Valuations, completions, and hyperbolic actions of metabelian groups

Actions on hyperbolic metric spaces are an important tool for studying groups, and so it is natural, but difficult, to attempt to classify all such actions of a fixed group. In this paper, we build strong connections between hyperbolic geometry and commutative algebra in order to classify the cobounded hyperbolic actions of numerous metabelian groups up to a coarse equivalence. In particular, we turn this classification problem into the problems of classifying ideals in the completions of certain rings and calculating invariant subspaces of matrices. We use this framework to classify the cobounded hyperbolic actions of many abelian-by-cyclic groups associated to expanding integer matrices. Each such action is equivalent to an action on a tree or on a Heintze group (a classically studied class of negatively curved Lie groups). Our investigations incorporate number systems, factorization in formal power series rings, completions, and valuations.

Topology of moduli spaces of tropical curves with marked points

We study a space of genus $g$ stable, $n$-marked tropical curves with total edge length $1$. Its rational homology is identified both with top-weight cohomology of the complex moduli space $M_{g,n}$ and with the homology of a marked version of Kontsevich's graph complex, up to a shift in degrees. We prove a contractibility criterion that applies to various large subspaces. From this we derive a description of the homotopy type of the tropical moduli space for $g = 1$, the top weight cohomology of $M_{1,n}$ as an $S_n$-representation, and additional calculations for small $(g,n)$. We also deduce a vanishing theorem for homology of marked graph complexes from vanishing of cohomology of $M_{g,n}$ in appropriate degrees, and comment on stability phenomena, or lack thereof.

Tropical curves, graph complexes, and top weight cohomology of M_g

We study the topology of a space parametrizing stable tropical curves of genus g with volume 1, showing that its reduced rational homology is canonically identified with both the top weight cohomology of M_g and also with the genus g part of the homology of Kontsevich's graph complex. Using a theorem of Willwacher relating this graph complex to the Grothendieck-Teichmueller Lie algebra, we deduce that H^{4g-6}(M_g;Q) is nonzero for g=3, g=5, and g at least 7. This disproves a recent conjecture of Church, Farb, and Putman as well as an older, more general conjecture of Kontsevich. We also give an independent proof of another theorem of Willwacher, that homology of the graph complex vanishes in negative degrees.

Nonarchimedean geometry, tropicalization, and metrics on curves

We develop a number of general techniques for comparing analytifications and tropicalizations of algebraic varieties. Our basic results include a projection formula for tropical multiplicities and a generalization of the Sturmfels-Tevelev multiplicity formula in tropical elimination theory to the case of a nontrivial valuation. For curves, we explore in detail the relationship between skeletal metrics and lattice lengths on tropicalizations and show that the maps from the analytification of a curve to the tropicalizations of its toric embeddings stabilize to an isometry on finite subgraphs. Other applications include generalizations of Speyer's well-spacedness condition and the Katz-Markwig-Markwig results on tropical j-invariants.

On a Cohen-Lenstra Heuristic for Jacobians of Random Graphs

In this paper, we make specific conjectures about the distribution of Jacobians of random graphs with their canonical duality pairings. Our conjectures are based on a Cohen-Lenstra type heuristic saying that a finite abelian group with duality pairing appears with frequency inversely proportional to the size of the group times the size of the group of automorphisms that preserve the pairing. We conjecture that the Jacobian of a random graph is cyclic with probability a little over .7935. We determine the values of several other statistics on Jacobians of random graphs that would follow from our conjectures. In support of the conjectures, we prove that random symmetric matrices over the p-adic integers, distributed according to Haar measure, have cokernels distributed according to the above heuristic. We also give experimental evidence in support of our conjectures.

Operational K-theory

We study the operational bivariant theory associated to the covariant theory of Grothendieck groups of coherent sheaves, and prove that it has many geometric properties analogous to those of operational Chow theory. This operational K-theory agrees with Grothendieck groups of vector bundles on smooth varieties, admits a natural map from the Grothendieck group of perfect complexes on general varieties, satisfies descent for Chow envelopes, and is A^1-homotopy invariant. Furthermore, we show that the operational K-theory of a complete linear variety is dual to the Grothendieck group of coherent sheaves. As an application, we show that the K-theory of perfect complexes on any complete toric threefold surjects onto this group. Finally, we identify the equivariant operational K-theory of an arbitrary toric variety with the ring of integral piecewise exponential functions on the associated fan.

Tropical independence II: The maximal rank conjecture for quadrics

Building on our earlier results on tropical independence and shapes of divisors in tropical linear series, we give a tropical proof of the maximal rank conjecture for quadrics. We also prove a tropical analogue of Max Noether's theorem on quadrics containing a canonically embedded curve, and state a combinatorial conjecture about tropical independence on chains of loops that implies the maximal rank conjecture for algebraic curves.

On the structure of nonarchimedean analytic curves

Let K be an algebraically closed, complete nonarchimedean field and let X be a smooth K-curve. In this paper we elaborate on several aspects of the structure of the Berkovich analytic space X^an. We define semistable vertex sets of X^an and their associated skeleta, which are essentially finite metric graphs embedded in X^an. We prove a folklore theorem which states that semistable vertex sets of X are in natural bijective correspondence with semistable models of X, thus showing that our notion of skeleton coincides with the standard definition of Berkovich. We use the skeletal theory to define a canonical metric on H(X^an) := X^an - X(K), and we give a proof of Thuillier's nonarchimedean Poincaré-Lelong formula in this language using results of Bosch and Lütkebohmert.

Lifting tropical intersections

We show that points in the intersection of the tropicalizations of subvarieties of a torus lift to algebraic intersection points with expected multiplicities, provided that the tropicalizations intersect in the expected dimension. We also prove a similar result for intersections inside an ambient subvariety of the torus, when the tropicalizations meet inside a facet of multiplicity 1. The proofs require not only the geometry of compactified tropicalizations of subvarieties of toric varieties, but also new results about the geometry of finite type schemes over non-noetherian valuation rings of rank 1. In particular, we prove subadditivity of codimension and a principle of continuity for intersections in smooth schemes over such rings, generalizing well-known theorems over regular local rings. An appendix on the topology of finite type morphisms may also be of independent interest.

Limits of tropicalizations

We give general criteria under which the limit of a system of tropicalizations of a scheme over a nonarchimedean field is homeomorphic to the analytification of the scheme. As an application, we show that the analytification of an arbitrary closed subscheme of a toric variety is naturally homeomorphic to the limit of its tropicalizations, generalizing an earlier result of the third author for quasiprojective varieties.

A note on Brill-Noether thoery and rank determining sets for metric graphs

We produce open subsets of the moduli space of metric graphs without separating edges where the dimensions of Brill-Noether loci are larger than the corresponding Brill-Noether numbers. These graphs also have minimal rank determining sets that are larger than expected, giving couterexamples to a conjecture of Luo. Furthermore, limits of these graphs have Brill-Noether loci of the expected dimension, so dimensions of Brill-Noether loci of metric graphs do not vary upper semicontinuously in families. Motivated by these examples, we study a notion of rank for the Brill-Noether locus of a metric graph, closely analogous to the Baker-Norine definition of the rank of a divisor. We show that ranks of Brill-Noether loci vary upper semicontinuously in families of metric graphs and are related to dimensions of Brill-Noether loci of algebraic curves by a specialization inequality.

Boundary complexes and weight filtrations

We study the dual complexes of boundary divisors in log resolutions of compactifications of algebraic varieties and show that the homotopy types of these complexes are independent of all choices. Inspired by recent developments in nonarchimedean geometry, we consider relations between these boundary complexes and weight filtrations on singular cohomology and cohomology with compact supports, and give applications to dual complexes of resolutions of isolated singularities that generalize results of Stepanov and Thuillier.

Cox rings and pseudoeffective cones of projectivized toric vector bundles

We study projectivizations of a special class of toric vector bundles that includes cotangent bundles, whose associated Klyachko filtrations are particularly simple. For these projectivized bundles, we give generators for the cone of effective divisors and a presentation of the Cox ring as a polynomial algebra over the Cox ring of a blowup of a projective space along a sequence of linear subspaces. As applications, we show that the projectivized cotangent bundles of some toric varieties are not Mori dream spaces and give examples of projectivized toric vector bundles whose Cox rings are isomorphic to that of M_{0,n}.

Discrete bidding games

We study variations on combinatorial games in which, instead of alternating moves, the players bid with discrete bidding chips for the right to determine who moves next. We consider both symmetric and partisan games, and explore differences between discrete bidding games and Richman games, which allow real-valued bidding. Unlike Richman games, discrete bidding game variations of many familiar games, such as chess, Connect Four, and even Tic-Tac-Toe, are suitable for recreational play. We also present an analysis of Tic-Tac-Toe for both discrete and real-valued bidding.

Realization spaces for tropical fans

We introduce a moduli functor for varieties whose tropicalization realizes a given weighted fan and show that this functor is an algebraic space in general, and is represented by a scheme of finite type when the associated toric variety is quasiprojective. We study the geometry of these tropical realization spaces for the matroid fans studied by Ardila and Klivans, and show that the tropical realization space of a matroid fan is a torus torsor over the realization space of the matroid. As a consequence, we deduce that these tropical realization spaces satisfy Murphy's Law.

Positivity for toric vector bundles

We show that an equivariant vector bundle on a complete toric variety is nef or ample if and only if its restriction to every invariant curve is nef or ample, respectively. Furthermore, we show that nef toric vector bundles have a nonvanishing global section at every point, and deduce that the underlying vector bundle is trivial if and only if its restriction to every invariant curve is trivial. We apply our methods and results to study, in particular, the vector bundles M_L that arise as the kernel of the evaluation map on sections of L, when L is an ample line bundle. We give examples of twists of such bundles that are ample but not globally generated.

Cayley decompositions of lattice polytopes and upper bounds for h^*-polynomials

We give an effective upper bound on the h^*-polynomial of a lattice polytope in terms of its degree and leading coefficient, confirming a conjecture of Batyrev. We deduce this bound as a consequence of a strong Cayley decomposition theorem which says, roughly speaking, that any lattice polytope with a large multiple that has no interior lattice points has a nontrivial decomposition as a Cayley sum of polytopes of smaller dimension. In an appendix, we interpret this result in terms of adjunction theory for toric varieties.

Moduli of toric vector bundles

We give a presentation of the moduli stack of toric vector bundles with fixed equivariant total Chern class as a quotient of a fine moduli scheme of framed bundles by a linear group action. This fine moduli scheme is described explicitly as a locally closed subscheme of a product of partial flag varieties cut out by combinatorially specified rank conditions. We use this description to show that the moduli of rank three toric vector bundles satisfy Murphy's Law, in the sense of Vakil. The preliminary sections of the paper give a self-contained introduction to Klyachko's classification of toric vector bundles.
