Nonmonotonic magnetic field dependence of remanent ferroelectric polarization in reduced-graphene-oxide-BiFeO$_3$ nanocomposite

In a nanocomposite of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and BiFeO$_3$ (BFO), the remanent ferroelectric polarization is found to follow nonmonotonic magnetic field dependence at room temperature as the applied magnetic field is swept across 0-20 kOe on a pristine sample. The remanent ferroelectric polarization is determined both from direct electrical measurements on an assembly of nanoparticles and powder neutron diffraction patterns recorded under 0-20 kOe field. The nanosized ($\sim$20 nm) particles of BFO are anchored onto the graphene sheets of RGO via Fe-C bonds with concomitant rise in covalency in the Fe-O bonds. The field-dependent competition between the positive and negative magnetoelectric coupling arising from magnetostriction due to, respectively, interface and bulk magnetization appears to be giving rise to the observed nonmonotonic field dependence of polarization. The emergence of Fe-C bonds and consequent change in the magnetic and electronic structure of the interface region has influenced the coupling between ferroelectric and magnetic properties remarkably and thus creates a new way of tuning the magnetoelectric properties via reconstruction of interfaces in nanocomposites or heterostructures of graphene/single-phase-multiferroic systems.

Oxygen vacancy induced electronic structure modification of KTaO$_3$

The observation of metallic interface between band insulators LaAlO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$ has led to massive efforts to understand the origin of the phenomenon as well as to search for other systems hosting such two dimensional electron gases (2-DEG). However, the understanding of the origin of the 2-DEG is very often hindered as several possible mechanisms such as polar catastrophe, cationic intermixing and oxygen vacancy (OV) etc. can be operative simultaneously. The presence of a heavy element makes KTaO$_3$ (KTO) based 2-DEG a potential platform to investigate spin orbit coupling driven novel electronic and magnetic phenomena. In this work, we investigate the sole effect of the OV, which makes KTO metallic. Our detailed \textit{ab initio} calculations not only find partially filled conduction bands in the presence of an OV but also predict a highly localized mid-gap state due to the linear clustering of OVs around Ta. Photoluminescence measurements indeed reveal the existence of such mid-gap state and O $K$-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy finds electron doping in Ta $t_{2g}^*$ antibonding states. This present work suggests that one should be cautious about the possible presence of OVs within KTO substrate in interpreting metallic behavior of KTO based 2-DEG.

Magnetic ordering of the martensite phase in Ni-Co-Mn-Sn-based ferromagnetic shape memory alloys

The magnetic state of low temperature martensite phase in Co-substituted Ni-Mn-Sn-based ferromagnetic shape memory alloys (FSMAs) has been investigated, in view of numerous conflicting reports of occurrences of spin glass (SG), superparamagnetism (SPM) or long range anti-ferromagnetic (AF) ordering. Combination of dc magnetization, ac susceptibility and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) studies provide a clear evidence for AF order in martensitic phase of Ni45Co5Mn38Sn12 alloy and rule out SPM and SG orders. Identical studies on another alloy of close composition of Ni44Co6Mn40Sn10 point to presence of SG order in martensitic phase and absence of SPM behavior, contrary to earlier report. SANS results do show presence of nanometre-sized clusters but they are found to grow in size from 3 nm at 30 K to 11 nm at 300 K, and do not correlate with magnetism in these alloys.

Effect of cobalt substitution on structural, impedance, ferroelectric and magnetic properties of multiferroic Bi_2Fe_4O_9 ceramics

Structural, impedance, ferroelectric and magnetic properties were examined in multiferroic Bi_{2}Fe_{4(1-x)}Co_{4x}O_{9} (0$\leq$x$\leq$0.02) ceramics synthesized via solid-state reaction method. X-ray diffraction analysis and Rietveld refinement showed secondary phase formation (for x$\geq$0.01) which was subsequently confirmed from room temperature Raman spectroscopy study. The frequency dependence of impedance and electric modulus of the material showed the presence of non-Debye type relaxation in all the samples. The values of the activation energies calculated from imaginary impedance and modulus lie in the range of 0.92-0.99 eV which confirmed that the oxygen vacancies play an important role in the conduction mechanism. Moreover, suitable amount of Co substitution significantly enhanced the remnant polarisation (2P_{r}) from 0.1193 $μ$C/cm^{2} (x=0) to 0.2776 $μ$C/cm^{2} (x=0.02). Besides, room temperature M-H measurement showed improved ferromagnetic hysteresis loop for all the modified samples. The remnant magnetization (M_{r}) and coercive field (H_{c}) increased from 0.0007 emu/gm and 42 Oe for x=0 to 0.1401 emu/gm and 296 Oe for x=0.02. The improved ferroelectricity was due to Co 3d-O 2p hybridization and enhanced magnetization originated from the partial substitution of Co^{3+} ions leading to breakdown of balance between the anti-parallel sub lattice magnetization of Fe^{3+} ions.

Structural, optical and complex impedance spectroscopy study of multiferroic Bi2Fe4O9 ceramic

Multiferroic bismuth ferrite Bi_2Fe_4O_9 (BFO) ceramic was synthesized by conventional solid state reaction route. X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement show formation of single phase ceramic with orthorhombic crystal structure (space group Pbam). The morphological study depicted a well-defined grain of size $\simeq$2μm. The optical studies were carried out by using UV-Vis spectrophotometer which shows a band gap of 1.53 eV and a green emission spectrum at 537 is observed in the Photoluminescence study. The frequency dependent dielectric study at various temperature revealed that the dielectric constant decreases with increase in frequency. A noticeable peak shift towards higher frequency with increasing temperature is observed in the frequency dependent dielectric loss plot. The impedance spectroscopy shows a substantial shift in imaginary impedance (Z") peaks toward the high frequency side described that the conduction in material favoring the long range motion of mobile charge carriers. The presence of non-Debye type multiple relaxations has been confirmed by complex modulus analysis. The frequency dependent ac conductivity at different temperatures indicates that the conduction process is thermally activated. The variation of dc conductivity exhibited a negative temperature coefficient of resistance behavior. The activation energy calculated from impedance, modulus and conductivity data confirmed that the oxygen vacancies play a vital role in the conduction mechanism.

Spin-orbital liquid state assisted by singlet-triplet excitation in $J~=~0$ ground state of Ba$_3$ZnIr$_2$O$_9$

Strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effects of heavy $d$-orbital elements have long been neglected in describing the ground states of their compounds thereby overlooking a variety of fascinating and yet unexplored magnetic and electronic states, until recently. The spin-orbit entangled electrons in such compounds can get stabilized into unusual spin-orbit multiplet $J$-states which warrants severe investigations. Here we show using detailed magnetic and thermodynamic studies and theoretical calculations the ground state of Ba$_3$ZnIr$_2$O$_9$, a 6$H$ hexagonal perovskite is a close realisation of the elusive $J$~=~0 state. However, we find that local Ir moments are spontaneously generated due to the comparable energy scales of the singlet-triplet splitting driven by SOC and the superexchange interaction mediated by strong intra-dimer hopping. While the Ir ions within the structural Ir$_2$O$_9$ dimer prefers to form a spin-orbit singlet state (SOS) with no resultant moment, substantial interdimer exchange interactions from a frustrated lattice ensure quantum fluctuations till the lowest measured temperatures and stabilize a spin-orbital liquid phase.

Correlation of magneto-electric coupling with crystal structure in Dy doped hexagonal YMnO3

Coexistence of mutually influencing ferroelectric and magnetic ordering at low temperature in hexagonal phase of rare-earth manganites gives rise to interesting physical phenomena. Here, we report a detailed analysis of powder neutron diffraction (ND) studies on polycrystalline Y1-xDyxMnO3 (x = 0, 0.05) as a function of temperature. Our analysis shows that Dy doping at Y site leads to modification in lattice constants: unit cell shrinks in c direction, but expands in ab plane, unit cell volume increases and effective Mn magnetic moment also reduces. All the Mn-O bond lengths and O-Mn-O bond angles shows significant variations leading to reduction in tilting of MnO5 polyhedra. Dielectric measurements on these samples show that, due to Dy doping, inverse S-shape anomaly shifts to the lower temperature side and magnetoelectric coupling decreases. Magnetic measurements confirm the decrease in the frustration of Mn triangular lattice. Temperature dependent specific heat measurement shows anomaly at Néel temperature (TN) and results indicate a decrease in entropy due to Dy doping. These results are understood in terms of modification in magnetoelectric coupling triggered due to Dy induced strain in Y plane of YMnO3.

Improper Ferroelectricity in Helicoidal Antiferromagnet Cu3Nb2O8

Cu3Nb2O8 is an unusual multiferroic compound that undergoes a series of magnetic ordering at low temperatures. Concurrent development of electric polarization has been reported at TN1 ~25 K corresponding to a non-collinear helicoidal ordering (Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 137205 (2011)). But questions remain on the microscopic origin of such phenomena. In this communication, we report a detailed study of induced polar ordering in Cu3Nb2O8 by performing polarization, magnetization, dielectric constant and heat capacity measurements over a broad range of temperature and magnetic field. The dielectric constant shows suppression in the magnetic field but it does not shift to lower temperature with the application of external field. The appearance of magneto-dielectric effect signifies the contribution of q-dependent magnetic correlation function with enhanced weightage in the presence of magnetic field. This magnetic correlation function is associated with the ferro-axial vector and our overall results support this mechanism for the observation of muliferroicity in Cu3Nb2O8.

Large magnetoelectric coupling in nanoscale BiFeO$_3$ from direct electrical measurements

We report the results of direct measurement of remanent hysteresis loops on nanochains of BiFeO$_3$ at room temperature under zero and $\sim$20 kOe magnetic field. We noticed a suppression of remanent polarization by nearly $\sim$40\% under the magnetic field. The powder neutron diffraction data reveal significant ion displacements under a magnetic field which seems to be the origin of the suppression of polarization. The isolated nanoparticles, comprising the chains, exhibit evolution of ferroelectric domains under dc electric field and complete 180$^o$ switching in switching-spectroscopy piezoresponse force microscopy. They also exhibit stronger ferromagnetism with nearly an order of magnitude higher saturation magnetization than that of the bulk sample. These results show that the nanoscale BiFeO$_3$ exhibits coexistence of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic order and a strong magnetoelectric multiferroic coupling at room temperature comparable to what some of the type-II multiferroics show at a very low temperature.

Unconventional magnetism in the spin-orbit driven Mott insulators Ba3MIr2O9 (M=Sc,Y)

We have carried out detailed bulk and local probe studies on the hexagonal oxides Ba3MIr2O9 (M=Sc,Y) where Ir is expected to have a fractional oxidation state of +4.5. In the structure, Ir-Ir dimers are arranged in an edge shared triangular network parallel to the ab plane. Whereas only weak anomalies are evident in the susceptibility data, clearer anomalies are present in the heat capacity data. Our 45Sc nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) lineshape (first order quadrupole split) is symmetric at room temperature but becomes progressively asymmetric with decreasing temperatures. This is suggestive of distortions in the structure which could arise from progressive tilt/rotation of the IrO6 octahedra with a decrease in temperature T. The 45Sc NMR spectral weight shifts near the reference frequency with decreasing T indicating the development of magnetic singlet regions. Around 10K, a significant change in the spectrum takes place with a large intensity appearing near the reference frequency but with the spectrum remaining multi-peak. It appears from our 45Sc NMR data that in Ba3ScIr2O9 significant disorder is still present below 10K. In the case of Ba3YIr2O9, the 89Y NMR spectral lines are asymmetric at high temperatures but become nearly symmetric (single magnetic environment) below T~70K. Our 89Y spectra and T1 measurements confirm the onset of long range ordering (LRO) from a bulk of the sample at 4K in this compound. Our results suggest that Ba3YIr2O9 might be structurally distorted at room temperature (via, for example, tilt/rotations of the IrO6 octahedra) but becomes progressively a regular triangular lattice with decreasing T. The effective magnetic moments and magnetic entropy changes are strongly reduced in Ba3YIr2O9 as compared to those expected for a S=1/2 system. Similar effects have been found in other iridates which naturally have strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC).

Neutron diffraction evidence for kinetic arrest of first-order magneto-structural phase transitions in some functional magnetic materials

Neutron diffraction measurements, performed in presence of an external magnetic field, have been used to show structural evidence for the kinetic arrest of the first-order phase transition from (i) the high temperature austenite phase to the low temperature martensite phase in the magnetic shape memory alloy Ni37Co11Mn42.5Sn9.5, (ii) the higher temperature ferromagnetic phase to the lower temperature antiferromagnetic phase in the half-doped charge ordered compound La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 and (iii) the formation of a glass-like arrested state (GLAS). The CHUF (cooling and heating under unequal fields) protocol has been used to establish phase coexistence of metastable and equilibrium states of GLAS and also to demonstrate the devitrification of the arrested metastable states in the neutron diffraction patterns. We also explore the field-temperature (H,T) phase diagram for the two compounds, which depicts the kinetic arrest line TK(H). TK is seen to increase as H increases.

Anomalous heat capacity and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of Superconducting FeSe1/2Te1/2

The bulk polycrystalline sample FeSe1/2Te1/2 is synthesized by solid state reaction route in an evacuated sealed quartz tube at 750 oC. The presence of superconductivity is confirmed through magnetization/thermoelectric/resistivity studies. It is found that the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) is around 12 K. Heat capacity (Cp) of superconducting FeSe1-xTex exhibited a hump near Tc, instead of well defined Lambda transition. X-ray Photo electron spectroscopy (XPS) studies revealed well defined positions for divalent Fe, Se and Te but with sufficient hybridization of Fe (2p) and Se/Te (3d) core levels. In particular divalent Fe is shifted to higher BE (binding energy) and Se and Te to lower. The situation is similar to that as observed earlier for famous Cu based HTSc (High Tc superconductors), where Cu (3d) orbital hybridizes with O (2p). We also found the satellite peak of Fe at 712.00 eV, which is attributed to charge carrier localization induced by Fe at 2c site.

Magnetic behavior of Ba_{3}Cu_{3}Sc_{4}O_{12}

The chain-like system Ba_{3}Cu_{3}Sc_4O_{12} has potentially interesting magnetic properties due to the presence of Cu^{2+} and a structure-suggested low-dimensionality. We present magnetization M versus magnetic field H and temperature T, T- and H-dependent heat-capacity C_{p}, ^{45}Sc nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), muon spin rotation (μSR), neutron diffraction measurements and electronic structure calculations for Ba_{3}Cu_{3}Sc_{4}O_{12}. The onset of magnetic long-range antiferromagnetic order at T_{N} ~16 K is consistently evidenced from the whole gamut of our data. A significant sensitivity of T_{N} to the applied magnetic field H (T_{N}~0 K for H=70 kOe) is also reported. Coupled with a ferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature (θ_{CW}~65 K) in the susceptibility (from a 100 K-300 K fit), it is indicative of competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. These indications are corroborated by our density functional theory based electronic structure calculations where we find the presence of significant ferromagnetic couplings between some copper ions whereas AF couplings were present between some others. Our experimental data, backed by our theoretical calculations, rule out one-dimensional magnetic behaviour suggested by the structure and the observed long-range order is due to the presence of non-negligible magnetic interactions between adjacent as well as next-nearest chains.

Atomic scale chemical fluctuation in LaSrVMoO6: A proposed halfmetallic antiferromagnet

Half metallic antiferromagnets (HMAFM) have been proposed theoretically long ago but have not been realized experimentally yet. Recently, a double perovskite compound, LaSrVMoO6, has been claimed to be an almost real HMAFM system. Here, we report detailed experimental and theoretical studies on this compound. Our results reveal that the compound is neither a half metal nor an ordered antiferromagnet. Most importantly, an unusual chemical fluctuation is observed locally, which finally accounts for all the electronic and magnetic properties of this compound.

Glass-like ordering and spatial inhomogeneity of magnetic structure in Ba3FeRu2O9 : The role of Fe/Ru-site disorder

Several doped 6H hexagonal ruthenates, having the general formula Ba3MRu2O9, have been studied over a significant period of time in order to understand the unusual magnetism of ruthenium metal. However, among them, the M=Fe compound appears different since it is observed that unlike others, the 3d Fe ions and 4d Ru ions can easily exchange their crystallographic positions and as a result many possible magnetic interactions become realizable. The present study involving several experimental methods on this compound establish that the magnetic structure of Ba3FeRu2O9 is indeed very different from all other 6H ruthenates. Local structural study reveals that the possible Fe/Ru-site disorder further extends to create local chemical inhomogeneity, affecting the high temperature magnetism of this material. There is a gradual decrease of 57Fe Mössbauer spectral intensity with decreasing temperature (below 100 K), which reveals that there is a large spread in the magnetic ordering temperatures, corresponding to many spatially inhomogeneous regions. However, finally at about 25 K, the whole compound is found to take up a global glass-like magnetic ordering.

Dominance of magnetoelastic coupling in multiferroic hexagonal YMnO_3

Hexagonal YMnO_3 with space group P63cm is one of the rare examples of multiferroic materials that exhibit co-dependence of a robust ferroelectric phase along with antiferromagnetic ordering. This is primarily ascribed to tilting of the MnO_5 polyhedra driven by magnetoelectric coupling. We report on the effect of magnetic field at the atomic level in YMnO_3 by utilizing magnetic field and temperature dependent neutron diffraction measurements. We show that near the Néel temperature the lattice parameters, effective magnetic moment per site, Mn-O bond lengths and O-Mn-O bond angles show large variations and these are further modified in the presence of magnetic field. We observe distinct changes with the application of magnetic field in the paramagnetic state both in atomic positions and in the bulk dielectric constant. Our results provide unambiguous confirmation of the role played by exchange-striction over and above the much studied magnetoelectric coupling in this frustrated antiferromagnet.

Intergrain connectivity and resistive broadening in vortex state: a comparison between MgB2, NbSe2 and Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 superconductors

Magnetoresistance and radio frequency penetration depth techniques are used to study grain connectivity and broadening of superconducting transition. We study and compare these issues in clean polycrytalline samples of three different superconducting systems e.g. MgB2, NbSe2 and Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10. From the rf response, the bulk pinning force constant is evaluated. From high field transport measurements, H-T phase diagram is ascertained for the three systems with varying degrees of fluctuation and connectivity.

Modification of intergrain connectivity, upper critical field anisotropy, and critical current density in ion irradiated MgB2 films

We study the effect of 100 MeV Silicon and 200 MeV Gold ion irradiation on the inter and intra grain properties of superconducting thin films of Magnesium Diboride. Substantial decrease in inter-grain connectivity is observed, depending on irradiation dose and type of ions used. We establish that modification of sigma band scattering mechanism, and consequently the upper critical field and anisotropy, depends on the size and directional properties of the extrinsic defects. Post heavy ion irradiation, the upper critical field shows enhancement at a defect density that is five orders of magnitude less compared to neutron irradiation. The critical current density however is best improved through light ion irradiation.
