Thermal entanglement of a geometrically frustrated spin-1 Heisenberg diamond cluster

Thermal entanglement of a geometrically frustrated spin-1 Heisenberg diamond cluster is examined within the framework of the exact diagonalization method by computing the measure of entanglement negativity. The calculated exact analytical results are applied in order to obtain theoretical prediction of the robustness of bipartite thermal entanglement of the tetranuclear nickel complex [Ni4(CO3)2(aetpy)8](ClO4)4 (aetpy = 2-aminoethyl-pyridine) against rising temperature and magnetic field.

Towards lattice-gas description of low-temperature properties above the Haldane and cluster-based Haldane ground states of a mixed spin-(1,1/2) Heisenberg octahedral chain

The rich ground-state phase diagram of the mixed spin-(1,1/2) Heisenberg octahedral chain was previously elaborated from effective mixed-spin Heisenberg chains, which were derived by employing a local conservation of a total spin on square plaquettes of an octahedral chain. Here we present a comprehensive analysis of the thermodynamic properties of this model. In the highly frustrated parameter region the lowest-energy eigenstates of the mixed-spin Heisenberg octahedral chain belong to flat bands, which allow a precise description of low-temperature magnetic properties within the localized-magnon approach exploiting a classical lattice-gas model of hard-core monomers. The present article provides a more comprehensive version of the localized-magnon approach, which extends the range of its validity down to a less frustrated parameter region involving the Haldane and cluster-based Haldane ground states. A comparison between results of the developed localized-magnon theory and accurate numerical methods such as full exact diagonalization and finite-temperature Lanczos technique convincingly evidence that the low-temperature magnetic properties above the Haldane and the cluster-based Haldane ground states can be extracted from a classical lattice-gas model of hard-core monomers and dimers, which is additionally supplemented by a hard-core particle spanned over the whole lattice representing the gapped Haldane phase.

Anomalous thermodynamic response in the vicinity of pseudo-transition of a spin-1/2 Ising diamond chain

The spin-1/2 Ising diamond chain in a magnetic field displays a remarkable pseudo-transition whenever it is driven sufficiently close to a ground-state phase boundary between a classical ferrimagnetic phase and a highly degenerate frustrated phase. The pseudo-transition of the spin-1/2 Ising diamond chain relates to intense thermal excitations from a nondegenerate ferrimagnetic ground state to a highly degenerate manifold of excited states with a frustrated character, which are responsible for an anomalous behavior of thermodynamic quantities. Temperature dependences of entropy and specific heat are indeed reminiscent of a temperature-driven phase transition of a discontinuous (entropy) or continuous (specific heat) nature though there are no true singularities of these thermodynamic quantities at a pseudo-critical temperature.

Pseudo-critical behavior of spin-1/2 Ising diamond and tetrahedral chains

A few paradigmatic one-dimensional lattice-statistical spin models have recently attracted a vigorous scientific interest owing to their peculiar thermodynamic behavior, which is highly reminiscent of a temperature-driven phase transition. The pseudotransitions of one-dimensional lattice-statistical spin models differ from actual phase transitions in several important aspects: the first-order derivatives of the Gibbs free energy such as entropy or magnetization exhibit near a pseudo-transition an abrupt continuous change instead of a true discontinuity, whereas the second-order derivatives of the Gibbs free energy such as specific heat or susceptibility display near a pseudo-transition a vigorous finite peak instead of an actual power-law divergence. In the present chapter we will comprehensively examine a pseudo-critical behavior of the spin-1/2 Ising diamond and tetrahedral chains by a detailed examination of basic magnetothermodynamic quantities such as the entropy, specific heat and susceptibility. It will be demonstrated that density plots of these magnetothermodynamic quantities provide a useful tool for establishing a finite-temperature diagram, which clearly delimits boundaries between individual quasi-phases in spite of a lack of true spontaneous long-range order at any nonzero temperature. It is suggested that a substantial difference between the degeneracies of two ground states of the spin-1/2 Ising diamond and tetrahedral chains is an essential prerequisite for observation of a relevant pseudo-critical behavior in a close vicinity of their ground-state phase boundary.

Unsaturated bipartite entanglement of a spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on a triangulated Husimi lattice

A bipartite entanglement between two nearest-neighbor Heisenberg spins of a spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on a triangulated Husimi lattice is quantified using a concurrence. It is shown that the concurrence equals zero in a classical ferromagnetic and a quantum disordered phase, while it becomes sizable though unsaturated in a quantum ferromagnetic phase. A thermally-assisted reentrance of the concurrence is found above a classical ferromagnetic phase, whereas a quantum ferromagnetic phase displays a striking cusp of the concurrence at a critical temperature.

Absence of a spontaneous long-range order in a mixed spin-(1/2, 3/2) Ising model on a decorated square lattice due to anomalous spin frustration driven by a magnetoelastic coupling

The mixed spin-(1/2, 3/2) Ising model on a decorated square lattice, which takes into account lattice vibrations of the spin-3/2 decorating magnetic ions at a quantum-mechanical level under the assumption of a perfect lattice rigidity of the spin-1/2 nodal magnetic ions, is examined via an exact mapping correspondence with the effective spin-1/2 Ising model on a square lattice. Although the considered magnetic structure is in principle unfrustrated due to bipartite nature of a decorated square lattice, the model under investigation may display anomalous spin frustration driven by a magnetoelastic coupling. It turns out that the magnetoelastic coupling is a primary cause for existence of the frustrated antiferromagnetic phases, which exhibit a peculiar coexistence of antiferromagnetic long-range order of the nodal spins with a partial disorder of the decorating spins with possible reentrant critical behaviour. Under certain conditions, the anomalous spin frustration caused by the magnetoelastic coupling is responsible for unprecedented absence of spontaneous long-range order in the mixed-spin Ising model composed from half-odd-integer spins only.

Cluster-based Haldane phases, bound magnon crystals and quantum spin liquids of a mixed spin-1 and spin-1/2 Heisenberg octahedral chain

The mixed spin-1 and spin-1/2 Heisenberg octahedral chain with regularly alternating monomeric spin-1 sites and square-plaquette spin-1/2 sites is investigated using variational technique, localized-magnon approach, exact diagonalization (ED) and density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. The investigated model has in a magnetic field an extraordinarily rich ground-state phase diagram, which includes the uniform and cluster-based Haldane phases, two ferrimagnetic phases of Lieb-Mattis type, two quantum spin liquids and two bound magnon crystals in addition to the fully polarized ferromagnetic phase. The lowest-energy eigenstates in a highly-frustrated parameter region belong to flat bands and hence, low-temperature thermodynamics above the bound magnon-crystal ground states can be satisfactorily described within the localized-magnon approach. The variational method provides an exact evidence for the magnon-crystal phase with a character of the monomer-tetramer ground state at zero field, while another magnon-crystal phase with a single bound magnon at each square plaquette is found in a high-field region. A diversity of quantum ground states gives rise to manifold zero-temperature magnetization curves, which may involve up to four wide intermediate plateaus at zero, one-sixth, one-third and two-thirds of the saturation magnetization, two quantum spin-liquid regions and two tiny plateaus at one-ninth and one-twelfth of the saturation magnetization corresponding to the fragmentized cluster-based Haldane phases.

Doping-dependent magnetization plateaus of a coupled spin-electron chain: exact results

A coupled spin-electron chain composed of localized Ising spins and mobile electrons is exactly solved in an external magnetic field within the transfer-matrix method. The ground-state phase diagram involves in total seven different ground states, which differ in the number of mobile electrons per unit cell and the respective spin arrangements. A rigorous analysis of the low-temperature magnetization process reveals doping-dependent magnetization plateaus, which may be tuned through the density of mobile electrons. It is demonstrated that the fractional value of the electron density is responsible for an enhanced magnetocaloric effect due to an annealed bond disorder of the mobile electrons.

Exactly solved mixed spin-(1,1/2) Ising-Heisenberg distorted diamond chain

The mixed spin-(1,1/2) Ising-Heisenberg model on a distorted diamond chain with the spin-1 nodal atoms and the spin-1/2 interstitial atoms is exactly solved by the transfer-matrix method. An influence of the geometric spin frustration and the parallelogram distortion on the ground state, magnetization, susceptibility and specific heat of the mixed-spin Ising-Heisenberg distorted diamond chain are investigated in detail. It is demonstrated that the zero-temperature magnetization curve may involve intermediate plateaus just at zero and one-half of the saturation magnetization. The temperature dependence of the specific heat may have up to three distinct peaks at zero magnetic field and up to four distinct peaks at a non-zero magnetic field. The origin of multipeak thermal behavior of the specific heat is comprehensively studied.

Fractional magnetization plateaux of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg orthogonal-dimer chain revisited: strong-coupling approach developed from the exactly solved Ising-Heisenberg model

The spin-1/2 Heisenberg orthogonal-dimer chain is considered within the perturbative strong-coupling approach, which is developed from the exactly solved spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg orthogonal-dimer chain with the Heisenberg intradimer and the Ising interdimer couplings. Although the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg orthogonal-dimer chain exhibits just intermediate plateaux at zero, one-quarter and one-half of the saturation magnetization, the perturbative treatment up to second order stemming from this exactly solvable model additionally corroborates the fractional one-third plateau as well as the gapless Luttinger spin-liquid phase. It is evidenced that the approximate results obtained from the strong-coupling approach are in an excellent agreement with the state-of-the-art numerical data obtained for the spin-1/2 Heisenberg orthogonal-dimer chain within the exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group method. The nature of individual quantum ground states is comprehensively studied within the developed perturbation theory.

The Schottky-type specific heat as an indicator of relative degeneracy between ground and first-excited states: the case study of regular Ising polyhedra

The specific heat of regular Ising polyhedra is investigated in detail as a function of temperature and magnetic field. It is shown that the regular Ising polyhedra display diverse double-peak temperature dependences of the specific heat whenever the magnetic field approaches a level-crossing field. The Schottky theory of a two-level system often provides a plausible explanation of a height and position of low-temperature peak, which emerges in the specific heat of a regular Ising polyhedron due to low-lying excitations from a ground state to a first-excited state. The height and position of Schottky-type maximum depends essentially on a relative degeneracy of the ground state and first-excited state, which are in general quite distinct in geometrically frustrated Ising spin clusters. Low-temperature variations of the specific heat with the magnetic field exhibit multipeak structure with two peaks (of generally different height) symmetrically placed around each level-crossing field.

A brief account of the Ising and Ising-like models: Mean-field, effective-field and exact results

The article provides a tutorial review on how to treat Ising models within mean-field (MF), effective-field (EF) and exact methods. MF solutions of the spin-1 Blume-Capel (BC) model and the mixed-spin Ising model demonstrate a change of continuous phase transitions to discontinuous ones at a tricritical point. A quantum phase transition of the spin-S Ising model driven by a transverse field is explored within MF method. EF theory is elaborated within a single- and two-spin cluster approach to demonstrate an efficiency of this approximate method. The long-standing problem of this method concerned with a self-consistent determination of the free energy is addressed. EF theory is adapted for the spin-1/2 Ising model, the spin-S BC model and the transverse Ising model. The particular attention is paid to continuous and discontinuous transitions. Exact results for the spin-1/2 Ising chain, spin-1 BC chain and mixed-spin Ising chain are obtained using the transfer-matrix method, the crucial steps of which are reviewed for a spin-1/2 Ising square lattice. Critical points of the spin-1/2 Ising model on several lattices are rigorously obtained with the help of dual, star-triangle and decoration-iteration transformations. Mapping transformations are adapted to obtain exact results for the mixed-spin Ising model on planar lattices. An increase in the coordination number of the mixed-spin Ising model on decorated planar lattices gives rise to reentrant transitions, while the critical temperature of the mixed-spin Ising model on a regular honeycomb lattice is always greater than that of two semi-regular archimedean lattices. The effect of selective site dilution of the mixed-spin Ising model on a honeycomb lattice upon phase diagrams is examined. The review affords a brief account of the Ising models solved within MF, EF and exact methods along with a few comments on their future applicability.

Effective low-energy description of almost Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain

We consider a geometrically frustrated spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain, which is an exactly solvable model when assuming part of the exchange interactions as Heisenberg ones and another part as Ising ones. A small $XY$ part is afterwards perturbatively added to the Ising couplings, which enabled us to derive an effective Hamiltonian describing the low-energy behavior of the modified but full quantum version of the initial model. The effective model is much simpler and free of frustration. It is shown that the $XY$ part added to the originally Ising interaction gives rise to the spin-liquid phase with continuously varying magnetization, which emerges in between the magnetization plateaus and is totally absent in the initial hybrid diamond-chain model. The elaborated approach can also be applied to other hybrid Ising-Heisenberg spin systems.

Exactly solvable spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain with the second-neighbor interaction between nodal spins

The spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain with the second-neighbor interaction between the nodal spins is rigorously solved using the transfer-matrix method. Exact results for the ground state, magnetization process and specific heat are presented and discussed in particular. It is shown that the further-neighbor interaction between the nodal spins gives rise to three novel ground states with a translationally broken symmetry, but at the same time, it does not increases the total number of intermediate plateaus in a zero-temperature magnetization curve compared with the simplified model without this interaction term. The zero-field specific heat displays interesting thermal dependencies with a single- or double-peak structure.

Giant magnetocaloric effect, magnetization plateaux and jumps of the regular Ising polyhedra

Magnetization process and adiabatic demagnetization of the antiferromagnetic Ising spin clusters with the shape of regular polyhedra (Platonic solids) are exactly examined within the framework of a simple graph-theoretical approach. While the Ising cube as the only unfrustrated (bipartite) spin cluster shows just one trivial plateau at zero magnetization, the other regular Ising polyhedra (tetrahedron, octahedron, icosahedron and dodecahedron) additionally display either one or two intermediate plateaux at fractional values of the saturation magnetization. The nature of highly degenerate ground states emergent at intermediate plateaux owing to a geometric frustration is clarified. It is evidenced that the regular Ising polyhedra exhibit a giant magnetocaloric effect in a vicinity of magnetization jumps, whereas the Ising octahedron and dodecahedron belong to the most prominent geometrically frustrated spin clusters that enable an efficient low-temperature refrigeration by the process of adiabatic demagnetization.

Magnetic Gruneisen parameter and magnetocaloric properties of a coupled spin-electron double-tetrahedral chain

Magnetocaloric effect in a double-tetrahedral chain, in which nodal lattice sites occupied by the localized Ising spins regularly alternate with three equivalent lattice sites available for mobile electrons, is exactly investigated by considering the one-third electron filling and the ferromagnetic Ising exchange interaction between the mobile electrons and their nearest Ising neighbours. The entropy and the magnetic Gruneisen parameter, which closely relate to the magnetocaloric effect, are exactly calculated in order to investigate the relation between the ground-state degeneracy and the cooling efficiency of the hybrid spin-electron system during the adiabatic demagnetization.

On the absence of actual plateaus in zero-temperature magnetization curves of quantum spin clusters and chains

We examine the general features of the non-commutativity of the magnetization operator and Hamiltonian for the small quantum spin clusters. The source of this non-commutativity can be a difference in the Landé g-factors for different spins in the cluster, XY-anisotropy in the exchange interaction and the presence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya term in the direction different for the direction of the magnetic field. As a result, a zero-temperature magnetization curve for the small spin clusters mimics that for the macroscopic systems with the band(s) of magnetic excitations, i.e. for the given eigenstate of the spin cluster the corresponding magnetic moment can be an explicit function of the external magnetic field yielding the non-constant (non-plateau) form of the magnetization curve within the given eigenstate. Also, the XY-anisotropy makes the saturated magnetization (the eigenstate when all spins in cluster are aligned along the magnetic field) inaccessible for finite magnetic field magnitude (asymptotical saturation). We demonstrate all these features on three examples: spin-1/2 dimer, mixed spin-(1/2,1) dimer, spin-1/2 ring trimer. We consider the simplest Ising-Heisenberg chain, the XYZ-Ising diamond chain with four different g-factors as well. In the chain model the magnetization curve has more complicated and non trivial structure with than that for clusters.

Spin frustration of a spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg three-leg tube as an indispensable ground for thermal entanglement

The spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg three-leg tube composed of the Heisenberg spin triangles mutually coupled through the Ising inter-triangle interaction is exactly solved in a zero magnetic field. By making use of the local conservation for the total spin on each Heisenberg spin triangle the model can be rigorously mapped onto a classical composite spin-chain model, which is subsequently exactly treated through the transfer-matrix method. The ground-state phase diagram, correlation functions, concurrence, Bell function, entropy and specific heat are examined in detail. It is shown that the spin frustration represents an indispensable ground for a thermal entanglement, which is quantified with the help of concurrence. The specific heat displays diverse temperature dependences, which may include a sharp low-temperature peak mimicking a temperature-driven first-order phase transition. It is convincingly evidenced that this anomalous peak originates from massive thermal excitations from the doubly degenerate ground state towards an excited state with a high macroscopic degeneracy due to chiral degrees of freedom of the Heisenberg spin triangles.

Vigorous thermal excitations in a double-tetrahedral chain of localized Ising spins and mobile electrons mimic a temperature-driven first-order phase transition

A hybrid spin-electron system defined on one-dimensional double-tetrahedral chain, in which the localized Ising spin regularly alternates with two mobile electrons delocalized over a triangular plaquette, is exactly solved with the help of generalized decoration-iteration transformation. It is shown that a macroscopic degeneracy of ferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic ground states arising from chiral degrees of freedom of the mobile electrons cannot be lifted by a magnetic field in contrast to a macroscopic degeneracy of the frustrated ground state, which appears owing to a kinetically-driven frustration of the localized Ising spins. An anomalous behavior of all basic thermodynamic quantities can be observed on account of massive thermal excitations, which mimic a temperature-driven first-order phase transition from the non-degenerate frustrated state to the highly degenerate ferrimagnetic state at non-zero magnetic fields. A substantial difference in the respective degeneracies is responsible for an immense low-temperature peak of the specific heat and very abrupt (almost discontinuous) thermal variations of the entropy and sublattice magnetizations.

Exact ground states of a spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice in a magnetic field

Exact ground states of a spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice with Heisenberg intra-dimer and Ising inter-dimer couplings are found by two independent rigorous procedures. The first method uses a unitary transformation to establish a mapping correspondence with an effective classical spin model, while the second method relies on the derivation of an effective hard-core boson model by continuous unitary transformations. Both methods lead to equivalent effective Hamiltonians providing a convincing proof that the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice exhibits a zero-temperature magnetization curve with just two intermediate plateaus at one-third and one-half of the saturation magnetization, which correspond to stripe and checkerboard orderings of singlets and polarized triplets, respectively. The nature of the remarkable stripe order relevant to the one-third plateau is thoroughly investigated with the help of the corresponding exact eigenvector. The rigorous results for the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice are compared with the analogous results for the purely classical Ising and fully quantum Heisenberg models. Finally, we discuss to what extent the critical fields of SrCu2(BO3)2 and (CuCl)Ca2Nb3O10 can be described within the suggested Ising-Heisenberg model.

Magnetization plateaus of an exactly solvable spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain

The spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain in a magnetic field is exactly solved by a rigorous treatment based on the transfer-matrix method. An exact ground-state phase diagram includes in total three unconventional quantum ground states with a quantum entanglement of the decorating spin-1 Heisenberg dimers apart from two ground states with a classical spin arrangement. It is evidenced that all three values of the magnetization allowed for the spin-1 diamond chain without translationally broken symmetry by the Oshikawa-Yamanaka-Affleck criterion can become evident in an outstanding stepwise magnetization curve with three intermediate plateaus at zero, one-third, and two-thirds of the saturation magnetization.

Magnetization process, bipartite entanglement and enhanced magnetocaloric effect of the exactly solved spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg tetrahedral chain

The frustrated spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg ladder with Heisenberg intra-rung and Ising inter-rung interactions is exactly solved in a longitudinal magnetic field by taking advantage of the local conservation of the total spin on each rung and the transfer-matrix method. We have rigorously calculated the ground-state phase diagram, magnetization process, magnetocaloric effect and basic thermodynamic quantities for the model, which can be alternatively viewed as an Ising-Heisenberg tetrahedral chain. It is demonstrated that a stepwise magnetization curve with an intermediate plateau at a half of the saturation magnetization is also reflected in respective stepwise changes of the concurrence serving as a measure of bipartite entanglement. The ground-state phase diagram and zero-temperature magnetization curves of the Ising-Heisenberg tetrahedral chain are contrasted with the analogous results of the purely quantum Heisenberg tetrahedral chain, which have been obtained through density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations. While both ground-state phase diagrams fully coincide in the regime of weak inter-rung interaction, the purely quantum Heisenberg tetrahedral chain develops Luttinger spin-liquid and Haldane phases for strongly coupled rungs which are absent in the Ising-Heisenberg counterpart model.

Exact results for a generalized spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain with the second-neighbor interaction between nodal spins

The ground state and thermodynamics of a generalized spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain with the second-neighbor interaction between nodal spins are calculated exactly using the mapping method based on the decoration-iteration transformation. Rigorous results for the magnetization, susceptibility, and heat capacity are investigated in dependence on temperature and magnetic field for the frustrated diamond spin chain with the antiferromagnetic Ising and Heisenberg interactions. It is demonstrated that the second-neighbor interaction between nodal spins gives rise to a greater diversity of low-temperature magnetization curves, which may include an intermediate plateau at two-third of the saturation magnetization related to the classical ferrimagnetic (up-up-up-down-up-up-...) ground state with translationally broken symmetry besides an intermediate one-third magnetization plateau reflecting the translationally invariant quantum ferrimagnetic (monomer-dimer) spin arrangement.

Exact solution for quantum spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg orthogonal-dimer chain with the Heisenberg intra-dimer and Ising inter-dimer interactions

The quantum spin-1/2 orthogonal-dimer chain with the Heisenberg intra-dimer and Ising inter-dimer interactions in a magnetic field is considered by a rigorous approach. The model conserves the z-component of total spin on vertical Heisenberg bonds and this property is used to calculate exactly the partition function using the transfer-matrix method. We have found the ground-state phase diagram of the given model in a magnetic field as well as the macroscopic degeneracy along field-induced transitions accompanied with the magnetization jumps. The model exhibits two intermediate fractional plateaux at one-quarter and one-half of the saturation magnetization. We have examined the effect of the exchange anisotropy in the XXZ Heisenberg intra-dimer interaction on the ground state. It is shown that the one-quarter and one-half plateaux may disappear from the magnetization curve for the ferromagnetic Heisenberg intra-dimer interaction. We have also rigorously studied the effect of frustrated interactions on the thermodynamic and magnetic properties of the model and show how the macroscopic degeneracy of the ground state is reflected in the low-temperature behavior of the magnetization, entropy and specific heat. A possibility of observing enhanced magnetocaloric effect during the adiabatic demagnetization is discussed in detail.

Ground-state phase diagram and magnetization process of the exactly solved mixed spin-(1,1/2) Ising diamond chain

The ground state and magnetization process of the mixed spin-(1,1/2) Ising diamond chain is exactly solved by employing the generalized decoration-iteration mapping transformation and the transfer-matrix method. The decoration-iteration transformation is first used in order to establish a rigorous mapping equivalence with the corresponding spin-1 Blume-Emery-Griffiths chain in a non-zero magnetic field, which is subsequently exactly treated within the framework of the transfer-matrix technique. It is shown that the ground-state phase diagram includes just four different ground states and the low-temperature magnetization curve may exhibit an intermediate plateau precisely at one half of the saturation magnetization. Our rigorous results disprove recent Monte Carlo simulations of Zihua Xin et al. [Z. Xin, S. Chen, C. Zhang, J. Magn. Magn. Mater. 324 (2012) 3704], which imply an existence of the other magnetization plateaus at 0.283 and 0.426 of the saturation magnetization.

Intermediate magnetization plateaus in the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg and Heisenberg models on two-dimensional triangulated lattices

The ground state and zero-temperature magnetization process of the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on two-dimensional triangles-in-triangles lattices is exactly calculated using eigenstates of the smallest commuting spin clusters. Our ground-state analysis of the investigated classical--quantum spin model reveals three unconventional dimerized or trimerized quantum ground states besides two classical ground states. It is demonstrated that the spin frustration is responsible for a variety of magnetization scenarios with up to three or four intermediate magnetization plateaus of either quantum or classical nature. The exact analytical results for the Ising-Heisenberg model are confronted with the corresponding results for the purely quantum Heisenberg model, which were obtained by numerical exact diagonalizations based on the Lanczos algorithm for finite-size spin clusters of 24 and 21 sites, respectively. It is shown that the zero-temperature magnetization process of both models is quite reminiscent and hence, one may obtain some insight into the ground states of the quantum Heisenberg model from the rigorous results for the Ising-Heisenberg model even though exact ground states for the Ising-Heisenberg model do not represent true ground states for the pure quantum Heisenberg model.

Interplay between spin frustration and thermal entanglement in the exactly solved Ising-Heisenberg tetrahedral chain

The spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg tetrahedral chain is exactly solved using its local gauge symmetry, which enables one to establish a rigorous mapping with the corresponding chain of composite Ising spins tractable within the transfer-matrix approach. Exact results derived for spin-spin correlation functions are employed to obtain the frustration temperature, at which a product of correlation functions along an elementary triangular plaquette becomes negative and the relevant spins experience a spin frustration. In addition, we have exactly calculated a concurrence quantifying thermal entanglement along with a threshold temperature, above which concurrence as a measure of thermal entanglement vanishes. It is shown that the frustration and threshold temperature coincide at sufficiently low temperatures, while they exhibit a very different behavior in the high-temperature region when tending towards completely different asymptotic limits. The threshold temperature additionally shows a notable reentrant behavior when it extends over a narrow temperature region above the classical ground state without any quantum correlations. It is demonstrated that the specific heat may display temperature dependence with or without an anomalous low-temperature peak for a relatively strong or weak Heisenberg interaction, respectively.

Order-from-disorder effect in the exactly solved mixed spin-(1/2, 1) Ising model on fully frustrated triangles-in-triangles lattices

The mixed spin-(1/2, 1) Ising model on two fully frustrated triangles-in-triangles lattices is exactly solved with the help of the generalized star-triangle transformation, which establishes a rigorous mapping correspondence with the equivalent spin-1/2 Ising model on a triangular lattice. It is shown that the mutual interplay between the spin frustration and single-ion anisotropy gives rise to various spontaneously ordered and disordered ground states, which differ mainly in an occurrence probability of the non-magnetic spin state of the integer-valued decorating spins. We have convincingly evidenced a possible coexistence of the spontaneous long-range order with a partial disorder within the striking ordered-disordered ground state, which manifest itself through a non-trivial criticality at finite temperatures as well. A rather rich critical behaviour including the order-from-disorder effect and reentrant phase transitions with either two or three successive critical points is also found.

Unconventional quantum ordered and disordered states in the highly frustrated spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on triangles-in-triangles lattices

Ground state and thermodynamics of geometrically frustrated spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on two different but topologically related triangles-in-triangles lattices is investigated in particular. A rigorous mapping based on generalized star-triangle transformations enables one to derive exact analytical results for the free and internal energy, spontaneous magnetization, entropy and specific heat from the known exact results for the corresponding spin-1/2 Ising model on a triangular lattice. It is demonstrated that several unconventional quantum ordered and disordered phases may become the ground state in addition to the classical ferromagnetic phase with a perfect alignment of all constituent spins. A mutual competition between the ferromagnetic Ising and XXZ Heisenberg interactions may lead to an appearance of a peculiar quantum ferromagnetic phase, in which the magnetic moment of the Heisenberg spins undergoes a quantum reduction to one third of the saturation value in contrast with the fully saturated magnetic moment of the classical Ising spins. In the highly frustrated regime, we have found either the disordered quantum paramagnetic phase with the substantial residual entropy or a similar but strikingly spontaneously long-range ordered phase, in which a quantum reduction of the magnetic moment of the Heisenberg spins causes a small quantum reduction of the magnetic moment of otherwise purely classical Ising spins. It is evidenced that the specific heat exhibits diverse thermal dependences with or without a logarithmic divergence superimposed either on one or two round Schottky-type maxima.

On the compressibility of deformable spin chains in a vicinity of quantum critical points

We calculate the ground-state compressibility of a deformable spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Ising chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction to discuss how a quantum critical point inherent in this spin system may manifest itself in the elastic properties of the underlying lattice. We compare these results with the corresponding ones for the spin-1/2 Ising chain in a longitudinal or transverse field and the spin-1/2 $XX$ chain in a transverse field. The inverse compressibility of the spin-1/2 $XX$ chain in a transverse field exhibits a hysteresis in a vicinity of quantum critical point that is accompanied with the finite jump of compressibility. Contrary to this, the inverse compressibility diminishes continuously close to a quantum critical point of the spin-1/2 Ising chain in a transverse field and the spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Ising bond alternating chain.

Quantum phase transitions in the exactly solved spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Ising ladder

Ground-state behaviour of the frustrated quantum spin-1/2 two-leg ladder with the Heisenberg intra-rung and Ising inter-rung interactions is examined in detail. The investigated model is transformed to the quantum Ising chain with composite spins in an effective transverse and longitudinal field by employing either the bond-state representation or the unitary transformation. It is shown that the ground state of the Heisenberg-Ising ladder can be descended from three exactly solvable models: the quantum Ising chain in a transverse field, the 'classical' Ising chain in a longitudinal field or the spin-chain model in a staggered longitudinal-transverse field. The last model serves in evidence of the staggered bond phase with alternating singlet and triplet bonds on the rungs of two-leg ladder, which appears at moderate values of the external magnetic field and consequently leads to a fractional plateau at a half of the saturation magnetization. The ground-state phase diagram totally consists of five ordered and one quantum disordered phase, which are separated from each other either by the lines of discontinuous or continuous quantum phase transitions. The order parameters are exactly calculated for all five ordered phases and the quantum disordered phase is characterized through different short-range spin-spin correlations.

Reentrant phase transitions and multicompensation points in the mixed-spin Ising ferrimagnet on a decorated Bethe lattice

Mixed-spin Ising model on a decorated Bethe lattice is rigorously solved by combining the decoration-iteration transformation with the method of exact recursion relations. Exact results for critical lines, compensation temperatures, total and sublattice magnetizations are obtained from a precise mapping relationship with the corresponding spin-1/2 Ising model on a simple (undecorated) Bethe lattice. The effect of next-nearest-neighbour interaction and single-ion anisotropy on magnetic properties of the ferrimagnetic model is investigated in particular. It is shown that the total magnetization may exhibit multicompensation phenomenon and the critical temperature vs. the single-ion anisotropy dependence basically changes with the coordination number of the underlying Bethe lattice. The possibility of observing reentrant phase transitions is related to a high enough coordination number of the underlying Bethe lattice.

Spontaneous distortion in the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on decorated planar lattices with a magnetoelastic coupling

Magnetoelastic properties of the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on doubly decorated planar lattices partially amenable to lattice vibrations are examined within the framework of the harmonic approximation and decoration-iteration transformation. It is shown that the mutual interplay between quantum spin fluctuations and local fluctuations of lattice spacings enhances typical quantum features like the quantum reduction of the magnetization in the ground state of the quantum antiferromagnetic phase, while it does not affect the ground-state behaviour of the classical ferromagnetic phase by no means. It also turns out that local fluctuations of lattice spacings are responsible for a much more pronounced reduction of the critical temperature in the quantum antiferromagnetic phase than in the classical ferromagnetic phase.

Magnetic properties of the quantum spin-1/2 XX diamond chain: The Jordan-Wigner approach

The Jordan-Wigner transformation is applied to study magnetic properties of the quantum spin-1/2 $XX$ model on the diamond chain. Generally, the Hamiltonian of this quantum spin system can be represented in terms of spinless fermions in the presence of a gauge field and different gauge-invariant ways of assigning the spin-fermion transformation are considered. Additionally, we analyze general properties of a free-fermion chain, where all gauge terms are neglected and discuss their relevance for the quantum spin system. A consideration of interaction terms in the fermionic Hamiltonian rests upon the Hartree-Fock procedure after fixing the appropriate gauge. Finally, we discuss the magnetic properties of this quantum spin model at zero as well as non-zero temperatures and analyze the validity of the approximation used through a comparison with the results of the exact diagonalization method for finite (up to 36 spins) chains. Besides the $m=1/3$ plateau the most prominent feature of the magnetization curve is a jump at intermediate field present for certain values of the frustrating vertical bond.

Spin-1/2 XXZ diamond chain within the Jordan-Wigner fermionization approach

The spin-1/2 XXZ diamond chain is considered within the Jordan-Wigner fermionization. The fermionized Hamiltonian contains the interacting terms which are treated within the Hartree-Fock approximation. We obtain the ground-state magnetization curve of the model for some particular cases and compare the results with the exact diagonalization data for finite chains of 30 spins and known exact results. We also analyze the validity of the suggested approximation.

Spin-phonon coupling induced frustration in the exactly solved spin-1/2 Ising model on a decorated planar lattice

The spin-1/2 Ising model with a spin-phonon coupling on decorated planar lattices partially amenable to lattice vibrations is examined within the framework of the generalized decoration-iteration transformation and the harmonic approximation. It is shown that the magnetoelastic coupling gives rise to an effective antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbour interaction, which competes with the nearest-neighbour interaction and is responsible for a frustration of the decorating spins. The strong enough spin-phonon coupling consequently leads to an appearance of the striking partially ordered and partially disordered phase, where a perfect antiferromagnetic alignment of the nodal spins is accompanied with a complete disorder of the decorating spins. The diversity in temperature dependences of the total specific heat is investigated in connection with the particular behaviour of its magnetic and lattice contribution.

Unusual field-induced transitions in exactly solved mixed spin-(1/2,1) Ising chain with axial and rhombic zero-field splitting parameters

The mixed spin-(1/2,1) Ising chain with axial and rhombic zero-field splitting parameters in a presence of the longitudinal magnetic field is exactly solved within the framework of decoration-iteration transformation and transfer-matrix method. Our particular emphasis is laid on an investigation of the influence of the rhombic term, which is responsible for an onset of quantum entanglement between two magnetic states S_k^z = 1 and -1 of the spin-1 atoms. It is shown that the rhombic term gradually destroys a classical ferrimagnetic order in the ground state and simultaneously causes diversity in magnetization curves including intermediate plateau regions, regions with a continuous change in the magnetization as well as several unusual field-induced transitions accompanied with magnetization jumps. Another interesting findings concern with an appearance of the round minimum in the temperature dependence of susceptibility times temperature data, the double-peak zero-field specific heat curves and the enhanced magnetocaloric effect. The temperature dependence of the specific heat with three separate maxima may also be detected when driving the system through the axial and rhombic zero-field splitting parameters close enough to a phase boundary between the ferrimagnetic and disordered states and applying sufficiently small longitudinal magnetic field.

A hybrid lattice-statistical model on doubly decorated planar lattices, which have localized Ising spins at their nodal lattice sites and two itinerant electrons at each pair of decorating sites, is exactly solved by the use of a generalized decoration-iteration transformation. Our main attention is focused on an in uence of the on-site Coulomb repulsion on ground-state properties and critical behavior of the investigated system.

On the Theory of Generalized Algebraic Transformations

This book deals with the theory of generalized algebraic transformations, which is elaborated with the aim to provide a relatively simple theoretical tool that enables an exact treatment of diverse more complex lattice-statistical models. In addition to a brief historical account on the developments of this exact mapping method, the versatility of generalized algebraic transformations will be convincingly evidenced when providing exact results for two different families of exactly solvable models. The family of exactly solved Ising models brings a deeper insight into various aspects closely associated especially with phase transitions and critical phenomena. The second class of exactly solved Ising-Heisenberg models sheds light on striking quantum manifestations of spontaneously long-range ordered systems, which are closely connected with a mutual interplay between quantum and cooperative phenomena.

Ground-state and finite-temperature phase diagrams of a geometrically frustrated spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on a triangle-hexagon lattice are investigated within the generalized star-triangle mapping transformation. It is shown that the ground state is constituted by two different spontaneously long-range ordered phases and one disordered spin-liquid phase.

The spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on diamond-like decorated Bethe lattices is exactly solved with the help of decoration-iteration transformation and exact recursion relations. It is shown that the model under investigation exhibits reentrant phase transitions whenever a sufficiently high coordination number of the underlying Bethe lattice is considered.

Exact evidence for the spontaneous antiferromagnetic long-range order in the two-dimensional hybrid model of localized Ising spins and itinerant electrons

The generalized decoration-iteration transformation is adopted to treat exactly a hybrid model of doubly decorated two-dimensional lattices, which have localized Ising spins at their nodal lattice sites and itinerant electrons delocalized over pairs of decorating sites. Under the assumption of a half filling of each couple of the decorating sites, the investigated model system exhibits a remarkable spontaneous antiferromagnetic long-range order with an obvious quantum reduction of the staggered magnetization. It is shown that the critical temperature of the spontaneously long-range ordered quantum antiferromagnet displays an outstanding non-monotonic dependence on a ratio between the kinetic term and the Ising-type exchange interaction.

Mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising model with uniaxial and biaxial single-ion anisotropy on Bethe lattice

The mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising model on the Bethe lattice with both uniaxial as well as biaxial single-ion anisotropy terms is exactly solved by combining star-triangle and triangle-star mapping transformations with exact recursion relations. Magnetic properties (magnetization, phase diagrams and compensation phenomenon) are investigated in detail. The particular attention is focused on the effect of uniaxial and biaxial single-ion anisotropies that basically influence the magnetic behavior of the spin-1 atoms.

Phase transitions in exactly solvable decorated model of localized Ising spins and itinerant electrons

A hybrid lattice-statistical model of doubly decorated two-dimensional lattices, which have localized Ising spins at its nodal sites and itinerant electrons delocalized over decorating sites, is exactly solved with the help of a generalized decoration-iteration transformation. Under the assumption of a quarter filling of each couple of the decorating sites, the ground state constitutes either spontaneously long-range ordered ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic phase in dependence on whether the ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic interaction between the localized Ising spins and itinerant electrons is considered. The critical temperature of the spontaneously long-range ordered phases monotonically increases upon strengthening the ratio between the kinetic term and the Ising-type exchange interaction.

Reentrant phenomenon in the exactly solvable mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg model on diamond-like decorated planar lattices

Ground-state and finite-temperature behaviour of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg model on decorated planar lattices consisting of inter-connected diamonds is investigated by means of the generalised decoration-iteration mapping transformation. The obtained exact results clearly point out that this model has a rather complex ground state composed of two unusual quantum phases, which is valid regardless of the lattice topology as well as the spatial dimensionality of the investigated system. It is shown that the diamond-like decorated planar lattices with a sufficiently high coordination number may exhibit a striking critical behaviour including reentrant phase transitions with two or three consecutive critical points.

Spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model with the pair XYZ Heisenberg interaction and quartic Ising interactions as the exactly soluble zero-field eight-vertex model

The spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model with the pair XYZ Heisenberg interaction and quartic Ising interactions is exactly solved by establishing a precise mapping relationship with the corresponding zero-field (symmetric) eight-vertex model. It is shown that the Ising-Heisenberg model with the ferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction exhibits a striking critical behavior, which manifests itself through re-entrant phase transitions as well as continuously varying critical exponents. The changes of critical exponents are in accordance with the weak universality hypothesis in spite of a peculiar singular behavior to emerge at a quantum critical point of the infinite order, which occurs at the isotropic limit of the Heisenberg interaction. On the other hand, the Ising-Heisenberg model with the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction surprisingly exhibits less significant changes of both critical temperatures as well as critical exponents upon varying a strength of the exchange anisotropy in the Heisenberg interaction.

Weak-universal critical behavior and quantum critical point of the exactly soluble spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model with the pair XYZ Heisenberg and quartic Ising interactions

Spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model with XYZ Heisenberg pair interaction and two different Ising quartic interactions is exactly solved with the help of the generalized star-square transformation, which establishes a precise mapping equivalence with the corresponding eight-vertex model on a square lattice generally satisfying Baxter's zero-field (symmetric) condition. The investigated model exhibits a remarkable weak-universal critical behavior with two marked wings of critical lines along which critical exponents vary continuously with the interaction parameters. Both wings of critical lines merge together at a very special quantum critical point of the infinite order, which can be characterized through diverging critical exponents. The possibility of observing reentrant phase transitions in a close vicinity of the quantum critical point is related to a relative strength of the exchange anisotropy in the XYZ Heisenberg pair interaction.

Reentrant transitions of a mixed-spin Ising model on the diced lattice

Magnetic behaviour of a mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising model on the diced lattice is studied by the use of an exact star-triangle mapping transformation. It is found that the uniaxial as well as biaxial single-ion anisotropy acting on the spin-1 sites may potentially cause a reentrant transition with two consecutive critical points. Contrary to this, the effect of next-nearest-neighbour interaction between the spin-1/2 sites possibly leads to a reentrant transition with three critical temperatures in addition to the one with two critical points only. The shape of the total magnetization versus temperature dependence is particularly investigated for the case of ferrimagnetically ordered system.

Weak universal critical behaviour of the mixed spin-(1/2, S) Ising model on the union jack (centered square) lattice: integer versus half-odd-integer spin-S case

The mixed spin-(1/2, S) Ising model on the union jack (centered square) lattice is investigated by establishing the mapping relationship with its corresponding eight-vertex model. An interplay between the nearest-neighbour interaction, the competing next-nearest-neighbour interaction and the single-ion anisotropy gives rise to a rather complex critical behaviour displayed in the reentrant phase transitions, the weak universal critical behaviour, as well as, a presence of first- and second-order phase transitions. The most interesting finding to emerge from the present study relates to a variation of the weak-universal critical exponents along the line of bicritical points, which is being twice as large for the mixed spin-(1/2, S) systems with the integer spin-S atoms as for the ones with the half-odd-integer spin-S atoms.

Weak universality, bicritical points and reentrant transitions in the critical behaviour of a mixed spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 Ising model on the union jack (centered square) lattice

The mixed spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 Ising model on the union jack lattice is solved by establishing a mapping correspondence with the eight-vertex model. It is shown that the model under investigation becomes exactly soluble as a free-fermion eight-vertex model when the parameter of uniaxial single-ion anisotropy tends to infinity. Under this restriction, the critical points are characterized by critical exponents from the standard Ising universality class. In a certain subspace of interaction parameters, which corresponds to a coexistence surface between two ordered phases, the model becomes exactly soluble as a symmetric zero-field eight-vertex model. This surface is bounded by a line of bicritical points having interaction-dependent critical exponents that satisfy a weak universality hypothesis.
