On $T$-characterized subgroups of compact Abelian groups

We say that a subgroup $H$ of an infinite compact Abelian group $X$ is {\it $T$-characterized} if there is a $T$-sequence $\mathbf{u} =\{u_n \}$ in the dual group of $X$ such that $H=\{x\in X: \; (u_n, x)\to 1 \}$. We show that a closed subgroup $H$ of $X$ is $T$-characterized if and only if $H$ is a $G_δ$-subgroup of $X$ and the annihilator of $H$ admits a Hausdorff minimally almost periodic group topology. All closed subgroups of an infinite compact Abelian group $X$ are $T$-characterized if and only if $X$ is metrizable and connected. We prove that every compact Abelian group $X$ of infinite exponent has a $T$-characterized subgroup which is not an $F_σ$-subgroup of $X$ that gives a negative answer to Problem 3.3 in [10].

The Ascoli property for function spaces and the weak topology of Banach and Fréchet spaces

Following [3] we say that a Tychonoff space $X$ is an Ascoli space if every compact subset $\mathcal{K}$ of $C_k(X)$ is evenly continuous; this notion is closely related to the classical Ascoli theorem. Every $k_\mathbb{R}$-space, hence any $k$-space, is Ascoli. Let $X$ be a metrizable space. We prove that the space $C_{k}(X)$ is Ascoli iff $C_{k}(X)$ is a $k_\mathbb{R}$-space iff $X$ is locally compact. Moreover, $C_{k}(X)$ endowed with the weak topology is Ascoli iff $X$ is countable and discrete. Using some basic concepts from probability theory and measure-theoretic properties of $\ell_1$, we show that the following assertions are equivalent for a Banach space $E$: (i) $E$ does not contain isomorphic copy of $\ell_1$, (ii) every real-valued sequentially continuous map on the unit ball $B_{w}$ with the weak topology is continuous, (iii) $B_{w}$ is a $k_\mathbb{R}$-space, (iv) $B_{w}$ is an Ascoli space. We prove also that a Fréchet lcs $F$ does not contain isomorphic copy of $\ell_1$ iff each closed and convex bounded subset of $F$ is Ascoli in the weak topology. However we show that a Banach space $E$ in the weak topology is Ascoli iff $E$ is finite-dimensional. We supplement the last result by showing that a Fréchet lcs $F$ which is a quojection is Ascoli in the weak topology iff either $F$ is finite dimensional or $F$ is isomorphic to the product $\mathbb{K}^{\mathbb{N}}$, where $\mathbb{K}\in\{\mathbb{R},\mathbb{C}\}$.

Topological properties of function spaces $C_k(X,2)$ over zero-dimensional metric spaces $X$

Let $X$ be a zero-dimensional metric space and $X'$ its derived set. We prove the following assertions: (1) the space $C_k(X,2)$ is an Ascoli space iff $C_k(X,2)$ is $k_\mathbb{R}$-space iff either $X$ is locally compact or $X$ is not locally compact but $X'$ is compact, (2) $C_k(X,2)$ is a $k$-space iff either $X$ is a topological sum of a Polish locally compact space and a discrete space or $X$ is not locally compact but $X'$ is compact, (3) $C_k(X,2)$ is a sequential space iff $X$ is a Polish space and either $X$ is locally compact or $X$ is not locally compact but $X'$ is compact, (4) $C_k(X,2)$ is a Fréchet--Urysohn space iff $C_k(X,2)$ is a Polish space iff $X$ is a Polish locally compact space, (5) $C_k(X,2)$ is normal iff $X'$ is separable, (6) $C_k(X,2)$ has countable tightness iff $X$ is separable. In cases (1)-(3) we obtain also a topological and algebraical structure of $C_k(X,2)$.

Networks for the weak topology of Banach and Fréchet spaces

We start the systematic study of Fréchet spaces which are $\aleph$-spaces in the weak topology. A topological space $X$ is an $\aleph_0$-space or an $\aleph$-space if $X$ has a countable $k$-network or a $σ$-locally finite $k$-network, respectively. We are motivated by the following result of Corson (1966): If the space $C_{c}(X)$ of continuous real-valued functions on a Tychonoff space $X$ endowed with the compact-open topology is a Banach space, then $C_{c}(X)$ endowed with the weak topology is an $\aleph_0$-space if and only if $X$ is countable. We extend Corson's result as follows: If the space $E:=C_{c}(X)$ is a Fréchet lcs, then $E$ endowed with its weak topology $σ(E,E')$ is an $\aleph$-space if and only if $(E,σ(E,E'))$ is an $\aleph_0$-space if and only if $X$ is countable. We obtain a necessary and some sufficient conditions on a Fréchet lcs to be an $\aleph$-space in the weak topology. We prove that a reflexive Fréchet lcs $E$ in the weak topology $σ(E,E')$ is an $\aleph$-space if and only if $(E,σ(E,E'))$ is an $\aleph_0$-space if and only if $E$ is separable. We show however that the nonseparable Banach space $\ell_{1}(\mathbb{R})$ with the weak topology is an $\aleph$-space.
