Spectral and scattering theory for topological crystals perturbed by infinitely many new edges

In this paper we investigate the spectral and scattering theory for operators acting on topological crystals and on their perturbations. A special attention is paid to perturbations obtained by the addition of an infinite number of edges, and / or by the removal of a finite number of them, but perturbations of the underlying measures and perturbations by the addition of a multiplication operator are also considered. The description of the nature of the spectrum of the resulting operators, and the existence and completeness of the wave operators are standard outcomes for these investigations.

On radial Schroedinger operators with a Coulomb potential: General boundary conditions

This paper presents the spectral analysis of 1-dimensional Schroedinger operator on the half-line whose potential is a linear combination of the Coulomb term 1/r and the centrifugal term 1/r^2. The coupling constants are allowed to be complex, and all possible boundary conditions at 0 are considered. The resulting closed operators are organized in three holomorphic families. These operators are closely related to the Whittaker equation. Solutions of this equation are thoroughly studied in a large appendix to this paper. Various special cases of this equation are analyzed, namely the degenerate, the Laguerre and the doubly degenerate cases. A new solution to the Whittaker equation in the doubly degenerate case is also introduced.

Vortices in stratified protoplanetary disks : From baroclinic instability to vortex layers

Large scale vortices could play a key role in the evolution of protoplanetary disks, particularly in the dead-zone where no turbulence associated with magnetic field is expected. Their possible formation by the subcritical baroclinic instability is a complex issue due to the vertical structure of the disk and to the elliptical instability.} {In two-dimensional disks the baroclinic instability is studied as a function of the thermal transfer efficiency. In three-dimensional disks we explore the importance of radial and vertical stratification on the processes of vortex formation and amplification.} {Numerical simulations are performed using a fully compressible hydrodynamical code based on a second order finite volume method. We assume a perfect gas law in inviscid disk models in which heat transfer is due to either relaxation or diffusion.} {In 2D, the baroclinic instability with thermal relaxation leads to the formation of large-scale vortices, which are unstable with respect to the elliptic instability. In the presence of heat diffusion, hollow vortices are formed which evolve into vortical structures with a turbulent core. In 3D, the disk stratification is found to be unstable in a finite layer which can include the mid-plane or not. When the unstable layer contains the mid-plane, the 3D baroclinic instability with thermal relaxation is found to develop first in the unstable layer as in 2D, producing large-scale vortices. These vortices are then stretched out in the stable layer, creating long-lived columnar vortical structures extending through the height of the disk. They are also found to be the source of internal vortex layers that develop across the whole disk along baroclinic critical layer surfaces, and form new vortices in the upper region of the disk.} {In three-dimensional disks, vortices can survive for a very long time if the production of vorticity by...

Levinson's theorem: an index theorem in scattering theory

A topological version of Levinson's theorem is presented. Its proof relies on a C*-algebraic framework which is introduced in detail. Various scattering systems are considered in this framework, and more coherent explanations for the corrections due to thresholds effects or for the regularization procedure are provided. Potential scattering, point interactions, Friedrichs model and Aharonov-Bohm operators are part of the examples which are presented. Every concepts from scattering theory or from K-theory are introduced from scratch.

Low energy spectral and scattering theory for relativistic Schroedinger operators

Spectral and scattering theory at low energy for the relativistic Schroedinger operator are investigated. Some striking properties at thresholds of this operator are exhibited, as for example the absence of 0-energy resonance. Low energy behavior of the wave operators and of the scattering operator are studied, and stationary expressions in terms of generalized eigenfunctions are proved for the former operators. Under slightly stronger conditions on the perturbation the absolute continuity of the spectrum on the positive semi axis is demonstrated. Finally, an explicit formula for the action of the free evolution group is derived. Such a formula, which is well known in the usual Schroedinger case, was apparently not available in the relativistic setting.

One-dimensional Dirac operators with zero-range interactions: Spectral, scattering, and topological results

The spectral and scattering theory for 1-dimensional Dirac operators with mass $m$ and with zero-range interactions are fully investigated. Explicit expressions for the wave operators and for the scattering operator are provided. These new formulae take place in a representation which links, in a suitable way, the energies $-\infty$ and $+\infty$, and which emphasizes the role of $\pm m$. Finally, a topological version of Levinson's theorem is deduced, with the threshold effects at $\pm m$ automatically taken into account.

New expressions for the wave operators of Schroedinger operators in R^3

We prove new and explicit formulas for the wave operators of Schroedinger operators in R^3. These formulas put into light the very special role played by the generator of dilations and validate the topological approach of Levinson's theorem introduced in a previous publication. Our results hold for general (not spherically symmetric) potentials decaying fast enough at infinity, without any assumption on the absence of eigenvalue or resonance at 0-energy.

A few results on Mourre theory in a two-Hilbert spaces setting

We introduce a natural framework for dealing with Mourre theory in an abstract two-Hilbert spaces setting. In particular a Mourre estimate for a pair of self-adjoint operators (H,A) is deduced from a similar estimate for a pair of self-adjoint operators (H_0,A_0) acting in an auxiliary Hilbert space. A new criterion for the completeness of the wave operators in a two-Hilbert spaces setting is also presented.

Commutator methods for unitary operators

We present an improved version of commutator methods for unitary operators under a weak regularity condition. Once applied to a unitary operator, the method typically leads to the absence of singularly continuous spectrum and to the local finiteness of point spectrum. Large families of locally smooth operators are also exhibited. Half of the paper is dedicated to applications, and a special emphasize is put on the study of cocycles over irrational rotations. It is apparently the first time that commutator methods are applied in the context of rotation algebras, for the study of their generators.

Spectral analysis and time-dependent scattering theory on manifolds with asymptotically cylindrical ends

We review the spectral analysis and the time-dependent approach of scattering theory for manifolds with asymptotically cylindrical ends. For the spectral analysis, higher order resolvent estimates are obtained via Mourre theory for both short-range and long-range behaviors of the metric and the perturbation at infinity. For the scattering theory, the existence and asymptotic completeness of the wave operators is proved in a two-Hilbert spaces setting. A stationary formula as well as mapping properties for the scattering operator are derived. The existence of time delay and its equality with the Eisenbud-Wigner time delay is finally presented. Our analysis mainly differs from the existing literature on the choice of a simpler comparison dynamics as well as on the complementary use of time-dependent and stationary scattering theories.

Time delay for an abstract quantum scattering process

In this short review paper, we discuss the concept of time delay for an abstract quantum scattering system. Its definition in terms of sojourn times is explained as well as its identity with the so-called Eisenbud-Wigner time delay. Necessary and natural conditions for such a construction are introduced and thoroughly discussed. Assumptions and statements are precisely formulated but proofs are contained in two companion papers written in collaboration with R. Tiedra de Aldecoa.

Levinson's theorem and higher degree traces for Aharonov-Bohm operators

We study Levinson type theorems for the family of Aharonov-Bohm models from different perspectives. The first one is purely analytical involving the explicit calculation of the wave-operators and allowing to determine precisely the various contributions to the left hand side of Levinson's theorem, namely those due to the scattering operator, the terms at 0-energy and at infinite energy. The second one is based on non-commutative topology revealing the topological nature of Levinson's theorem. We then include the parameters of the family into the topological description obtaining a new type of Levinson's theorem, a higher degree Levinson's theorem. In this context, the Chern number of a bundle defined by a family of projections on bound states is explicitly computed and related to the result of a 3-trace applied on the scattering part of the model.

Magnetic pseudodifferential operators with coefficients in C*-algebras

In previous articles, a magnetic pseudodifferential calculus and a family of C*-algebras associated with twisted dynamical systems were introduced and the connections between them have been established. We extend this formalism to symbol classes of Hörmander type with an x-behavior modelized by an abelian C*-algebra. Some of these classes generate C*-algebras associated with the twisted dynamical system. We show the relevance of these classes to the spectral analysis of pseudodifferential operators with anisotropic symbols and magnetic fields.
