Interplay of Charge and Magnetic Orders in SmNiC$_2$ Mediated by Electron-Phonon Interaction

We investigate the interplay between charge density wave (CDW) instabilities and ferromagnetism in SmNiC$_2$ using diffuse and inelastic x-ray scattering together with Raman spectroscopy. We identify a soft acoustic phonon driving the incommensurate CDW (I-CDW) and uncover a second Kohn anomaly at the wave vector of the commensurate CDW (C-CDW) stabilized in other $R$NiC$_2$ members ($R=$ rare earth). The marked softening of both phonons and their contrasting evolution with temperature reveal a competition between the two ordering tendencies. Alongside pronounced anomalies in the temperature dependence of the zone center and soft phonons, we observe the collective amplitude mode of the CDW, which collapses abruptly as ferromagnetism sets in. Surprisingly, the Kohn anomalies persist in the ferromagnetic state despite the degradation of Fermi-surface nesting conditions. Our experimental findings, supported by ab initio calculations, highlight the central role of the electron-phonon interaction in driving the CDW formation and tuning the balance between competing charge and magnetic orders.

Effect of pseudogap on electronic anisotropy in the strain dependence of the superconducting $T_c$ of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$

For orthorhombic superconductors we define thermodynamic anisotropy $N \equiv d T_c/d ε_{22} - dT_c/d ε_{11}$ as the difference in how superconducting $T_c$ varies with strains $ε_{ii}$, $i=(1, 2)$, along the in-plane directions. We study the hole doping ($p$) dependence of $N$ on detwinned single crystals of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ (YBCO) using ultrasound technique. While the structural orthorhombicity of YBCO reduces monotonically with decreasing doping over $0.065 <p<0.16$, we find that the thermodynamic anisotropy shows an intriguing enhancement at intermediate doping level, which is of electronic origin. Our theoretical analysis shows that the enhancement of the electronic anisotropy can be related to the pseudogap potential in the electronic specturm that itself increases when the Mott insulating state is approached. Our results imply that the pseudogap is controlled by a local energy scale that can be tuned by varying the nearest neighbor Cu-Cu bond length. Our work opens the possibility to strain engineer the pseudogap potential to enhance the superconducting \Tc.

Absence of temperature-dependent phonon anomalies in Sr2IrO4 and Sr3Ir2O7

Following previous works reporting an anomalous behavior of several zone-center optical phonons across the magnetic transition of square lattice iridates Sr2IrO4 and Sr3Ir2O7, we have investigated the lattice dynamics as a function of momentum in these materials by means of high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS). The observed phonon energies and scattering intensities across the Brillouin zone are in excellent agreement with ab-initio lattice dynamical calculations based on non-magnetic density-functional-perturbation theory (DFPT). Our results do not evidence any renormalization of the phonons at finite momentum across the magnetic transition of Sr2IrO4. The only anomalous behavior was detected for the in-plane polarized longitudinal-acoustic phonon branch in Sr3Ir2O7, which anomalously softens towards low temperatures and might be related to anisotropic negative thermal expansion in this compound. No anomalies related to potential charge ordering were observed.

Anomalous pressure dependence of the electronic transport and anisotropy in SrIrO3 films

Iridate oxides display exotic physical properties that arise from the interplay between a large spin-orbit coupling and electron correlations. Here, we present a comprehensive study of the effects of hydrostatic pressure on the electronic transport properties of SrIrO3 (SIO), a system that has recently attracted a lot of attention as potential correlated Dirac semimetal. Our investigations on untwinned thin films of SIO reveal that the electrical resistivity of this material is intrinsically anisotropic and controlled by the orthorhombic distortion of the perovskite unit cell. These effects provide another evidence for the strong coupling between the electronic and lattice degrees of freedom in this class of compounds. Upon increasing pressure, a systematic increase of the transport anisotropies is observed. The anomalous pressure-induced changes of the resistivity cannot be accounted for by the pressure dependence of the density of the electron charge carriers, as inferred from Hall effect measurements. Moreover, pressure-induced rotations of the IrO6 octahedra likely occur within the distorted perovskite unit cell and affect electron mobility of this system.

Charge density waves in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.67}$ probed by resonant x-ray scattering under uniaxial compression

We report a comprehensive Cu L$_3$-edge resonant x-ray scattering study of two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) incommensurate charge correlations in single crystals of the underdoped high-temperature superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.67}$ under uniaxial compression up to 1% along the two inequivalent Cu-O-Cu bond directions (a and b) in the CuO$_2$ planes. The pressure response of the 2D charge correlations is symmetric: pressure along a enhances correlations along b, and vice versa. Our results imply that the underlying order parameter is uniaxial. In contrast, 3D long-range charge order is only observed along b in response to compression along a. Spectroscopic resonant x-ray scattering measurements show that the 3D charge order resides exclusively in the CuO$_2$ planes and may thus be generic to the cuprates. We discuss implications of these results for models of electronic nematicity and for the interplay between charge order and superconductivity.

Inelastic X-ray scattering studies of phonon dispersions in superconductors at high pressures

Electron-phonon interaction is of central importance for the electrical and heat transport properties of metals, and is directly responsible for charge-density-waves or (conventional) superconducting instabilities. The direct observation of phonon dispersion anomalies across electronic phase transitions can provide insightful information regarding the mechanisms underlying their formation. Here, we review the current status of phonon dispersion studies in superconductors under hydrostatic and uniaxial pressure. Advances in the instrumentation of high resolution inelastic X-ray scattering beamlines and pressure generating devices allow these measurements to be performed routinely at synchrotron beamlines worldwide.

Direct observation of charge order in underdoped and optimally doped Bi$_{2}$(Sr,La)$_{2}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

Charge order in underdoped and optimally doped high-$T_\mathrm{c}$ superconductors Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (Bi2201) is investigated by Cu $L_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). We have directly observed charge density modulation in the optimally doped Bi2201 at momentum transfer $Q_{\|} \simeq 0.23$ rlu, with smaller intensity and correlation length with respect to the underdoped sample. This demonstrates that short-range charge order in Bi2201 persists up to optimal doping, as in other hole-doped cuprates. We explored the nodal (diagonal) direction and found no charge order peak, confirming that charge order modulates only along the Cu-O bond directions. We measured the out-of-plane dependence of charge order, finding a flat response and no maxima at half integer \emph{L} values. This suggests there is no out-of-plane phase correlation in single layer Bi2201, at variance from YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ and La$_{2-x}$(Ba,Sr)$_x$CuO$_4$. Combining our results with data from the literature we assess that charge order in Bi2201 exists in a large doping range across the phase diagram, i.e. $0.07 \lesssim p \lesssim 0.16$, demonstrating thereby that it is intimately entangled with the antiferromagnetic background, the pseudogap and superconductivity.

Doping dependent charge order correlations in electron-doped cuprates

Understanding the interplay between charge order (CO) and other phenomena (e.g. pseudogap, antiferromagnetism, and superconductivity) is one of the central questions in the cuprate high-temperature superconductors. The discovery that similar forms of CO exist in both hole- and electron-doped cuprates opened a path to determine what subset of the CO phenomenology is universal to all the cuprates. Here, we use resonant x-ray scattering to measure the charge order correlations in electron-doped cuprates (La2-xCexCuO4 and Nd2-xCexCuO4) and their relationship to antiferromagnetism, pseudogap, and superconductivity. Detailed measurements of Nd2-xCexCuO4 show that CO is present in the x = 0.059 to 0.166 range, and that its doping dependent wavevector is consistent with the separation between straight segments of the Fermi surface. The CO onset temperature is highest between x = 0.106 and 0.166, but decreases at lower doping levels, indicating that it is not tied to the appearance of antiferromagnetic correlations or the pseudogap. Near optimal doping, where the CO wavevector is also consistent with a previously observed phonon anomaly, measurements of the CO below and above the superconducting transition temperature, or in a magnetic field, show that the CO is insensitive to superconductivity. Overall these findings indicate that, while verified in the electron-doped cuprates, material-dependent details determine whether the CO correlations acquire sufficient strength to compete for the ground state of the cuprates.

Long-range charge density wave proximity effect at cuprate-manganate interfaces

The interplay between charge density waves (CDWs) and high-temperature superconductivity is currently under intense investigation. Experimental research on this issue is difficult because CDW formation in bulk copper-oxides is strongly influenced by random disorder, and a long-range-ordered CDW state in high magnetic fields is difficult to access with spectroscopic and diffraction probes. Here we use resonant x-ray scattering in zero magnetic field to show that interfaces with the metallic ferromagnet La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$ greatly enhance CDW formation in the optimally doped high-temperature superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ ($\bf δ\sim 1$), and that this effect persists over several tens of nm. The wavevector of the incommensurate CDW serves as an internal calibration standard of the charge carrier concentration, which allows us to rule out any significant influence of oxygen non-stoichiometry, and to attribute the observed phenomenon to a genuine electronic proximity effect. Long-range proximity effects induced by heterointerfaces thus offer a powerful method to stabilize the charge density wave state in the cuprates, and more generally, to manipulate the interplay between different collective phenomena in metal oxides.

Patterning of two-dimensional electron systems in SrTiO3 based heterostructures using a CeO2 template

Two-dimensional electron systems found at the interface of SrTiO3-based oxide heterostructures often display anisotropic electric transport whose origin is currently under debate. To characterize transport along specific crystallographic directions, we developed a hard-mask patterning routine based on an amorphous CeO2 template layer. The technique allows preparing well-defined microbridges by conventional ultraviolet photolithography which, in comparison to standard techniques such as ion- or wet-chemical etching, does not induce any degradation of interfacial conductance. The patterning scheme is described in details and the successful production of microbridges based on amorphous Al2O3-SrTiO3 heterostructures is demonstrated. Significant anisotropic transport is observed for T < 30 K which is mainly related to impurity/defect scattering of charge carriers in these heterostructures.

Persistent paramagnons deep in the metallic phase of Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$IrO$_4$

We have studied the magnetic excitations of electron-doped Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$IrO$_4$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.10$) using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ir L$_3$-edge. The long range magnetic order is rapidly lost with increasing $x$, but two-dimensional short-range order (SRO) and dispersive magnon excitations with nearly undiminished spectral weight persist well into the metallic part of the phase diagram. The magnons in the SRO phase are heavily damped and exhibit anisotropic softening. Their dispersions are well described by a pseudospin-1/2 Heisenberg model with exchange interactions whose spatial range increases with doping. We also find a doping-independent high-energy magnetic continuum, which is not described by this model. The spin-orbit excitons arising from the pseudospin-3/2 manifold of the Ir ions broaden substantially in the SRO phase, but remain largely separated from the low-energy magnons. Pseudospin-1/2 models are therefore a good starting point for the theoretical description of the low-energy magnetic dynamics of doped iridates.

Soft phonon driven orbital order in CaMn7O12

We use variable-temperature x-ray thermal diffuse scattering and inelastic scattering to investigate the lattice dynamics in single crystals of multiferroic CaMn7O12 which undergo a series of orbital and magnetic transitions at low temperatures. Upon approaching the charge and orbital ordering temperature To=250 K from above, we observe intense diffuse scattering features and a pronounced optical phonon softening centered around the superstructure reflections of the incommensurately modulated structure. The phonon anomaly appears well above To and continuously increases upon cooling, following a canonical power-law temperature dependence that confirms the transition at To to be of second order and related to a soft-phonon lattice instability. Microscopic mechanisms for the incommensurate charge and orbital ordering based on competing interactions and on momentum dependent electron-phonon coupling could both account for the observed extended momentum width of the phonon softening. Our results highlight the importance of the lattice interactions in the physics of this magnetically induced ferroelectric system.

Collective nature of spin excitations in superconducting cuprates probed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

We used resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) with and without analysis of the scattered photon polarization, to study dispersive spin excitations in the high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O6+x over a wide range of doping levels (0.1 < x < 1). The excitation profiles were carefully monitored as the incident photon energy was detuned from the resonant condition, and the spin excitation energy was found to be independent of detuning for all x. These findings demonstrate that the largest fraction of the spin-flip RIXS profiles in doped cuprates arises from magnetic collective modes, rather than from incoherent particle-hole excitations as recently suggested theoretically [Benjamin et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 247002(2014)]. Implications for the theoretical description of the electron system in the cuprates are discussed.

Crystal growth and intrinsic magnetic behavior of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$

We report on the growth of stoichiometric Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ single crystals, which allow us to unveil their intrinsic magnetic properties. The effect of different growth conditions has been investigated for crystals grown by the flux method. We find that the magnetic response depends very sensitively on the details of the growth conditions. We assess the defect concentration based on magnetization, X-ray diffraction, Raman scattering, and optical conductivity measurements. We find that samples with a low concentration of electronically active defects show much reduced in-gap spectral weight in the optical conductivity and a pronounced two-magnon peak in the Raman scattering spectrum. A prolonged exposure at high temperature during the growth leads to higher defect concentration likely due to creation of oxygen vacancies. We further demonstrate a systematic intergrowth of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ phases by varying the growth temperature. Our results thus emphasize that revealing the intrinsic magnetic properties of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and related materials requires a scrupulous control of the crystal growth process.

Femtosecond x rays link melting of charge-density wave correlations and light-enhanced coherent transport in YBa2Cu3O6.6

We use femtosecond resonant soft x-ray diffraction to measure the optically stimulated ultrafast changes of charge density wave correlations in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.6. We find that when coherent interlayer transport is enhanced by optical excitation of the apical oxygen distortions, at least 50% of the in-plane charge density wave order is melted. These results indicate that charge ordering and superconductivity may be competing up to the charge ordering transition temperature, with the latter becoming a hidden phase that is accessible only by nonlinear phonon excitation.

Two-magnon Raman scattering and pseudospin-lattice interactions in Sr2IrO4 and Sr3Ir2O7

We have used Raman scattering to investigate the magnetic excitations and lattice dynamics in the prototypical spin-orbit Mott insulators Sr2IrO4 and Sr3Ir2O7. Both compounds exhibit pronounced two-magnon Raman scattering features with different energies, lineshapes, and temperature dependencies, which in part reflect the different influence of long-range frustrating exchange interactions. Additionally, we find strong Fano asymmetries in the lineshapes of low-energy phonon modes in both compounds, which disappear upon cooling below the antiferromagnetic ordering temperatures. These unusual phonon anomalies indicate that the spin-orbit coupling in Mott-insulating iridates is not sufficiently strong to quench the orbital dynamics in the paramagnetic state.

Charge order driven by Fermi-arc instability in Bi2201

The understanding of the origin of superconductivity in cuprates has been hindered by the apparent diversity of intertwining electronic orders in these materials. We combined resonant x-ray scattering (REXS), scanning-tunneling microscopy (STM), and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to observe a charge order that appears consistently in surface and bulk, and in momentum and real space within one cuprate family, Bi2201. The observed wave vectors rule out simple antinodal nesting in the single-particle limit but match well with a phenomenological model of a many-body instability of the Fermi arcs. Combined with earlier observations of electronic order in other cuprate families, these findings suggest the existence of a generic charge-ordered state in underdoped cuprates and uncover its intimate connection to the pseudogap regime.

Connection between charge-density-wave order and charge transport in the cuprate superconductors

Charge-density-wave (CDW) correlations within the quintessential CuO$_2$ planes have been argued to either cause [1] or compete with [2] the superconductivity in the cuprates, and they might furthermore drive the Fermi-surface reconstruction in high magnetic fields implied by quantum oscillation (QO) experiments for YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ (YBCO) [3] and HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg1201) [4]. Consequently, the observation of bulk CDW order in YBCO was a significant development [5,6,7]. Hg1201 features particularly high structural symmetry and recently has been demonstrated to exhibit Fermi-liquid charge transport in the relevant temperature-doping range of the phase diagram, whereas for YBCO and other cuprates this underlying property of the CuO$_2$ planes is partially or fully masked [8-10]. It therefore is imperative to establish if the pristine transport behavior of Hg1201 is compatible with CDW order. Here we investigate Hg1201 ($T_c$ = 72 K) via bulk Cu L-edge resonant X-ray scattering. We indeed observe CDW correlations in the absence of a magnetic field, although the correlations and competition with superconductivity are weaker than in YBCO. Interestingly, at the measured hole-doping level, both the short-range CDW and Fermi-liquid transport appear below the same temperature of about 200 K. Our result points to a unifying picture in which the CDW formation is preceded at the higher pseudogap temperature by $q$ = 0 magnetic order [11,12] and the build-up of significant dynamic antiferromagnetic correlations [13]. Furthermore, the smaller CDW modulation wave vector observed for Hg1201 is consistent with the larger electron pocket implied by both QO [4] and Hall-effect [14] measurements, which suggests that CDW correlations are indeed responsible for the low-temperature QO phenomenon.

Optically enhanced coherent transport in YBa2Cu3O6.5 by ultrafast redistribution of interlayer coupling

Nonlinear optical excitation of infrared active lattice vibrations has been shown to melt magnetic or orbital orders and to transform insulators into metals. In cuprates, this technique has been used to remove charge stripes and promote superconductivity, acting in a way opposite to static magnetic fields. Here, we show that excitation of large-amplitude apical oxygen distortions in the cuprate superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.5 promotes highly unconventional electronic properties. Below the superconducting transition temperature (Tc = 50 K), interbilayer coherence is transiently enhanced at the expense of intra-bilayer coupling. Strikingly, even above Tc a qualitatively similar effect is observed up to room temperature, with transient inter-bilayer coherence emerging from the incoherent ground state and similar transfer of spectral weight from high to low frequency. These observations are compatible with previous reports of an inhomogeneous normal state that retains important properties of a superconductor, in which light may be melting competing orders or dynamically synchronizing the interlayer phase. The transient redistribution of coherence discussed here could lead to new strategies to enhance superconductivity in steady state.

Optically induced coherent transport far above Tc in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6+x

We report on a photo-induced transient state of YBa2Cu2O6+x in which transport perpendicular to the Cu-O planes becomes highly coherent. This effect is achieved by excitation with mid-infrared optical pulses, tuned to the resonant frequency of apical oxygen vibrations, which modulate both lattice and electronic properties. Below the superconducting transition temperature Tc, the equilibrium signatures of superconducting interlayer coupling are enhanced. Most strikingly, the optical excitation induces a new reflectivity edge at higher frequency than the equilibrium Josephson plasma resonance, with a concomitant enhancement of the low frequency imaginary conductivity. Above Tc, the incoherent equilibrium conductivity becomes highly coherent, with the appearance of a reflectivity edge and a positive imaginary conductivity that increases with decreasing frequency. These features are observed up to room temperature in YBa2Cu2O6.45 and YBa2Cu2O6.5. The data above Tc can be fitted by hypothesizing that the light re-establishes a transient superconducting state over only a fraction of the solid, with a lifetime of a few picoseconds. Non-superconducting transport could also explain these observations, although one would have to assume transient carrier mobilities near 10^4 cm^2/(V.sec) at 100 K, with a density of charge carriers similar to the below Tc superfluid density. Our results are indicative of highly unconventional non-equilibrium physics and open new prospects for optical control of complex solids.

Pressure-induced phase transition and superconductivity in YBa2Cu4O8

We investigate the pressure and temperature dependence of the lattice dynamics of the underdoped, stoichiometric, high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu4O8 by means of Raman spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. This system undergoes a reversible pressure-induced structural phase transition around 10 GPa to a collapsed orthorhombic structure, that is well reproduced by the calculation. The coupling of the B1g-like buckling phonon mode to the electronic continuum is used to probe superconductivity. In the low pressure phase, self-energy effects through the superconducting transition renormalize this phonon, and the amplitude of this renormalization strongly increases with pressure. Whereas our calculation indicates that this mode's coupling to the electronic system is only marginally affected by the structural phase transition, the aforementioned renormalization is completely suppressed in the high pressure phase, demonstrating that under hydrostatic pressures higher than 10 GPa, superconductivity in YBa2Cu4O8 is greatly weakened or obliterated.

Superconductivity-induced Phonon Renormalization on NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$As

We report a study of the lattice dynamics in superconducting NaFeAs (Tc = 8 K) and doped NaFe0.97Co0.03As (Tc = 20 K) using Raman light scattering. Five of the six phonon modes expected from group theory are observed. In contrast with results obtained on iso-structural and iso-electronic LiFeAs, anomalous broadening of Eg(As) and A1g(Na) modes upon cooling is observed in both samples. In addition, in the Co-doped sample, a superconductivity-induced renormalization of the frequency and linewidth of the B1g(Fe) vibration is observed. This renormalization can not be understood within a single band and simple multi-band approaches. A theoretical model that includes the effects of SDW correlations along with sign-changing s-wave pairing state and interband scattering has been developed to explain the observed behavior of the B1g(Fe) mode.

The simultaneous measurement of energy and linear polarization of the scattered radiation in resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering

Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) in the soft x-ray range is an element-specific energy-loss spectroscopy used to probe the electronic and magnetic excitations in strongly correlated solids. In the recent years, RIXS has been progressing very quickly in terms of energy resolution and understanding of the experimental results, but the interpretation of spectra could further improve, sometimes decisively, from a full knowledge of the polarization of incident and scattered photons. Here we present the first implementation, in a high resolution RIXS spectrometer used to analyze the scattered radiation, of a device allowing the measurement of the degree of linear polarization. The system, based on a graded W/B4C multilayer mirror installed in proximity of the CCD detector, has been installed on the AXES spectrometer at the ESRF; it has been fully characterized and it has been used for a demonstration experiment at the Cu L3 edge on a high-Tc superconducting cuprate. The loss in efficiency suffered by the spectrometer equipped with this test facility was a factor 17.5. We propose also a more advanced version, suitable for a routine use on the next generation of RIXS spectrometers and with an overall efficiency up to 10%.

Tunable Charge and Spin Order in PrNiO$_3$ Thin Films and Superlattices

We have used polarized Raman scattering to probe lattice vibrations and charge ordering in 12 nm thick, epitaxially strained PrNiO$_3$ films, and in superlattices of PrNiO$_3$ with the band-insulator PrAlO$_3$. A carefully adjusted confocal geometry was used to eliminate the substrate contribution to the Raman spectra. In films and superlattices under tensile strain, which undergo a metal-insulator transition upon cooling, the Raman spectra reveal phonon modes characteristic of charge ordering. These anomalous phonons do not appear in compressively strained films, which remain metallic at all temperatures. For superlattices under compressive strain, the Raman spectra show no evidence of anomalous phonons indicative of charge ordering, while complementary resonant x-ray scattering experiments reveal antiferromagnetic order associated with a modest increase in resistivity upon cooling. This confirms theoretical predictions of a spin density wave phase driven by spatial confinement of the conduction electrons.

Comparison of charge modulations in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ and YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$

A charge modulation has recently been reported in (Y,Nd)Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ [Ghiringhelli {\em et al.} Science 337, 821 (2013)]. Here we report Cu $L_3$ edge soft x-ray scattering studies comparing the lattice modulation associated with the charge modulation in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ with that associated with the well known charge and spin stripe order in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$. We find that the correlation length in the CuO$_2$ plane is isotropic in both cases, and is $259 \pm 9$ Åfor La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ and $55 \pm 15$ Åfor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$. Assuming weak inter-planar correlations of the charge ordering in both compounds, we conclude that the order parameters of the lattice modulations in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ and YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ are of the same order of magnitude.

Dispersive spin excitations in highly overdoped cuprates revealed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

Using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Cu $L$-absorption edge, we have observed intense, dispersive spin excitations in highly overdoped Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (superconducting $T_c =6$ K), a compound whose normal-state charge transport and thermodynamic properties have been studied extensively and shown to exhibit canonical Fermi-liquid behavior. Complementary RIXS experiments on slightly overdoped Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$ ($T_c =89$ K) and on Y$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ compounds spanning a wide range of doping levels indicate that these excitations exhibit energies and energy-integrated spectral weights closely similar to those of antiferromagnetic magnons in undoped cuprates. The surprising coexistence of Fermi-liquid-like charge excitations and high-energy spin excitations reminiscent of antiferromagnetic insulators in highly overdoped compounds poses a challenge to current theoretical models of the cuprates.

Doping-Dependent Raman Resonance in the Model High-Temperature Superconductor HgBa2CuO4+d

We study the model high-temperature superconductor HgBa2CuO4+d with electronic Raman scattering and optical ellipsometry over a wide doping range. The resonant Raman condition which enhances the scattering cross section of "two-magnon" excitations is found to change strongly with doping, and it corresponds to a rearrangement of inter-band optical transitions in the 1-3 eV range seen by ellipsometry. This unexpected change of the resonance condition allows us to reconcile the apparent discrepancy between Raman and x-ray detection of magnetic fluctuations in superconducting cuprates. Intriguingly, the strongest variation occurs across the doping level where the antinodal superconducting gap reaches its maximum.

Giant phonon anomalies and central peak due to charge density wave formation in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$

The electron-phonon interaction is a major factor influencing the competition between collective instabilities in correlated-electron materials, but its role in driving high-temperature superconductivity in the cuprates remains poorly understood. We have used high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering to monitor low-energy phonons in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ (superconducting $\bf T_c = 61$ K), which is close to a charge density wave (CDW) instability. Phonons in a narrow range of momentum space around the CDW ordering vector exhibit extremely large superconductivity-induced lineshape renormalizations. These results imply that the electron-phonon interaction has sufficient strength to generate various anomalies in electronic spectra, but does not contribute significantly to Cooper pairing. In addition, a quasi-elastic "central peak" due to CDW nanodomains is observed in a wide temperature range above and below $\bf T_c$, suggesting that the gradual onset of a spatially inhomogeneous CDW domain state with decreasing temperature is a generic feature of the underdoped cuprates.

Lattice dynamical signature of charge density wave formation in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6+x

We report a detailed Raman scattering study of the lattice dynamics in detwinned single crystals of the underdoped high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O6+x (x=0.75, 0.6, 0.55 and 0.45). Whereas at room temperature the phonon spectra of these compounds are similar to that of optimally doped YBa2Cu3O6.99, additional Raman-active modes appear upon cooling below ~170-200 K in underdoped crystals. The temperature dependence of these new features indicates that they are associated with the incommensurate charge density wave state recently discovered using synchrotron x-ray scattering techniques on the same single crystals. Raman scattering has thus the potential to explore the evolution of this state under extreme conditions.

Magnetic excitations in stripe-ordered La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ studied using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

The charge and spin correlations in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ (LBCO 1/8) are studied using Cu $L_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). The static charge order (CO) is observed at a wavevector of $(0.24,0)$ and its charge nature confirmed by measuring the dependence of this peak on the incident x-ray polarization. The paramagnon excitation in LBCO 1/8 is then measured as it disperses through the CO wavevector. Within the experimental uncertainty no changes are observed in the paramagnon due to the static CO, and the paramagnon seems to be similar to that measured in other cuprates, which have no static CO. Given that the stripe correlation modulates both the charge and spin degrees of freedom, it is likely that subtle changes do occur in the paramagnon due to CO. Consequently, we propose that future RIXS measurements, realized with higher energy resolution and sensitivity, should be performed to test for these effects.

Momentum-dependent charge correlations in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ superconductors probed by resonant x-ray scattering: Evidence for three competing phases

We have used resonant x-ray scattering to determine the momentum dependent charge correlations in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.55}$ samples with highly ordered chain arrays of oxygen acceptors (ortho-II structure). The results reveal nearly critical, biaxial charge density wave (CDW) correlations at in-plane wave vectors (0.315, 0) and (0, 0.325). The corresponding scattering intensity exhibits a strong uniaxial anisotropy. The CDW amplitude and correlation length are enhanced as superconductivity is weakened by an external magnetic field. Analogous experiments were carried out on a YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ crystal with a dilute concentration of spinless (Zn) impurities, which had earlier been shown to nucleate incommensurate magnetic order. Compared to pristine crystals with the same doping level, the CDW amplitude and correlation length were found to be strongly reduced. These results indicate a three-phase competition between spin-modulated, charge-modulated, and superconducting states in underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$.

Anomalous dependence of the c-axis polarized Fe B$_{1g}$ phonon mode with Fe and Se concentrations in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$

We report an investigation of the lattice dynamical properties in a range of Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ compounds, with special emphasis on the c-axis polarized vibration of Fe with B$_{1g}$ symmetry, a Raman active mode common to all families of Fe-based superconductors. We have carried out a systematic study of the temperature dependence of this phonon mode as a function of Se $x$ and excess Fe $y$ concentrations. In parent compound Fe$_{1+y}$Te, we observe an unconventional broadening of the phonon between room temperature and magnetic ordering temperature $T_N$. The situation smoothly evolves towards a regular anharmonic behavior as Te is substituted for Se and long range magnetic order is replaced by superconductivity. Irrespective to Se contents, excess Fe is shown to provide an additional damping channel for the B$_{1g}$ phonon at low temperatures. We performed Density Functional Theory (DFT) ab-initio calculations within the local density approximation (LDA) to calcuate the phonon frequencies including magnetic polarization and Fe non-stoichiometry in the Virtual Crystal Approximation (VCA). We obtained a good agreement with the measured phonon frequencies in the Fe-deficient samples, while the effects of Fe excess are poorly reproduced. This may be due to excess Fe-induced local magnetism and low energy magnetic fluctuations that can not be treated accurately within these approaches. As recently revealed by neutron scattering and $μ$-SR studies, these phenomena occur in the temperature range where anomalous decay of the B$_{1g}$ phonon is observed, and suggests a peculiar coupling of this mode with local moments and spin fluctuations in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$.

Distinct Charge Orders in the Planes and Chains of Ortho-III-Ordered YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ Superconductors Identified by Resonant Elastic X-ray Scattering

Recently, charge density wave (CDW) order in the CuO$_2$ planes of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ was detected using resonant soft x-ray scattering. An important question remains: is the chain layer responsible for this charge ordering? Here, we explore the energy and polarization dependence of the resonant scattering intensity in a detwinned sample of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.75}$ with ortho-III oxygen ordering in the chain layer. We show that the ortho-III CDW order in the chains is distinct from the CDW order in the planes. The ortho-III structure gives rise to a commensurate superlattice reflection at $Q$=[0.33 0 $L$] whose energy and polarization dependence agrees with expectations for oxygen ordering and a spatial modulation of the Cu valence in the chains. Incommensurate peaks at [0.30 0 $L$] and [0 0.30 $L$] from the CDW order in the planes are shown to be distinct in $Q$ as well as their temperature, energy, and polarization dependence, and are thus unrelated to the structure of the chain layer. Moreover, the energy dependence of the CDW order in the planes is shown to result from a spatial modulation of energies of the Cu 2$p$ to 3$d_{x^2-y^2}$ transition, similar to stripe-ordered 214 cuprates.

Long-range incommensurate charge fluctuations in (Y,Nd)Ba2Cu3O(6+x)

There are increasing indications that superconductivity competes with other orders in cuprate superconductors, but obtaining direct evidence with bulk-sensitive probes is challenging. We have used resonant soft x-ray scattering to identify two-dimensional charge fluctuations with an incommensurate periodicity of $\bf \sim 3.2$ lattice units in the copper-oxide planes of the superconductors (Y,Nd)Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ with hole concentrations $0.09 \leq p \leq 0.13$ per planar Cu ion. The intensity and correlation length of the fluctuation signal increase strongly upon cooling down to the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$; further cooling below $T_c$ abruptly reverses the divergence of the charge correlations. In combination with prior observations of a large gap in the spin excitation spectrum, these data indicate an incipient charge-density-wave instability that competes with superconductivity.

Long-range transfer of electron-phonon coupling in oxide superlattices

The electron-phonon interaction is of central importance for the electrical and thermal properties of solids, and its influence on superconductivity, colossal magnetoresistance, and other many-body phenomena in correlated-electron materials is currently the subject of intense research. However, the non-local nature of the interactions between valence electrons and lattice ions, often compounded by a plethora of vibrational modes, present formidable challenges for attempts to experimentally control and theoretically describe the physical properties of complex materials. Here we report a Raman scattering study of the lattice dynamics in superlattices of the high-temperature superconductor $\bf YBa_2 Cu_3 O_7$ and the colossal-magnetoresistance compound $\bf La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_{3}$ that suggests a new approach to this problem. We find that a rotational mode of the MnO$_6$ octahedra in $\bf La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_{3}$ experiences pronounced superconductivity-induced lineshape anomalies, which scale linearly with the thickness of the $\bf YBa_2 Cu_3 O_7$ layers over a remarkably long range of several tens of nanometers. The transfer of the electron-phonon coupling between superlattice layers can be understood as a consequence of long-range Coulomb forces in conjunction with an orbital reconstruction at the interface. The superlattice geometry thus provides new opportunities for controlled modification of the electron-phonon interaction in complex materials.

Raman Scattering Study of the Lattice Dynamics of Superconducting LiFeAs

We report an investigation of the lattice dynamical properties of LiFeAs using inelastic light scattering. Five out of the six expected phonon modes are observed. The temperature evolution of their frequencies and linewidths is in good agreement with an anharmonic-decay model. We find no evidence for substantial electron-phonon coupling, and no superconductivity-induced phonon anomalies.

Thermoelectric Properties of YBa2Cu3O7-(La,Ca)MnO3 Superlattices

We report measurements of the thermoelectric power and electrical resistivity of superlattices composed of the high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) (YBCO) and the metallic ferromagnet La(2/3)Ca(1/3)MnO3 (LCMO) with individual layer thicknesses between 5 and 50 nm. Whereas YBCO and LCMO reference films prepared under the same conditions exhibit negative Seebeck coefficients, in excellent agreement with data on bulk compounds of identical composition, those of all superlattices are positive, regardless of the individual layer thickness. Having ruled out lattice strain and incomplete oxygenation, we attribute the observed sign reversal of the Seebeck coefficient to a long-range electronic reconstruction nucleated at the YBCO-LCMO interfaces.

Intense paramagnon excitations in a large family of high-temperature superconductors

In the search for the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity, intense research has been focused on the evolution of the spin excitation spectrum upon doping from the antiferromagnetic insulating to the superconducting states of the cuprates. Because of technical limitations, the experimental investigation of doped cuprates has been largely focused on low-energy excitations in a small range of momentum space. Here we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to show that a large family of superconductors, encompassing underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ and overdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$, exhibits damped spin excitations (paramagnons) with dispersions and spectral weights closely similar to those of magnons in undoped cuprates. %The results are in excellent agreement with the spin excitations obtained by exact diagonalization of the $\bf t-J$ Hamiltonian on finite-sized clusters. The comprehensive experimental description of this surprisingly simple spectrum permits quantitative tests of magnetic Cooper pairing models. A numerical solution of the Eliashberg equations for the magnetic spectrum of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$ reproduces its superconducting transition temperature within a factor of two, a level of agreement comparable to Eliashberg theories of conventional superconductors.

Relationship among superconductivity, pseudogap, and high-energy magnetic fluctuations in a model high-Tc superconductor from electronic Raman scattering

We use electronic Raman scattering to study the model single-layer cuprate superconductor HgBa2CuO4+d. In an overdoped sample, we observe a pronounced amplitude enhancement of a high-energy peak related to two-magnon excitations in insulating cuprates upon cooling below the critical temperature Tc. This effect is accompanied by the appearance of the superconducting gap and a pairing peak above the gap in the Raman spectrum, and it can be understood as a consequence of feedback of the Cooper pairing interaction on the high-energy magnetic fluctuations. All of these effects occur already above Tc in two underdoped samples, demonstrating a related feedback mechanism associated with the pseudogap.

Understanding the complex phase diagram of uranium: the role of electron-phonon coupling

We report an experimental determination of the dispersion of the soft phonon mode along [1,0,0] in uranium as a function of pressure. The energies of these phonons increase rapidly, with conventional behavior found by 20 GPa, as predicted by recent theory. New calculations demonstrate the strong pressure (and momentum) dependence of the electron-phonon coupling, whereas the Fermi-surface nesting is surprisingly independent of pressure. This allows a full understanding of the complex phase diagram of uranium, and the interplay between the charge-density wave and superconductivity.

Inelastic x-ray scattering investigations of lattice dynamics in SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_y$ superconductors

We report measurements of the phonon density of states as measured with inelastic x-ray scattering in SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_y$ powders. An unexpected strong renormalization of phonon branches around 23 meV is observed as fluorine is substituted for oxygen. Phonon dispersion measurements on SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_y$ single crystals allow us to identify the 21 meV A$_{1g}$ in-phase (Sm,As) and the 26 meV B$_{1g}$ (Fe,O) modes to be responsible for this renormalization, and may reveal unusual electron-phonon coupling through the spin channel in iron-based superconductors.

Inelastic X-ray Scattering Study of superconducting SmFeAs(O$_{1-x}$F$_{y}$) Single Crystals: Evidence for Strong Momentum-Dependent Doping-Induced Renormalizations of Optical Phonons

We report inelastic x-ray scattering experiments on the lattice dynamics in SmFeAsO and superconducting SmFeAsO$_{0.6}$F$_{0.35}$ single crystals. Particular attention was paid to the dispersions along the [100] direction of three optical modes close to 23 meV, polarized out of the FeAs planes. Remarkably, two of these modes are strongly renormalized upon fluorine doping. These results provide significant insight into the energy and momentum dependence of the coupling of the lattice to the electron system and underline the importance of spin-phonon coupling in the superconducting iron-pnictides.
