Demonstration of sub-GV/m Accelerating Field in a Photoemission Electron Gun Powered by Nanosecond $X$-Band Radiofrequency Pulses

Radiofrequency (RF) electron guns operating at high accelerating gradients offer a pathway to producing bright electron bunches. Such beams are expected to revolutionize many areas of science: they could form the backbone of next-generation compact x-ray free-electron lasers or provide coherent ultrafast quantum electron probes. We report on the experimental demonstration of an RF photoemission electron source supporting an accelerating field close to 400~MV/m at the photocathode surface. The gun was operated in an RF transient mode driven by short $\sim 9$~ns X-band (\SI{11.7}{\giga\hertz}) RF pulses. We did not observe any major RF breakdown or significant dark current over a three-week experimental run at high accelerating fields. The demonstrated paradigm provides a viable path to forming relativistic electron beams with unprecedented brightness.

Large-surface-area diamond (111) crystal plates for applications in high-heat-load wavefront-preserving x-ray crystal optics

We report fabrication and results of high-resolution X-ray topography characterization of diamond single crystal plates with a large surface area (10$\times$10 mm$^2$) and (111) crystal surface orientation for applications in high-heat-load X-ray crystal optics. The plates were fabricated by laser cutting of the (111) facets of diamond crystals grown using high-pressure high-temperature method. The intrinsic crystal quality of a selected 3$\times$7~mm$^2$ crystal region of one of the studied samples was found to be suitable for applications in wavefront-preserving high-heat-load crystal optics. The wavefront characterization was performed using sequential X-ray diffraction topography in the pseudo plane wave configuration and data analysis using rocking curve topography. The variation of the rocking curve width and peak position measured with a spatial resolution of 13$\times$13 $μm^2$ over the selected region were found to be less than one microradian.

Measurements of Terahertz Generation in a Metallic, Corrugated Beam Pipe

A method for producing narrow-band THz radiation proposes passing an ultra-relativistic beam through a metallic pipe with small periodic corrugations. We present results of a measurement of such an arrangement at Brookhaven's Accelerator Test Facility (ATF). Our pipe was copper and was 5 cm long; the aperture was cylindrically symmetric, with a 1 mm (radius) bore and a corrugation depth (peak-to-peak) of 60 um. In the experiment we measured both the effect on the beam of the structure wakefield and the spectral properties of the radiation excited by the beam. We began by injecting a relatively long beam compared to the wavelength of the radiation to excite the structure, and then used a downstream spectrometer to infer the radiation wavelength. This was followed by injecting a shorter bunch, and then using an interferometer (also downstream of the corrugated pipe) to measure the spectrum of the induced THz radiation.

Single Crystal Diamond Refractive Lens for Focusing of X-rays in Two Dimensions

We report the fabrication and performance evaluation of single crystal diamond refractive x-ray lenses with a paraboloid of rotation form factor for focusing x-rays in two dimensions simultaneously. The lenses were manufactured using a femtosecond laser micromachining process and tested using x-ray synchrotron radiation. Such lenses were stacked together to form a standard compound refractive lens (CRL). Due to the superior physical properties of the material, diamond CRLs are enabling and indispensable wavefront-preserving primary focusing optics for x-ray free-electron lasers and the next-generation synchrotron storage rings. They can be used for highly efficient refocusing of the extremely bright x-ray sources for secondary optical schemes with limited aperture such as nanofocusing Fresnel zone plates and multilayer Laue lenses.

High Quantum Efficiency Ultrananocrystalline Diamond Photocathode: Negative Electron Affinity Meets $n$-doping

We report results of quantum efficiency (QE) measurements carried out on a 150 nm thick nitrogen-incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond terminated with hydrogen; abbreviated as (N)UNCD:H. (N)UNCD:H demonstrated a QE of $\sim$10$^{-3}$ ($\sim$0.1%) at 254 nm. Moreover, (N)UNCD:H was sensitive in visible light with a QE of $\sim$5$\times$10$^{-8}$ at 405 nm and $\sim$5$\times$10$^{-9}$ at 436 nm. After growth and prior to QE measurements, samples were exposed to air for about 2 hours for transfer and loading. Such design takes advantage of a key combination: 1) H-termination inducing negative electron affinity (NEA) on the (N)UNCD and stabilizies its surface against air exposure; and 2) N-incorporation inducing $n$-type conductivity in intrinsically insulating UNCD.

Experimental Demonstration of Energy Chirp Compensation by a Tunable Dielectric Based Structure

A 60 MeV beam at the BNL Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) was manipulated by a planar tunable de-chirper made out of two 10 cm long dielectric slabs with copper plated backs. While the gap was changed from 5.8 mm to 1 mm, the correlated energy chirp of the low charge electron bunch was reduced from approximately 330 keV/mm to zero. This result is in agreement with simulations. Calculations show that similar devices, properly scaled to account for the expected electron bunch charge and length, can be used to remove residual correlated energy spread at the end of the linacs used for free-electron lasers (FEL). Potentially, this technique could significantly simplify linac design and improve FEL performance.

Experimental demonstration of wakefield effects in a THz planar diamond accelerating structure

We have directly measured THz wakefields induced by a subpicosecond, intense relativistic electron bunch in a diamond loaded accelerating structure via the wakefield acceleration method. We present here the beam test results from the first diamond based structure. Diamond has been chosen for its high breakdown threshold and unique thermoconductive properties. Fields produced by a leading (drive) beam were used to accelerate a trailing (witness) electron bunch which followed the drive bunch at a variable distance. The energy gain of a witness bunch as a function of its separation from the drive bunch describes the time structure of the generated wakefield.

Experimental Observation of Energy Modulation in Electron Beams Passing Through Terahertz Dielectric Wakefield Structures

We report observation of a strong wakefield induced energy modulation in an energy-chirped electron bunch passing through a dielectric-lined waveguide. This modulation can be effectively converted into a spatial modulation forming micro-bunches with a periodicity of 0.5 - 1 picosecond, hence capable of driving coherent THz radiation. The experimental results agree well with theoretical predictions.
