Analytic m-isometries and weighted Dirichlet-type spaces

Corresponding to any $(m-1)$-tuple of semi-spectral measures on the unit circle, a weighted Dirichlet-type space is introduced and studied. We prove that the operator of multiplication by the coordinate function on these weighted Dirichlet-type spaces acts as an analytic $m$-isometry and satisfies a certain set of operator inequalities. Moreover, it is shown that an analytic $m$-isometry which satisfies this set of operator inequalities can be represented as an operator of multiplication by the coordinate function on a weighted Dirichlet-type space induced from an $(m-1)$-tuple of semi-spectral measures on the unit circle. This extends a result of Richter as well as of Olofsson on the class of analytic $2$-isometries. We also prove that all left invertible $m$-concave operators satisfying the aforementioned operator inequalities admit a Wold-type decomposition. This result serves as a key ingredient to our model theorem and also generalizes a result of Shimorin on a class of $3$-concave operators.

Strain driven conducting domain walls in a Mott insulator

Rewritable nanoelectronics offers new perspectives and potential to both fundamental research and technological applications. Such interest has driven the research focus into conducting domain walls: pseudo 2D conducting channels that can be created, positioned, and deleted in situ. However, the study of conductive domain walls is largely limited to wide-gap ferroelectrics, where the conductivity typically arises from changes in charge carrier density, due to screening charge accumulation at polar discontinuities. This work shows that, in narrow-gap correlated insulators with strong charge lattice coupling, local strain gradients can drive enhanced conductivity at the domain walls, removing polar discontinuities as a criteria for conductivity. By combining different scanning probe microscopy techniques, we demonstrate that the domain wall conductivity in GaV4S8 does not follow the established screening charge model but rather arises from the large surface reconstruction across the Jahn-Teller transition and the associated strain gradients across the domain walls. This mechanism can turn any structural, or even magnetic, domain wall conducting, if the electronic structure of the host is susceptible to local strain gradients, drastically expanding the range of materials and phenomena that may be applicable to domain wall based nanoelectronics.

Optical, dielectric, and magnetoelectric properties of ferroelectric and antiferroelectric lacunar spinels

Lacunar spinels with a chemical formula of $AM_4X_8$ form a populous family of narrow-gap semiconductors, which offer a fertile ground to explore correlation and quantum phenomena, including transition between Mott and spin-orbit insulator states, ferro/antiferroelectricity driven by cluster Jahn-Teller effect, and magnetoelectric response of magnetic skyrmions with polar dressing. The electronic and magnetic properties of lacunar spinels are determined to a large extent by their molecular-crystal-like structure. The interplay of electronic correlations with spin-orbit and vibronic couplings leads to a complex electronic structure already on the single-cluster level, which -- together with weaker inter-cluster interactions -- gives rise to a plethora of unconventional correlated states. This review primarily focuses on recent progresses in the field of optical, dielectric, and magnetoelectric properties on lacunar spinels. After introducing the main structural aspects, lattice dynamics and electronic structure of these compounds are discussed on the basis of optical spectroscopy measurements. Dielectric and polarization studies reveal the main characteristics of their low-temperature ferro- or antiferroelectric phases as well as orbital fluctuations in their high-temperature cubic state. Strong couplings between spin, lattice, and orbital degrees of freedom are manifested in singlet formation upon magnetostructural transitions, the emergence of various multiferroic phases, and exotic domain-wall functionalities.

Macroscopic Manifestation of Domain-wall Magnetism and Magnetoelectric Effect in a Néel-type Skyrmion Host

We report a magnetic state in GaV$_4$Se$_8$ which emerges exclusively in samples with mesoscale polar domains and not in polar mono-domain crystals. Its onset is accompanied with a sharp anomaly in the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetic torque, distinct from other anomalies observed also in polar mono-domain samples upon transitions between the cycloidal, the Néel-type skyrmion lattice and the ferromagnetic states. We ascribe this additional transition to the formation of magnetic textures localized at structural domain walls, where the magnetic interactions change stepwise and spin textures with different spiral planes, hosted by neighbouring domains, need to be matched. A clear anomaly in the magneto-current indicates that the domain-wall-confined magnetic states also have strong contributions to the magnetoelectric response. We expect polar domain walls to commonly host such confined magnetic edge states, especially in materials with long wavelength magnetic order.

Temperature dependent magnetic, dielectric and Raman studies of partially disordered La2NiMnO6

We report a detailed magnetic, dielectric and Raman studies on partially disordered and biphasic double perovskite La2NiMnO6. DC and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements show two magnetic anomalies at TC1 ~ 270 K and TC2 ~ 240 K, which may indicate the ferromagnetic ordering of the monoclinic and rhombohedral phases, respectively. A broad peak at a lower temperature (Tsg ~ 70 K) is also observed indicating a spin-glass transition due to partial anti-site disorder of Ni2+ and Mn4+ ions. Unlike the pure monoclinic phase, the biphasic compound exhibits a broad but a clear dielectric anomaly around 270 K which is a signature of magneto-dielectric effect. Temperature-dependent Raman studies between the temperature range 12 K to 300 K in a wide spectral range from 220 cm-1 to 1530 cm-1 reveal a strong renormalization of the first as well as second-order Raman modes associated with the (Ni/Mn)O6 octahedra near TC1 implying a strong spin-phonon coupling. In addition, an anomaly is seen in the vicinity of spin-glass transition temperature in the temperature dependence of the frequency of the anti-symmetric stretching vibration of the octahedra.
