estimate in the second order elliptic equation with discontinuous complex Lipschitz conductivity

In this paper, we would like to derive three-ball inequalities and propagation of smallness for the complex second order elliptic equation with discontinuous Lipschitz coefficients. As an application of such estimates, we study the size estimate problem by one pair of Cauchy data on the boundary. The main ingredient in the derivation of three-ball inequalities and propagation of smallness is a local Carleman proved in our recent paper [FVW].

A generalized Korn inequality and strong unique continuation for the Reissner-Mindlin plate system

We prove constructive estimates for elastic plates modelled by the Reissner-Mindlin theory and made by general anisotropic material. Namely, we obtain a generalized Korn inequality which allows to derive quantitative stability and global H^2 regularity for the Neumann problem. Moreover, in case of isotropic material, we derive an interior three spheres inequality with optimal exponent from which the strong unique continuation property follows.

Wave equation with Robin condition, quantitative estimates of strong unique continuation at the boundary

The main result of the present paper consists in a quantitative estimate of unique continuation at the boundary for solutions to the wave equation. Such estimate is the sharp quantitative counterpart of the following strong unique continuation property: let $u$ be a solution to the wave equation that satisfies an homogeneous Robin condition on a portion $S$ of the boundary and the restriction of $u_{\mid S}$ on $S$ is flat on a segment $\{0\}\times J$ with $0\in S$ then $u_{\mid S}$ vanishes in a neighborhood of $\{0\}\times J$.

Global stability for an inverse problem in soil-structure interaction

We consider the inverse problem of determining the Winkler subgrade reaction coefficient of a slab foundation modelled as a thin elastic plate clamped at the boundary. The plate is loaded by a concentrated force and its transversal deflection is measured at the interior points. We prove a global Hölder stability estimate under (mild) regularity assumptions on the unknown coefficient.

Stability for Quantitative Photoacoustic Tomography with well chosen illuminations

We treat the stability issue for the three dimensional inverse imaging modality called Quantitative Photoacoustic Tomography. We provide universal choices of the illuminations which enable to recover, in a Hölder stable fashion, the diffusion and absorption coefficients from the interior pressure data. With such choices of illuminations we do not need the nondegeneracy conditions commonly used in previous studies, which are difficult to be verified a-priori.

Lipschitz continuous dependence of piecewise constant Lamé coefficients from boundary data: the case of non flat interfaces

We consider the inverse problem of determining the Lamé moduli for a piecewise constant elasticity tensor ${\mathbb C}= \sum_{j} {\mathbb C}_j χ_{D_j}$, where $\{D_j\}$ is a known finite partition of the body $Ω$, from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We prove that Lipschitz stability estimates can be derived under $C^{1,α}$ regularity assumptions on the interfaces.

Quantitative estimates of strong unique continuation for anisotropic wave equations

The main results of the present paper consist in some quantitative estimates for solutions to the wave equation $\partial^2_{t}u-\mbox{div}\left(A(x)\nabla_x u\right)=0$. Such estimates imply the following strong unique continuation properties: (a) if $u$ is a solution to the the wave equation and $u$ is flat on a segment $\{x_0\}\times J$ on the $t$ axis, then $u$ vanishes in a neighborhood of $\{x_0\}\times J$. (b) Let u be a solution of the above wave equation in $Ω\times J$ that vanishes on a a portion $Z\times J$ where $Z$ is a portion of $\partialΩ$ and $u$ is flat on a segment $\{x_0\}\times J$, $x_0\in Z$, then $u$ vanishes in a neighborhood of $\{x_0\}\times J$. The property (a) has been proved by G. Lebeau, Comm. Part. Diff. Equat. 24 (1999), 777-783.

Uniqueness and Lipschitz stability of an inverse boundary value problem for time-harmonic elastic waves

We consider the inverse problem of determining the Lamé parameters and the density of a three-dimensional elastic body from the local time-harmonic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We prove uniqueness and Lipschitz stability of this inverse problem when the Lamé parameters and the density are assumed to be piecewise constant on a given domain partition.

Recent results about the detection of unknown boundaries and inclusions in elastic plates

In this paper we review some recent results concerning inverse problems for thin elastic plates. The plate is assumed to be made by non-homogeneous linearly elastic material belonging to a general class of anisotropy. A first group of results concerns uniqueness and stability for the determination of unknown boundaries, including the cases of cavities and rigid inclusions. In the second group of results, we consider upper and lower estimates of the area of unknown inclusions given in terms of the work exerted by a couple field applied at the boundary of the plate. In particular, we extend previous size estimates for elastic inclusions to the case of cavities and rigid inclusions. Key words: inverse problems, elastic plates, uniqueness, stability estimates, size estimates, three sphere inequality, unique continuation.

Stable determination of surface impedance on a rough obstacle by far field data

We treat the stability of determining the boundary impedance of an obstacle by scattering data, with a single incident field. A previous result by Sincich (SIAM J. Math. Anal. 38, (2006), 434-451) showed a log stability when the boundary of the obstacle is assumed to be C^{1,1}-smooth. We prove that, when the obstacle boundary is merely Lipschitz, a log-log type stability still holds.

Estimating area of inclusions in anisotropic plates from boundary data

We consider the inverse problem of determining the possible presence of an inclusion in a thin plate by boundary measurements. The plate is made by non-homogeneous linearly elastic material belonging to a general class of anisotropy. The inclusion is made by different elastic material. Under some a priori assumptions on the unknown inclusion, we prove constructive upper and lower estimates of the area of the unknown defect in terms of an easily expressed quantity related to work, which is given in terms of measurements of a couple field applied at the boundary and of the induced transversal displacement and its normal derivative taken at the boundary of the plate.

Size estimates for the EIT problem with one measurement: the complex case

In this paper we estimate the size of a measurable inclusion in terms of power measurements for a single applied boundary current. This problem arises in medical imaging for the screening of organs. For this kind of problem one has to deal mathematically with the complex conductivity (admittivity) equation. In this case we are able to establish, for certain classes of admittivities, lower and upper bounds of the measure of the inclusion in terms of the power measurements. A novelty of our result is that we are able to estimate also the volume of inclusions having part of its boundary in common with the reference body. Our analysis is based on the derivation of energy bounds and of fine quantitative estimates of unique continuation for solutions to elliptic equations.

Stable determination of a rigid inclusion in an anisotropic elastic plate

In this paper we consider the inverse problem of determining a rigid inclusion inside a thin plate by applying a couple field at the boundary and by measuring the induced transversal displacement and its normal derivative at the boundary of the plate. The plate is made by non-homogeneous linearly elastic material belonging to a general class of anisotropy. For this severely ill-posed problem, under suitable a priori regularity assumptions on the boundary of the inclusion, we prove a stability estimate of log-log type.

Sharp three sphere inequality for perturbations of a product of two second order elliptic operators and stability for the Cauchy problem for the anisotropic plate equation

We prove a sharp three sphere inequality for solutions to third order perturbations of a product of two second order elliptic operators with real coefficients. Then we derive various kinds of quantitative estimates of unique continuation for the anisotropic plate equation. Among these, we prove a stability estimate for the Cauchy problem for such an equation and we illustrate some applications to the size estimates of an unknown inclusion made of different material that might be present in the plate. The paper is self-contained and the Carleman estimate, from which the sharp three sphere inequality is derived, is proved in an elementary and direct way based on standard integration by parts.

The stability for the Cauchy problem for elliptic equations

We discuss the ill-posed Cauchy problem for elliptic equations, which is pervasive in inverse boundary value problems modeled by elliptic equations. We provide essentially optimal stability results, in wide generality and under substantially minimal assumptions. As a general scheme in our arguments, we show that all such stability results can be derived by the use of a single building brick, the three-spheres inequality.
