Low-temperature thermodynamics of the two-leg ladder Ising model with trimer rungs: A mystery explained

Recently, a surprising low-temperature behavior has been revealed in a two-leg ladder Ising model with trimer rungs (Weiguo Yin, arXiv:2006.08921). Motivated by these findings, we study this model from another perspective and demonstrate that the reported observations are related to a critical phenomenon in the standard Ising chain. We also discuss a related curiosity, namely, the emergence of a power-law behavior characterized by quasicritical exponents.

Magnetic behavior of a ferro-ferrimagnetic ternary alloy AB$_ρ$C$_{1-ρ}$ with a selective site disorder: the case study of a mixed-spin Ising model on a honeycomb lattice

Phase transitions, compensation phenomenon and magnetization of a ferro-ferrimagnetic ternary alloy AB$_ρ$C$_{1-ρ}$ composed of three different kinds of magnetic ions A, B and C with the spin magnitude 1/2, 1 and 3/2 are examined within the framework of a mixed-spin Ising model on a honeycomb lattice with a selective annealed site disorder on one of its two sublattices. It is supposed that the first sublattice of a bipartite honeycomb lattice is formed by the spin-1/2 magnetic ions, while the sites of the second sublattice are randomly occupied either by the spin-1 magnetic ions with a probability $ρ$ or the spin-3/2 magnetic ions with a probability $1-ρ$, both being subject to a uniaxial single-ion anisotropy. The model under investigation can be exactly mapped into an effective spin-1/2 Ising model on a triangular lattice through the generalized star-triangle transformation. For a specific concentration of the spin-1 (spin-3/2) magnetic ions, it is shown that the ferro-ferrimagnetic version of the studied model may display a compensation temperature at which the total magnetization vanishes below a critical temperature. The critical temperature strikingly may also become independent of the concentration of the randomly mixed spin-1 and spin-3/2 magnetic ions for a specific value of a uniaxial single-ion anisotropy. The spontaneous magnetic order may be notably restored at finite temperatures through the order-by-disorder mechanism above a disordered ground state, which results in an anomalous temperature dependence of the total magnetization with double reentrant phase transitions.

Absence of a spontaneous long-range order in a mixed spin-(1/2, 3/2) Ising model on a decorated square lattice due to anomalous spin frustration driven by a magnetoelastic coupling

The mixed spin-(1/2, 3/2) Ising model on a decorated square lattice, which takes into account lattice vibrations of the spin-3/2 decorating magnetic ions at a quantum-mechanical level under the assumption of a perfect lattice rigidity of the spin-1/2 nodal magnetic ions, is examined via an exact mapping correspondence with the effective spin-1/2 Ising model on a square lattice. Although the considered magnetic structure is in principle unfrustrated due to bipartite nature of a decorated square lattice, the model under investigation may display anomalous spin frustration driven by a magnetoelastic coupling. It turns out that the magnetoelastic coupling is a primary cause for existence of the frustrated antiferromagnetic phases, which exhibit a peculiar coexistence of antiferromagnetic long-range order of the nodal spins with a partial disorder of the decorating spins with possible reentrant critical behaviour. Under certain conditions, the anomalous spin frustration caused by the magnetoelastic coupling is responsible for unprecedented absence of spontaneous long-range order in the mixed-spin Ising model composed from half-odd-integer spins only.

Spin-phonon coupling induced frustration in the exactly solved spin-1/2 Ising model on a decorated planar lattice

The spin-1/2 Ising model with a spin-phonon coupling on decorated planar lattices partially amenable to lattice vibrations is examined within the framework of the generalized decoration-iteration transformation and the harmonic approximation. It is shown that the magnetoelastic coupling gives rise to an effective antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbour interaction, which competes with the nearest-neighbour interaction and is responsible for a frustration of the decorating spins. The strong enough spin-phonon coupling consequently leads to an appearance of the striking partially ordered and partially disordered phase, where a perfect antiferromagnetic alignment of the nodal spins is accompanied with a complete disorder of the decorating spins. The diversity in temperature dependences of the total specific heat is investigated in connection with the particular behaviour of its magnetic and lattice contribution.
