Gamma-ray spectral modulations induced by photon-ALP-dark photon oscillations

Recently it has been noticed that the Fermi-LAT data of gamma-rays from some galactic pulsars and supernova remnants reveal spectral modulations that might be explained by the conversion of photons to ALPs (axion-like particles) induced by the conventional ALP coupling to photon in the presence of galactic magnetic fields. However the corresponding ALP mass and coupling are in a severe tension with the observational constraints from CAST, SN1987A, and other gamma-ray observations. Motivated by this, we examine an alternative possibility that those spectral modulations are explained by other type of ALP coupling involving both the ordinary photon and a massless dark photon, when nonzero background dark photon gauge fields are assumed. We find that our scheme results in oscillations among the photon, ALP, and dark photon, which can explain the gamma-ray spectral modulations of galactic pulsars or supernova remnants, while satisfying the known observational constraints.

Constraints on Relaxion Windows

We examine the low energy phenomenology of the relaxion solution to the weak scale hierarchy problem. Assuming that the Hubble friction is responsible for a dissipation of the relaxion energy, we identify the cosmological relaxion window which corresponds to the parameter region compatible with a given value of the acceptable number of inflationary $e$-foldings. We then discuss a variety of observational constraints on the relaxion window, including those from astrophysical and cosmological considerations. We find that majority of the parameter space with a relaxion mass $m_ϕ\gtrsim 100$ eV or a relaxion decay constant $f\lesssim 10^7$ GeV is excluded by existing constraints. There is an interesting parameter region with $m_ϕ\sim \,0.2-10$ GeV and $f\sim\, {\rm few}-200$ TeV, which is allowed by existing constraints, but can be probed soon by future beam dump experiments such as the SHiP experiment, or by improved EDM experiments.

750 GeV diphoton resonance and electric dipole moments

We examine the implication of the recently observed 750 GeV diphoton excess for the electric dipole moments of the neutron and electron. If the excess is due to a spin zero resonance which couples to photons and gluons through the loops of massive vector-like fermions, the resulting neutron electric dipole moment can be comparable to the present experimental bound if the CP-violating angle α in the underlying new physics is of O(10^{-1}). An electron EDM comparable to the present bound can be achieved through a mixing between the 750 GeV resonance and the Standard Model Higgs boson, if the mixing angle itself for an approximately pseudoscalar resonance, or the mixing angle times the CP-violating angle α for an approximately scalar resonance, is of O(10^{-3}). For the case that the 750 GeV resonance corresponds to a composite pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson formed by a QCD-like hypercolor dynamics confining at Λ_HC, the resulting neutron EDM can be estimated with α~ (750 GeV / Λ_HC)^2θ_HC, where θ_HC is the hypercolor vacuum angle.

Realizing the relaxion from multiple axions and its UV completion with high scale supersymmetry

We discuss a scheme to implement the relaxion solution to the hierarchy problem with multiple axions, and present a UV-completed model realizing the scheme. All of the $N$ axions in our model are periodic with a similar decay constant $f$ well below the Planck scale. In the limit $N\gg 1$, the relaxion $ϕ$ corresponds to an exponentially long multi-helical flat direction which is shaped by a series of mass mixing between nearby axions in the compact field space of $N$ axions. With the length of flat direction given by $Δϕ=2πf_{\rm eff} \sim e^{ξN} f$ for $ξ={\cal O}(1)$, both the scalar potential driving the evolution of $ϕ$ during the inflationary epoch and the $ϕ$-dependent Higgs boson mass vary with an exponentially large periodicity of ${\cal O}(f_{\rm eff})$, while the back reaction potential stabilizing the relaxion has a periodicity of ${\cal O}( f)$. A natural UV completion of our scheme can be found in high scale or (mini) split supersymmetry (SUSY) scenario with the axion scales generated by SUSY breaking as $f\sim \sqrt{m_{\rm SUSY}M_*}$, where the soft SUSY breaking scalar mass $m_{\rm SUSY}$ can be well above the weak scale, and the fundamental scale $M_*$ can be identified as the Planck scale or the GUT scale.

Diluting the inflationary axion fluctuation by a stronger QCD in the early Universe

We propose a new mechanism to suppress the axion isocurvature perturbation, while producing the right amount of axion dark matter, within the framework of supersymmetric axion models with the axion scale induced by supersymmetry breaking. The mechanism involves an intermediate phase transition to generate the Higgs μ-parameter, before which the weak scale is comparable to the axion scale and the resulting stronger QCD yields an axion mass heavier than the Hubble scale over a certain period. Combined with that the Hubble-induced axion scale during the primordial inflation is well above the intermediate axion scale at present, the stronger QCD in the early Universe suppresses the axion fluctuation to be small enough even when the inflationary Hubble scale saturates the current upper bound, while generating an axion misalignment angle of order unity.

Primordial perturbations from dilaton-induced gauge fields

We study the primordial scalar and tensor perturbations in inflation scenario involving a spectator dilaton field. In our setup, the rolling spectator dilaton causes a tachyonic instability of gauge fields, leading to a copious production of gauge fields in the superhorizon regime, which generates additional scalar and tensor perturbations through gravitational interactions. Our prime concern is the possibility to enhance the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ relative to the standard result, while satisfying the observational constraints. To this end, we allow the dilaton field to be stabilized before the end of inflation, but after the CMB scales exit the horizon. We show that for the inflaton slow roll parameter $ε\gtrsim 10^{-3}$, the tensor-to-scalar ratio in our setup can be enhanced only by a factor of ${\cal O}(1)$ compared to the standard result. On the other hand, for smaller $ε$ corresponding to a lower inflation energy scale, a much bigger enhancement can be achieved, so that our setup can give rise to an observably large $r\gtrsim 10^{-2}$ even when $ε\ll 10^{-3}$. The tensor perturbation sourced by the spectator dilaton can have a strong scale dependence, and is generically red-tilted. We also discuss a specific model to realize our scenario, and identify the parameter region giving an observably large $r$ for relatively low inflation energy scales.

Natural inflation with multiple sub-Planckian axions

We extend the Kim-Nilles-Peloso (KNP) alignment mechanism for natural inflation to models with $N>2$ axions, which obtains a super-Planckian effective axion decay constant $f_{\textrm{eff}}\gg M_{Pl}$ through an alignment of the anomaly coefficients of multiple axions having sub-Planckian fundamental decay constants $f_0\ll M_{Pl}$. The original version of the KNP mechanism realized with two axions requires that some of the anomaly coefficients should be of the order of $f_{\textrm{eff}}/f_0$, which would be uncomfortably large if $f_{\rm eff}/f_0 \gtrsim {\cal O}(100)$ as suggested by the recent BICEP2 results. We note that the KNP mechanism can be realized with the anomaly coefficients of $\mathcal{O}(1)$ if the number of axions $N$ is large as $N\ln N\gtrsim 2\ln (f_{\textrm{eff}}/f_0)$, in which case the effective decay constant can be enhanced as $f_{\rm eff}/f_0 \sim \sqrt{N !}\,n^{N-1}$ for $n$ denoting the typical size of the integer-valued anomaly coefficients. Comparing to the other multiple axion scenario, the N-flation scenario which requires $N \sim f_{\textrm{eff}}^2/f_0^2$, the KNP mechanism has a virtue of not invoking to a too large number of axions, although it requires a specific alignment of the anomaly coefficients, which can be achieved with a probability of ${\cal O}(f_0/f_{\rm eff})$ under a random choice of the anomaly coefficients. We also present a simple model realizing a multiple axion monodromy along the inflaton direction.

String theoretic QCD axions in the light of PLANCK and BICEP2

The QCD axion solving the strong CP problem may originate from antisymmetric tensor gauge fields in compactified string theory, with a decay constant around the GUT scale. Such possibility appears to be ruled out now by the detection of tensor modes by BICEP2 and the PLANCK constraints on isocurvature density perturbations. A more interesting and still viable possibility is that the string theoretic QCD axion is charged under an anomalous U(1)_A gauge symmetry. In such case, the axion decay constant can be much lower than the GUT scale if moduli are stabilized near the point of vanishing Fayet-Illiopoulos term, and U(1)_A-charged matter fields get a vacuum value far below the GUT scale due to a tachyonic SUSY breaking scalar mass. We examine the symmetry breaking pattern of such models during the inflationary epoch with the Hubble expansion rate 10^{14} GeV, and identify the range of the QCD axion decay constant, as well as the corresponding relic axion abundance, consistent with known cosmological constraints. In addition to the case that the PQ symmetry is restored during inflation, there are other viable scenarios, including that the PQ symmetry is broken during inflation at high scales around 10^{16}-10^{17} GeV due to a large Hubble-induced tachyonic scalar mass from the U(1)_A D-term, while the present axion scale is in the range 10^{9}-5\times 10^{13} GeV, where the present value larger than 10^{12} GeV requires a fine-tuning of the axion misalignment angle. We also discuss the implications of our results for the size of SUSY breaking soft masses.

Higgs mixing and diphoton rate enhancement in NMSSM models

We study the implications of the LHC Higgs signals on the Higgs mixing in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM). The Higgs couplings can depart from their values in the standard model (SM) due to mixing effects. However the Higgs signal rate in the WW and ZZ channels can remain close to the SM values, as observed at the LHC, even if the SM-like Higgs boson with a mass near 125 GeV has a large singlet component. This allows to get a sizable enhancement in the Higgs to diphoton rate through the charged-higgsino loop contribution, as well as a sizable reduction of the Higgs to bb and tautau rates through the mixing effects, with little deviation in the WW and ZZ signal rates from the SM prediction. We find that an enhancement of diphoton signals by a factor of 1.5 or more, and also a reduction of bb and tautau signals by a factor of 0.5, can be obtained in the region of parameter space consistent with the constraints on the higgsino mass parameter and the singlet coupling to the Higgs doublets, which determine the Higgs mixing.

Higgs phenomenology in the Peccei-Quinn invariant NMSSM

We study the Higgs phenomenology in the Peccei-Quinn invariant NMSSM (PQ-NMSSM) where the low energy mass parameters of the singlet superfield are induced by a spontaneous breakdown of the Peccei-Quinn symmetry. In the generic NMSSM, scalar mixing among CP-even Higgs bosons is constrained by the observed properties of the SM-like Higgs boson, as well as by the LEP bound on the chargino mass and the perturbativity bound on the singlet Yukawa coupling. In the minimal PQ-NMSSM, scalar mixing is further constrained due to the presence of a light singlino-like neutralino. It is noticed that the $2σ$ excess of the LEP $Zb\bar b$ events at $m_{b\bar b}\simeq$ 98 GeV can be explained by a singlet-like 98 GeV Higgs boson in the minimal PQ-NMSSM with low $\tanβ$, stops around or below 1 TeV, and light doublet-higgsinos around the weak scale.

Cosmological moduli problem in large volume scenario and thermal inflation

We show that in a large volume scenario of type IIB string or F-theory compactifications, single thermal inflation provides only a partial solution to the cosmological problem of the light volume modulus. We then clarify the conditions for double thermal inflation, being a simple extension of the usual single thermal inflation scenario, to solve the cosmological moduli problem in the case of relatively light moduli masses. Using a specific example, we demonstrate that double thermal inflation can be realized in large volume scenario in a natural manner, and the problem of the light volume modulus can be solved for the whole relevant mass range. We also find that right amount of baryon asymmetry and dark matter can be obtained via a late-time Affleck-Dine mechanism and the decays of the visible sector NLSP to flatino LSP.

Dark radiation and small-scale structure problems with decaying particles

Although the standard ΛCDM model describes the cosmic microwave background radiation and the large scale structure of the Universe with great success, it has some tensions with observations in the effective number of neutrino species (dark radiation) and the number of small scale structures (overabundance problem). Here we propose a scenario which can relax these tensions by producing both dark matter and dark radiation by late decays of heavy particle. Thanks to the generation mechanism, dark matters are rather warm so that the small-scale structure problem is resolved. This scenario can be naturally realized in supersymmetric axion model, in which axions produced by saxion decays provide dark radiation, while axinos from saxion decays form warm dark matter. We identify a parameter region of supersymmetric axion model satisfying all known cosmological constraints.

Peccei-Quinn NMSSM in the light of 125 GeV Higgs

We study the phenomenology of the Peccei-Quinn invariant extension of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM) in view of the recent discovery of a 125 GeV Higgs boson. The minimal model having no quadratic and cubic terms of the NMSSM singlet field predicts a light singlino-like lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP). The model is strongly constrained by the Higgs invisible decay and the dark matter characteristic of the LSP, while some constraints can be relaxed by assuming that the saxion, the CP-even companion of the axion in the Peccei-Quinn sector, causes a late-time entropy production diluting the thermal LSP density. The collider signal of the model contains multi-jet and $h/W/Z$ plus missing energy, which can be discovered in the early stage of the 14 TeV LHC running.

Effective interactions of axion supermultiplet and thermal production of axino dark matter

We discuss the effective interactions of axion supermultiplet, which might be important for analyzing the cosmological aspect of supersymmetric axion model. Related to axino cosmology, it is stressed that three seemingly similar but basically different quantities, the Wilsonian axino-gluino-gluon coupling, the 1PI axino-gluino-gluon amplitude, and the PQ anomaly coefficient, should be carefully distinguished from each other for correct analysis of the thermal production of axinos in the early Universe. It is then noticed that the 1PI axino-gluino-gluon amplitude at energy scale p in the range M_Φ< p < v_{PQ} is suppressed by (M_Φ^2)/(p^2) in addition to the well-known suppression by p/(16π^2 v_{PQ}), where M_Φis the mass of the heaviest PQ-charged and gauge-charged matter supermultiplet in the model, which can be well below the PQ scale v_{PQ}. As a result, axino production at temperature T>M_Φis dominated by the production by matter supermultiplet, not by the production by gauge supermultiplet. Still the axino production rate is greatly reduced if M_Φ<< v_{PQ}, which would make the subsequent cosmology significantly altered. This would be most notable in the supersymmetric DFSZ model in which M_Φcorresponds to the Higgsino mass which is around the weak scale, however a similar reduction is possible in the KSVZ model also. We evaluate the relic axino density for both the DFSZ and KSVZ models while including the axino production in the processes involving the heaviest PQ-charged and gauge-charged matter supermultiplet.

Measuring the Higgs boson mass with transverse mass variables

We provide a comparative study of the Higgs boson mass measurements based on two approaches to the dileptonic decay of W bosons produced by the Higgs boson decay, one using the kinematic variable M_T^true and the other using the M_T2-assisted on-shell reconstruction of the invisible neutrino momenta. We find that these two approaches can determine the Higgs boson mass with a similar accuracy for both of the two main production mechanisms of the SM Higgs boson at the LHC, i.e. the gluon-gluon fusion and the weak vector boson fusion. We also notice that the Higgs signal distribution for the gluon-gluon fusion becomes narrower under the M_T2 cut, while the corresponding background distribution becomes flatter, indicating that one might be able to reduce the systematic uncertainties of mass measurement with an appropriate M_T2 cut.

Mixed Mediation of Supersymmetry Breaking with Anomalous U(1) Gauge Symmetry

Models with anomalous U(1) gauge symmetry contain various superfields which can have nonzero supersymmetry breaking auxiliary components providing the origin of soft terms in the visible sector, e.g. the U(1) vector superfield, the modulus or dilaton superfield implementing the Green-Schwarz anomaly cancellation mechanism, U(1)-charged but standard model singlet matter superfield required to cancel the Fayet-Iliopoulos term, and finally the supergravity multiplet. We examine the relative strength between these supersymmetry breaking components in a simple class of models, and find that various different mixed mediations of supersymmetry breaking, involving the modulus, gauge, anomaly and D-term mediations, can be realized depending upon the characteristics of D-flat directions and how those D-flat directions are stabilized with a vanishing cosmological constant. We identify two parameters which represent such properties and thus characterize how the various mediations are mixed. We also discuss the moduli stabilization and soft terms in a variant of KKLT scenario, in which the visible sector Kähler modulus is stabilized by the D-term potential of anomalous U(1) gauge symmetry.

Reducing combinatorial uncertainties: A new technique based on MT2 variables

We propose a new method to resolve combinatorial ambiguities in hadron collider events involving two invisible particles in the final state. This method is based on the kinematic variable MT2 and on the MT2-assisted-on-shell reconstruction of invisible momenta, that are reformulated as `test' variables Ti of the correct combination against the incorrect ones. We show how the efficiency of the single Ti in providing the correct answer can be systematically improved by combining the different Ti and/or by introducing cuts on suitable, combination-insensitive kinematic variables. We illustrate our whole approach in the specific example of top anti-top production, followed by a leptonic decay of the W on both sides. However, by construction, our method is also directly applicable to many topologies of interest for new physics, in particular events producing a pair of undetected particles, that are potential dark-matter candidates. We finally emphasize that our method is apt to several generalizations, that we outline in the last sections of the paper.

The mu-problem and axion in gauge mediation

We revisit the idea of generating the Higgs mu parameter through a spontaneously broken Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry in gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking scenario. For the messenger scale of gauge mediation higher than the PQ scale, the setup naturally generates mu ~ m_soft and the Higgs soft parameter B \leq O(m_soft) with the CP phase of B aligned to the phase of gaugino masses, while giving the PQ scale v_PQ ~ \surd (m_soft Λ), where m_soft denote the gauge-mediated gaugino or sfermion masses and Λ is the cutoff scale which can be identified as the Planck scale or the GUT scale. The PQ sector of the model results in distinctive cosmology including a late thermal inflation. We discuss the issue of dark matter and baryogenesis in the resulting thermal inflation scenario, and find that a right amount of gravitino dark matter can be produced together with a successful Affleck-Dine leptogenesis, when the gravitino mass m_{3/2} = O(100) keV.

Gauge Threshold Corrections in Warped Geometry

We discuss the Kaluza-Klein threshold correction to low energy gauge couplings in theories with warped extra-dimension, which might be crucial for the gauge coupling unification when the warping is sizable. Explicit expressions of one-loop thresholds are derived for generic 5D gauge theory on a slice of AdS_5, where some of the bulk gauge symmetries are broken by orbifold boundary conditions and/or by bulk Higgs vacuum values. Effects of the mass mixing between the bulk fields with different orbifold parities are included as such mixing is required in some class of realistic warped unification models.

Sparticle masses from transverse mass kinks at the LHC: the case of Yukawa-unified SUSY GUTs

We explore, in a concrete example, to which extent new particle mass determinations are practicable with LHC data. Our chosen example is that of Yukawa-unified SUSY GUTs, whose viability has been recently studied for two general patterns of soft SUSY-breaking terms. We note that both patterns of SUSY spectra do not admit long decay chains, which would make it possible to determine the masses of the SUSY particles involved using endpoints or mass relations. We thus take the so-called mT2-kink method as our key strategy, since it does not rely on the presence of long decay chains. We then discuss a procedure allowing to determine the masses of the gluino, of the lightest chargino as well as of the first two neutralinos and, for the scenario where a stop is lighter than the gluino, the mass of the light stop too. Our worked example of Yukawa-unified SUSY GUTs may offer a useful playground for dealing with other theories which predict similar patterns of SUSY spectra.

Mass and Spin Measurement with M_T2 and MAOS Momentum

We discuss the M_T2-kink method to determine the masses of both the dark matter WIMP and its mother particle produced at the LHC. We then introduce a new kinematic variable, the M_T2-Assisted-On-Shell (MAOS) momentum, that provides a systematic approximation to the invisible particle momenta in hadron collider events producing a pair of invisible particles, and apply it to certain SUSY processes and their UED equivalents to determine the spin of gluino/KK-gluon and of slepton/KK-lepton. An application of the MAOS momentum to the SM Higgs mass measurement is briefly discussed also.

String theoretic QCD axion with stabilized saxion and the pattern of supersymmetry breaking

String theoretic axion is a prime candidate for the QCD axion solving the strong CP problem. For a successful realization of the QCD axion in string theory, one needs to stabilize moduli including the scalar partner (saxion) of the QCD axion, while keeping the QCD axion unfixed until the low energy QCD instanton effects are turned on. We note that a simple generalization of KKLT moduli stabilization provides such set-up realizing the axion solution to the strong CP problem. Although some details of moduli stabilization are different from the original KKLT scenario, this set-up leads to the mirage mediation pattern of soft SUSY breaking terms as in the KKLT case, preserving flavor and CP as a consequence of approximate scaling and axionic shift symmetries. The set-up also gives an interesting pattern of moduli masses which might avoid the cosmological moduli, gravitino and axion problems.

Supersymmetry Breaking in Warped Geometry

We examine the soft supersymmetry breaking parameters in supersymmetric theories on a slice of AdS_5 which generate the hierarchical Yukawa couplings by dynamically localizing the bulk matter fields in extra dimension. Such models can be regarded as the AdS dual of the recently studied 4-dimensional models which contain a supersymmetric CFT to generate the hierarchical Yukawa couplings. In such models, if supersymmetry breaking is mediated by the bulk radion superfield and/or some brane chiral superfields, potentially dangerous flavor-violating soft parameters can be naturally suppressed, thereby avoiding the SUSY flavor problem. We present some models of radion-dominated supersymmetry breaking which yield a highly predictive form of soft parameters in this framework.

We introduce a new confining force (μ-color) at TeV scale to dynamically generate a supersymmetry preserving mass scale which would replace the μparameter in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). We discuss the Higgs phenomenology and also the pattern of soft supersymmetry breaking parameters allowing the correct electroweak symmetry breaking within the μ-color model, which have quite distinctive features from the MSSM and also from other generalizations of the MSSM.

Cosmology of Light Moduli

In string/M-theory with a large compactification radius, some axion-like moduli can be much lighter than the gravitino. Generic moduli in gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking models also have a mass far below the weak scale. Motivated by these, we examine the cosmological implications of light moduli for the mass range from the weak scale to an extremely small scale of order 10^{-26} eV, and obtain an upper bound on the initial moduli misalignment for both cases with and without a late entropy production.

Axions and the Strong CP Problem in M-theory

We examine the possibility that the strong CP problem is solved by string-theoretic axions in strong-coupling limit of the E_8 x E_8 heterotic string theory (M-theory). We first discuss some generic features of gauge kinetic functions in compactified M-theory, and examine in detail the axion potential induced by the explicit breakings other than the QCD anomaly of the non-linear U(1)_{PQ} symmetries of string-theoretic axions. It is argued based on supersymmetry and discrete gauge symmetries that if the compactification radius is large enough, there can be a U(1)_{PQ}-symmetry whose breaking other than the QCD anomaly, whatever its microscopic origin is, is suppressed enough for the axion mechanism to work. Phenomenological viability of such a large radius crucially depends upon the quantized coefficients in gauge kinetic functions. We note that the large radius required for the axion mechanism is viable only in a limited class of models. For instance, for compactifications on a smooth Calabi-Yau manifold with a vanishing second E_8 field strength, it is viable only when the quantized flux of the antisymmetric tensor field in M-theory has a minimal nonzero value. It is also stressed that this large compactification radius allows the QCD axion in M-theory to be cosmologically viable in the presence of a late time entropy production.

Axion Cosmology with a Stronger QCD in the Early Universe

We examine in the context of supersymmetric models whether the usual cosmological upper bound on the axion decay constant can be relaxed by assuming a period of stronger QCD in the early universe. By evaluating the axion potential in the early universe and also taking into account the dilaton potential energy, it is argued that a stronger QCD is not useful for raising up the bound.

Supersymmetry Hierarchy Problems and Anomalous Horizontal U(1) Symmetry

It is suggested that various hierarchy problems in supersymmetric standard model, i.e. the Yukawa hierarchies, the μproblem, and the suppression of dangerous baryon and/or lepton number (B/L) violating couplings, are resolved altogether in the framework of horizontal U(1) symmetry whose spontaneous breaking results in the appearance of one expansion parameter (the Cabibbo angle). Within a reasonable range of U(1) charges, there exist a few models compatible with experiments. The specific sizes of B/L violating couplings of these models are calculated and several phenomenological consequences are discussed.

An Automatic Invisible Axion In The SUSY Preon Model

It is shown that the recently proposed preon model which provides a unified origin of the diverse mass scale and an explanation of family replication as well as of inter-family mass-hierarchy, possesses a Peccei-Quinn symmetry whose spontaneous breaking leads to an automatic invisible axion. Existence of the PQ-symmetry is simply a consequence of supersymmetry and requirement of minimality in the field-content and interactions, which propose that the lagrangian should possess only those terms which are dictated by the gauge principle and no others. In addition to the axion, the model also generates two superlight Goldstone bosons and their superpartners which are cosmologically safe.

Small Flavor Conserving CP Violation in Superstring Models

It is well known that supersymmetric models allow new sources for CP violation that arise from soft supersymmetry breaking terms. If unsuppressed, these new CP-violating phases would give too large a neutron electric dipole moment. We discuss a mechanism for suppressing SUSY phases in string-inspired supergravity models in which supersymmetry is assumed to be broken by the auxiliary components of the dilaton and moduli superfields. Small SUSY phases in string-inspired supergravity

In supersymmetric models, there are new CP violating phases which, if unsuppressed, would give a too large neutron electric dipole moment. We examine the possibility of small SUSY phases in string-inspired supergravity models in which supersymmetry is broken by the auxiliary components of the dilaton and moduli superfields. It is found that the SUSY phases can be suppressed by a small factor governing the breakdown of the approximate Peccei Quinn symmetries nonlinearly realized for the moduli superfields that participate in supersymmetry breaking. In many cases, the symmetry breaking factors are exponentially small for moderately large values of the moduli, leading to small phase values in a natural way.

Is CP a Gauge Symmetry?

We suggest here that CP is a discrete {\it gauge} symmetry, and is therefore not violated by quantum gravity. We show that four dimensional CP can arise as a discrete gauge symmetry in theories with dimensional compactification, if the original number of Minkowski dimensions equals $8k+1$, $8k+2$ or $8k+3$, and if there are certain restrictions on the gauge group; these conditions are met by superstrings. CP may then be broken spontaneously below $10^9$ GeV, explaining the observed CP violation in the kaon system without inducing a large EDMN. We discuss the phenomenology of such models, as well as the peculiar nature of cosmic ``CP strings'' which could be produced at the compactification scale. Such strings have the curious property that a particle carried around the string is turned into its CP conjugate. A single CP string renders four dimensional spacetime nonorientable.
