Characterization of photoinduced normal state through charge density wave in superconducting YBa2_2Cu3_3O6.67_{6.67}

The normal state of high-Tc cuprates has been considered one of the essential topics in high-temperature superconductivity research. However, compared to the high magnetic fields study of it, understanding a photoinduced normal state remains elusive. Here, we explore a photoinduced normal state of YBa2_2Cu3_3O6.67_{6.67} (YBCO) through a charge density wave (CDW) with time-resolved resonant soft x-ray scattering, as well as a high-magnetic field x-ray scattering. In the non-equilibrium state in which people predict a quenched superconducting state based on the previous optical spectroscopies, we experimentally observed a similar analogy to the competition between superconductivity and CDW shown in the equilibrium state. We further observe that the broken pairing states in the superconducting CuO2_2 plane via the optical pump lead to nucleation of three-dimensional CDW precursor correlation, revealing that the photoinduced CDW is similar to phenomena shown under magnetic fields. Ultimately, these findings provide a critical clue that the characteristics of the photoinduced normal state show a solid resemblance to those under magnetic fields in equilibrium conditions.

Effect of pseudogap on electronic anisotropy in the strain dependence of the superconducting TcT_c of underdoped YBa2_2Cu3_3Oy_y

For orthorhombic superconductors we define thermodynamic anisotropy N≡dTc/dε22−dTc/dε11N \equiv d T_c/d ε_{22} - dT_c/d ε_{11} as the difference in how superconducting TcT_c varies with strains εiiε_{ii}, i=(1,2)i=(1, 2), along the in-plane directions. We study the hole doping (pp) dependence of NN on detwinned single crystals of underdoped YBa2_2Cu3_3Oy_y (YBCO) using ultrasound technique. While the structural orthorhombicity of YBCO reduces monotonically with decreasing doping over 0.065<p<0.160.065 <p<0.16, we find that the thermodynamic anisotropy shows an intriguing enhancement at intermediate doping level, which is of electronic origin. Our theoretical analysis shows that the enhancement of the electronic anisotropy can be related to the pseudogap potential in the electronic specturm that itself increases when the Mott insulating state is approached. Our results imply that the pseudogap is controlled by a local energy scale that can be tuned by varying the nearest neighbor Cu-Cu bond length. Our work opens the possibility to strain engineer the pseudogap potential to enhance the superconducting \Tc.

Extended superconducting dome of electron-doped cuprates after protect annealing revealed by ARPES

The electron-doped cuprates are usually characterized by a more robust antiferromagnetic phase and a much narrower superconducting (SC) dome than those of the hole-doped counterparts. Recently, bulk single crystals of Pr1.3-xLa0.7CexCuO4-δ (PLCCO) prepared by the protect annealing method have been studied extensively and revealed many intriguing properties that were different from those obtained from samples annealed by the conventional methods. Here, we report on a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of PLCCO single crystals after protect annealing. The results indicate that the actual electron concentration (nFS ) estimated from the Fermi-surface area is significantly larger than the Ce concentration x and the new nFS-based SC dome of PLCCO is more extended towards the overdoped side than the x-based SC dome derived for samples prepared using the conventional annealing method.

Charge density waves in YBa2_2Cu3_3O6.67_{6.67} probed by resonant x-ray scattering under uniaxial compression

We report a comprehensive Cu L3_3-edge resonant x-ray scattering study of two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) incommensurate charge correlations in single crystals of the underdoped high-temperature superconductor YBa2_2Cu3_3O6.67_{6.67} under uniaxial compression up to 1% along the two inequivalent Cu-O-Cu bond directions (a and b) in the CuO2_2 planes. The pressure response of the 2D charge correlations is symmetric: pressure along a enhances correlations along b, and vice versa. Our results imply that the underlying order parameter is uniaxial. In contrast, 3D long-range charge order is only observed along b in response to compression along a. Spectroscopic resonant x-ray scattering measurements show that the 3D charge order resides exclusively in the CuO2_2 planes and may thus be generic to the cuprates. We discuss implications of these results for models of electronic nematicity and for the interplay between charge order and superconductivity.

Localized bioconvection of Euglena caused by phototaxis in the lateral direction

Euglena, a swimming micro-organism, exhibited a characteristic bioconvection that was localized at the center of a sealed chamber under bright illumination to induce negative phototaxis. This localized pattern consisted of high-density spots, in which convection was found. These observations were reproduced by a mathematical model that was based on the phototaxis of individual cells in both the vertical and lateral directions. Our results indicate that this convection is maintained by upward swimming, as with general bioconvection, and the localization originates from lateral phototaxis.
