Cosmological Bound on the QCD Axion Mass, Redux

We revisit the joint constraints in the mixed hot dark matter scenario in which both thermally produced QCD axions and relic neutrinos are present. Upon recomputing the cosmological axion abundance via recent advances in the literature, we improve the state-of-the-art analyses and provide updated bounds on axion and neutrino masses. By avoiding approximate methods, such as the instantaneous decoupling approximation, and limitations due to the limited validity of the perturbative approach in QCD that forced to artificially divide the constraints from the axion-pion and the axion-gluon production channels, we find robust and self-consistent limits. We investigate the two most popular axion frameworks: KSVZ and DFSZ. From Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) light element abundances data we find for the KSVZ axion $ΔN_{\rm eff}<0.31$ and an axion mass bound $m_a < 0.53 $ eV (i.e., a bound on the axion decay constant $f_a > 1.07 \times 10^7$ GeV) both at $95\%$ CL. These BBN bounds are improved to $ΔN_{\rm eff}<0.14$ and $m_a< 0.16$ eV ($f_a > 3.56 \times 10^7$ GeV) if a prior on the baryon energy density from Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data is assumed. When instead considering cosmological observations from the CMB temperature, polarization and lensing from the Planck satellite combined with large scale structure data we find $ΔN_{\rm eff}<0.23$, $m_a< 0.28$ eV ($f_a > 2.02 \times 10^7$ GeV) and $\sum m_ν< 0.16$ eV at $95\%$ CL. This corresponds approximately to a factor of $5$ improvement in the axion mass bound with respect to the existing limits. Very similar results are obtained for the DFSZ axion. We also forecast upcoming observations from future CMB and galaxy surveys, showing that they could reach percent level errors for $m_a\sim 1$ eV.

Dark gauge boson production from neutron stars via nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung

We discuss the dark gauge boson emission from neutron stars via nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung. Through the rigorous treatment of the effective field theory prescription and the thermal effect, we derive the relevant couplings of dark gauge bosons to hadrons in medium. As a specific example, the $U(1)_{\rm B-L}$ gauge boson scenario is chosen to investigate dark gauge boson emissivities during supernovae and cooling of young neutron stars. From the stellar cooling argument, we obtain the constraints on the $\rm B-L$ gauge coupling for given gauge boson masses in two observations: the duration of the supernova neutrino signal of SN1987A, and the inferred x-ray luminosity of the compact object in the remnant of SN1987A (NS1987A). In particular, the constraint from SN1987A on the $U(1)_{\rm B-L}$ gauge boson scenario is revisited. The excluded gauge coupling due to the emission of transverse polarizations is an order of magnitude enhanced compared to the previous derivation. There is also a newly excluded parameter space due to the emission of longitudinal polarizations.

Flavor Violating Axions in the Early Universe

Flavor violating axion couplings can be in action before recombination, and they can fill the early universe with an additional radiation component. Working within a model-independent framework, we consider an effective field theory for the axion field and quantify axion production. Current cosmological data exclude already a fraction of the available parameter space, and the bounds will improve significantly with future CMB-S4 surveys. Remarkably, we find that future cosmological bounds will be comparable or even stronger than the ones obtained in our terrestrial laboratories.

Thermal axion production at low temperatures: a smooth treatment of the QCD phase transition

We study thermal axion production around the confinement scale. At higher temperatures, we extend current calculations to account for the masses of heavy quarks, whereas we quantify production via hadron scattering at lower temperatures. Matching our results between the two opposite regimes provides us with a continuous axion production rate across the QCD phase transition. We employ such a rate to quantify the axion contribution to the effective number of neutrino species.

Axion and neutrino mass from a hidden gauge symmetry model

We propose a model of dark sector described by gauged hidden $U(1)_H$ symmetry in which neutrino masses are generated at one-loop level and axion is induced by assigning Peccei-Quinn charge to fermions in dark sector relevantly. Then our scenario connects exotic fermion mass generation, neutrino mass matrix and axion through scalar fields associated with $U(1)_H$ and Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking. We investigate neutrino mass formula, lepton flavor violation, anomalous magnetic moment of muon, dark matter relic density and axion couplings, which are originated from interactions among our dark sector and the standard model particles.

Gamma-ray spectral modulations induced by photon-ALP-dark photon oscillations

Recently it has been noticed that the Fermi-LAT data of gamma-rays from some galactic pulsars and supernova remnants reveal spectral modulations that might be explained by the conversion of photons to ALPs (axion-like particles) induced by the conventional ALP coupling to photon in the presence of galactic magnetic fields. However the corresponding ALP mass and coupling are in a severe tension with the observational constraints from CAST, SN1987A, and other gamma-ray observations. Motivated by this, we examine an alternative possibility that those spectral modulations are explained by other type of ALP coupling involving both the ordinary photon and a massless dark photon, when nonzero background dark photon gauge fields are assumed. We find that our scheme results in oscillations among the photon, ALP, and dark photon, which can explain the gamma-ray spectral modulations of galactic pulsars or supernova remnants, while satisfying the known observational constraints.

Mini Force: the (B-L) + xY gauge interaction with a light mediator

The relevant phenomenology and the best search schemes of a subelectroweak-scale gauge boson can be vastly different depending on its coupling. For instance, the rare decay into a light gauge boson and the high precision parity test can be sensitive if it has an axial coupling. The minimal gauge extension of the standard model with the U(1)_{B-L + xY} requires only three right-handed neutrinos, well-suited to the current neutrino mass and mixing data, and no additional exotic matter fields. We study the light gauge boson of this symmetry in detail including its axial coupling property from the hypercharge shift.

Natural inflation with multiple sub-Planckian axions

We extend the Kim-Nilles-Peloso (KNP) alignment mechanism for natural inflation to models with $N>2$ axions, which obtains a super-Planckian effective axion decay constant $f_{\textrm{eff}}\gg M_{Pl}$ through an alignment of the anomaly coefficients of multiple axions having sub-Planckian fundamental decay constants $f_0\ll M_{Pl}$. The original version of the KNP mechanism realized with two axions requires that some of the anomaly coefficients should be of the order of $f_{\textrm{eff}}/f_0$, which would be uncomfortably large if $f_{\rm eff}/f_0 \gtrsim {\cal O}(100)$ as suggested by the recent BICEP2 results. We note that the KNP mechanism can be realized with the anomaly coefficients of $\mathcal{O}(1)$ if the number of axions $N$ is large as $N\ln N\gtrsim 2\ln (f_{\textrm{eff}}/f_0)$, in which case the effective decay constant can be enhanced as $f_{\rm eff}/f_0 \sim \sqrt{N !}\,n^{N-1}$ for $n$ denoting the typical size of the integer-valued anomaly coefficients. Comparing to the other multiple axion scenario, the N-flation scenario which requires $N \sim f_{\textrm{eff}}^2/f_0^2$, the KNP mechanism has a virtue of not invoking to a too large number of axions, although it requires a specific alignment of the anomaly coefficients, which can be achieved with a probability of ${\cal O}(f_0/f_{\rm eff})$ under a random choice of the anomaly coefficients. We also present a simple model realizing a multiple axion monodromy along the inflaton direction.
