The dynamics of complex box mappings

In holomorphic dynamics, complex box mappings arise as first return maps to well-chosen domains. They are a generalization of polynomial-like mapping, where the domain of the return map can have infinitely many components. They turned out to be extremely useful in tackling diverse problems. The purpose of this paper is: -To illustrate some pathologies that can occur when a complex box mapping is not induced by a globally defined map and when its domain has infinitely many components, and to give conditions to avoid these issues. -To show that once one has a box mapping for a rational map, these conditions can be assumed to hold in a very natural setting. Thus we call such complex box mappings dynamically natural. -Many results in holomorphic dynamics rely on an interplay between combinatorial and analytic techniques: (*)the Enhanced Nest by Kozlovski-Shen-van Strien; (*)the Covering Lemma by Kahn-Lyubich; (*)the QC-Criterion, the Spreading Principle. The purpose of this paper is to make these tools more accessible so that they can be used as a 'black box', so one does not have to redo the proofs in new settings. -To give an intuitive, but also rather detailed, outline of the proof of the following results by Kozlovski-van Strien for non-renormalizable dynamically natural box mappings: (*)puzzle pieces shrink to points; (*)topologically conjugate non-renormalizable polynomials and box mappings are quasiconformally conjugate. -We prove the fundamental ergodic properties for dynamically natural box mappings. This leads to some necessary conditions for when such a box mapping supports a measurable invariant line field on its filled Julia set. These mappings are the analogues of Lattes maps in this setting. -We prove a version of Mane's Theorem for complex box mappings concerning expansion along orbits of points that avoid a neighborhood of the set of critical points.

Monotonicity of entropy and positively oriented transversality for families of interval maps

In this paper we will develop a very general approach which shows that critical relations of holomorphic maps on the complex plane unfold transversally in a positively oriented way. We will mainly illustrate this approach to obtain transversality for a wide class of one-parameter families of interval maps, for example maps with flat critical points, piecewise linear maps, maps with discontinuities but also for families of maps with complex analytic extensions such as certain polynomial-like maps.

Density of hyperbolicity for classes of real transcendental entire functions and circle maps

We prove density of hyperbolicity in spaces of (i) real transcendental entire functions, bounded on the real line, whose singular set is finite and real and (ii) transcendental self-maps of the punctured plane which preserve the circle and whose singular set (apart from zero and infinity) is contained in the circle. In particular, we prove density of hyperbolicity in the famous Arnol'd family of circle maps and its generalizations, and solve a number of other open problems for these functions, including three conjectures by de Melo, Salomão and Vargas. We also prove density of (real) hyperbolicity for certain families as in (i) but without the boundedness condition. Our results apply, in particular, when the functions in question have only finitely many critical points and asymptotic singularities, or when there are no asymptotic values and the degree of critical points is uniformly bounded.

Payoff Performance of Fictitious Play

We investigate how well continuous-time fictitious play in two-player games performs in terms of average payoff, particularly compared to Nash equilibrium payoff. We show that in many games, fictitious play outperforms Nash equilibrium on average or even at all times, and moreover that any game is linearly equivalent to one in which this is the case. Conversely, we provide conditions under which Nash equilibrium payoff dominates fictitious play payoff. A key step in our analysis is to show that fictitious play dynamics asymptotically converges the set of coarse correlated equilibria (a fact which is implicit in the literature).

Dynamics of Coupled Maps in Heterogeneous Random Networks

We study expanding circle maps interacting in a heterogeneous random network. Heterogeneity means that some nodes in the network are massively connected, while the remaining nodes are only poorly connected. We provide a probabilistic approach which enables us to describe the effective dynamics of the massively connected nodes when taking a weak interaction limit. More precisely, we show that for almost every random network and almost all initial conditions the high dimensional network governing the dynamics of the massively connected nodes can be reduced to a few macroscopic equations. Such reduction is intimately related to the ergodic properties of the expanding maps. This reduction allows one to explore the coherent properties of the network.

Monotonicity of entropy for real multimodal maps

In \cite{Mil}, Milnor posed the {\em Monotonicity Conjecture} that the set of parameters within a family of real multimodal polynomial interval maps, for which the topological entropy is constant, is connected. This conjecture was proved for quadratic by Milnor & Thurston \cite{MT} and for cubic maps by Milnor & Tresser, see \cite{MTr} and also \cite{DGMT}. In this paper we will prove the general case.

On stochastic stability of expanding circle maps with neutral fixed points

It is well-known that the Manneville-Pomeau map with a parabolic fixed point of the form $x\mapsto x+x^{1+α} \mod 1$ is stochastically stable for $α\ge 1$ and the limiting measure is the Dirac measure at the fixed point. In this paper we show that if $α\in (0,1)$ then it is also stochastically stable. Indeed, the stationary measure of the random map converges strongly to the absolutely continuous invariant measure for the deterministic system as the noise tends to zero.

Absence of line fields and Mane's theorem for non-recurrent transcendental functions

Let f be a transcendental meromorphic function. Suppose that the finite part of the postsingular set of f is bounded, that f has no recurrent critical points or wandering domains, and that the degree of pre-poles of f is uniformly bounded. Then we show that f supports no invariant line fields on its Julia set. We prove this by generalizing two results about rational functions to the transcendental setting: a theorem of Mane about the branching of iterated preimages of disks, and a theorem of McMullen regarding absence of invariant line fields for "measurably transitive" functions. Both our theorems extend results previously obtained by Graczyk, Kotus and Swiatek.

Local connectivity and quasi-conformal rigidity of non-renormalizable polynomials

We prove that topologically conjugate non-renormalizable polynomials are quasi-conformally conjugate. From this we derive that each such polynomial can be approximated by a hyperbolic polynomial. As a by product we prove that the Julia set of a non-renormalizable polynomials with only hyperbolic periodic points is locally connected, and the Branner-Hubbard conjecture. The main tools are the enhanced nest construction (developed in a previous joint paper with Weixiao Shen) and a lemma of Kahn and Lyubich (for which we give an elementary proof in the real case).

Local connectivity of the Julia set of real polynomials

One of the main questions in the field of complex dynamics is the question whether the Mandelbrot set is locally connected, and related to this, for which maps the Julia set is locally connected. In this paper we shall prove the following Main Theorem: Let $f$ be a polynomial of the form $f(z)=z^d +c$ with $d$ an even integer and $c$ real. Then the Julia set of $f$ is either totally disconnected or locally connected. In particular, the Julia set of $z^2+c$ is locally connected if $c \in [-2,1/4]$ and totally disconnected otherwise.
