FedDUAL: A Dual-Strategy with Adaptive Loss and Dynamic Aggregation for Mitigating Data Heterogeneity in Federated Learning

Federated Learning (FL) marks a transformative approach to distributed model training by combining locally optimized models from various clients into a unified global model. While FL preserves data privacy by eliminating centralized storage, it encounters significant challenges such as performance degradation, slower convergence, and reduced robustness of the global model due to the heterogeneity in client data distributions. Among the various forms of data heterogeneity, label skew emerges as a particularly formidable and prevalent issue, especially in domains such as image classification. To address these challenges, we begin with comprehensive experiments to pinpoint the underlying issues in the FL training process. Based on our findings, we then introduce an innovative dual-strategy approach designed to effectively resolve these issues. First, we introduce an adaptive loss function for client-side training, meticulously crafted to preserve previously acquired knowledge while maintaining an optimal equilibrium between local optimization and global model coherence. Secondly, we develop a dynamic aggregation strategy for aggregating client models at the server. This approach adapts to each client's unique learning patterns, effectively addressing the challenges of diverse data across the network. Our comprehensive evaluation, conducted across three diverse real-world datasets, coupled with theoretical convergence guarantees, demonstrates the superior efficacy of our method compared to several established state-of-the-art approaches.

A New Storage Optimized Honeyword Generation Approach for Enhancing Security and Usability

Inverting the hash values by performing brute force computation is one of the latest security threats on password based authentication technique. New technologies are being developed for brute force computation and these increase the success rate of inversion attack. Honeyword base authentication protocol can successfully mitigate this threat by making password cracking detectable. However, the existing schemes have several limitations like Multiple System Vulnerability, Weak DoS Resistivity, Storage Overhead, etc. In this paper we have proposed a new honeyword generation approach, identified as Paired Distance Protocol (PDP) which overcomes almost all the drawbacks of previously proposed honeyword generation approaches. The comprehensive analysis shows that PDP not only attains a high detection rate of 97.23% but also reduces the storage cost to a great extent.

CRDT: Correlation Ratio Based Decision Tree Model for Healthcare Data Mining

The phenomenal growth in the healthcare data has inspired us in investigating robust and scalable models for data mining. For classification problems Information Gain(IG) based Decision Tree is one of the popular choices. However, depending upon the nature of the dataset, IG based Decision Tree may not always perform well as it prefers the attribute with more number of distinct values as the splitting attribute. Healthcare datasets generally have many attributes and each attribute generally has many distinct values. In this paper, we have tried to focus on this characteristics of the datasets while analysing the performance of our proposed approach which is a variant of Decision Tree model and uses the concept of Correlation Ratio(CR). Unlike IG based approach, this CR based approach has no biasness towards the attribute with more number of distinct values. We have applied our model on some benchmark healthcare datasets to show the effectiveness of the proposed technique.

Improved Solution to the Non-Domination Level Update Problem

Non-domination level update problem is to sort the non-dominated fronts after insertion or deletion of a solution. Generally the solution to this problem requires to perform the complete non-dominated sorting which is too expensive in terms of number of comparisons. Recently an Efficient Non-domination Level Update (ENLU) approach is proposed which does not perform the complete sorting. For this purpose, in this paper a space efficient version of ENLU approach is proposed without compromising the number of comparisons. However this approach does not work satisfactorily in all the cases. So we have also proposed another tree based approach for solving this non-domination level update problem. In case of insertion, the tree based approach always checks for same number of fronts unlike linear approach in which the number of fronts to be checked depends on the inserted solution. The result shows that in case where all the solutions are dominating in nature the maximum number of comparisons using tree based approach is $\mathcal{O}(\log N)$ as opposed to $\mathcal{O}(N)$ in ENLU approach. When all the solutions are equally divided into $K$ fronts such that each solution in a front is dominated by all the solutions in the previous front then the maximum number of comparisons to find a deleted solution in case of tree based approach is $K{-}\log K$ less than that of ENLU approach. Using these approaches an on-line sorting algorithm is also proposed and the competitive analysis of this algorithm is also presented.
