Supersymmetric relativistic quantum mechanics in time-domain

A supersymmetric relativistic quantum theory in the temporal domain is developed for bi-spinor fields satisfying the Dirac equation. The simplest time-domain supersymmetric theory can be postulated for fields with time-dependent mass, showing an equivalence with the bosonic supersymmetric theory in time-domain. Solutions are presented and they are used to produce probability oscillations between mass states. As an application of this idea, we study the two-neutrino oscillation problem, showing that flavour state oscillations may emerge from the supersymmetry originated by the time-dependence of the unique mass of the neutrino.

A new approach to solving the Schrödinger equation

A new approach to find exact solutions to one--dimensional quantum mechanical systems is devised. The scheme is based on the introduction of a potential function for the wavefunction, and the equation it satisfies. We recover known solutions as well as to get new ones for both free and interacting particles with wavefunctions having vanishing and non--vanishing Bohm potentials. For most of the potentials, no solutions to the Schrödinger equation produce a vanishing Bohm potential. A (large but) restricted family of potentials allows the existence of particular solutions for which the Bohm potential vanishes. This family of potentials is determined, and several examples are presented. It is shown that some quantum, such as accelerated Airy wavefunctions, are due to the presence of non--vanishing Bohm potentials. New examples of this kind are found and discussed.

Bohm approach to the Gouy phase shift

By adapting the Madelung-Bohm formalism to paraxial wave propagation we show, by using Ermakov-Lewis techniques, that the Gouy phase is related to the form of the phase chosen in order to produce a Gaussian function as a propagated field. For this, we introduce a quantum mechanical invariant, that it is explicitly time dependent despite the fact that the Hamiltonian is itself time-independent. We finally show that the effective Bohm {\it index of refraction} generates a GRIN medium that produces the focusing needed for the Gouy phase.

Bohm potential is real and its effects are measurable

We analyze Bohm's potential effects both in the realms of Quantum Mechanics and Optics, as well as in the study of other physical phenomena described in terms of classical and quantum wave equations. We approach this subject by using theoretical arguments as well as experimental evidence. We find that the effects produced by Bohm's potential are both theoretically responsible for the early success of Quantum Mechanics correctly describing atomic and nuclear phenomena and, more recently, by confirming surprising accelerating behavior of free waves and particles experimentally, for instance.

Casimir force induced by electromagnetic wave polarization in Kerr, Gödel and Bianchi--I spacetimes

Electromagnetic waves propagation on either rotating or anisotropic spacetime backgrounds (such as Kerr and Gödel metrics, or Bianchi-I metric) produce a reduction of the magnitude of Casimir forces between plates. These curved spacetimes behave as chiral or birefringent materials producing dispersion of electromagnetic waves, in such a way that right- and left-circularly polarized light waves propagate with different phase velocities. Results are explicitly calculated for discussed cases. The difference on the wavevectors of the two polarized electromagnetic waves produces an abatement of a Casimir force which depends on the interaction between the polarization of electromagnetic waves and the properties of the spacetime.

Classical and Quantum Dispersion Relations

It is showed that, in general, classical and quantum dispersion relations are different due to the presence of the Bohm potential. There are exact particular solutions of the quantum (wave) theory which obey the classical dispersion relation, but they differ in the general case. The dispersion relations may also coincide when additional assumptions are made, such as WKB or eikonal approximations, for instance. This general result also holds for non--quantum wave equations derived from classical counterparts, such as in ray and wave optics, for instance. Explicit examples are given for covariant scalar, vectorial and tensorial fields in flat and curved spacetimes.

Dual wavefunctions in two-dimensional quantum mechanics

It is shown that the Schrodinger equation for a large family of pairs of two-dimensional quantum potentials possess wavefuctions for which the amplitude and the phase are interchangeable, producing two different solutions which are dual to each other. This is a property of solutions with vanishing Bohm potential. These solutions can be extended to three-dimensional systems. We explicitly calculate dual solutions for physical systems, such as the repulsive harmonic oscillator and the two-dimensional hydrogen atom. These dual wavefunctions are also solutions of an analogue optical system in the eikonal limit. In this case, the potential is related to the refractive index, allowing the study of this two-dimensional dual wavefunction solutions with an optical (analogue) system.

Quantum particles that behave as free classical particles

The existence of non-vanishing Bohm potentials, in the Madelung-Bohm version of the Schrödinger equation, allows for the construction of particular solutions for states of quantum particles interacting with non-trivial external potentials that propagate as free classical particles. Such solutions are constructed with phases which satisfy the classical Hamilton-Jacobi for free particles and whose probability densities propagate with constant velocity, as free classical particles do.

Unification of massless field equations solutions for any spin

A unification of Klein--Gordon, Dirac, Maxwell, Rarita--Schwinger and Einstein equations exact solutions (for the massless fields cases) is presented. The method is based on writing all of the relevant dynamical fields in terms of products and derivatives of pre--potential functions, which satisfy d'Alambert equation. The coupled equations satisfied by the pre--potentials are non-linear. Remarkably, there are particular solutions of (gradient) orthogonal pre--potentials that satisfy the usual wave equation which may be used to construct {\it{exact non--trivial solutions to Klein--Gordon, Dirac, Maxwell, Rarita--Schwinger and (linearized and full) Einstein equations}}, thus giving rise to a unification of the solutions of all massless field equations for any spin. Some solutions written in terms of orthogonal pre--potentials are presented. Relations of this method to previously developed ones, as well as to other subjects in physics are pointed out.

Propagation of light in linear and quadratic GRIN media: The Bohm potential

It is shown that field propagation in linear and quadratic gradient-index (GRIN) media obeys the same rules of free propagation in the sense that a field propagating in free space has a (mathematical) form that may be {\it exported} to those particular GRIN media. The Bohm potential is introduced in order to explain the reason of such behavior: it changes the dynamics by modifying the original potential. The concrete cases of two different initials conditions for each potential are analyzed.

Class of exact solutions for a cosmological model of unified gravitational and quintessence fields

A new approach to tackle Einstein equations for an isotropic and homogeneous Friedmann--Robertson--Walker Universe in the presence of a quintessence scalar field is devised. It provides a way to get a simple exact solution to these equations. This solution determines the quintessence potential uniquely and it differs from solutions which have been used to study inflation previously. It relays on a unification of geometry and dark matter implemented through the definition of a functional relation between the scale factor of the Universe and the quintessence field. For a positive curvature Universe, this solution produces perpetual accelerated expansion rate of the Universe, while the Hubble parameter increases abruptly, attains a maximum value and decreases thereafter. The behavior of this cosmological solution is discussed and its main features are displayed. The formalism is extended to include matter and radiation.

On the Possibility of Non-Geodesic Motion of the Massless Spinning Top

The motion of spinning massless particles in gravitationally curved backgrounds is revisited by considering new types of constraints. Those constraints guarantee zero mass ($P_μP^μ=0$) and they allow for the possibility of trajectories which are not simply null geodesics. To exemplify this previously unknown possibility, the equations of motion are solved for radial motion in Schwarzschild background. It is found that the particle experiences a spin-induced energy shift, which is proportional to the Hawking temperature of the black hole background.

Spinning particles coupled to gravity

Recent experimental work has determined that free falling $^{87}$Rb atoms on Earth, with vertically aligned spins, follow geodesics, thus apparently ruling out spin--gravitation interactions. It is showed that while some spinning matter models coupled to gravitation referenced to in that work seem to be ruled out by the experiment, those same experimental results confirm theoretical results derived from a Lagrangian description of spinning particles coupled to gravity constructed over forty years ago. A proposal to carry out (similar but) different experiments which will help to test the validity of the Universality of Free Fall as opposed to the correctness of the aforementioned Lagrangian theory, is presented.

Supersymmetric Majorana Quantum Cosmologies

The Einstein equations for an isotropic and homogeneous Friedmann--Robertson--Walker Universe in the presence of a quintessence scalar field are shown to be described in a unified way, formally identical to the dynamics of a relativistic particle moving on a two--dimensional spacetime. The correct Lagrangian for the system is presented and used to construct a spinor quantum cosmology theory using Breit's prescription. The theory is supersymmetric when written in Majorana representation. The spinor components interact through a potential that unifies spacetime curvature and quintessence. An exact supersymmetric solution for $k=0$ case is exhibited. This quantum cosmology model may be interpreted as a theory of interacting universes.

Construction of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Structures starting from one Constant of Motion

The problem of the construction of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian structures starting from two first order equations of motion is presented. This new approach requires the knowledge of one (time independent) constant of motion for the dynamical system only. The Hamiltonian and Lagrangian structures are constructed, the Hamilton Jacobi equation is then written and solved and the second (time dependent) constant of the motion for the problem is explicitly exhibited.

Spinning massive test particles in cosmological and general static spherically symmetric spacetimes

A Lagrangian formalism is used to study the motion of a spinning massive particle in Friedmann--Robertson--Walker and Gödel spacetimes, as well as in a general Schwarzschild-like spacetime and in static spherically symmetric conformally flat spacetimes. Exact solutions for the motion of the particle and general exact expressions for the momenta and velocities are displayed for different cases. In particular, the solution for the motion in spherically symmetric metrics is presented in the equatorial plane. The exact solutions are found using constants of motion of the particle, namely its mass, its spin, its angular momentum, and a fourth constant, which is its energy when the metric is time independent, and a different constant otherwise. These constants are associated to Killing vectors. In the case of the motion on the Friedmann--Robertson--Walker metric, a new constant of motion is found. This is the fourth constant which generalizes previously known results obtained for spinless particles. In the case of general Schwarzschild-like spacetimes, our results allow for the exploration of the case of the Reissner-Nordstrom-(Anti)de Sitter metric. Finally, for the case of the conformally flat spacetimes, the solution is explicitly evaluated for different metric tensors associated to a universe filled with static perfect fluids and electromagnetic radiation. For some combination of the values of the constants of motion the particle trajectories may exhibit spacelike velocity vectors in portions of the trajectories.

Origin of conical dispersion relations

A mechanism that produces conical dispersion relations is presented. A Kronig Penney one dimensional array with two different strengths delta function potentials gives rise to both the gap closure and the dispersion relation observed in graphene and other materials. The Schr\''odinger eigenvalue problem is locally invariant under the infinite dimensional Virasoro algebra near conical dispersion points in reciprocal space, thus suggesting a possible relation to string theory.

Can gravitation accelerate neutrinos?

The Lagrangian equations of motion for massive spinning test particles (tops) moving on a gravitational background using General Relativity are presented. The paths followed by tops are nongeodesic. An exact solution for the motion of tops on a Schwarzschild background which allows for superluminal propagation of tops is studied. It is shown that the solution becomes relevant for particles with small masses, such as neutrinos. This general result is used to calculate the necessary condition to produce superluminal motion in part of the trajectory of a small mass particle in a weak gravitational field. The condition for superluminal motion establishes a relation between the mass, energy and total angular momentum of the particle.

Dynamics determines geometry

The inverse problem of calculus of variations and $s$-equivalence are re-examined by using results obtained from non-commutative geometry ideas. The role played by the structure of the modified Poisson brackets is discussed in a general context and it is argued that classical $s$-equivalent systems may be non-equivalent at the quantum mechanical level. This last fact is explicitly discussed comparing different approaches to deal with the Nair-Polychronakos oscillator.

Multi-Lagrangians, Hereditary Operators and Lax Pairs for the Korteweg-de Vries Positive and Negative Hierarchies

We present an approach to the construction of action principles for differential equations, and apply it to field theory in order to construct systematically, for integrable equations which are based on a Nijenhuis (or hereditary) operator, a ladder of action principles which is complementary to the well-known multi-Hamiltonian formulation. We work out results for the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, which is a member of the positive hierarchy related to a hereditary operator. Three negative hierarchies of (negative) evolution equations are defined naturally from the hereditary operator as well, in the context of field theory. The Euler-Lagrange equations arising from the action principles are equivalent to the original evolution equation + deformations, which are obtained in terms of the positive and negative evolution vectors. We recognize the Liouville, Sinh-Gordon, Hunter-Zheng and Camassa-Holm equations as negative equations. The ladder for KdV is directly mappable to a ladder for any of these negative equations and other positive equations (e.g., the Harry-Dym and a special case of the Krichever-Novikov equations): a new nonlocal action principle for the deformed system Sinh-Gordon + spatial translation vector is presented. Several nonequivalent, nonlocal time-reparametrization invariant action principles for KdV are constructed. Hamiltonian and Symplectic operators are obtained in factorized form. Alternative Lax pairs for all negative flows are constructed, using the flows and the hereditary operator as only input. From this result we prove that all positive and negative equations in the hierarchies share the same sets of local and nonlocal constants of the motion for KdV, which are explicitly obtained using the local and nonlocal action principles for KdV.

Comment on "Quantum bound states with zero binding energy"

The purpose of this Comment is to show that the solutions to the zero energy Schrödinger equations for monomial central potentials discussed in a recently published Letter, may also be obtained from the corresponding free particle solutions in a straight forwardly way, using an algorithm previously devised by us. New solutions to the zero energy Schrödinger equation are also exhibited.
