PEEK: Context Map as an Orientation Cache for Long-Context LLM Agents

Large language model (LLM) agents increasingly operate over long and recurring external contexts, like document corpora and code repositories. Across invocations, existing approaches preserve either the agent's trajectory, passive access to raw material, or task-level strategies. None of them preserves what we argue is most needed for repeated same-context workloads: reusable orientation knowledge (e.g., what the context contains, how it is organized, and which entities, constants, and schemas have historically been useful) about the recurring context itself. We introduce PEEK, a system that caches and maintains this orientation knowledge as a context map: a small, constant-sized artifact in the agent's prompt that gives it a persistent peek into the external context. The map is maintained by a programmable cache policy with three modules: a Distiller that extracts transferable knowledge from inference-time signals, a Cartographer that translates it into structured edits, and a priority-based Evictor that enforces a fixed token budget. On long-context reasoning and information aggregation, PEEK improves over strong baselines by 6.3-34.0% while using 93-145 fewer iterations and incurring 1.7-5.8x lower cost than the state-of-the-art prompt-learning framework, ACE. On context learning, PEEK improves solving rate and rubric accuracy by 6.0-14.0% and 7.8-12.1%, respectively, at 1.4x lower cost than ACE. These gains generalize across LMs and agent architectures, including OpenAI Codex, a production-grade coding agent. Together, these results show that a context map helps long-context LLM agents interact with recurring external contexts more accurately and efficiently.

Kairos: Efficient Temporal Graph Analytics on a Single Machine

Many important societal problems are naturally modeled as algorithms over temporal graphs. To date, however, most graph processing systems remain inefficient as they rely on distributed processing even for graphs that fit well within a commodity server's available storage. In this paper, we introduce Kairos, a temporal graph analytics system that provides application developers a framework for efficiently implementing and executing algorithms over temporal graphs on a single machine. Specifically, Kairos relies on fork-join parallelism and a highly optimized parallel data structure as core primitives to maximize performance of graph processing tasks needed for temporal graph analytics. Furthermore, we introduce the notion of selective indexing and show how it can be used with an efficient index to speedup temporal queries. Our experiments on a 24-core server show that our algorithms obtain good parallel speedups, and are significantly faster than equivalent algorithms in existing temporal graph processing systems: up to 60x against a shared-memory approach, and several orders of magnitude when compared with distributed processing of graphs that fit within a single server.

A Study of the Fundamental Performance Characteristics of GPUs and CPUs for Database Analytics (Extended Version)

There has been significant amount of excitement and recent work on GPU-based database systems. Previous work has claimed that these systems can perform orders of magnitude better than CPU-based database systems on analytical workloads such as those found in decision support and business intelligence applications. A hardware expert would view these claims with suspicion. Given the general notion that database operators are memory-bandwidth bound, one would expect the maximum gain to be roughly equal to the ratio of the memory bandwidth of GPU to that of CPU. In this paper, we adopt a model-based approach to understand when and why the performance gains of running queries on GPUs vs on CPUs vary from the bandwidth ratio (which is roughly 16x on modern hardware). We propose Crystal, a library of parallel routines that can be combined together to run full SQL queries on a GPU with minimal materialization overhead. We implement individual query operators to show that while the speedups for selection, projection, and sorts are near the bandwidth ratio, joins achieve less speedup due to differences in hardware capabilities. Interestingly, we show on a popular analytical workload that full query performance gain from running on GPU exceeds the bandwidth ratio despite individual operators having speedup less than bandwidth ratio, as a result of limitations of vectorizing chained operators on CPUs, resulting in a 25x speedup for GPUs over CPUs on the benchmark.

Deductive Optimization of Relational Data Storage

Optimizing the physical data storage and retrieval of data are two key database management problems. In this paper, we propose a language that can express a wide range of physical database layouts, going well beyond the row- and column-based methods that are widely used in database management systems. We use deductive synthesis to turn a high-level relational representation of a database query into a highly optimized low-level implementation which operates on a specialized layout of the dataset. We build a compiler for this language and conduct experiments using a popular database benchmark, which shows that the performance of these specialized queries is competitive with a state-of-the-art in memory compiled database system.

Sat2Graph: Road Graph Extraction through Graph-Tensor Encoding

Inferring road graphs from satellite imagery is a challenging computer vision task. Prior solutions fall into two categories: (1) pixel-wise segmentation-based approaches, which predict whether each pixel is on a road, and (2) graph-based approaches, which predict the road graph iteratively. We find that these two approaches have complementary strengths while suffering from their own inherent limitations. In this paper, we propose a new method, Sat2Graph, which combines the advantages of the two prior categories into a unified framework. The key idea in Sat2Graph is a novel encoding scheme, graph-tensor encoding (GTE), which encodes the road graph into a tensor representation. GTE makes it possible to train a simple, non-recurrent, supervised model to predict a rich set of features that capture the graph structure directly from an image. We evaluate Sat2Graph using two large datasets. We find that Sat2Graph surpasses prior methods on two widely used metrics, TOPO and APLS. Furthermore, whereas prior work only infers planar road graphs, our approach is capable of inferring stacked roads (e.g., overpasses), and does so robustly.

Unnatural Language Processing: Bridging the Gap Between Synthetic and Natural Language Data

Large, human-annotated datasets are central to the development of natural language processing models. Collecting these datasets can be the most challenging part of the development process. We address this problem by introducing a general purpose technique for ``simulation-to-real'' transfer in language understanding problems with a delimited set of target behaviors, making it possible to develop models that can interpret natural utterances without natural training data. We begin with a synthetic data generation procedure, and train a model that can accurately interpret utterances produced by the data generator. To generalize to natural utterances, we automatically find projections of natural language utterances onto the support of the synthetic language, using learned sentence embeddings to define a distance metric. With only synthetic training data, our approach matches or outperforms state-of-the-art models trained on natural language data in several domains. These results suggest that simulation-to-real transfer is a practical framework for developing NLP applications, and that improved models for transfer might provide wide-ranging improvements in downstream tasks.

RoadTagger: Robust Road Attribute Inference with Graph Neural Networks

Inferring road attributes such as lane count and road type from satellite imagery is challenging. Often, due to the occlusion in satellite imagery and the spatial correlation of road attributes, a road attribute at one position on a road may only be apparent when considering far-away segments of the road. Thus, to robustly infer road attributes, the model must integrate scattered information and capture the spatial correlation of features along roads. Existing solutions that rely on image classifiers fail to capture this correlation, resulting in poor accuracy. We find this failure is caused by a fundamental limitation -- the limited effective receptive field of image classifiers. To overcome this limitation, we propose RoadTagger, an end-to-end architecture which combines both Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) to infer road attributes. The usage of graph neural networks allows information propagation on the road network graph and eliminates the receptive field limitation of image classifiers. We evaluate RoadTagger on both a large real-world dataset covering 688 km^2 area in 20 U.S. cities and a synthesized micro-dataset. In the evaluation, RoadTagger improves inference accuracy over the CNN image classifier based approaches. RoadTagger also demonstrates strong robustness against different disruptions in the satellite imagery and the ability to learn complicated inductive rules for aggregating scattered information along the road network.
