Transition magnon modes in thin ferromagnetic nanogratings

This work presents micromagnetic simulations in ferromagnetic nanogratings for the full range of directions of an applied in-plane external magnetic field. We focus on the modification of the magnon mode characteristics when the magnetic field orientation is gradually changed between the classical Damon-Eshbach (DE) and backward-volume (BV) geometries. We found that in a specific range of field directions, the magnon mode parameters differ significantly from the parameters in the classical cases, namely, the modes are characterized by complex spatial distributions and have low group velocities. The center of this range corresponds to the direction of the external magnetic field, which gives the maximal nonuniform distribution of the static magnetization in the nanogratings.

Generation of a localized microwave magnetic field by coherent phonons in a ferromagnetic nanograting

A high-amplitude microwave magnetic field localized at the nanoscale is a desirable tool for various applications within the rapidly developing field of nanomagnetism. Here, we drive magnetization precession by coherent phonons in a metal ferromagnetic nanograting and generate ac-magnetic induction with extremely high amplitude (up to $10$ mT) and nanometer scale localization in the grating grooves. We trigger the magnetization by a laser pulse which excites localized surface acoustic waves. The developed technique has prospective uses in several areas of research and technology, including spatially resolved access to spin states for quantum technologies.

Semiclassical analysis of intraband collective excitations in a two-dimensional electron gas with Dirac spectrum

Solving the initial value problem for semiclassical equations that describe two-dimensional electrons with the Dirac spectrum we found that collective excitations of the electrons are composed by a few distinct components of the oscillations. There always exist sustained plasma oscillations with well known plasmon frequency $ω_{pl}(k)$. Additionally there are oscillations with the 'carrier frequency' $ω= v_Fk$ slowly decaying in time according to a power law ($v_F$ and $k$ are the Fermi velocity and wavevector). The reason for onset of these oscillations has a fundamental character related to branching of the polarization function of the Dirac electrons. A strongly anisotropic initial disturbance of the electron distribution generates additional component of undamped oscillations in the form of an electron unidirectional beam which are van Kampen's modes in the Dirac plasma.

Spatially dispersive dynamical response of hot carriers in doped graphene

We study theoretically wave-vector and frequency dispersion of the complex dynamic conductivity tensor (DCT), $σ_{lm}(\mathbf{k}, ω)$, of doped monolayer graphene under a strong dc electric field. For a general analysis, we consider the weak ac field of arbitrary configuration given by two independent vectors, the ac field polarization and the wave vector $\mathbf{k}$. The high-field transport and linear response to the ac field are described on the base of the Boltzmann kinetic equation. We show that the real part of DCT, calculated in the collisionless regime, is not zero due to dissipation of the ac wave, whose energy is absorbed by the resonant Dirac quasiparticles effectively interacting with the wave. The role of the kinematic resonance at $ω= v_F |{\bf k}|$ ($v_{F}$ is the Fermi velocity) is studied in detail taking into account deviation from the linear energy spectrum and screening by the charge carriers. The isopower-density curves and distributions of angle between the ac current density and field vectors are presented as a map which provides clear graphic representation of the DCT anisotropy. Also, the map shows certain ac field configurations corresponding to a negative power density, thereby it indicates regions of terahertz frequency for possible electrical (drift) instability in the graphene system.

THz response of nonequilibrium electrons of highly doped graphene on a polar substrate

High-frequency response of a system with drifting electrons in a highly doped graphene and surface polar optical phonons of a polar substrate is considered. For this interacting system, we obtained a dielectric function, frequencies and decrement/increment of cooperative plasmon-optical phonon oscillations. We found, that the response is significantly depends on the degree of nonequilibrium of the electrons. In particular, interaction between drifting plasmons and surface polar optical phonons leads to an instability of the electron subsystem due to Vavilov-Cherenkov effect. We suggest that the hybrid system - graphene on a polar substrate - is capable to be used in amplifiers or generators of THz electromagnetic radiation.

Interaction between an Isotropic Nanoparticle and Drifting Electrons in a Quantum Well

A hybrid system composed of an isotropic nanoparticle and a semiconductor heterostructure with a quantum well has been considered. The nanoparticle is supposed to be polarizable in an external electric field. A theoretical model of the hybrid system is substantiated and formulated. Exact solutions of the model equations are obtained. The frequencies of charge oscillations in the hybrid system and their damping owing to the dipole--plasmon interaction are found, the damping mechanism being similar to that of Landau damping. The space-time behavior of concentration perturbations in the two-dimensional electron gas is analyzed, and the polarization oscillations of a nanoparticle are studied. The induced polarization of a nanoparticle at nonzero electron drift velocities is found to have a complicated dynamics. In particular, the polarization vector circulates along elliptic trajectories for two of three frequency dispersion branches. If the electric current flows through the quantum well due to an applied electric field, the damping of oscillations in the hybrid system is replaced by their growth in time, which corresponds to the electric instability of the system. New phenomena in hybrid systems can be used to excite the emission of nanoparticles by an electric current and to electrically stimulate the emission in the terahertz spectral range.
