Rays to renormalizations

Let P be a non-linear polynomial, K_P the filled Julia set of P, f a renormalization of P and K_f the filled Julia set of f. We show, loosely speaking, that there is a finite-to-one function λfrom the set of P-external rays having limit points in K_f onto the set of f-external rays to K_f such that R and λ(R) share the same limit set. In particular, if a point of the Julia set J_f=\partial K_f of a renormalization is accessible from C\setminus K_f then it is accessible through an external ray of P (the inverse is obvious). Another interesting corollary is that: a component of K_P\setminus K_f can meet K_f only at a single (pre-)periodic point. We study also a correspondence induced by λon arguments of rays. These results are generalizations to all polynomials (covering notably the case of connected Julia set K_P) of some results of Levin-Przytycki, Blokh-Childers-Levin-Oversteegen-Schleicher and Petersen-Zakeri where the case is considered when K_P is disconnected and K_f is a periodic component of K_P.

Monotonicity of entropy and positively oriented transversality for families of interval maps

In this paper we will develop a very general approach which shows that critical relations of holomorphic maps on the complex plane unfold transversally in a positively oriented way. We will mainly illustrate this approach to obtain transversality for a wide class of one-parameter families of interval maps, for example maps with flat critical points, piecewise linear maps, maps with discontinuities but also for families of maps with complex analytic extensions such as certain polynomial-like maps.

An Extended Fatou-Shishikura inequality and wandering branch continua for polynomials

Let $P$ be a polynomial of degree $d$ with Julia set $J_P$. Let $\widetilde N$ be the number of non-repelling cycles of $P$. By the famous Fatou-Shishikura inequality $\widetilde N\le d-1$. The goal of the paper is to improve this bound. The new count includes \emph{wandering collections of non-precritical branch continua}, i.e., collections of continua or points $Q_i\subset J_P$ \emph{all} of whose images are pairwise disjoint, contain no critical points, and contain the limit sets of $\mathrm{eval}(Q_i)\ge 3$ external rays. Also, we relate individual cycles, which are either non-repelling or repelling with no periodic rays landing, to individual critical points that are recurrent in a weak sense. A weak version of the inequality reads \[ \widetilde N+N_{irr}+χ+\sum_i (\mathrm{eval}(Q_i)-2) \le d-1 \] where $N_{irr}$ counts repelling cycles with no periodic rays landing at points in the cycle, $\{Q_i\}$ form a wandering collection $\mathcal{B}_\mathbb{C}$ of non-precritical branch continua, $χ=1$ if $\mathcal{B}_\mathbb{C}$ is non-empty, and $χ=0$ otherwise.

The Lyapunov exponent of holomorphic maps

For any polynomial map with a single critical point, we prove that its lower Lyapunov exponent at the critical value is negative if and only if the map has an attracting cycle. Similar statement holds for the exponential maps and some other complex dynamical systems. We prove further that for the unicritical polynomials with positive area Julia sets almost every point of the Julia set has zero Lyapunov exponent. Part of this statement generalizes as follows: every point with positive upper Lyapunov exponent in the Julia set of an arbitrary polynomial is not a Lebegue density point.

Rigidity and non local connectivity of Julia sets of some quadratic polynomials

For an infinitely renormalizable quadratic map $f_c: z\mapsto z^2+c$ with the sequence of renormalization periods ${k_m}$ and rotation numbers ${t_m=p_m/q_m}, we prove that if $\limsup k_m^{-1}\log |p_m|>0$, then the Mandelbrot set is locally connected at $c$. We prove also that if $\limsup |t_{m+1}|^{1/q_m}<1$ and $q_m\to \infty$, then the Julia set of $f_c$ is not locally connected and the Mandelbrot set is locally connected at $c$ provided that all the renormalizations are non-primitive (satellite). This quantifies a construction of A. Douady and J. Hubbard, and weakens a condition proposed by J. Milnor. Abstract of the Addendum: We improve one of the main results of the above paper.

Multipliers of periodic orbits in spaces of rational maps

Given a polynomial or a rational map f we associate to it a space of maps. We introduce local coordinates in this space, which are essentially the set of critical values of the map. Then we consider an arbitrary periodic orbit of f with multiplier ρ\not=1 as a function of the local coordinates, and establish a simple connection between the dynamical plane of f and the function ρin the space associated to f. The proof is based on the theory of quasiconformal deformations of rational maps. As a corollary, we show that multipliers of non-repelling periodic orbits are also local coordinates in the space.

Local connectivity of the Julia set of real polynomials

One of the main questions in the field of complex dynamics is the question whether the Mandelbrot set is locally connected, and related to this, for which maps the Julia set is locally connected. In this paper we shall prove the following Main Theorem: Let $f$ be a polynomial of the form $f(z)=z^d +c$ with $d$ an even integer and $c$ real. Then the Julia set of $f$ is either totally disconnected or locally connected. In particular, the Julia set of $z^2+c$ is locally connected if $c \in [-2,1/4]$ and totally disconnected otherwise.
