Physical velocity of particles in relativistic curved momentum space

We show in general that for a relativistic theory with curved momentum space, i.e.~a theory with deformed relativistic symmetries, the physical velocity of particles coincides with their group velocity. This clarifies a long-standing question about the discrepancy between coordinate and group velocity for this kind of theories. The first evidence that this was the case had been obtained at linear order in the deformation parameter in Phys.Lett.B700(2011)150 for the specific case of $κ$-momentum space. The proof was based on the recent understanding of how relative locality affects these scenarios. We here rely again on a careful implementation of relative locality effects, and obtain our result for a generic (relativistic) curved momentum space framework at all orders in the deformation/curvature parameter. We also discuss the validity of this result when the deformation depends on the coordinates as well as on the momenta.

Inflation as de Sitter instability

We consider cosmological inflation generated by a scalar field slowly rolling off from a de Sitter maximum of its potential. The models belong to the class of hilltop models and represent the most general model of this kind in which the scalar potential can be written as the sum of two exponentials. The minimally coupled Einstein-scalar gravity theory obtained in this way is the cosmological version of a two-scale generalization of known holographic models, allowing for solitonic solutions interpolating between an AdS spacetime in the infrared and scaling solutions in the ultraviolet. We then investigate cosmological inflation in the slow-roll approximation. Our model reproduces correctly, for a wide range of its parameters, the most recent experimental data for the power spectrum of primordial perturbations. Moreover, it predicts inflation at energy scales of four to five orders of magnitude below the Planck scale. At the onset of inflation, the mass of the tachyonic excitation, i.e. of the inflaton, turns out to be seven to eight orders of magnitude smaller than the Planck mass.

Phase transition and hyperscaling violation for scalar Black Branes

We investigate the thermodynamical behavior and the scaling symmetries of the scalar dressed black brane (BB) solutions of a recently proposed, exactly integrable Einstein-scalar gravity model [1], which also arises as compactification of (p-1)-branes with a smeared charge. The extremal, zero temperature, solution is a scalar soliton interpolating between a conformal invariant AdS vacuum in the near-horizon region and a scale covariant metric (generating hyperscaling violation on the boundary field theory) asymptotically. We show explicitly that for the boundary field theory this implies the emergence of an UV length scale (related to the size of the brane), which decouples in the IR, where conformal invariance is restored. We also show that at high temperatures the system undergoes a phase transition. Whereas at small temperature the Schwarzschild-AdS BB is stable, above a critical temperature the scale covariant, scalar-dressed BB solution, becomes energetically preferred. We calculate the critical exponent z and the hyperscaling violation parameter of the scalar-dressed phase. In particular we show that the hyperscaling violation parameter is always negative. We also show that the above features are not a peculiarity of the exact integrable model of Ref.[1], but are a quite generic feature of Einstein-scalar and Einstein-Maxwell-scalar gravity models for which the squared-mass of the scalar field is positive and the potential vanishes exponentially as the scalar field goes to minus infinity.

Black brane solutions and their solitonic extremal limit in Einstein-scalar gravity

We investigate static, planar, solutions of Einstein-scalar gravity admitting an anti-de Sitter (AdS) vacuum. When the squared mass of the scalar field is positive and the scalar potential can be derived from a superpotential, minimum energy theorems indicate the existence of a scalar soliton. On the other hand, for these models, no-hair theorems forbid the existence of hairy black brane solutions with AdS asymptotics. By considering a specific example (an exact integrable model which has the form of a Toda molecule) and by deriving explicit exact solution, we show that these models allow for hairy black brane solutions with non-AdS domain wall asymptotics, whose extremal limit is a scalar soliton. The soliton smoothly interpolates between a non-AdS domain wall solution at $r=\infty$ and an AdS solution near $r=0$.

Exact solutions with AdS asymptotics of Einstein and Einstein-Maxwell gravity minimally coupled to a scalar field

We propose a general method for solving exactly the static field equations of Einstein and Einstein-Maxwell gravity minimally coupled to a scalar field. Our method starts from an ansatz for the scalar field profile, and determines, together with the metric functions, the corresponding form of the scalar self-interaction potential. Using this method we prove a new no-hair theorem about the existence of hairy black-hole and black-brane solutions and derive broad classes of static solutions with radial symmetry of the theory, which may play an important role in applications of the AdS/CFT correspondence to condensed matter and strongly coupled QFTs. These solutions include: 1) four- or generic $(d+2)$-dimensional solutions with planar, spherical or hyperbolic horizon topology; 2) solutions with AdS, domain wall and Lifshitz asymptotics; 3) solutions interpolating between an AdS spacetime in the asymptotic region and a domain wall or conformal Lifshitz spacetime in the near-horizon region.

Noncommutative Spacetime in Very Special Relativity

Very Special Relativity (VSR) framework, proposed by Cohen and Glashow [1], demonstrated that a proper subgroup of the Poincaré group, (in particular ISIM(2)), is sufficient to describe the spacetime symmetries of the so far observed physical phenomena. Subsequently a deformation of the latter, $DISIM_b(2)$, was suggested by Gibbons, Gomis and Pope [2]. In the present work, we introduce a novel Non-Commutative (NC) spacetime structure, underlying the $DISIM_b(2)$. This allows us to construct explicitly the $DISIM_b(2)$ generators, consisting of a sector of Lorentz rotation generators and the translation generators. Exploiting the Darboux map technique, we construct a point particle Lagrangian that lives in the NC phase space proposed by us and satisfies the modified dispersion relation proposed by Gibbons et. al. [2]. It is interesting to note that in our formulation the momentum algebra becomes non-commutative.

Quantum mechanics in de Sitter space

We consider some possible phenomenological implications of the extended uncertainty principle, which is believed to hold for quantum mechanics in de Sitter spacetime. The relative size of the corrections to the standard results is however of the order of the ratio between the length scale of the quantum mechanical system and the de Sitter radius, and therefore exceedingly small. Nevertheless, the existence of effects due to the large scale curvature of spacetime in atomic experiments has a theoretical relevance.

Two-dimensional higher-derivative gravity and conformal transformations

We consider the lagrangian $L=F(R)$ in classical (=non-quantized) two-dimensional fourth-order gravity and give new relations to Einstein's theory with a non-minimally coupled scalar field. We distinguish between scale-invariant lagrangians and scale-invariant field equations. $L$ is scale-invariant for $F = c_1 R\sp {k+1}$ and a divergence for $F=c_2 R$. The field equation is scale-invariant not only for the sum of them, but also for $F=R\ln R$. We prove this to be the only exception and show in which sense it is the limit of $\frac{1}{k} R\sp{k+1}$ as $k\to 0$. More generally: Let $H$ be a divergence and $F$ a scale-invariant lagrangian, then $L= H\ln F $ has a scale-invariant field equation. Further, we comment on the known generalized Birkhoff theorem and exact solutions including black holes.
