Localized itinerant electrons and unique magnetic properties of SrRu2O6

SrRu2O6 has unique magnetic properties. It is characterized by a very high Néel temperature, despite its quasi-two-dimensional structure, and has a magnetic moment more than twice reduced compared to the formal ionic count. First principles calculations show that only an ideal Neel ordering in the Ru plane is possible, with no other metastable magnetic solutions, and, highly unusually, yield dielectric gaps for both antiferromagnetic and nonmagnetic states. We demonstrate that this strange behavior is the result of the formation of very specific electronic objects, recently suggested for a geometrically similar Na2IrO3 compound, whereby each electron is well localized on a particular Ru6 hexagon, and completely delocalized over the corresponding six Ru sites, thus making the compound $both$ strongly localized and highly itinerant.

Ruthenium-Europium configuration in the Eu2Ru2O7 pyrochlore

The magnetic and electronic properties of Eu2Ru2O7 are discussed in terms of the local ruthenium and europium coordinations, electronic band structure calculations and molecular orbital energy levels. A preliminary electronic structure was calculated within the LDA and LSDA+U approximations. The molecular orbital energy level diagrams have been used to interpret the Eu-Ru ligand spectrum and the ensuing magnetic properties. The orbital hybridizations and bonds are discussed.

CdV2O4: A rare example of a collinear multiferroic spinel

By studying the dielectric properties of the geometrically frustrated spinel CdV2O4, we observe ferroelectricity developing at the transition into the collinear antiferromagnetic ground state. In this multiferroic spinel, ferroelectricity is driven by local magnetostriction and not by the more common scenario of spiral magnetism. The experimental findings are corroborated by ab-initio calculations of the electric polarization and the underlying spin and orbital order. The results point towards a charge rearrangement due to dimerization, where electronic correlations and the proximity to the insulator-metal transition play an important role.
