Asymptotic quasinormal modes, echoes, and black hole spectral instability: a brief review

We present a short review of the analytical aspects of recent progress in the study of black hole spectral instability and its potential observational consequences. This topic, inspired by earlier foundational works, has attracted considerable attention in the recent literature. It has been demonstrated that both the low-lying modes and high overtones of black hole quasinormal spectra can be substantially influenced by small deformations in the effective potential of the wave equation that describes black hole perturbations. The temporal evolution of gravitational wave signals is primarily governed by the first few low-lying quasinormal modes. In contrast, the asymptotic behavior of high overtones is closely associated with the phenomenon of black hole echoes. We review relevant studies on spectral instability in both regimes, highlighting their potential to produce substantial observational signatures in gravitational wave data. Additionally, recent proposals of Regge poles and reflectionless modes as alternative stable observables for probing black hole spacetimes are summarized.

On Hyperboloidal Foliations in the Study of Black Hole Quasinormal Modes

In this work, we demonstrate that the hyperboloidal foliation technique, applied to the study of black hole quasinormal modes, where the spatial boundary is shifted from spacelike infinity to the future event horizon and null infinity, is effectively equivalent to the continued fraction approach, in which the asymptotic wave function typically diverges at both ends of spatial infinity. Specifically, a given hyperboloidal slicing, corresponding to a particular choice of coordinates, always uniquely determines a scheme for extracting the asymptotic form of the wave function at the spatial boundary. Owing to the mathematical equivalence, it follows that the efficiency and precision observed using the hyperboloidal approach should be attributed, not to avoiding the pathological behavior at the spatial boundaries, but primarily to other factors, such as the use of Chebyshev grids.

Cuspy and fractured black hole shadows in a toy model with axisymmetry

Cuspy shadow was first reported for hairy rotating black holes, whose metrics deviate significantly from the Kerr one. The non-smooth edge of the shadow is attributed to a transition between different branches of unstable but bounded orbits, known as the fundamental photon orbits, which end up at the light rings. In searching for a minimal theoretical setup to reproduce such a salient feature, in this work, we devise a toy model with axisymmetry, a slowly rotating Kerr black hole enveloped by a thin slowly rotating dark matter shell. Despite its simplicity, we show rich structures regarding fundamental photon orbits explicitly in such a system. We observe two disconnected branches of unstable spherical photon orbits, and the jump between them gives rise to a pair of cusps in the resultant black hole shadow. Besides the cuspy shadow, we explore other intriguing phenomena when the Maxwell construction cannot be established. We find that it is possible to have an incomplete arc of Einstein rings and a "fractured" shadow. The potential astrophysical significance of the corresponding findings is addressed.

Detection of scalar fields by Extreme Mass Ratio Inspirals with a Kerr black hole

We study extreme mass ratio inspirals occurring in modified gravity, for which the system is modeled by a small compact object with scalar charge spiraling into a supermassive Kerr black hole. Besides the tensorial gravitational waves arising from the metric perturbations, radiations are also induced by the scalar field. The relevant metric and scalar perturbations are triggered by the orbital motion of the small object, which give rise to a system of inhomogeneous differential equations under the adiabatic approximation. Such a system of equations is then solved numerically using Green's function furnished by the solutions of the corresponding homogeneous equations. To explore the present scenario from an observational perspective, we investigate how the pertinent observables are dependent on specific spacetime configurations. In this regard, the energy fluxes and the gravitational wave dephasing accumulated during the process are evaluated, as functions of the scalar charge, mass ratio, and spin of the central supermassive black hole. In particular, the presence of additional scalar emission leads to a more significant rate of overall energy loss, which, in turn, decreases the total number of orbital cycles before the small object plunges into the central black hole. Moreover, for a central black hole with a higher spin, the imprints of the scalar charge on the resultant gravitational radiations are found to be more significant, which indicates the possibility of detecting the scalar charge.

Quasinormal modes in two-photon autocorrelation and the geometric-optics approximation

In this work, we study the black hole light echoes in terms of the two-photon autocorrelation and explore their connection with the quasinormal modes. It is shown that the above time-domain phenomenon can be analyzed by utilizing the well-known frequency-domain relations between the quasinormal modes and characteristic parameters of null geodesics. We found that the time-domain correlator, obtained by the inverse Fourier transform, naturally acquires the echo feature, which can be attributed to a collective effect of the asymptotic poles through a weighted summation of the squared modulus of the relevant Green's functions. Specifically, the contour integral leads to a summation taking over both the overtone index and angular momentum. Moreover, the dominant contributions to the light echoes are from those in the eikonal limit, consistent with the existing findings using the geometric-optics arguments. For the Schwarzschild black holes, we demonstrate the results numerically by considering a transient spherical light source. Also, for the Kerr spacetimes, we point out a potential difference between the resulting light echoes using the geometric-optics approach and those obtained by the black hole perturbation theory. Possible astrophysical implications of the present study are addressed.

Spin-induced scalarization of Kerr-Newman black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory

In this paper, we consider the tachyonic instability of Kerr-Newman (KN) black holes in the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar (EMS) theory with nonminimal negative scalar coupling to Maxwell term, and then obtain a bound $(\frac{a}{r_+}\geq0.4142)$ for spin parameter $a$ of KN black hole in the limit of coupling constant $α\rightarrow-\infty$ by using analytical method. In addition, we perform a $(2+1)$-dimensional time evolution of linearized scalar field perturbation on the KN black hole background by implementing the hyperboloidal foliation method numerically in the EMS theory. It recovers the \textit{spontaneous scalarization} phenomenon for KN black hole in some certain regions of the parameter spaces. We further plot corresponding threshold curves $α(a)$ which describe a boundary between bald KN black holes and scalarized spinning black holes in the EMS theory.

$P-V$ criticality of AdS black hole in the Einstein-Maxwell-power-Yang-Mills gravity

We study the $P-V$ critical behaivor of N-dimensional AdS black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-power-Yang-Mills gravity. Our results show the existence of the Van der Waals like small-large black hole phase transitions when taking some special values of charges of the Maxwell and Yang-Mills (YM) fields. Further to calculate the critical exponents of the black holes at the critical point, we find that they are the same as those in the Van der Waals liquid-gas system.

Critical behaviors of black holes in the Einstein-Maxwell gravity with conformal anomaly

We study $P-V$ critical behavior of 4-dimensional AdS black hole in the Einstein-Maxwell gravity with conformal anomaly by treating the cosmological constant as a variable related to the thermodynamic pressure. It shows that there is no phase transition if taking $k=0$ or -1. When the charge $q_1$ of conformal field and the coefficient $α$ satisfy a certain relation, the Van der Waal like phase transition for the spherical black hole can occur in case of the temperature is lower than the small critical temperature or higher than the large one. We also evaluate the critical exponents of the phase transitions and find that the thermodynamic exponents associated with this 4-dimensional AdS black hole coincide with those of the van der Waals fluid.

Quantization of the electromagnetic field outside high-dimensional static black holes and its application outside the Gauss-Bonnet black hole

In present paper, we investigated the quantization of an electromagnetic field in the background of static spherically symmetric d-dimensional spacetime in the Boulware vacuum. We have also calculated the response rate of a static charge outside both d-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole and the GB black hole in the low-frequency regime, which can be expressed as the summation of hypergeometric functions.

Spontaneous emission of a two-level static atom coupling with the electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations outside a high-dimensional Einstein Gauss-Bonnet black hole

In present paper, by using the generalized DDC formalism, we investigate the spontaneous excitation of an static atom interacting with electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations outside a EGB black hole in $d$-dimensions. We find that spontaneous excitation does not occur in Boulware vacuum. The Gauss-Bonnet term has no effect on the stability of the atom. Finally, we discuss the contribution of the coupling constant and dimensional factor to the results in three different kinds of spacetime.

Stable Large-Scale Perturbations in Interacting Dark-Energy Model

It is found that the evolutions of density perturbations on the super-Hubble scales are unstable in the model with dark-sector interaction $Q$ proportional to the energy density of cold dark matter (CDM) $ρ_m$ and constant equation of state parameter of dark energy $w_d$. In this paper, to avoid the instabilities, we suggest a new covariant model for the energy-momentum transfer between DE and CDM. Then we show that the the large-scale instabilities of curvature perturbations can be avoided in our model in the universe filled only by DE and CDM. Furthermore, by including the additional components of radiation and baryons, we calculate the dominant non-adiabatic modes in the radiation era and find that the modes grow in the power law with exponent at the order of unit.

Another Two Dark Energy Models Motivated from Karolyhazy Uncertainty Relation

The K$\acute{\text{a}}$rolyh$\acute{\text{a}}$zy uncertainty relation indicates that there exists the minimal detectable cell $δt^{3}$ over the region $t^3$ in Minkowski spacetime. Due to the energy-time uncertainty relation, the energy of the cell $δt^3$ can not be less $δt^{-1}$. Then we get a new energy density of metric fluctuations of Minkowski spacetime as $δt^{-4}$. Motivated by the energy density, we propose two new dark energy models. One model is characterized by the age of the universe and the other is characterized by the conformal age of the universe. We find that in the two models, the dark energy mimics a cosmological constant in the late time.

New Interaction between Dark Energy and Dark Matter Changes Sign during Cosmological Evolution

It is found by Cai and Su that the interaction between dark energy and cold dark matter is likely to change the sign during the cosmological evolution. Motivated by this, we suggest a new form of interaction between dark energy and dark matter, which changes from negative to positive as the expansion of our universe changes from decelerated to accelerated. We find that the interacting model is consistent with the second law of thermodynamics and the observational constraints. And, we also discuss the unified adiabatic-squared sound speed of the model.

A new metric for rotating black holes in Gauss-Bonnet gravity

This paper presents a new metric and studies slowly rotating Gauss-Bonnet black holes with one nonvanishing angular momentum in five dimensional anti-de Sitter spaces. Taking the angular momentum parameter $a$ up to second order, the slowly rotating black hole solutions are obtained by working directly in the action. In addition, it also finds that this method is applicable in higher order Lovelock gravity.

Bright Chirp-free and Chirped Nonautonomous solitons under Dispersion and Nonlinearity Management

We present a series of chirp-free and chirped analytical nonautonomous soliton solutions to the generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE) with distributed coefficients by Darboux transformation from a trivial seed. For chirpfree nonautonomous soliton, the dispersion management term can change the motion of nonautonomous soliton and do not affect its shape at all. Especially, the classical optical soliton can be presented with variable dispersion term and nonlinearity when there is no gain. For chirped nonautonomous soliton, dispersion management can affect the shape and motion of nonautonomous solitons meanwhile. The periodic dispersion term can be used to control its "breathing" shape, and it does not affect the trajectory of nonautonomous soliton center with a certain condition.

Inflation and New Agegraphic Dark Energy

In the note, we extend the discussion of the new agegraphic dark energy (NADE) model to include the inflation stage. Usually, in the inflation models, for convenience the conformal time $η$ is set to be zero at the end of inflation. This is incompatible with the NADE model since $η=0$ indicates the divergence of NADE. To avoid the difficulty, we can redefine the conformal time as $η+δ$. However, we find that the positive constant $δ$ must be so large that NADE can not become dominated at present time.

Spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of a dust cloud in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity

We explore the gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric dust cloud in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity without a cosmological constant, and obtain three families of LTB-like solutions. It is shown that the Gauss-Bonnet term has a profound influence on the nature of singularities, and the global structure of space-time changes drastically from the analogous general relativistic case. Interestingly, the formation of a naked, massive and uncentral singularity, allowed in 5-dimensional space-time, is forbidden if $D\geq6$. Moreover, such singularity is gravitational strong and a serious counter example to CCH.

Spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of a dust cloud in third order Lovelock Gravity

We investigate the spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of an incoherent dust cloud by considering a LTB type space-time in third order Lovelock Gravity without cosmological constant, and give three families of LTB-like solutions which separately corresponding to hyperbolic, parabolic and elliptic. Notice that the contribution of high order curvature corrections have a profound influence on the nature of the singularity, and the global structure of space-time changes drastically from the analogous general relativistic case. Interestingly, the presence of high order Lovelock terms leads to the formation of massive, naked and time-like singularities in the 7D space-time, which is disallowed in general relativity. Moveover, we point out that the naked singularities in the 7D case may be gravitational weak therefore may not be a serious threat to the cosmic censorship hypothesis, while the naked singularities in the $D\geq8$ inhomogeneous collapse violate the cosmic censorship hypothesis seriously.

Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking Vacuum Energy in Cosmology

In present paper the gravitational effect of spontaneous symmetry breaking vacuum energy density is investigated by subtracting the flat space-time contribution from the energy in the curved space-time. We found that the remain effective energy-momentum tensor is too small to cause the acceleration of the universe although it satisfies the characteristic of the dark energy. However it could provide a promising explanation to the puzzle why the gravitational effect produced by the huge symmetry breaking vacuum energy in the electroweak theory has not been observed, since it has a sufficient small value (smaller than the observed cosmic energy density by a factor $10^{32}$).

Stability of curvature perturbation with new covariant form for energy-momentum transfer in dark sector

It was found that the model with interaction between cold dark matter (CDM) and dark energy (DE) proportional to the energy density of CDM $ρ_m$ and constant equation of state of DE $w_d$ suffered from instabilities of the density perturbations on the supper-Hubble scales. Here we suggest a new covariant model for the energy-momentum transfer between CDM and DE. Then using the covariant model, we analyze the evolution of density perturbations on the supper-Hubble scale. We find that the instabilities can be avoided in the model with constant $w_d$ and interaction proportional to $ρ_m$. Furthermore, we analyze the dominant non-adiabatic mode in the radiation era and find that the mode grows regularly.

Static spherically symmetric star in Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We explore static spherically symmetric stars in the Gauss-Bonnet gravity without cosmological constant, and present an exact internal solution which attaches to the exterior vacuum solution outside stars. It turns out that the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet term with a positive coupling constant completely changes thermal and gravitational energies, and the upper bound of red shift of spectral lines from the surface of stars. Unlike in general relativity, the upper bound of red shift is dependent on the density of stars in our case. Moreover, we have proven that two theorems for judging the stability of equilibrium of stars in general relativity can be hold in Gauss-Bonnet gravity.

Thermodynamics of Third Order Lovelock-Born-Infeld Black Holes

We here explore black holes in the third order Lovelock gravity coupling with nonlinear Born-Infeld electromagnetic field. Considering special second and third order coefficients ($\hatα_2^2=3\hatα_3=α^2$), we analyze the thermodynamics of third order Lovelock-Born-Infeld black holes and, in 7-dimensional AdS space-time, discuss the stability of black holes in different event horizon structures. We find that the cosmological constant $Λ$ plays an important role in the distribution of stable regions of black holes.

Third order Lovelock black holes in flat space

In this paper, we present the asymptotically flat black hole solutions for arbitrary values of coefficients in third order Lovelock gravity, and then derive gravitational mass, Hawking temperature and entropy of the black holes. In addition, based on a Hamilton-Jacobi approach beyond the semiclassical approximation, we compute the corrected temperature and entropy of the third order Lovelock black holes in seven dimensional spacetimes. By considering the coefficients α2 = α and α3 = α2/3, we obtain a special black hole solution. Later, we perform the local and global stability analysis of the black holes with different horizon structures k = \pm1 for coefficient α2 < 0 and α2 > 0, respectively.

Weak Gravity Conjecture and Holographic/Agegraphic Dark Energy

A criterion that should be satisfied in the inflation and quintessence models is motivated from the weak gravity conjecture (WGC) by Huang. However, it is found that the criterion is inconsistent with the Holographic dark energy (HDE) and new agegraphic dark energy (NADE) models. In the note, we firstly show that in the HDE and NADE models the criterion should be be replaced respectively by two new criterions. Secondly, we apply the new criterions indicated by WGC to survey the two models. We find that the contradiction between WGC and the NADE model is removed when the new criterion is used. In the HDE model, we find the effects of the spatial curvature and the interaction should be considered in order to match the new criterion.

Slowly rotating charged black holes in anti-de Sitter third order Lovelock gravity

In this paper, we study slowly rotating black hole solutions in Lovelock gravity (n=3). These exact slowly rotating black hole solutions are obtained in uncharged and charged cases, respectively. Up to the linear order of the rotating parameter a, the mass, Hawking temperature and entropy of the uncharged black holes get no corrections from rotation. In charged case, we compute magnetic dipole moment and gyromagnetic ratio of the black holes. It is shown that the gyromagnetic ratio keeps invariant after introducing the Gauss-Bonnet and third order Lovelock interactions.

Conformal Affine Toda Soliton and Moduli of IIB Superstring on $AdS_5\times S^5$

In this paper we interpret the hidden symmetry of the moduli space of IIB superstring on $AdS_{5}\times S^{5}$ in terms of the chiral embedding in $AdS_{5}$, which turns to be the $\mathbb{CP}^{3}$ conformal affine Toda model. We review how the position $μ$ of poles in the Riemann-Hilbert formulation of dressing transformation and how the value of loop parameters $μ$ in the vertex operator of affine algebra determines the moduli space of the soliton solutions, which describes the moduli space of the Green-Schwarz superstring. We show also how this affine SU(4) symmetry affinize the conformal symmetry in the twistor space, and how a soliton string corresponds to a Robinson congruence with twist and dilation spin coefficients $μ$ of twistor.

Solitons on Noncommutative Torus as Elliptic Algebras and Elliptic Models

For the noncommutative torus ${\cal T}$, in case of the N.C. parameter $θ= \frac{Z}{n}$ and the area of ${\cal T}$ is an integer, we construct the basis of Hilbert space ${\cal H}_n$ in terms of $θ$ functions of the positions $z_i$ of $n$ solitons. The loop wrapping around the torus generates the algebra ${\cal A}_n$. We show that ${\cal A}_n$ is isomorphic to the $Z_n \times Z_n$ Heisenberg group on $θ$ functions. We find the explicit form for the local operators, which is the generators $g$ of an elliptic $su(n)$, and transforms covariantly by the global gauge transformation of the Wilson loop in ${\cal A}_n$. By acting on ${\cal H}_n$ we establish the isomorphism of ${\cal A}_n$ and $g$. Then it is easy to give the projection operators corresponding to the solitons and the ABS construction for generating solitons. We embed this $g$ into the $L$-matrix of the elliptic Gaudin and C.M. models to give the dynamics. For $θ$ generic case, we introduce the crossing parameter $η$ related with $θ$ and the modulus of ${\cal T}$. The dynamics of solitons is determined by the transfer matrix $T$ of the elliptic quantum group ${\cal A}_{τ, η}$, equivalently by the elliptic Ruijsenaars operators $M$. The eigenfunctions of $T$ found by Bethe ansatz appears to be twisted by $η$.
