Graph potentials and symplectic geometry of moduli spaces of vector bundles

We give the first examples of Fano manifolds with multiple optimal tori, i.e.~we construct monotone Lagrangian tori $L$, such that the weighted number of holomorphic Maslov index two discs with boundary on $L$ equals the upper bound given by the symplectic invariant $\limsup_n ([m_0(L)^n]_{x^0})^{1/n}$, where $m_0(L)$ is the Floer potential. To every trivalent graph $γ$ of genus $g$ we associate an optimal torus $L_γ$ on the celebrated symplectic Fano manifold $\mathcal{N}_g$ (of complex dimension $3g-3$) with $\mathrm{T}_{\mathcal{N}_g} = 8g-8$), given by the character variety of rank 2 on a genus $g$ surface with prescribed odd monodromy at a puncture, We moreover show that all pairs $(\mathcal{N}_g,L_γ)$ are pairwise non-isotopic. In particular, we confirm a form of mirror symmetry between the A-model of the pairs $(\mathcal{N}_g,L_γ)$ (and also spaces $\mathcal{N}_g$ standalone) and B-model of graph potentials, a family of Laurent polynomials we introduced in earlier work. A crucial input from outside of symplectic geometry is an analysis of Manon's toric degenerations of algebro-geometric models $\mathrm{M}_C(2,\mathcal{L})$ for the spaces $\mathcal{N}_g$, as moduli spaces of stable rank $2$ bundles on an algebraic curve with a fixed determinant, constructed using conformal field theory.

Examples violating Golyshev's canonical strip hypotheses

We give the first examples of smooth Fano and Calabi-Yau varieties violating the (narrow) canonical strip hypothesis, which concerns the location of the roots of Hilbert polynomials of polarised varieties. They are given by moduli spaces of rank 2 bundles with fixed odd-degree determinant on curves of sufficiently high genus, hence our Fano examples have Picard rank 1, index 2, are rational, and have moduli. The hypotheses also fail for several other closely related varieties.

The conifold point

Consider a Laurent polynomial with real positive coefficients such that the origin is strictly inside its Newton polytope. Then it is strongly convex as a function of real positive argument. So it has a distinguished Morse critical point --- the unique critical point with real positive coordinates. As a consequence we obtain a positive answer to a question of Ostrover and Tyomkin: the quantum cohomology algebra of a toric Fano manifold contains a field as a direct summand. Moreover, it gives a good evidence that the same statement holds for any Fano manifold.

The Fano variety of lines and rationality problem for a cubic hypersurface

We find a relation between a cubic hypersurface $Y$ and its Fano variety of lines $F(Y)$ in the Grothendieck ring of varieties. We prove that if the class of an affine line is not a zero-divisor in the Grothendieck ring of varieties, then Fano variety of lines on a smooth rational cubic fourfold is birational to a Hilbert scheme of two points on a K3 surface; in particular, general cubic fourfold is irrational.

Exceptional collections of line bundles on the Beauville surface

We construct quasi-phantom admissible subcategories in the derived category of coherent sheaves on the Beauville surface $S$. These quasi-phantoms subcategories appear as right orthogonals to subcategories generated by exceptional collections of maximal possible length 4 on $S$. We prove that there are exactly 6 exceptional collections consisting of line bundles (up to a twist) and these collections are spires of two helices.

Minifolds and Phantoms

A minifold is a smooth projective $n$-dimensional variety such that its bounded derived category of coherent sheaves $\D^b(X)$ admits a semi-orthogonal decomposition into an exceptional collection of $n+1$ exceptional objects. In this paper we classify minifolds of dimension $n \leq 4$. We conjecture that the derived category of fake projective spaces have a similar semi-orthogonal decomposition into a collection of $n+1$ exceptional objects and a category with vanishing Hochschild homology. We prove this for fake projective planes with non-abelian automorphism group. We construct new examples of phantom categories with both Hochschild homology and Grothendieck group vanishing.

Minkowski Polynomials and Mutations

Given a Laurent polynomial f, one can form the period of f: this is a function of one complex variable that plays an important role in mirror symmetry for Fano manifolds. Mutations are a particular class of birational transformations acting on Laurent polynomials in two variables; they preserve the period and are closely connected with cluster algebras. We propose a higher-dimensional analog of mutation acting on Laurent polynomials f in n variables. In particular we give a combinatorial description of mutation acting on the Newton polytope P of f, and use this to establish many basic facts about mutations. Mutations can be understood combinatorially in terms of Minkowski rearrangements of slices of P, or in terms of piecewise-linear transformations acting on the dual polytope P^* (much like cluster transformations). Mutations map Fano polytopes to Fano polytopes, preserve the Ehrhart series of the dual polytope, and preserve the period of f. Finally we use our results to show that Minkowski polynomials, which are a family of Laurent polynomials that give mirror partners to many three-dimensional Fano manifolds, are connected by a sequence of mutations if and only if they have the same period.
