Effective models of non-singular quantum black holes

We investigate how the resolution of the singularity problem for the Schwarzschild BH could be related to the presence of quantum gravity effects at horizon scales. Motivated by the analogy with the cosmological Schwarzschild-dS solution, we construct a class of non-singular, static, asymptotically-flat BH solutions with a dS core, sourced by an anisotropic fluid, which encodes the quantum corrections. The latter are parametrized by a single length-scale $\ell$, which has a dual interpretation as an effective "quantum hair" and as the length-scale resolving the classical singularity. Depending on the value of $\ell$, these solutions can have two horizons, be extremal (when the two horizons merge) or be horizonless exotic stars. We also investigate the thermodynamic behavior of our BH solutions and propose a generalization of the area law in order to account for their entropy. We find a second-order phase transition near extremality, when $\ell$ is of order of the classical Schwarzschild radius $R_{\rm S}$. BHs with $\ell\sim R_{\rm S}$ are thermodynamically preferred with respect to those with $\ell\ll R_{\rm S}$, supporting the relevance of quantum corrections at horizon scales. We also find that the extremal configuration is a zero-temperature, zero-entropy state with its near-horizon geometry factorizing as AdS$_2\times$ S$^2$, signalizing the possible relevance of these models for the information paradox. We show that the presence of quantum corrections with $\ell\sim R_{\rm S}$ have observable phenomenological signatures in the photon orbits and in the QNMs spectrum. In particular, in the near-extremal regime, the imaginary part of the spectrum scales with the temperature as $c_1/\ell+c_2\ell T_\text{H}^2$, while it goes to zero linearly in the near-horizon limit. Our general findings are confirmed by revisiting two already-known models, namely the Hayward and gaussian-core BHs.

Quasi-normal modes and microscopic description of 2D black holes

We investigate the possibility of using quasi-normal modes (QNMs) to probe the microscopic structure of two-dimensional (2D) anti-de Sitter (AdS$_2$) dilatonic black holes. We first extend previous results on the QNMs spectrum, found for external massless scalar perturbations, to the case of massive scalar perturbations. We find that the quasi-normal frequencies are purely imaginary and scale linearly with the overtone number. Motivated by this and extending previous results regarding Schwarzschild black holes, we propose a microscopic description of the 2D black hole in terms of a coherent state of $N$ massless particles quantized on a circle, with occupation numbers sharply peaked on the characteristic QNMs frequency $\hat ω$. We further model the black hole as a statistical ensemble of $N$ decoupled quantum oscillators of frequency $\hatω$. This allows us to recover the Bekenstein-Hawking (BH) entropy $S$ of the hole as the leading contribution to the Gibbs entropy for the set of oscillators, in the high-temperature regime, and to show that $S=N$. Additionally, we find sub-leading logarithmic corrections to the BH entropy. We further corroborate this microscopic description by outlining a holographic correspondence between QNMs in the AdS$_2$ bulk and the de Alfaro-Fubini-Furlan conformally invariant quantum mechanics. Our results strongly suggest that modelling a black hole as a coherent state of particles and as a statistical ensemble of decoupled harmonic oscillators is always a good approximation in the large black-hole mass, large overtone number limit.

Unitarity and Page curve for evaporation of 2D AdS black holes

We explore the Hawking evaporation of two-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS$_2$), dilatonic black hole coupled with conformal matter, and derive the Page curve for the entanglement entropy of radiation. We first work in a semiclassical approximation with backreaction. We show that the end-point of the evaporation process is AdS$_2$ with a vanishing dilaton, i.e. a regular, singularity-free, zero-entropy state. We explicitly compute the entanglement entropies of the black hole and the radiation, as functions of the horizon radius, using the conformal field theory (CFT) dual to AdS$_2$ gravity. We use a simplified toy model, in which evaporation is described by the forming and growing of a negative mass configuration in the positive-mass black hole interior. This is similar to the ``islands'' proposal, recently put forward to explain the Page curve for evaporating black holes. The resulting Page curve for AdS$_2$ black holes is in agreement with unitary evolution. The entanglement entropy of the radiation initially grows, closely following a thermal behavior, reaches a maximum at half-way of the evaporation process, and then goes down to zero, following the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the black hole. Consistency of our simplified model requires a non-trivial identification of the central charge of the CFT describing AdS$_2$ gravity with the number of species of fields describing Hawking radiation.

Anisotropic Fluid Cosmology: an Alternative to Dark Matter?

We use anisotropic fluid cosmology to describe the present, dark energy-dominated, universe. Similarly to what has been proposed for galactic dynamics, the anisotropic fluid gives an effective description of baryonic matter, dark energy and their possible interaction, without assuming the presence of dark matter. The resulting anisotropic fluid spacetime naturally generates inhomogeneities at small scales, triggered by an anisotropic stress, and could therefore be responsible for structure formation at these scales. Solving the cosmological equations, we show that the dynamics of the scale factor $a$ is described by usual FLRW cosmology and decouples completely from that describing inhomogeneities. We assume that the cosmological anisotropic fluid inherits the equation of state from that used to describe galaxy rotation curves. We show that, in the large scale regime, the fluid can be described as a generalized Chaplygin gas and fits well the distance modulus experimental data of type Ia supernovae, thus correctly modelling the observed accelerated expansion of the universe. Conversely, in the small scale regime, we use cosmological perturbation theory to derive the power spectrum $P(k)$ for mass density distribution. At short wavelengths, we find a $1/k^4$ behaviour, in good accordance with the observed correlation function for matter distribution at small scales.

How long does a lockdown need to be?

Social distancing, often in the form of lockdown, has been adopted by many countries as a way to contrast the spreading of COVID-19. We discuss the temporal aspects of social distancing in contrasting an epidemic diffusion. We argue that a strategy based uniquely on social distancing requires to maintain the relative measures for a very long time, while a more articulate strategy, which also uses early detection and prompt isolation, can be both more efficient on reducing the epidemic peak and allow to relax the social distancing measures after a much shorter time. We consider in more detail the situation in Italy, simulating the effect of different strategies through a recently introduced SIR-type epidemiological model. The short answer to the question in the title is: "it depends on what else you do".

preprint2020arXiv

How to reduce epidemic peaks keeping under control the time-span of the epidemic

One of the main challenges of the measures against the COVID-19 epidemic is to reduce the amplitude of the epidemic peak without increasing without control its timescale. We investigate this problem using the SIR model for the epidemic dynamics, for which reduction of the epidemic peak $I_P$ can be achieved only at the price of increasing the time $t_P$ of its occurrence and its entire time-span $t_E$. By means of a time reparametrization we linearize the equations for the SIR dynamics. This allows us to solve exactly the dynamics in the time domain and to derive the scaling behaviour of the size, the timescale and the speed of the epidemics, by reducing the infection rate $α$ and by increasing the removal rate $β$ by a factor of $λ$. We show that for a given value of the size ($I_P$, the total, $I_E$ and average $\hat I_P$ number of infected), its occurrence time $t_P$ and entire time-span $t_E$ can be reduced by a factor $1/λ$ if the reduction of $I$ is achieved by increasing the removal rate instead of reducing the infection rate. Thus, epidemic containment measures based on tracing, early detection followed by prompt isolation of infected individuals are more efficient than those based on social distancing. We apply our results to the COVID-19 epidemic in Northern Italy. We show that the peak time $t_P$ and the entire time span $t_E$ could have been reduced by a factor $0.9 \le 1/λ\le 0.34$ with containment measures focused on increasing $β$ instead of reducing $α$.

Size and timescale of epidemics in the SIR framework

The most important features to assess the severity of an epidemic are its size and its timescale. We discuss these features in a systematic way in the context of SIR and SIR-type models. We investigate in detail how the size and timescale of the epidemic can be changed by acting on the parameters characterizing the model. Using these results and having as guideline the COVID-19 epidemic in Italy, we compare the efficiency of different containment strategies for contrasting an epidemic diffusion such as social distancing, lockdown, tracing, early detection and isolation.

Inflation as de Sitter instability

We consider cosmological inflation generated by a scalar field slowly rolling off from a de Sitter maximum of its potential. The models belong to the class of hilltop models and represent the most general model of this kind in which the scalar potential can be written as the sum of two exponentials. The minimally coupled Einstein-scalar gravity theory obtained in this way is the cosmological version of a two-scale generalization of known holographic models, allowing for solitonic solutions interpolating between an AdS spacetime in the infrared and scaling solutions in the ultraviolet. We then investigate cosmological inflation in the slow-roll approximation. Our model reproduces correctly, for a wide range of its parameters, the most recent experimental data for the power spectrum of primordial perturbations. Moreover, it predicts inflation at energy scales of four to five orders of magnitude below the Planck scale. At the onset of inflation, the mass of the tachyonic excitation, i.e. of the inflaton, turns out to be seven to eight orders of magnitude smaller than the Planck mass.

On the universality of thermodynamics and $η/s$ ratio for the charged Lovelock black branes

We investigate general features of charged Lovelock black branes by giving a detailed description of geometrical, thermodynamic and holographic properties of charged Gauss-Bonnet (GB) black branes in five dimensions. We show that when expressed in terms of effective physical parameters, the thermodynamic behaviour of charged GB black branes is completely indistinguishable from that of charged Einstein black branes. Moreover, the extremal, near-horizon limit of the two classes of branes is exactly the same as they allow for the same AdS$_2\times R_3$, near-horizon, exact solution. This implies that, although in the UV the associated dual QFTs are different, they flow in the IR to the same fixed point. The calculation of the shear viscosity to entropy ratio $η/s$ confirms these results. Despite the GB dual plasma has in general a non-universal temperature-dependent $η/s$, it flows monotonically to the universal value $1/4π$ in the IR. For negative (positive) GB coupling constant, $η/s$ is an increasing (decreasing) function of the temperature and the flow respects (violates) the KSS bound.

Asymptotically flat black holes sourced by a massless scalar field

We derive exact, asymptotically flat black hole solutions of Einstein-scalar gravity sourced by a non trivial scalar field with $1/r$ asymptotic behaviour. They are determined using an ansatz for the scalar field profile and working out, together with the metric functions, the corresponding form of the scalar self-interaction potential. Near to the singularity the black hole behaves as the Janis-Newmann-Winicour-Wyman solution. We also work out a consistent thermodynamical description of our black hole solutions. For large mass our hairy black holes have the same thermodynamical behaviour of the Schwarzschild black hole, whereas for small masses they differ substantially from the latter.

Black holes sourced by a massless scalar

We construct asymptotically flat black hole solutions of Einstein-scalar gravity sourced by a nontrivial scalar field with 1/r asymptotic behaviour. Near the singularity the black hole behaves as the Janis-Newmann-Winicour-Wyman solution. The hairy black hole solutions allow for a consistent thermodynamical description. At large mass they have the same thermodynamical behaviour of the Schwarzschild black hole, whereas for small masses they differ substantially from the latter.

Speed selection for coupled wave equations

We discuss models for coupled wave equations describing interacting fields, focusing on the speed of travelling wave solutions. In particular, we propose a general mechanism for selecting and tuning the speed of the corresponding (multi-component) travelling wave solutions under certain physical conditions. A number of physical models (molecular chains, coupled Josephson junctions, propagation of kinks in chains of adsorbed atoms and domain walls) are considered as examples.

Black hole solutions of gravity theories with nonminimal coupling between matter and curvature

We study black hole solutions in an extension of General Relativity (GR) with an explicit non-minimal coupling between matter and curvature. General black hole solutions satisfying the known energy conditions are derived including the ones with anti-de Sitter background. These solutions differ from those of GR just by a coupling function dependent rescaling of the mass and charge of the black hole and by a "dressing" of the cosmological constant. The existence of black hole solutions of the nonminimally coupled theory as well as the conditions for a suitable weak field limit are considered as a constraint on the coupling function responsible for the nonminimal coupling between matter and curvature. The "dressing" of the cosmological constant is then used to address the cosmological constant problem.

Dark Energy from holographic theories with hyperscaling violation

We show that analytical continuation maps scalar solitonic solutions of Einstein-scalar gravity, interpolating between an hyperscaling violating and an Anti de Sitter (AdS) region, in flat FLRW cosmological solutions sourced by a scalar field. We generate in this way exact FLRW solutions that can be used to model cosmological evolution driven by dark energy (a quintessence field) and usual matter. In absence of matter, the flow from the hyperscaling violating regime to the conformal AdS fixed point in holographic models corresponds to cosmological evolution from power-law expansion at early cosmic times to a de Sitter (dS) stable fixed point at late times. In presence of matter, we have a scaling regime at early times, followed by an intermediate regime in which dark energy tracks matter. At late times the solution exits the scaling regime with a sharp transition to a dS spacetime. The phase transition between hyperscaling violation and conformal fixed point observed in holographic gravity has a cosmological counterpart in the transition between a scaling era and a dS era dominated by the energy of the vacuum.

Infrared Behavior of Scalar Condensates in Effective Holographic Theories

We investigate the infrared behavior of the spectrum of scalar-dressed, asymptotically Anti de Sitter (AdS) black brane (BB) solutions of effective holographic models. These solutions describe scalar condensates in the dual field theories. We show that for zero charge density the ground state of these BBs must be degenerate with the AdS vacuum, must satisfy conformal boundary conditions for the scalar field and it is isolated from the continuous part of the spectrum. When a finite charge density is switched on, the ground state is not anymore isolated and the degeneracy is removed. Depending on the coupling functions, the new ground state may possibly be energetically preferred with respect to the extremal Reissner-Nordstrom AdS BB. We derive several properties of BBs near extremality and at finite temperature. As a check and illustration of our results we derive and discuss several analytic and numerical, BB solutions of Einstein-scalar-Maxwell AdS gravity with different coupling functions and different potentials. We also discuss how our results can be used for understanding holographic quantum critical points, in particular their stability and the associated quantum phase transitions leading to superconductivity or hyperscaling violation.

Scalar black branes with non-AdS asymptotics

Black brane solutions with scalar hair and with non-AdS asymptotics have several features that make them very interesting for holographic applications: (1) They allow to circumvent usual no-hair theorems; (2) They may have a non singular extremal limit in the form of a scalar soliton that interpolates between AdS and non-AdS vacua; (3) They allow for phase transitions between the Schwarzschild-AdS (SADS) and scalar dressed black branes; (4) They give an holographic realization of hyperscaling violation in critical systems. In this note I illustrate these features using an exact integrable Einstein-scalar gravity model.

Hyperscaling violation for scalar black branes in arbitrary dimensions

We extend to black branes (BB) in arbitrary dimensions the results of Ref. [1] about hyperscaling violation and phase transition for scalar black 2-branes. We derive the analytic form of the (d+1)-dimensional scalar soliton interpolating between a conformal invariant AdS vacuum in the infrared and a scale covariant metric in the ultraviolet. We show that the thermodynamical system undergoes a phase transition between Schwarzschild-AdS and a scalar-dressed BB. We calculate the critical exponent and the hyperscaling violation parameter in the two phases. We show that our scalar BB solutions generically emerge as compactifications of p-brane solutions of supergravity theories. We also derive the short distance form of the correlators for the scalar operators corresponding to an UV exponential potential supporting our black brane solution. We show that also for negative values of the hyperscaling violation parameter these correlators have a short distance power-law behavior.

Phase transition and hyperscaling violation for scalar Black Branes

We investigate the thermodynamical behavior and the scaling symmetries of the scalar dressed black brane (BB) solutions of a recently proposed, exactly integrable Einstein-scalar gravity model [1], which also arises as compactification of (p-1)-branes with a smeared charge. The extremal, zero temperature, solution is a scalar soliton interpolating between a conformal invariant AdS vacuum in the near-horizon region and a scale covariant metric (generating hyperscaling violation on the boundary field theory) asymptotically. We show explicitly that for the boundary field theory this implies the emergence of an UV length scale (related to the size of the brane), which decouples in the IR, where conformal invariance is restored. We also show that at high temperatures the system undergoes a phase transition. Whereas at small temperature the Schwarzschild-AdS BB is stable, above a critical temperature the scale covariant, scalar-dressed BB solution, becomes energetically preferred. We calculate the critical exponent z and the hyperscaling violation parameter of the scalar-dressed phase. In particular we show that the hyperscaling violation parameter is always negative. We also show that the above features are not a peculiarity of the exact integrable model of Ref.[1], but are a quite generic feature of Einstein-scalar and Einstein-Maxwell-scalar gravity models for which the squared-mass of the scalar field is positive and the potential vanishes exponentially as the scalar field goes to minus infinity.

Black brane solutions and their solitonic extremal limit in Einstein-scalar gravity

We investigate static, planar, solutions of Einstein-scalar gravity admitting an anti-de Sitter (AdS) vacuum. When the squared mass of the scalar field is positive and the scalar potential can be derived from a superpotential, minimum energy theorems indicate the existence of a scalar soliton. On the other hand, for these models, no-hair theorems forbid the existence of hairy black brane solutions with AdS asymptotics. By considering a specific example (an exact integrable model which has the form of a Toda molecule) and by deriving explicit exact solution, we show that these models allow for hairy black brane solutions with non-AdS domain wall asymptotics, whose extremal limit is a scalar soliton. The soliton smoothly interpolates between a non-AdS domain wall solution at $r=\infty$ and an AdS solution near $r=0$.

Exact solutions with AdS asymptotics of Einstein and Einstein-Maxwell gravity minimally coupled to a scalar field

We propose a general method for solving exactly the static field equations of Einstein and Einstein-Maxwell gravity minimally coupled to a scalar field. Our method starts from an ansatz for the scalar field profile, and determines, together with the metric functions, the corresponding form of the scalar self-interaction potential. Using this method we prove a new no-hair theorem about the existence of hairy black-hole and black-brane solutions and derive broad classes of static solutions with radial symmetry of the theory, which may play an important role in applications of the AdS/CFT correspondence to condensed matter and strongly coupled QFTs. These solutions include: 1) four- or generic $(d+2)$-dimensional solutions with planar, spherical or hyperbolic horizon topology; 2) solutions with AdS, domain wall and Lifshitz asymptotics; 3) solutions interpolating between an AdS spacetime in the asymptotic region and a domain wall or conformal Lifshitz spacetime in the near-horizon region.

Holography of charged dilatonic black branes at finite temperature

We investigate bulk and holographic features of finite-temperature black brane solutions of 4D anti-de Sitter Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-gravity (EMDG). We construct, numerically, black branes endowed with non trivial scalar hairs for broad classes of EMDG. We consider both exponential and power-law forms for the coupling functions, as well as several charge configurations: purely electric, purely magnetic and dyonic solutions. At finite temperature the field theory holographically dual to these black brane solutions has a rich and interesting phenomenology reminiscent of electron motion in metals: phase transitions triggered by nonvanishing VEV of scalar operators, non-monotonic behavior of the electric conductivities as function of the frequency and of the temperature, Hall effect and sharp synchrotron resonances of the conductivity in presence of a magnetic field. Conversely, in the zero temperature limit the conductivities for these models show a universal behavior. The optical conductivity has a power-law behavior as a function of the frequency, whereas the DC conductivity is suppressed at small temperatures.

Phase transitions between Reissner-Nordstrom and dilatonic black holes in 4D AdS spacetime

We study Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity models in four-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime which admit the Reissner-Nordstrom (RN) black hole solution. We show that below a critical temperature the AdS-RN solution becomes unstable against scalar perturbations and the gravitational system undergoes a phase transition. We show using numerical calculations that the new phase is a charged dilatonic black hole. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence we discuss the phase transition in the dual field theory both for non-vanishing temperatures and in the extremal limit. The extremal solution has a Lifshitz scaling symmetry. We discuss the optical conductivity in the new dual phase and find interesting behavior at low frequencies where it shows a "Drude peak". The resistivity varies with temperature in a non-monotonic way and displays a minimum at low temperatures which is reminiscent of the celebrated Kondo effect.

Ergoregion instability of black hole mimickers

Ultra-compact, horizonless objects such as gravastars, boson stars, wormholes and superspinars can mimick most of the properties of black holes. Here we show that these "black hole mimickers" will most likely develop a strong ergoregion instability when rapidly spinning. Instability timescales range between 10^-5 s and 1 weeks depending on the object, its mass and its angular momentum. For a wide range of parameters the instability is truly effective. This provides a strong indication that astrophysical ultra-compact objects with large rotation are black holes.

Microscopic entropy of black holes and AdS_2 quantum gravity

Quantum gravity (QG) on two-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime (AdS_2) takes always the form of a chiral conformal field theory (CFT). However, the actual content of the CFT, and in particular its central charge, depends on the background values of the dilaton and Maxwell field. We review the main features of AdS_2 QG with linear dilaton and of AdS_2 QG with constant dilaton and Maxwell field. We also show that the 3D charged Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black hole interpolates between these two versions of AdS_2 QG. Applications to the computation of the microscopic entropy of black holes are also discussed.

Near-horizon limit of the charged BTZ black hole and AdS_2 quantum gravity

We show that the 3D charged Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole solution interpolates between two different 2D AdS spacetimes: a near-extremal, near-horizon AdS_2 geometry with constant dilaton and U(1) field and an asymptotic AdS_2 geometry with a linear dilaton. Thus, the charged BTZ black hole can be considered as interpolating between the two different formulations proposed until now for AdS_2 quantum gravity. In both cases the theory is the chiral half of a 2D CFT and describes, respectively, Brown-Hennaux-like boundary deformations and near-horizon excitations. The central charge c_as of the asymptotic CFT is determined by 3D Newton constant G and the AdS length l, c_as=3l/G, whereas that of the near-horizon CFT also depends on the U(1) charge Q, c_nh \propto l Q/\sqrt G.

Acoustic analogs of two-dimensional black holes

We present a general method for constructing acoustic analogs of the black hole solutions of two-dimensional (2D) dilaton gravity. Because by dimensional reduction every spherically symmetric, four-dimensional (4D) black hole admits a 2D description, the method can be also used to construct analogue models of 4D black holes. We also show that after fixing the gauge degrees of freedom the 2D gravitational dynamics is equivalent to an one-dimensional fluid dynamics. This enables us to find a natural definition of mass $M$, temperature $T$ and entropy $S$ of the acoustic black hole. In particular the first principle of thermodynamics $dM=TdS$ becomes a consequence of the fluid dynamics equations. We also discuss the general solutions of the fluid dynamics and two particular cases, the 2D Anti-de sitter black hole and the 4D Schwarzschild black hole.

An Einstein-like theory of gravity with a non-newtonian weak-field limit

We propose a model describing Einstein gravity coupled to a scalar field with an exponential potential. We show that the weak-field limit of the model has static solutions given by a gravitational potential behaving for large distances as \ln r . The Newtonian term GM/r appears only as subleading. Our model can be used to give a phenomenological explanation of the rotation curves of the galaxies without postulating the presence of dark matter. This can be achieved only by giving up at galactic scales Einstein equivalence principle.

Open Strings, Holography and Stochastic Processes

We use the correspondence between string states and local operators on the world-sheet boundary defined by vertex operators in open string theory to put in correspondence, holographically, the bosonic open string with the large N limit of a mechanical system living on the world-sheet boundary. We give a natural interpretation of this system in terms of a one-dimensional stochastic process and show that the correspondence takes the form of a map between two conformal field theories with central charge c=24 and c=1.

We show that the duality group of the 4d theory is realized in two dimensions in terms of Weyl transformations of the metric. The dualities of 3D dilaton gravity

We investigate Brans-Dicke dilaton gravity theories in 2+1 dimensions. We show that the reduced field equations for solutions with diagonal metric and depending only on one spacetime coordinate have a continuous O(2) symmetry. Using this symmetry we derive general static and cosmological solutions of the theory. The action of the discrete group O(2,Z) on the space of the solutions is discussed. Three-dimensional string effective theory and three-dimensional general relativity are discussed in detail. Trace anomaly and Hawking effect in generic 2D dilaton gravity theories

Black hole solutions in the context of a generic matter-coupled two-dimensional dilaton gravity theory are discussed both at the classical and semiclassical level. Starting from general assumptions, a criterion for the existence of black holes is given. The relationship between conformal anomaly and Hawking radiation is extended to a broad class of two-dimensional dilaton gravity models. A general and simple formula relating the magnitude of the Hawking effect to the dilaton potential evaluated on the horizon is derived.

Cosmological and Wormhole Solutions in Low-Energy Effective String Theory

We derive and study a class of cosmological and wormhole solutions of low-energy effective string field theory. We consider a general four-dimensional string effective action where moduli of the compactified manifold and the electromagnetic field are present. The cosmological solutions of the two-dimensional effective theory obtained by dimensional reduction of the former are discussed. In particular we demonstrate that the two-dimensional theory possesses a scale-factor duality invariance. Euclidean four-dimensional instantons describing the nucleation of the baby universes are found and the probability amplitude for the nucleation process is given.
