Low-temperature specific-heat studies on two square-kagome antiferromagnets

We studied the low-temperature specific heats of two antiferromagnets with the two-dimensional square-kagome structure, i.e., KCu$_6$AlBiO$_4$(SO$_4$)$_5$Cl (KCu6) and Na$_6$Cu$_7$BiO$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$[Cl,(OH)]$_3$ (NaCu7) with the structural differences that there are interlayer Cu$^{2+}$ ions in NaCu7. Both materials show no magnetic ordering down to 50 mK. At zero field, the $C/T$ of KCu6 has a finite value when the temperature is close to zero K. Under the magnetic field, a seemingly $T^2$ dependence appears and its coefficient is progressively suppressed by the field. For NaCu7, the specific heat exhibits the $T^2$ dependence at zero field and under fields. The ratio of the quadratic coefficients of KCu6 and NaCu7 at high fields is inversely proportional to ratio of the squared Weiss temperatures, which indicates these two compounds host the same ground state under fields. Our results suggest that the interlayer Cu$^{2+}$ ions in NaCu7 play a negligible role in determination of its ground state. We discuss the possible quantum-spin-liquid states in these compounds and further directions to pursue based our results.

Chemical composition control at the substrate interface as the key for FeSe thin film growth

The strong fascination exerted by the binary compound of FeSe demands reliable engineering protocols and more effective approaches towards inducing superconductivity in FeSe thin films. Our study addresses the peculiarities in pulsed laser deposition which determine FeSe thin film growth and focuses on the film/substrate interface, the tendency for domain matching epitaxial growth but also the disadvantage of chemical heterogeneity. We propose that homogenization of the substrate surface improves the control of stoichiometry, texture, and nanostrain in a way that favors superconductivity even in ultrathin FeSe films. The controlled interface in FeSe/Fe/MgO demonstrates the proof-of-principle.

Model of a Programmable Quantum Processing Device

We propose a model of a programmable quantum processing device realizable with existing nanophotonic technologies and which can be viewed as a basis for new high performance hardware architectures. We present protocols and their physical implementation on the controlled photon transfer for executing basic single-qubit and multi-qubit gates. The possible operation of this quantum computer scheme is analyzed. The physical architecture is then formalized by a mathematical model of the Quantum Processing Unit (QPU), which is used as a basis for the Quantum Programming Framework that makes it possible to perform universal quantum computations in a multitasking environment.

Quantum Communications Based on Quantum Hashing

In this paper we consider an application of the recently proposed quantum hashing technique for computing Boolean functions in the quantum communication model. The combination of binary functions on non-binary quantum hash function is done via polynomial presentation, which we have called a characteristic of a Boolean function. Based on the characteristic polynomial presentation of Boolean functions and quantum hashing technique we present a method for computing Boolean functions in the quantum one-way communication model, where one of the parties performs his computations and sends a message to the other party, who must output the result after his part of computations. Some of the results are also true in a more restricted Simultaneous Message Passing model with no shared resources, in which communicating parties can interact only via the referee. We give several examples of Boolean functions whose polynomial presentations have specific properties allowing for construction of quantum communication protocols that are provably exponentially better than classical ones in the simultaneous message passing setting.

Quantum Hashing for Finite Abelian Groups

We propose a generalization of the quantum hashing technique based on the notion of the small-bias sets. These sets have proved useful in different areas of computer science, and here their properties give an optimal construction for succinct quantum presentation of elements of any finite abelian group, which can be used in various computational and cryptographic scenarios. The known quantum fingerprinting schemas turn out to be the special cases of the proposed quantum hashing for the corresponding abelian group.

Crystal growth, transport phenomena and two gap superconductivity in the mixed alkali metal $(K_{1-z}Na_z)_{x}Fe_{2-y}Se_2$ iron selenide

Using the self-flux technique we grew superconducting $(K_{1-z}Na_z)_{x}Fe_{2-y}Se_2$ (z = 0.3) single crystals. The EDX mapping revealed the uniform elements distribution on the crystal surface while the XRD measurements indicate that the crystals are compositionally inhomogenous on nanoscale. The physical properties of the as-prepared sample are characterized by electrical resistivity, magnetization and specific heat measurements. Resistivity measurements show the onset of the superconducting transition at 33 K and zero resistivity at 31.7 K. The large upper critical field $H_{c2}$(0) was estimated as high as about of 140 T for the in-plane field and 38 T for the out-of-plane field. The anisotropy of $H_{c2}^{ab}(0)/H_{c2}^{c}(0)$ and coherence lengths $ξ^{ab}(0)/ξ^{c}$(0) was found to be around 3.7. The pioneer studies by multiple Andreev reflections effect spectroscopy ("break-junction" technique) revealed the presence of two anisotropic superconducting gaps $Δ_L\,=\,(9.3\pm1.5)\,meV$, $Δ_S\,=\,(1.9\pm0.4)\,meV$, and provided measuring of the $Δ_L$(T) temperature dependence. The BCS-ratio for the large gap $2Δ_L/k_BT_c^{bulk}\,\approx\,6.3$ points to a strong electron-boson coupling in the "driving" condensate characterized by $Δ_L$ order parameter.

A 57Fe Mössbauer Study Of Local Structure And Spin Arrangements In Antiferromagnetic NaFeAs

Detailed 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy measurements on superconducting NaFeAs powder crystals have been performed. The 57Fe spectra recorded in the paramagnetic temperature range (T > TN \approx 46 +/- 2 K) were discussed supposing Fe2+ ions are located in distorted tetrahedral (FeAs4) polyhedra. Our results reveal that the structural transition (TS \approx 55 K) has a weak effect on the electronic structure of iron atoms while the development of the antiferromagnetic order (T =< TN) induces a redistribution of the charge at 57Fe nuclei. In the low-temperature range, the spectra show a diffuse resonance absorption structure which evidences for the existence of a continuous distribution of hyperfine fields HFe at 57Fe nuclei. The shape of these spectra can be related to the formation of a microdomain structure or phase separation. Analysis of the resulting distributions p(HFe) has shown that the Mössbauer spectra give consistent and physically reasonable 57Fe hyperfine parameters over the whole temperature range.

Interplay between lattice and spin states degree of freedom in the FeSe superconductor: dynamic spin state instabilities

Polarized Raman-scattering spectra of superconducting, single-crystalline FeSe evidence pronounced phonon anomalies with temperature reduction. A large 6.5% hardening of the B_1g(Fe) phonon mode is attributed to the suppression of local fluctuations of the iron spin state with the gradual decrease of the iron paramagnetic moment. The ab-initio lattice dynamic calculations support this conclusion. The enhancement of the low-frequency spectral weight above the structural phase transition temperature T_s and its change below T_s is discussed in relation with the opening of an energy gap between low (S=0) and higher spin states which prevents magnetic order in FeSe. The very narrow phonon line widths compared to observations in FeTe suggests the absence of intermediate spin states in the fluctuating spin state manifold in FeSe.

Local Structure and Hyperfine Interactions of 57Fe in NaFeAs Studied by Mossbauer Spectroscopy

Detailed 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy measurements on superconducting NaFeAs powder samples have been performed in the temperature range 13 K < T < 300 K. The 57Fe spectra recorded in the paramagnetic range (T > TN ~ 46 K) were discussed supposing that most of the Fe2+ ions are located in distorted (FeAs4) tetrahedral of NaFeAs phase, while additional minor (< 10%) component of the spectra corresponds to impurity or intergrowth NaFe2As2 phase with a nominal composition near "NaFe2As2". Our results reveal that the structural transition (TS ~ 55K) has a weak effect on the electronic structure of iron ions, while at T < TN the spectra show a continuous distribution of hyperfine fields HFe . Shape of these spectra was analyzed in term of two models: (i) an incommensurate spin density wave modulation of iron magnetic structure, (ii) a formation of a microdomain structure or phase separation. It was shown that the hyperfine parameters obtained using these two methods have very similar values over the whole temperature range. The analysis of the temperature dependence HFe(T) with the Bean-Rodbell model leads to ksi = 1.16 +/- 0.05, suggesting that the magnetic phase transition is first-order in nature. A sharp evolution of the VZZ(T) and etha(T) parameters of the full Hamiltonian of hyperfine interactions near T ~ (TN, TS), were interpreted as a manifestation of the anisotropic electron redistribution between the dxz, dyz- and dxy-orbitals of the iron ions.

Quantum Hashing

We present a version of quantum hash function based on non-binary discrete functions. The proposed quantum procedure is "classical-quantum", that is, it takes a classical bit string as an input and produces a quantum state. The resulting function has the property of a one-way function (pre-image resistance), in addition it has the properties analogous to classical cryptographic hash second pre-image resistance and collision resistance. This function can be naturally used in a quantum digital signature protocol.

Encoded Universality of Quantum Computations on the Multi-Atomic Ensembles in the QED Cavity

We propose an effective set of elementary quantum gates which provide an encoded universality and demonstrate the physical feasibility of these gates for the solid-state quantum computer based on the multi-atomic systems in the QED cavity. We use the two-qubit encoding and swapping-based operations to simplify a physical realization of universal quantum computing and add the immunity to a number of errors. This approach allows to implement any encoded single-qubit operation by three elementary gates and the encoded controlled- NOT operation can be performed in a single step. The considerable advantages are also shown for implementing some commonly used controlled gates.

Evidence of quantum phase slip effect in titanium nanowires

Electron transport properties of titanium nanowires were experimentally studied. Below the effective diameter $\lesssim$ 50 nm all samples demonstrated a pronounced broadening of the $R(T)$ dependencies, which cannot be accounted for thermal flcutuations. An extensive microscopic and elemental analysis indicates the absence of structural or/and geometrical imperfection capable to broaden the the $R(T)$ transition to such an extent. We associate the effect with quantum flucutuations of the order parameter.

On Computational Power of Quantum Read-Once Branching Programs

In this paper we review our current results concerning the computational power of quantum read-once branching programs. First of all, based on the circuit presentation of quantum branching programs and our variant of quantum fingerprinting technique, we show that any Boolean function with linear polynomial presentation can be computed by a quantum read-once branching program using a relatively small (usually logarithmic in the size of input) number of qubits. Then we show that the described class of Boolean functions is closed under the polynomial projections.

Quantum Computing on Multi-atomic Ensembles in Quantum Electrodynamics Cavity

We propose an effective realization of a complete set of elementary quantum gates in the solid-state quantum computer based on the multi-atomic coherent (MAC-) ensembles in the QED cavity. Here, we use the two-ensemble qubit encoding and swapping-based operations that together provide implementation of any encoded single-qubit operation by three elementary gates and the encoded controlled-NOT operation is performed in a single step. This approach simplifies a physical realization of universal quantum computing and adds the immunity to a number of errors. We also demonstrate that the proposed architecture of quantum computer satisfies DiVincenzo criteria.
