KMS states on Cc∗(N2)C_c^{*}(\mathbb{N}^2)

Let Cc∗(N2)C_c^{*}(\mathbb{N}^{2}) be the universal C∗C^{*}-algebra generated by a semigroup of isometries {v(m,n):m,n∈N}\{v_{(m,n)}: m,n \in \mathbb{N}\} whose range projections commute. We analyse the structure of KMS states on Cc∗(N2)C_{c}^{*}(\mathbb{N}^2) for the time evolution determined by a homomorphism c:Z2→Rc:\mathbb{Z}^{2} \to \mathbb{R}. In contrast to the reduced version Cred∗(N2)C_{red}^{*}(\mathbb{N}^{2}), we show that the set of KMS states on Cc∗(N2)C_{c}^{*}(\mathbb{N}^{2}) has a rich structure. In particular, we exhibit uncountably many extremal KMS states of type I, II and III.

Representations of the weak Weyl commutation relation

Let GG be a locally compact abelian group with Pontraygin dual G^\widehat{G}. Suppose PP is a closed subsemigroup of GG containing the identity element 00. We assume that PP has dense interior and PP generates GG. Let U:={Uχ}χ∈G^U:=\{U_χ\}_{χ\in \widehat{G}} be a strongly continuous group of unitaries and let V:={Va}a∈PV:=\{V_{a}\}_{a \in P} be a strongly continuous semigroup of isometries. We call (U,V)(U,V) a weak Weyl pair if UχVa=χ(a)VaUχ U_χV_{a}=χ(a)V_{a}U_χ for every χ∈G^χ\in \widehat{G} and for every a∈Pa \in P. We work out the representation theory (the factorial and the irreducible representations) of the above commutation relation under the assumption that {VaVa∗:a∈P}\{V_{a}V_{a}^{*}:a \in P\} is a commuting family of projections. Not only does this generalise the results of [4] and [5], our proof brings out the Morita equivalence that lies behind the results. For P=[0,∞)×[0,∞)P=[0,\infty)\times [0,\infty), we demonstrate that if we drop the commutativity assumption on the range projections, then the representation theory of the weak Weyl commutation relation becomes very complicated.

On the existence of E0E_{0}-semigroups -- the multiparameter case

Let P⊂RdP \subset \mathbb{R}^{d} be a closed convex cone. Assume that PP is pointed, i.e. the intersection P∩−P={0}P \cap -P=\{0\} and PP is spanning, i.e. P−P=RdP-P=\mathbb{R}^{d}. Denote the interior of PP by ΩΩ. Let EE be a product system over ΩΩ. We show that there exists an infinite dimensional separable Hilbert space H\mathcal{H} and a semigroup α:={αx}x∈Pα:=\{α_x\}_{x \in P} of unital normal ∗*-endomorphisms of B(H)B(\mathcal{H}) such that EE is isomorphic to the product system associated to αα.

Fractional Brownian motion time-changed by gamma and inverse gamma process

Many real time-series exhibit behavior adequate to long range dependent data. Additionally very often these time-series have constant time periods and also have characteristics similar to Gaussian processes although they are not Gaussian. Therefore there is need to consider new classes of systems to model these kind of empirical behavior. Motivated by this fact in this paper we analyze two processes which exhibit long range dependence property and have additional interesting characteristics which may be observed in real phenomena. Both of them are constructed as the superposition of fractional Brownian motion (FBM) and other process. In the first case the internal process, which plays role of the time, is the gamma process while in the second case the internal process is its inverse. We present in detail their main properties paying main attention to the long range dependence property. Moreover, we show how to simulate these processes and estimate their parameters. We propose to use a novel method based on rescaled modified cumulative distribution function for estimation of parameters of the second considered process. This method is very useful in description of rounded data, like waiting times of subordinated processes delayed by inverse subordinators. By using the Monte Carlo method we show the effectiveness of proposed estimation procedures.

Toeplitz algebras associated to Endomorphisms of Ore semigroups

In this paper, we consider the Toeplitz algebra associated to actions of Ore semigroups on C∗C^{*}-algebras. In particular, we consider injective and surjective actions of such semigroups. We use the theory of groupoid dynamical systems to represent the Toeplitz algebra as a groupoid crossed product. We also discuss the K-theory of the Toeplitz algebra in some examples. For instance, we show that for the semigroup of positive matrices, the K-theory of the associated Toeplitz algebra vanishes.

C*-algebras associated to topological Ore semigroups

Let GG be a locally compact group and P⊂GP \subset G be a closed Ore semigroup containing the identity element. Let $V: P \to B(\clh)$ be a representation such that for every a∈Pa \in P, VaV_{a} is an isometry and the final projections of {Va:a∈P}\{V_{a}: a \in P\} commute. In this article, we study the C∗C^{*}-algebra WV(P,G)\mathcal{W}_{V}(P,G), generated by {∫f(a)Vada:f∈L1(P)}\{\int f(a)V_{a} da: f \in L^{1}(P)\}. We show that there exists a universal C∗C^{*}-algebra, which admits a groupoid description, of which WV(P,G)\mathcal{W}_{V}(P,G) is a quotient. If P=GP=G, then this universal algebra is just C∗(G)C^{*}(G).

On a construction due to Khoshkam and Skandalis

In this paper, we consider the Wiener Hopf algebra, denoted W(A,P,G,α)\mathcal{W}(A,P,G,α), associated to an action of a discrete subsemigroup PP of a group GG on a C∗C^{*}-algebra AA. We show that W(A,P,G,α)\mathcal{W}(A,P,G,α) can be represented as a groupoid crossed product. As an application, we show that when P=Fn+P=\mathbb{F}_{n}^{+}, the free semigroup on nn generators, the KK-theory of W(A,P,G,α)\mathcal{W}(A,P,G,α) and the KK-theory of AA coincides.

A computation with the Connes-Thom isomorphism

Let A∈Mn(R)A \in M_{n}(\mathbb{R}) be an invertible matrix. Consider the semi-direct product Rn⋊Z\mathbb{R}^{n} \rtimes \mathbb{Z} where Z\mathbb{Z} acts on Rn\mathbb{R}^{n} by matrix multiplication. Consider a strongly continuous action (α,τ)(α,τ) of Rn⋊Z\mathbb{R}^{n} \rtimes \mathbb{Z} on a C∗C^{*}-algebra BB where αα is a strongly continuous action of Rn\mathbb{R}^{n} and ττ is an automorphism. The map ττ induces a map τ~\widetildeτ on B⋊αRnB \rtimes_α \mathbb{R}^{n}. We show that, at the KK-theory level, ττ commutes with the Connes-Thom map if det⁡(A)>0\det(A)>0 and anticommutes if det⁡(A)<0\det(A)<0. As an application, we recompute the KK-groups of the Cuntz-Li algebra associated to an integer dilation matrix.

Inverse semigroups and the Cuntz-Li algebras

In this paper, we apply the theory of inverse semigroups to the C∗C^{*}-algebra U[Z]U[\mathbb{Z}] considered in \cite{Cuntz}. We show that the C∗C^{*}-algebra U[Z]U[\mathbb{Z}] is generated by an inverse semigroup of partial isometries. We explicity identify the groupoid Gtight\mathcal{G}_{tight} associated to the inverse semigroup and show that Gtight\mathcal{G}_{tight} is exactly the same groupoid obtained in \cite{Cuntz-Li}.

FIR colours and SEDs of nearby galaxies observed with Herschel

We present infrared colours (in the 25-500 mic spectral range) and UV to radio continuum spectral energy distributions of a sample of 51 nearby galaxies observed with SPIRE on Herschel. The observed sample includes all morphological classes, from quiescent ellipticals to active starbursts. Active galaxies have warmer colour temperatures than normal spirals. In ellipticals hosting a radio galaxy, the far-infrared (FIR) emission is dominated bynthe synchrotron nuclear emission. The colour temperature of the cold dust is higher in quiescent E-S0a than in star-forming systems probably because of the different nature of their dust heating sources (evolved stellar populations, X-ray, fast electrons) and dust grain properties. In contrast to the colour temperature of the warm dust, the f350/f500 index sensitive to the cold dust decreases with star formation and increases with metallicity, suggesting an overabundance of cold dust or an emissivity parameter beta<2 in low metallicity, active systems.

Herschel photometric observations of the low metallicity dwarf galaxy NGC 1705

We present Herschel SPIRE and PACS photometeric observations of the low metallicity (Z ~ 0.35 solar) nearby dwarf galaxy, NGC 1705, in six wavelength bands as part of the Dwarf Galaxy Survey guaranteed time Herschel Key Program. We confirm the presence of two dominant circumnuclear IR-bright regions surrounding the central super star cluster that had been previously noted at mid-IR wavelengths and in the sub-mm by LABOCA. On constructing a global spectral energy distribution using the SPIRE and PACS photometry, in conjunction with archival IR measurements, we note the presence of an excess at sub-mm wavelengths. This excess suggests the presence of a significant cold dust component within NGC 1705 and was modeled as an additional cold component in the SED. Although alternative explanations for the sub-mm excess beyond 350 microns, such as changes to the dust emissivity cannot be ruled out, the most likely explanation for the observed submillimetre excess is that of an additional cold dust component.

Herschel photometric observations of the nearby low metallicity irregular galaxy NGC 6822

We present the first Herschel PACS and SPIRE images of the low-metallicity galaxy NGC6822 observed from 70 to 500 mu and clearly resolve the HII regions with PACS and SPIRE. We find that the ratio 250/500 is dependent on the 24 mu surface brightness in NGC6822, which would locally link the heating processes of the coldest phases of dust in the ISM to the star formation activity. We model the SEDs of some regions HII regions and less active regions across the galaxy and find that the SEDs of HII regions show warmer ranges of dust temperatures. We derive very high dust masses when graphite is used in our model to describe carbon dust. Using amorphous carbon, instead, requires less dust mass to account for submm emission due to its lower emissivity properties. This indicates that SED models including Herschel constraints may require different dust properties than commonly used.

K-groups of the quantum homogeneous space SUq(n)/SUq(n−2)SU_{q}(n)/SU_{q}(n-2)

Quantum Steiffel manifolds were introduced by Vainerman and Podkolzin in \cite{VP}. They classified the irreducible representations of their underlying C∗C^*-algebras. Here we compute the K groups of the quantum homogeneous spaces SUq(n)/SUq(n−2),n≥3SU_{q}(n)/SU_{q}(n-2), n\ge 3. Specializing to the case n=3n=3 we show that the fundamental unitary for quantum SU(3)SU(3) is nontrivial and is a unimodular element in K1K_1.

The Herschel Space Observatory view of dust in M81

We use Herschel Space Observatory data to place observational constraints on the peak and Rayleigh-Jeans slope of dust emission observed at 70-500 microns in the nearby spiral galaxy M81. We find that the ratios of wave bands between 160 and 500 microns are primarily dependent on radius but that the ratio of 70 to 160 micron emission shows no clear dependence on surface brightness or radius. These results along with analyses of the spectral energy distributions imply that the 160-500 micron emission traces 15-30 K dust heated by evolved stars in the bulge and disc whereas the 70 micron emission includes dust heated by the active galactic nucleus and young stars in star forming regions.

The weak heat kernel asymptotic expansion and the quantum double suspension

In this paper we are concerned with the construction of a general principle that will allow us to produce regular spectral triples with finite and simple dimension spectrum. We introduce the notion of weak heat kernel asymptotic expansion (WHKAE) property of a spectral triple and show that the weak heat kernel asymptotic expansion allows one to conclude that the spectral triple is regular with finite simple dimension spectrum. The usual heat kernel expansion implies this property. Finally we show that WHKAE is stable under quantum double suspension, a notion introduced by Hong and Szymanski. Therefore quantum double suspending compact Riemannian spin manifolds iteratively we get many examples of regular spectral triples with finite simple dimension spectrum. This covers all the odd dimensional quantum spheres. Our methods also apply to the case of noncommutative torus.
