Anomalous diffusion in an electrolyte saturated paper matrix

Diffusion of colored dye on water saturated paper substrates has been traditionally exploited with great skill by renowned water color artists. The same physics finds more recent practical applications in paper based diagnostic devices deploying chemicals that react with a bodily fluid yielding colorimetric signals for disease detection. During spontaneous imbibition through the tortuous pathways of a porous electrolyte saturated paper matrix, a dye molecule undergoes diffusion in a complex network of pores. The advancing front forms a strongly correlated interface that propagates diffusively but with an enhanced effective diffusivity. We measure this effective diffusivity and show that it is several orders of magnitude greater than the free solution diffusivity and has a significant dependence on the solution pH and salt concentration in the background electrolyte. We attribute this to electrically mediated interfacial interactions between the ionic species in the liquid dye and spontaneous surface charges developed at porous interfaces, and introduce a simple theory to explain this phenomenon.

Interpretable deep learning for guided structure-property explorations in photovoltaics

The performance of an organic photovoltaic device is intricately connected to its active layer morphology. This connection between the active layer and device performance is very expensive to evaluate, either experimentally or computationally. Hence, designing morphologies to achieve higher performances is non-trivial and often intractable. To solve this, we first introduce a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture that can serve as a fast and robust surrogate for the complex structure-property map. Several tests were performed to gain trust in this trained model. Then, we utilize this fast framework to perform robust microstructural design to enhance device performance.

An unsupervised spatiotemporal graphical modeling approach to anomaly detection in distributed CPS

Modern distributed cyber-physical systems (CPSs) encounter a large variety of physical faults and cyber anomalies and in many cases, they are vulnerable to catastrophic fault propagation scenarios due to strong connectivity among the sub-systems. This paper presents a new data-driven framework for system-wide anomaly detection for addressing such issues. The framework is based on a spatiotemporal feature extraction scheme built on the concept of symbolic dynamics for discovering and representing causal interactions among the subsystems of a CPS. The extracted spatiotemporal features are then used to learn system-wide patterns via a Restricted Boltzmann Machine (RBM). The results show that: (1) the RBM free energy in the off-nominal conditions is different from that in the nominal conditions and can be used for anomaly detection; (2) the framework can capture multiple nominal modes with one graphical model; (3) the case studies with simulated data and an integrated building system validate the proposed approach.
