Regret analysis of the Piyavskii-Shubert algorithm for global Lipschitz optimization

We consider the problem of maximizing a non-concave Lipschitz multivariate function over a compact domain by sequentially querying its (possibly perturbed) values. We study a natural algorithm designed originally by Piyavskii and Shubert in 1972, for which we prove new bounds on the number of evaluations of the function needed to reach or certify a given optimization accuracy. Our analysis uses a bandit-optimization viewpoint and solves an open problem from Hansen et al.\ (1991) by bounding the number of evaluations to certify a given accuracy with a near-optimal sum of packing numbers.

The sample complexity of level set approximation

We study the problem of approximating the level set of an unknown function by sequentially querying its values. We introduce a family of algorithms called Bisect and Approximate through which we reduce the level set approximation problem to a local function approximation problem. We then show how this approach leads to rate-optimal sample complexity guarantees for H{ö}lder functions, and we investigate how such rates improve when additional smoothness or other structural assumptions hold true.

A Chaining Algorithm for Online Nonparametric Regression

We consider the problem of online nonparametric regression with arbitrary deterministic sequences. Using ideas from the chaining technique, we design an algorithm that achieves a Dudley-type regret bound similar to the one obtained in a non-constructive fashion by Rakhlin and Sridharan (2014). Our regret bound is expressed in terms of the metric entropy in the sup norm, which yields optimal guarantees when the metric and sequential entropies are of the same order of magnitude. In particular our algorithm is the first one that achieves optimal rates for online regression over H{ö}lder balls. In addition we show for this example how to adapt our chaining algorithm to get a reasonable computational efficiency with similar regret guarantees (up to a log factor).

Sparsity regret bounds for individual sequences in online linear regression

We consider the problem of online linear regression on arbitrary deterministic sequences when the ambient dimension d can be much larger than the number of time rounds T. We introduce the notion of sparsity regret bound, which is a deterministic online counterpart of recent risk bounds derived in the stochastic setting under a sparsity scenario. We prove such regret bounds for an online-learning algorithm called SeqSEW and based on exponential weighting and data-driven truncation. In a second part we apply a parameter-free version of this algorithm to the stochastic setting (regression model with random design). This yields risk bounds of the same flavor as in Dalalyan and Tsybakov (2011) but which solve two questions left open therein. In particular our risk bounds are adaptive (up to a logarithmic factor) to the unknown variance of the noise if the latter is Gaussian. We also address the regression model with fixed design.
