Supersymmetric relativistic quantum mechanics in time-domain

A supersymmetric relativistic quantum theory in the temporal domain is developed for bi-spinor fields satisfying the Dirac equation. The simplest time-domain supersymmetric theory can be postulated for fields with time-dependent mass, showing an equivalence with the bosonic supersymmetric theory in time-domain. Solutions are presented and they are used to produce probability oscillations between mass states. As an application of this idea, we study the two-neutrino oscillation problem, showing that flavour state oscillations may emerge from the supersymmetry originated by the time-dependence of the unique mass of the neutrino.

A new approach to solving the Schrödinger equation

A new approach to find exact solutions to one--dimensional quantum mechanical systems is devised. The scheme is based on the introduction of a potential function for the wavefunction, and the equation it satisfies. We recover known solutions as well as to get new ones for both free and interacting particles with wavefunctions having vanishing and non--vanishing Bohm potentials. For most of the potentials, no solutions to the Schrödinger equation produce a vanishing Bohm potential. A (large but) restricted family of potentials allows the existence of particular solutions for which the Bohm potential vanishes. This family of potentials is determined, and several examples are presented. It is shown that some quantum, such as accelerated Airy wavefunctions, are due to the presence of non--vanishing Bohm potentials. New examples of this kind are found and discussed.

Bohm approach to the Gouy phase shift

By adapting the Madelung-Bohm formalism to paraxial wave propagation we show, by using Ermakov-Lewis techniques, that the Gouy phase is related to the form of the phase chosen in order to produce a Gaussian function as a propagated field. For this, we introduce a quantum mechanical invariant, that it is explicitly time dependent despite the fact that the Hamiltonian is itself time-independent. We finally show that the effective Bohm {\it index of refraction} generates a GRIN medium that produces the focusing needed for the Gouy phase.

Bohm potential is real and its effects are measurable

We analyze Bohm's potential effects both in the realms of Quantum Mechanics and Optics, as well as in the study of other physical phenomena described in terms of classical and quantum wave equations. We approach this subject by using theoretical arguments as well as experimental evidence. We find that the effects produced by Bohm's potential are both theoretically responsible for the early success of Quantum Mechanics correctly describing atomic and nuclear phenomena and, more recently, by confirming surprising accelerating behavior of free waves and particles experimentally, for instance.

Casimir force induced by electromagnetic wave polarization in Kerr, Gödel and Bianchi--I spacetimes

Electromagnetic waves propagation on either rotating or anisotropic spacetime backgrounds (such as Kerr and Gödel metrics, or Bianchi-I metric) produce a reduction of the magnitude of Casimir forces between plates. These curved spacetimes behave as chiral or birefringent materials producing dispersion of electromagnetic waves, in such a way that right- and left-circularly polarized light waves propagate with different phase velocities. Results are explicitly calculated for discussed cases. The difference on the wavevectors of the two polarized electromagnetic waves produces an abatement of a Casimir force which depends on the interaction between the polarization of electromagnetic waves and the properties of the spacetime.

Classical and Quantum Dispersion Relations

It is showed that, in general, classical and quantum dispersion relations are different due to the presence of the Bohm potential. There are exact particular solutions of the quantum (wave) theory which obey the classical dispersion relation, but they differ in the general case. The dispersion relations may also coincide when additional assumptions are made, such as WKB or eikonal approximations, for instance. This general result also holds for non--quantum wave equations derived from classical counterparts, such as in ray and wave optics, for instance. Explicit examples are given for covariant scalar, vectorial and tensorial fields in flat and curved spacetimes.

Dual wavefunctions in two-dimensional quantum mechanics

It is shown that the Schrodinger equation for a large family of pairs of two-dimensional quantum potentials possess wavefuctions for which the amplitude and the phase are interchangeable, producing two different solutions which are dual to each other. This is a property of solutions with vanishing Bohm potential. These solutions can be extended to three-dimensional systems. We explicitly calculate dual solutions for physical systems, such as the repulsive harmonic oscillator and the two-dimensional hydrogen atom. These dual wavefunctions are also solutions of an analogue optical system in the eikonal limit. In this case, the potential is related to the refractive index, allowing the study of this two-dimensional dual wavefunction solutions with an optical (analogue) system.

Quantum particles that behave as free classical particles

The existence of non-vanishing Bohm potentials, in the Madelung-Bohm version of the Schrödinger equation, allows for the construction of particular solutions for states of quantum particles interacting with non-trivial external potentials that propagate as free classical particles. Such solutions are constructed with phases which satisfy the classical Hamilton-Jacobi for free particles and whose probability densities propagate with constant velocity, as free classical particles do.

Unification of massless field equations solutions for any spin

A unification of Klein--Gordon, Dirac, Maxwell, Rarita--Schwinger and Einstein equations exact solutions (for the massless fields cases) is presented. The method is based on writing all of the relevant dynamical fields in terms of products and derivatives of pre--potential functions, which satisfy d'Alambert equation. The coupled equations satisfied by the pre--potentials are non-linear. Remarkably, there are particular solutions of (gradient) orthogonal pre--potentials that satisfy the usual wave equation which may be used to construct {\it{exact non--trivial solutions to Klein--Gordon, Dirac, Maxwell, Rarita--Schwinger and (linearized and full) Einstein equations}}, thus giving rise to a unification of the solutions of all massless field equations for any spin. Some solutions written in terms of orthogonal pre--potentials are presented. Relations of this method to previously developed ones, as well as to other subjects in physics are pointed out.

Exact equilibrium state for pair plasmas near the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole

A pair plasma in hidrostatic equilibrium near the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole is an exact state. In this work, we show that an exact non--hidrostatic equilibrium state can be sustained for a pair plasma, in which its constituents are moving near the horizon of the black hole. This equilibrium state solution is not due to a vortical formalism, but by the balance of forces in the plasma. This new equilibrium state has a pressure for the hydrostatic equilibrium, although the plasma moves. The equilibrium is achieved by the generation of a magnetic field that emerges by the interplay between the plasma dynamics and the gravitational field, having no flat spacetime analogue. No electric fields are needed to sustain the equilibria. The magnetic field shows an exponential decaying behavior, governed by a function that depends on the properties of the pair plasma and the black, and that plays the role of a characteristc length of the dynamics of the magnetic field.

Generalized Magnetofluid Connections in Curved Spacetime

The ideal magnetohydrodynamic theorem on the conservation of the magnetic connections between plasma elements is extended to non-ideal relativistic plasmas in curved spacetime. The existence of generalized magnetofluid connections that are preserved by the plasma dynamics is formalized by means of a covariant connection equation that includes different non-ideal effects. These generalized connections are constituted by 2-dimensional hypersurfaces, which are linked to an antisymmetric tensor field that unifies the electromagnetic and fluid fields. They can be interpreted in terms of generalized magnetofluid vorticity field lines by considering a 3+1 foliation of spacetime and a time resetting projection that compensates for the loss of simultaneity in different reference frames between spatially separated events. The worldsheets of the generalized magnetofluid vorticity field lines play a fundamental role in the plasma dynamics by prohibiting evolutions that do not preserve the magnetofluid connectivity.

Magnetic Reconnection as a Mechanism for Energy Extraction from Rotating Black Holes

Spinning black holes store rotational energy that can be extracted. When a black hole is immersed in an externally supplied magnetic field, reconnection of magnetic field lines within the ergosphere can generate negative energy (relative to infinity) particles that fall into the black hole event horizon while other particles escape stealing energy from the black hole. We show analytically that energy extraction via magnetic reconnection is possible when the black hole spin is high (dimensionless spin $a\sim1$) and the plasma is strongly magnetized (plasma magnetization $σ_0>1/3$). The parameter space region where energy extraction is allowed depends on the plasma magnetization and the orientation of the reconnecting magnetic field lines. For $σ_0 \gg 1$, the asymptotic negative energy at infinity per enthalpy of the decelerated plasma that is swallowed by a maximally rotating black hole is found to be $ε^\infty_- \simeq - \sqrt{σ_0/3}$. The accelerated plasma that escapes to infinity and takes away black hole energy asymptotes the energy at infinity per enthalpy $ε^\infty_+ \simeq \sqrt{3σ_0}$. We show that the maximum power extracted from the black hole by the escaping plasma is $P_{\rm extr}^{\rm max} \sim 0.1 M^2\sqrt{σ_0}\,w_0$ (here, $M$ is the black hole mass and $w_0$ is the plasma enthalpy density) for the collisionless plasma regime and one order of magnitude lower for the collisional regime. Energy extraction causes a significant spindown of the black hole when $a \sim 1$. The maximum efficiency of the plasma energization process via magnetic reconnection in the ergosphere is found to be $η_{\rm max} \simeq 3/2$. Since fast magnetic reconnection in the ergosphere should occur intermittently in the scenario proposed here, the associated emission within a few gravitational radii from the black hole is expected to display a bursty nature.

Propagation of light in linear and quadratic GRIN media: The Bohm potential

It is shown that field propagation in linear and quadratic gradient-index (GRIN) media obeys the same rules of free propagation in the sense that a field propagating in free space has a (mathematical) form that may be {\it exported} to those particular GRIN media. The Bohm potential is introduced in order to explain the reason of such behavior: it changes the dynamics by modifying the original potential. The concrete cases of two different initials conditions for each potential are analyzed.

Weighing the Sun with five photographs

With only five photographs of the Sun at different dates we show that the mass of Sun can be calculated by using a telescope, a camera, and the Kepler's third law. With these photographs we are able to calculate the distance between Sun and Earth at different dates in a period of time of about three months. These distances allow us to obtain the correct elliptical orbit of Earth, proving the Kepler's first law. The analysis of the data extracted from photographs is performed by using an analytical optimization approach that allow us to find the parameters of the elliptical orbit. Also, it is shown that the five data points fit an ellipse using an geometrical scheme. The obtained parameters are in very good agreement with the ones for Earth's orbit, allowing us to foresee the future positions of Earth along its trajectory. The parameters for the orbit are used to calculate the Sun's mass by applying the Kepler's third law and Newton's law for gravitation. This method gives a result wich is in excellent agreement with the correct value for the Sun's mass. Thus, in a span of time of about three months, any student is capable to calculate the mass of the sun with only five photographs, a telescope and a camera.

Class of exact solutions for a cosmological model of unified gravitational and quintessence fields

A new approach to tackle Einstein equations for an isotropic and homogeneous Friedmann--Robertson--Walker Universe in the presence of a quintessence scalar field is devised. It provides a way to get a simple exact solution to these equations. This solution determines the quintessence potential uniquely and it differs from solutions which have been used to study inflation previously. It relays on a unification of geometry and dark matter implemented through the definition of a functional relation between the scale factor of the Universe and the quintessence field. For a positive curvature Universe, this solution produces perpetual accelerated expansion rate of the Universe, while the Hubble parameter increases abruptly, attains a maximum value and decreases thereafter. The behavior of this cosmological solution is discussed and its main features are displayed. The formalism is extended to include matter and radiation.

Spinning particles coupled to gravity

Recent experimental work has determined that free falling $^{87}$Rb atoms on Earth, with vertically aligned spins, follow geodesics, thus apparently ruling out spin--gravitation interactions. It is showed that while some spinning matter models coupled to gravitation referenced to in that work seem to be ruled out by the experiment, those same experimental results confirm theoretical results derived from a Lagrangian description of spinning particles coupled to gravity constructed over forty years ago. A proposal to carry out (similar but) different experiments which will help to test the validity of the Universality of Free Fall as opposed to the correctness of the aforementioned Lagrangian theory, is presented.

Generalized Magnetofluid Connections in Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamics

The concept of magnetic connections is extended to non-ideal relativistic magnetohydrodynamical plasmas. Adopting a general set of equations for relativistic magnetohydrodynamics including thermal-inertial, thermal electromotive, Hall and current-inertia effects, we derive a new covariant connection equation showing the existence of generalized magnetofluid connections that are preserved during the dissipationless plasma dynamics. These connections are intimately linked to a general antisymmetric tensor that unifies the electromagnetic and fluid fields, allowing the extension of the magnetic connection notion to a much broader concept.

Supersymmetric Majorana Quantum Cosmologies

The Einstein equations for an isotropic and homogeneous Friedmann--Robertson--Walker Universe in the presence of a quintessence scalar field are shown to be described in a unified way, formally identical to the dynamics of a relativistic particle moving on a two--dimensional spacetime. The correct Lagrangian for the system is presented and used to construct a spinor quantum cosmology theory using Breit's prescription. The theory is supersymmetric when written in Majorana representation. The spinor components interact through a potential that unifies spacetime curvature and quintessence. An exact supersymmetric solution for $k=0$ case is exhibited. This quantum cosmology model may be interpreted as a theory of interacting universes.

Spinning massive test particles in cosmological and general static spherically symmetric spacetimes

A Lagrangian formalism is used to study the motion of a spinning massive particle in Friedmann--Robertson--Walker and Gödel spacetimes, as well as in a general Schwarzschild-like spacetime and in static spherically symmetric conformally flat spacetimes. Exact solutions for the motion of the particle and general exact expressions for the momenta and velocities are displayed for different cases. In particular, the solution for the motion in spherically symmetric metrics is presented in the equatorial plane. The exact solutions are found using constants of motion of the particle, namely its mass, its spin, its angular momentum, and a fourth constant, which is its energy when the metric is time independent, and a different constant otherwise. These constants are associated to Killing vectors. In the case of the motion on the Friedmann--Robertson--Walker metric, a new constant of motion is found. This is the fourth constant which generalizes previously known results obtained for spinless particles. In the case of general Schwarzschild-like spacetimes, our results allow for the exploration of the case of the Reissner-Nordstrom-(Anti)de Sitter metric. Finally, for the case of the conformally flat spacetimes, the solution is explicitly evaluated for different metric tensors associated to a universe filled with static perfect fluids and electromagnetic radiation. For some combination of the values of the constants of motion the particle trajectories may exhibit spacelike velocity vectors in portions of the trajectories.

Hot Fluids and Nonlinear Quantum Mechanics

It is shown that a hot relativistic fluid could be viewed as a collection of self-interacting quantum objects. They obey a nonlinear equation which is a modification of the quantum equation obeyed by elementary constituents of the fluid. A uniform phenomenological prescription, to affect the quantum transition from a corresponding classical system, is invoked to derive the nonlinear Schrödinger, Klein-Gordon, and Pauli-Schrödinger equations. It is expected that the created nonlinear quantum mechanics would advance, in a fundamental way, both the conceptual understanding and computational abilities, particularly, in the field of extremely high energy-density physics.

On a consistent macroscopic description for a spin quantum plasma with interparticle interactions

Quantum mechanical averaging of the particle concentration operator is an effective starting point for derivation of the many-particle quantum hydrodynamic equations. In many-particle quantum systems, we have to separate the ordered motion of the local center of mass (velocity field), the thermal, and the quantum motion. The quantum mechanical average process, invoked here, is completely determined, and is different from the usual averaging processes that introduces undefined probabilities for quantum states. It is shown that the Madelung decomposition for the $N$-particle spinor wave function allows the correct introduction of the velocity field, and gives explicit expressions for the quantum contributions to both the momentum, and the spin flux. The formalism also contains plasma effects produced by the Coulomb and spin-spin interparticle interactions. It is shown that both interactions appear in plasma dynamics as effective electric and magnetic fields. As result we find a fully coherent description for spin quantum plasma in the self-consistent field approximation for interparticle interactions. A simple consequence - the change brought about by interparticle correlations on the propagation of electrostatic waves in a spin quantum plasma - is discussed.

Can gravitation accelerate neutrinos?

The Lagrangian equations of motion for massive spinning test particles (tops) moving on a gravitational background using General Relativity are presented. The paths followed by tops are nongeodesic. An exact solution for the motion of tops on a Schwarzschild background which allows for superluminal propagation of tops is studied. It is shown that the solution becomes relevant for particles with small masses, such as neutrinos. This general result is used to calculate the necessary condition to produce superluminal motion in part of the trajectory of a small mass particle in a weak gravitational field. The condition for superluminal motion establishes a relation between the mass, energy and total angular momentum of the particle.

Generating vorticity and magnetic fields in plasmas in general relativity: spacetime curvature drive

Using the generally covariant magnetofluid formalism for a hot plasma, a new spacetime curvature driven mechanism for generating seed vorticity/magnetic field is presented. The ``battery'' owes its origin to the interaction between gravity and the inhomogeneous plasma thermodynamics. The general relativistic drive is evaluated for two simple cases: seed formation in a simplified model of a hot plasma accreting in stable orbits around a Schwarzschild black hole, and for particles in free fall near the horizon. Some astrophysical applications are suggested.

Magnetic field generation in curved spacetimes

Using the generally covariant magnetofluid formalism for a hot plasma, a new curvature (of space time) driven mechanism for generating seed vorticity/magnetic field is presented. The "battery" owes its origin to the interaction between gravity (epitomized in the spatial variation of the metric tensor) and the inhomogeneous plasma thermodynamics. The general relativistic drive for the seed field is evaluated in a simplified model of a hot plasma accreting around a Schwarzschild black hole. Some astrophysical applications are suggested.

Vortical Dynamics of spinning quantum plasmas - Helicity Conservation

It is shown that a vorticity, constructed from spin field of a quantum spinning plasma, combines with the classical generalized vorticity (representing the magnetic and the velocity fields) to yield a new grand generalized vorticity that obeys the standard vortex dynamics. Expressions for the quantum or spin vorticity, and for the resulting generalized helicity invariant are derived. Reduction of the rather complex spinning quantum system to a well known and highly investigated classical form opens familiar channels for the delineation of physics peculiar to dense plasmas spanning solid state to astrophysical objects. A simple example is worked out to show that the magnetics of a spinning plasma can be much richer than that of the corresponding classical system.

Exact solution for large amplitude circularly polarized electromagnetic waves in incompressible spin quantum Hall magnetohydrodynamics

It is shown that incompressible spin quantum Hall magnetohydrodynamics allows an exact solution for the propagation of a circularly polarized electromagnetic wave. The solution is obtained assuming a condition between the fluid velocity and the magnetic field which eliminates the nonlinear terms in Maxwell equations. As a result of the coupling with spin, the propagation mode depends on the amplitude of the magnetic field. From the full solution, the limits of small and large wavenumber are studied obtaining linear and a nonlinear spin-modified modes.

The effect of spin magnetization in the damping of electron plasma oscillations

The effect of spin of particles in the propagation of plasma waves is studied using a semi-classical kinetic theory for a magnetized plasma. We focus in the simple damping effects for the electrostatic wave modes besides Landau damping. Without taking into account more quantum effects than spin contribution to Vlasov's equation, we show that spin produces a new damping or instability which is proportional to the zeroth order magnetization of the system. This correction depends on the electromagnetic part of the wave which is coupled with the spin vector.

The quantum effects of the spin and the Bohm potential in the oblique propagation of magnetosonic waves

We study the quantum corrections to the oblique propagation of the magnetosonic waves in a warm quantum magnetoplasma composed by mobile ions and electrons. We use a fluid formalism to include quantum corrections due to the Bohm potential and to magnetization energy of electrons due to its spin. The effects of both quantum corrections are shown in the dispersion relation for perpendicular, parallel and oblique propagation. We find that the quantum contributions to the low-frequency depends on the type of propagation we are studying.
