Magneto-optical properties of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 ultrathin films

Pulse laser deposited La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 ultrathin films on SrTiO3 substrates were characterized by polar and longitudinal Kerr magneto-optical spectroscopy. An agreement between experimental and theoretical spectra was achieved for a 10.7 nm thick film, while a distinction in the Kerr effect amplitudes was obtained for a 5 nm thick film. This points to the slight suppression of ferromagnetism by interface effects. Nevertheless, the room temperature ferromagnetism of the 5 nm thick film was clearly demonstrated. All the studied films exhibit magneto-optical properties similar to single crystals and thick films, which confirms a fully developed perovskite structure even at 5 nm.

Superconducting proximity effect through graphene from zero field to the Quantum Hall regime

We investigate the superconducting proximity effect through graphene in the long diffusive junction limit, at low and high magnetic field. The interface quality and sample phase coherence lead to a zero resistance state at low temperature, zero magnetic field, and high doping. We find a striking suppression of the critical current near graphene\rq{}s charge neutrality point, which we attribute to specular reflexion of Andreev pairs at the interface of charge puddles. This type of reflexion, specific to the Dirac band structure, had up to now remained elusive. At high magnetic field the use of superconducting electrodes with high critical field enables the investigation of the proximity effect in the Quantum Hall regime. Although the supercurrent is not directly detectable in our two wire configuration, interference effects are visible which may be attributed to the injection of Cooper pairs into edge states.

Tailoring strain in SrTiO3 compound by low energy He+ irradiation

The ability to generate a change of the lattice parameter in a near-surface layer of a controllable thickness by ion implantation of strontium titanate is reported here using low energy He+ ions. The induced strain follows a distribution within a typical near-surface layer of 200 nm as obtained from structural analysis. Due to clamping effect from the underlying layer, only perpendicular expansion is observed. Maximum distortions up to 5-7% are obtained with no evidence of amorphisation at fluences of 1E16 He+ ions/cm2 and ion energies in the range 10-30 keV.
