Levinson's theorem and higher degree traces for Aharonov-Bohm operators

We study Levinson type theorems for the family of Aharonov-Bohm models from different perspectives. The first one is purely analytical involving the explicit calculation of the wave-operators and allowing to determine precisely the various contributions to the left hand side of Levinson's theorem, namely those due to the scattering operator, the terms at 0-energy and at infinite energy. The second one is based on non-commutative topology revealing the topological nature of Levinson's theorem. We then include the parameters of the family into the topological description obtaining a new type of Levinson's theorem, a higher degree Levinson's theorem. In this context, the Chern number of a bundle defined by a family of projections on bound states is explicitly computed and related to the result of a 3-trace applied on the scattering part of the model.

Spectral triples and aperiodic order

We construct spectral triples for compact metric spaces (X, d). This provides us with a new metric d_s on X. We study its relation with the original metric d. When X is a subshift space, or a discrete tiling space, and d satisfies certain bounds we advocate that the property of d_s and d to be Lipschitz equivalent is a characterization of high order. For episturmian subshifts, we prove that d_s and d are Lipschitz equivalent if and only if the subshift is repulsive (or power free). For Sturmian subshifts this is equivalent to linear recurrence. For repetitive tilings we show that if their patches have equi-distributed frequencies then the two metrics are Lipschitz equivalent. Moreover, we study the zeta-function of the spectral triple and relate its abscissa of convergence to the complexity exponent of the subshift or the tiling. Finally, we derive Laplace operators from the spectral triples and compare our construction with that of Pearson and Bellissard.

Integer Cech Cohomology of Icosahedral Projection Tilings

The integer Cech cohomology of canonical projection tilings of dimension three and codimension three is derived. These formulae are then evaluated for several icosahedral tilings known from the literature. Rather surprisingly, the cohomologies of all these tilings turn out to have torsion. This is the case even for the Danzer tiling, which is, in some sense, the simplest of all icosahedral tilings. This result is in contrast to the case of two-dimensional canonical projection tilings, where many examples without torsion are known.

Simultaneous quantization of edge and bulk Hall conductivity

The edge Hall conductivity is shown to be an integer multiple of $e^2/h$ which is almost surely independent of the choice of the disordered configuration. Its equality to the bulk Hall conductivity given by the Kubo-Chern formula follows from K-theoretic arguments. This leads to quantization of the Hall conductance for any redistribution of the current in the sample. It is argued that in experiments at most a few percent of the total current can be carried by edge states.

Path Spaces and W-Fusion in Minimal Models

Product forms of characters of Virasoro minimal models are obtained which factorize into $(2,\odd)\times(3,\even)$ characters. These are related by generalized Rogers-Ramanujan identities to sum forms allowing for a quasiparticle interpretation. The corresponding dilogarithm identities are given and the factorization is used to analyse the related path space structure as well as the fusion of the maximally extended chiral algebra.
