We enlighten relations between the Källén function, allowing in a simple way to distinguish between virtual and real processes involving massive particles, and the dilogarithms occurring as results of loop calculations for such kind of processes.
We provide analytical results for the O(αs) corrections to the polar angle dependence of the longitudinal spin-spin correlation asymmetry in e+e−→qqˉ. For top quark pair production the O(αs) corrections to the longitudinal spin-spin asymmetry are strongly polar angle dependent and can amount up to 4% in the q2-range from above ttˉ threshold up to q2=1000 GeV. The O(αs) radiative corrections to the correlation asymmetry are below 1% in the forward direction where the cross section is largest. In the e+e−→bbˉ case the O(αs) corrections reduce the asymmetry value from its mb=0 value of −100% to approximately −96% for q2-values around the Z peak and are practically independent of the value of the polar angle theta. This reduction can be traced to finite anomalous contributions from residual mass effects which survive the mb→0 limit. We discuss the role of the anomalous contributions and the pattern of how they contribute to spin-flip and non-flip terms.
We calculate the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the perturbative term in the operator product expansion of the spectral functions of light tetraquark currents. By using also configuration space methods we keep the momentum space four-loop calculation to a manageable level. We find that the next-to-leading order corrections to the perturbative term are large and can amount to O(100%). The corrections to the corresponding Borel sum rules, however, are small since the nonperturbative condensate contributions dominate the Borel sum rules.
We discuss the polar angle decay distribution in the decay of on-shell and off-shell polarized (W,Z) gauge bosons into massive quark pairs. In particular for the off-shell decays in H→(W,Z)+(W∗,Z∗)(→q1qˉ2) it is important to keep the masses of the charm and bottom quarks at their finite values since the scale of the problem is not set by mW,Z2 but by the off-shellness of the gauge boson which varies in the range (m1+m2)2≤q2≤(mH−mW,Z)2.
We provide analytical O(αs) results for the three polarized decay structure functions H++,H00 and H−− that describe the decay of a polarized W boson into massive quark--antiquark pairs. As an application we consider the decay t→b+W+ involving the helicity fractions ρmm of the W+ boson followed by the polarized decay $\hbox{$W^+(\uparrow)$}\to q_1\bar{q}_2$ described by the polarized decay structure functions Hmm. We thereby determine the O(αs) polar angle decay distribution of the cascade decay process t→b+W+(→q1qˉ2). As a second example we analyze quark mass and off-shell effects in the cascade decays H→W−+W∗+(→q1qˉ2) and H→Z+Z∗(→qqˉ). For the decays H→W−+W∗+(→cbˉ) and H→Z+Z∗(→bbˉ) we find substantial deviations from the mass-zero approximation in particular in the vicinity of the threshold region.
We review some results obtained by us and others concerning the structure of higher order perturbation series in perturbative QCD and their resummation using the renormalization group equation. We illustrate our results by a number of examples involving hadronic τdecays and e^+ e^- annihilation.
We use configuration space methods to write down one-dimensional integral representations for one- and two-loop sunrise diagrams (also called Bessel moments) which we use to numerically check on the correctness of the second order differential equations for one- and two-loop sunrise diagrams that have recently been discussed in the literature.
We compute next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD corrections to the correlators of interpolating pentaquark currents. We employ modular techniques in configuration space which saves us from the onus of having to do loop calculations. The modular technique is explained in some detail. We present explicit NLO results for several interpolating pentaquark currents that have been written down in the literature. Our modular approach is easily adapted to the case of NLO corrections to multiquark correlators with an arbitrary number of quarks/antiquarks.
We present O(α_s) results on the decays of polarized W^+- and Z bosons into massive quark pairs. The NLO QCD corrections to the polarized decay functions are given up to the second order in the quark mass expansion. We find a surprisingly strong dependence of the NLO polarized decay functions on finite quark mass effects even at the relatively large mass scale of the W^+- and Z bosons. As a main application we consider the decay t -> b + W^+ involving the helicity fractions ρ_{mm} of the W^+ boson followed by the polarized decay W^+(\uparrow) -> q_1 qbar_2 for which we determine the O(α_s) polar angle decay distribution. We also discuss NLO polarization effects in the production/decay process e^+e^- -> Z(\uparrow) -> q qbar.
We present a detailed investigation of the NLO polarization of the top quark in t t-bar production at a polarized linear e^+ e^- collider with longitudinally polarized beams. By appropiately tuning the polarization of the beams one can achieve close to maximal values for the top quark polarization over most of the forward hemisphere for a large range of energies. This is quite welcome since the rate is largest in the forward hemisphere. One can also tune the beam polarization to obtain close to zero polarization over most of the forward hemisphere.
Appreciating the classical understanding of the elementary particle the "dynamical" Poincare algebra is developed. It is shown that the "dynamical" Poincare algebra and the equations of motion of particles with arbitrary spin are gauge invariant and that gauge invariance and relativistic invariance stand on equal footings. A "dynamical" non-minimal interaction is constructed explicitly and the Rarita-Schwinger equation is considered in the framework of this "dynamical" interaction.
We discuss in detail top quark polarization in above-threshold (t \bar t)-production at a polarized linear e^+ e^- collider. We pay particular attention to the minimization and maximization of the polarization of the top quark by tuning the longitudinal polarization of the e^+ and e^- beams. The polarization of the top quark is calculated in full next-to-leading order QCD. We also discuss the beam polarization dependence of the longitudinal spin-spin correlations of the top and antitop quark spins.
In this note we show that a "dynamical" interaction for arbitrary spin can be constructed in a straightforward way if gauge and Lorentz transformations are placed on the same foundation. As Lorentz transformations act on space-time coordinates, gauge transformations are applied to the gauge field. Placing these two transformations on the same ground means that all quantized field like spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 spinors are functions not only of the coordinates but also of the gauge field components. This change of perspective solves a couple of problems occuring for higher spin fields like the loss of causality, bad high-energy properties and the deviation of the gyromagnetic ratio from its constant value g=2 for any spin, as caused by applying the minimal coupling. Starting with a "dynamical" interaction, a non-minimal coupling can be derived which is consistent with causality, the expectation for the gyromagnetic ratio, and well-behaved for high energies. As a consequence, on this stage the (elektromagnetic) gauge field has to be considered as classical field. Therefore, standard quantum field theory cannot be applied. Despite this inconvenience, such a common ground is consistent with an old dream of physicists almost a century ago. Our approach, therefore, indicates a straightforward way to realize this dream.
We discuss the polarization of top quarks produced at a polarized linear e^+ e^- collider. Close-to-maximal values of the top quark polarization can be achieved with longitudinal beam polarizations (h_- = -0.80, h_+ = +0.625) or (h_- = +0.80, h_+ = -0.625) at intermediate beam energies. The option (h_- = -0.80, h_+ = +0.625) has to be preferred since this choice is quite stable against variations of the beam polarization. All our quantitative results have been obtained at NLO QCD.
In searching for indications of new physics scalar particle and unparticle couplings in e^+ e^- \to t\bar t, we consider the role of transversely polarized initial beams at e^+ e^- colliders. By using a general relativistic spin density matrix formalism for describing the particles spin states, we find analytical expressions for the squared amplitude of the process with t or \bar t polarization measured, including the anomalous coupling contributions. Thanks to the transversely polarized initial beams these contributions are first order anomalous coupling corrections to the Standard Model (SM) contributions. We present and analyse the main features of the SM and anomalous coupling contributions. We show how differences between SM and anomalous coupling contributions provide means to search for anomalous coupling manifestations at future e^+ e^- linear colliders.
We consider the spin orentation of the final Z bosons for the processes in the Standard Model. We demonstrate that at the threshold energies of these processes the analytical expressions for the Z boson polarization vectors and alignment tensors coincide (e^+ e^- -> ZH, Zγ) or are very similar (e^+ e^- -> ZZ). In addition, we present interesting symmetry properties for the spin orientation parameters.
In the leading order of the (1/m_b)-expansion in HQET the dominant contribution to the semi-inclusive decays of polarized Lambda_b baryons into the charm-strangeness mesons D_s and D_s^* is given by the partonic process b(up) -> c + (D_s^-, D_s^{*-}). Using standard values for the parameters of the process one expects a rather large branching ratio of approx. 8% into these two channels. In the factorization approximation the semi-inclusive decay of a polarized Lambda_b is governed by three unpolarized and four polarized structure functions for which we determine the nonperturbative O(1/m_b^2) corrections and the O(alpha_s) radiative corrections. We find that the perturbative and nonperturbative corrections amount to approx. 10% and approx. 3%, respectively. The seven structure functions can be measured through an analysis of the joint decay distributions of the process involving the polarization of the Lambda_b and the decays D_s^{*-} -> D_s^- + gamma and D_s^{*-} -> D_s^- + pi^0 for which we provide explicit forms. We also provide numerical results for the Cabibbo suppressed semi-inclusive decays Lambda_b -> X_u + (D_s, D_s^*).
We propose a simple parameterization of the two-point correlator of hadronic electromagnetic currents for the evaluation of the hadronic contributions to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. The parameterization is explicitly done in the Euclidean domain. The model function contains a phenomenological parameter which provides an infrared cutoff to guarantee the smooth behavior of the correlator at the origin in accordance with experimental data in e+ e- annihilation. After fixing a numerical value for this parameter from the leading order hadronic contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment the next-to-leading order results related to the vacuum polarization function are accurately reproduced. The properties of the four-point correlator of hadronic electromagnetic currents as for instance the so-called light-by-light scattering amplitude relevant for the calculation of the muon anomalous magnetic moment are briefly discussed.
We calculate the electroweak and finite width corrections to the decay of an unpolarized top quark into a bottom quark and a W-gauge boson where the helicities of the W are specified as longitudinal, transverse-plus and transverse-minus. Together with the O(αs) corrections these corrections may become relevant for the determination of the mass of the top quark through angular decay measurements.
We calculate the O(alpha_s) radiative corrections to the three spin independent and five spin dependent structure functions that describe the angular decay distribution in the decay of a polarized top quark into a W-boson (followed by the decay W^{+} -> l^{+} + nu_l or by W^{+} -> anti-q + q and a bottom quark. The angular decay distribution is described in cascade fashion, i.e. the decay t(uparrow) -> W^{+} + X_b is analyzed in the top rest system while the subsequent decay W^{+} -> l^{+} + nu_l (or W^{+} -> anti-q + q) is analyzed in the W rest frame. We present our results for the eight O(alpha_s) integrated structure functions in analytical form keeping the mass of the bottom quark finite. In the limit m_b -> 0 the structure function expressions reduce to rather compact forms.
We calculate the low-energy limit of heavy quark current correlators within an expansion in the inverse heavy quark mass. The induced low-energy currents built from the gluon fields corresponding to the initial heavy quark currents are obtained from an effective action for gauge fields in the one-loop approximation at the leading order of the 1/m expansion. Explicit formulae for the low-energy spectra of electromagnetic and tensor heavy quark current correlators are given. Consequences of the appearance of a nonvanishing spectral density below the two-particle threshold for high precision phenomenology of heavy quarks are discussed quantitatively.
We calculate a correction to the electromagnetic current induced by a heavy quark loop. The contribution of this correction to the vacuum polarization function appears at the O(alpha_s^3) order of perturbation theory and has a qualitatively new feature -- its absorptive part starts at zero energy in contrast to other contributions where the absorptive parts start at the two-particle threshold. Our result imposes a constraint on the order n of the moments used in the heavy-quark sum rules, n<4.
We derive recurrence relations for the calculation of multiloop sunset-type diagrams with large powers of massive propagators. The technique is formulated in configuration space and exploits the explicit form of the massive propagator raised to a given power. We write down and evaluate a convenient set of basis integrals. The method is well suited for a numerical evaluation of this class of diagrams. We give explicit analytical formulae for the basis integrals in the asymptotic regime.
We discuss various topics in the theory of heavy baryon decays. Among these are recent applications of the Relativistic Three Quark Model to semileptonic, nonleptonic, one-pion and one-photon transitions among heavy baryons, new higher order perturbative results on the correlator of two heavy baryon currents and on the semi-inclusive decay Λb→Xc+Ds(∗)−.
We calculate the linear and circular polarization of gluons produced in conjunction with massive quarks in the annihilation process e+e−→qqˉG. The linear polarization is calculated in the hadron event plane as well as in the gluon-beam plane. Beam polarization and polar orientation effects are included in our discussion. For typical top pair production energies at the Next-Linear-Collider (NLC) the degree of linear polarization in the hadron event plane remains close to its soft gluon value of 100% over most of the energy spectrum of the gluon. The linear polarization in the gluon-beam plane is generally smaller but peaks toward the hard end of the gluon spectrum. The dependence of the linear polarization on beam polarization and on the polar orientation of the gluon is small. The circular polarization is largest for maximal gluon energies and shows a strong dependence on the longitudinal beam polarization. The longitudinal polarization of the beam may therefore be used to tune the circular polarization of the gluon. The massive quark results are compared with the corresponding results for the massless quark case.
We consider diagonal and non-diagonal QCD sum rules for the ground state heavy baryons to leading order in 1/mQ and at next-to-leading order in αS. In the non-diagonal case we evaluate the eight different two-loop diagrams which determine the perturbative αS-corrections to the Wilson coefficient of the quark condensate in the Operator Product Expansion. The QCD corrections to the non-diagonal sum rules are moderate compared to the QCD corrections in the diagonal case. We also consider constituent type sum rules using constituent type interpolating currents. The obtained results are in reasonable agreement with the corresponding results obtained in the diagonal case. As central values for the bound state energies we find m(ΛQ)−mQ=760MeV and m(ΣQ)−mQ=940MeV. The central values for the residues are given by F(ΛQ)=0.030GeV3 and F(ΣQ)=0.038GeV3.
We exploit the fact that within massless perturbative QCD the same Green's function determines the hadronic contribution to the τ decay width and the moments of the e+e− cross section. This allows one to obtain relations between physical observables in the two processes up to an unprecedented high order of perturbative QCD. A precision measurement of the τ decay width allows one then to predict the first few moments of the spectral density in e+e− annihilations integrated up to s∼mτ2 with high accuracy. The proposed tests are in reach of present experimental capabilities.
We derive QCD sum rules for heavy baryons at leading order in 1/mQ and at next-to-leading order in αs. The calculation involves the evaluation of four different perturbative three-loop diagrams which determine the αs-corrections to the Wilson coefficients of the leading term in the Operator Product Expansion (OPE). From the sum rules we obtain estimates for the masses and the residues of the heavy baryons ΛQ and ΣQ. The perturbative O(αs) corrections to the leading order spectral function amount to about 100, and they shift the calculated values for the baryon masses slightly upward. The residues are shifted upward by about 20−50. For the bound state energy Λˉ given by the difference of the heavy baryon mass and the pole mass of the heavy quark mQ we obtain mΛQ−mQ=780MeV and mΣQ−mQ=950MeV. For the residues we find ∣FΛ∣=0.028GeV3 and ∣FΣ∣=0.039GeV3.
We present the results of an O(alpha_s) calculation of the transverse polarization of top quarks produced in e+e- annihilation. In a first step we determine the transverse polarization of the top with regard to the hadron plane spanned by the (q,bar q,g) system. We then rotate the transverse components of the polarization to the lepton plane spanned by the (q,e+,e-) system. After azimuthal averaging we determine the three remaining inclusive transversely polarized structure functions. Together with the one-loop and Born term contributions they determine the sin(theta) and sin(2*theta) beam-quark polar angle dependence of the transverse polarization. We present analytic and numerical results for the polarized structure functions and the polar angle dependence of the transverse polarization. We briefly comment on the transverse polarization of bottom quarks produced in e+e- annihilation.
