Deeply virtual Compton scattering using a positron beam in Hall-C at Jefferson Lab

We propose to use the High Momentum Spectrometer of Hall C combined with the Neutral Particle Spectrometer (NPS) to perform high precision measurements of the Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) cross section using a beam of positrons. The combination of measurements with oppositely charged incident beams is the only unambiguous way to disentangle the contribution of the DVCS$^2$ term in the photon electroproduction cross section from its interference with the Bethe-Heitler amplitude. This provides a stronger way to constrain the Generalized Parton Distributions of the nucleon. A wide range of kinematics accessible with an 11 GeV beam off an unpolarized proton target will be covered. The $Q^2-$dependence of each contribution will be measured independently.

Lithium-ion battery thermal-electrochemical model-based state estimation using orthogonal collocation and a modified extended Kalman filter

This paper investigates the state estimation of a high-fidelity spatially resolved thermal- electrochemical lithium-ion battery model commonly referred to as the pseudo two-dimensional model. The partial-differential algebraic equations (PDAEs) constituting the model are spatially discretised using Chebyshev orthogonal collocation enabling fast and accurate simulations up to high C-rates. This implementation of the pseudo-2D model is then used in combination with an extended Kalman filter algorithm for differential-algebraic equations to estimate the states of the model. The state estimation algorithm is able to rapidly recover the model states from current, voltage and temperature measurements. Results show that the error on the state estimate falls below 1 % in less than 200 s despite a 30 % error on battery initial state-of-charge and additive measurement noise with 10 mV and 0.5 K standard deviations.

Breakdown of QCD Factorization for P-Wave Quarkonium Production at Low Transverse Momentum

Quarkonium production at low transverse momentum in hadron collisions can be used to extract Transverse-Momentum-Dependent(TMD) gluon distribution functions, if TMD factorization holds there. We show that TMD factorization for the case of P-wave quarkonium with $J^{PC}=0^{++}, 2^{++}$ holds at one-loop level, but is violated beyond one-loop level. TMD factorization for other P-wave quarkonium is also violated already at one-loop.

Transverse Momentum Dependent Factorization for Quarkonium Production at Low Transverse Momentum

Quarkonium production in hadron collisions at low transverse momentum $q_\perp \ll M$ with $M$ as the quarkonium mass can be used for probing transverse momentum dependent (TMD) gluon distributions. For this purpose, one needs to establish the TMD factorization for the process. We examine the factorization at the one-loop level for the production of $η_c$ or $η_b$. The perturbative coefficient in the factorization is determined at one-loop accuracy. Comparing the factorization derived at tree level and that beyond the tree level, a soft factor is, in general, needed to completely cancel soft divergences. We have also discussed possible complications of TMD factorization of p-wave quarkonium production.

Excitations in a quantum spin liquid with random bonds

We present results of inelastic neutron scattering study on two bond disordered quasi twodimensional quantum magnets (C$_4$H$_12$N$_2$)Cu$_2$(Cl$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_6$ with x=0.035 and 0.075. We observe the increase of spin gap, reduction of magnon bandwidth and a decrease of magnon lifetimes compared to x=0 sample. Additional magnon damping is observed at higher energies away from zone center which is found to follow the density of single particle states.

Field-induced criticality in a gapped quantum magnet with bond disorder

Neutron diffraction and calorimetric measurements are used to study the field-induced quantum phase transition in piperazinium-Cu$_2$(Cl$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_6$ ($x=0$, x=3.5% and x=7.5%), a prototypical quantum antiferromagnet with random bonds. The critical indexes $ϕ$ and $β$ are determined. The findings contradict some original predictions for Bose Glass based on the assumption $z=d$, but are consistent with recent theoretical results implying $z<d$. Inelastic neutron experiments reveal that disorder has a profound effect on the lowest-energy magnetic gap excitation in the system.

Crystals for neutron scattering studies of quantum magnetism

We review a strategy for targeted synthesis of large single crystal samples of prototype quantum magnets for inelastic neutron scattering experiments. Four case studies of organic copper halogenide S=1/2 systems are presented. They are meant to illustrate that exciting experimental results pertaining to forefront many-body quantum physics can be obtained on samples grown using very simple techniques, standard laboratory equipment, and almost no experience in in advanced crystal growth techniques.

Magnetic transition and spin fluctuations in the unconventional antiferromagnetic compound Yb3Pt4

Muon spin rotation and relaxation measurements have been carried out on the unconventional antiferromagnet Yb_3Pt_4. Oscillations are observed below T_N = 2.22(1) K, consistent with the antiferromagnetic (AFM) Neel temperature observed in bulk experiments. In agreement with neutron diffraction experiments the oscillation frequency omega_ mu(T) follows a S = 1/2 mean-field temperature dependence, yielding a quasistatic local field 1.71(2) kOe at T = 0. A crude estimate gives an ordered moment of ~0.66 mu_B at T = 0, comparable to 0.81 mu_B from neutron diffraction. As T approaches T_N from above the dynamic relaxation rate lambda_d exhibits no critical slowing down, consistent with a mean-field transition. In the AFM phase a T-linear fit to lambda_d(T), appropriate to a Fermi liquid, yields highly enhanced values of lambda_d/T and the Korringa constant K_ mu^2 T/lambda_d, with K_ mu the estimated muon Knight shift. A strong suppression of lambda_d by applied field is observed in the AFM phase. These properties are consistent with the observed large Sommerfeld-Wilson and Kadowaki-Woods ratios in Yb_3Pt_4 (although the data do not discriminate between Fermi-liquid and non-Fermi-liquid states), and suggest strong enhancement of q ~ 0 spin correlations between large-Fermi-volume band quasiparticles in the AFM phase of Yb_3Pt_4.

Coexistence of full which-path information and interference in Wheelers delayed choice experiment with photons

We present a computer simulation model that is a one-to-one copy of an experimental realization of Wheeler's delayed choice experiment that employs a single photon source and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer composed of a 50/50 input beam splitter and a variable output beam splitter with adjustable reflection coefficient $R$ (V. Jacques {\sl et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 220402 (2008)). For $0\le R\le 0.5$, experimentally measured values of the interference visibility $V$ and the path distinguishability $D$, a parameter quantifying the which-path information WPI, are found to fulfill the complementary relation $V^2+D^2\le 1$, thereby allowing to obtain partial WPI while keeping interference with limited visibility. The simulation model that is solely based on experimental facts, that satisfies Einstein's criterion of local causality and that does not rely on any concept of quantum theory or of probability theory, reproduces quantitatively the averages calculated from quantum theory. Our results prove that it is possible to give a particle-only description of the experiment, that one can have full WPI even if D=0, V=1 and therefore that the relation $V^2+D^2\le 1$ cannot be regarded as quantifying the notion of complementarity.
