Photon echoes in optically dense media

Coherent nonlinear multi-pulse processes, nonlinear waves and echo effects in resonant media are the topical problems of modern optics and important tools of coherent spectroscopy and quantum information science. We generalize the McCall-Hahn area theorem to the formation of an arbitrary photon echo generated during the multi-pulse excitation of the optically dense resonant media. The derived theorem made it possible to reveal the nonlinear mechanism of generation and evolution of the photon echo signals inside the media after a two-pulse excitation. We find that a series of self-reviving echo signals with total area of $2π$ or $0π$ is excited and propagates in the media depth, with each pulse having an individual area less than $π$. The resulting echo pulse train is a new alternative to the well-known soliton or breather. The developed pulse-area approach paves the way for more precise coherent spectroscopy, studies of different photon echo signals and quantum control of light pulses in the optically dense media.

Model of a Programmable Quantum Processing Device

We propose a model of a programmable quantum processing device realizable with existing nanophotonic technologies and which can be viewed as a basis for new high performance hardware architectures. We present protocols and their physical implementation on the controlled photon transfer for executing basic single-qubit and multi-qubit gates. The possible operation of this quantum computer scheme is analyzed. The physical architecture is then formalized by a mathematical model of the Quantum Processing Unit (QPU), which is used as a basis for the Quantum Programming Framework that makes it possible to perform universal quantum computations in a multitasking environment.

Encoded Universality of Quantum Computations on the Multi-Atomic Ensembles in the QED Cavity

We propose an effective set of elementary quantum gates which provide an encoded universality and demonstrate the physical feasibility of these gates for the solid-state quantum computer based on the multi-atomic systems in the QED cavity. We use the two-qubit encoding and swapping-based operations to simplify a physical realization of universal quantum computing and add the immunity to a number of errors. This approach allows to implement any encoded single-qubit operation by three elementary gates and the encoded controlled- NOT operation can be performed in a single step. The considerable advantages are also shown for implementing some commonly used controlled gates.

Universal derivative-free optimization method with quadratic convergence

A new universal derivative-free optimization method CDOS (Conjugate Direction with Orthogonal Shift) is proposed. The CDOS method was specially developed to solve optimization tasks where the objective function and constraints are black boxes. The method has quadratic convergence for quadratic and near quadratic functions. An objective function can be non-differentiable and non-continuous. For constrained optimization the constraints can also be non-differentiable and non-continuous. The method handles inequality constraints directly, i.e., it does not transform the objective function, nor uses numeric values of the inequality constraints - it uses only the fact of constraint violation.
