Log-transform and the weak Harnack inequality for kinetic Fokker-Planck equations

This article deals with kinetic Fokker-Planck equations with essentially bounded coefficients. A weak Harnack inequality for non-negative super-solutions is derived by considering their Log-transform and following S. N. Kruzhkov (1963). Such a result rests on a new weak Poincar{é} inequality sharing similarities with the one introduced by W. Wang and L. Zhang in a series of works about ultraparabolic equations (2009, 2011, 2017). This functional inequality is combined with a classical covering argument recently adapted by L. Silvestre and the second author (2020) to kinetic equations.

Gaussian lower bounds for the Boltzmann equation without cut-off

The study of positivity of solutions to the Boltzmann equation goes back to Carleman (1933), and the initial argument of Carleman was developed byPulvirenti-Wennberg (1997), the second author and Briant (2015). The appearance of a lower bound with Gaussian decay had however remained an open question for long-range interactions (the so-called non-cutoff collision kernels). We answer this question and establish such Gaussian lower bound for solutions to the Boltzmann equation without cutoff, in the case of hard and moderately soft potentials, with spatial periodic conditions, and under the sole assumption that hydrodynamic quantities (local mass, local energy and local entropy density) remain bounded. The paper is mostly self-contained, apart from the uniform upper bound on the solution established by the third author (2016).

The Schauder estimate in kinetic theory with application to a toy nonlinear model

This article is concerned with the Schauder estimate for linear kinetic Fokker-Planck equations with Hölder continuous coefficients. This equation has an hypoelliptic structure. As an application of this Schauder estimate, we prove the global well-posedness of a toy nonlinear model in kinetic theory. This nonlinear model consists in a non-linear kinetic Fokker-Planck equation whose steady states are Maxwellian and whose diffusion in the velocity variable is proportional to the mass of the solution.

The Schauder estimate for kinetic integral equations

We establish interior Schauder estimates for kinetic equations with integro-differential diffusion. We study equations of the form $f_t + v \cdot \nabla_x f = \mathcal L_v f + c$, where $\mathcal L_v$ is an integro-differential diffusion operator of order $2s$ acting in the $v$-variable. Under suitable ellipticity and Hölder continuity conditions on the kernel of $\mathcal L_v$, we obtain an a priori estimate for $f$ in a properly scaled Hölder space.

Flux-limited and classical viscosity solutions for regional control problems

The aim of this paper is to compare two different approaches for regional control problems: the first one is the classical approach, using a standard notion of viscosity solutions, which is developed in a series of works by the three first authors. The second one is more recent and relies on ideas introduced by Monneau and the fourth author for problems set on networks in another series of works, in particular the notion of flux-limited solutions. After describing and even revisiting these two very different points of view in the simplest possible framework, we show how the results of the classical approach can be interpreted in terms of flux-limited solutions. In particular, we give much simpler proofs of three results: the comparison principle in the class of bounded flux-limited solutions of stationary multidimensional Hamilton-Jacobi equations and the identification of the maximal and minimal Ishii's solutions with flux-limited solutions which were already proved by Monneau and the fourth author, and the identification of the corresponding vanishing viscosity limit, already obtained by Vinh Duc Nguyen and the fourth author.

Hölder gradient estimates for a class of singular or degenerate parabolic equations

We prove interior Hölder estimate for the spatial gradients of the viscosity solutions to the singular or degenerate parabolic equation $$ u_t=|\nabla u|^κ\mbox{div} (|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u), $$ where $p\in (1,\infty)$ and $κ\in (1-p,\infty).$ This includes the from $L^\infty$ to $C^{1,α}$ regularity for parabolic $p$-Laplacian equations in both divergence form with $κ=0$, and non-divergence form with $κ=2-p$. This work is a continuation of a paper by the last two authors \cite{JS}.

Self-similar solutions for a fractional thin film equation governing hydraulic fractures

In this paper, self-similar solutions for a fractional thin film equation governing hydraulic fractures are constructed. One of the boundary conditions, which accounts for the energy required to break the rock, involves the toughness coefficient $K\geq 0$. Mathematically, this condition plays the same role as the contact angle condition in the thin film equation. We consider two situations: The zero toughness ($K=0$) and the finite toughness $K\in(0,\infty)$ cases. In the first case, we prove the existence of self-similar solutions with constant mass. In the second case, we prove that for all $K\textgreater{}0$ there exists an injection rate for the fluid such that self-similar solutions exist.

Global Well-Posedness Of A Non-Local Burgers Equation: The Periodic Case

This paper is concerned with the study of a non-local Burgers equation for positive bounded periodic initial data. The equation reads $$ u_t - u |\nabla| u + |\nabla|(u^2) = 0. $$ We construct global classical solutions starting from smooth positive data, and global weak solutions starting from data in $L^\infty$. We show that any weak solution is instantaneously regularized into $C^\infty$. We also describe the long-time behavior of all solutions. Our methods follow several recent advances in the regularity theory of parabolic integro-differential equations.

Hölder continuity of solutions to hypoelliptic equations with bounded measurable coefficients

We prove that $L^2$ weak solutions to hypoelliptic equations with bounded measurable coefficients are Hölder continuous. The proof relies on classical techniques developed by De Giorgi and Moser together with the averaging lemma and regularity transfers developed in kinetic theory. The latter tool is used repeatedly: first in the proof of the local gain of integrability of sub-solutions; second in proving that the gradient with respect to the velocity variable is $L^{2+ε}_{\mathrm{loc}}$; third, in the proof of an "hypoelliptic isoperimetric De Giorgi lemma." To get such a lemma, we develop a new method which combines the classical isoperimetric inequality on the diffusive variable with the structure of the integral curves of the first-order part of the operator. It also uses that the gradient of solutions w.r.t. $v$ is $L^{2+ε}_{\mathrm{loc}}$.

Steady state and long time convergence of spirals moving by forced mean curvature motion

In this paper, we prove the existence and uniqueness of a "steady" spiral moving with forced mean curvature motion. This spiral has a stationary shape and rotates with constant angular velocity. Under appropriate conditions on the initial data, we also show the long time convergence (up to some subsequence in time) of the solution of the Cauchy problem to the steady state. This result is based on a new Liouville result which is of independent interest.

Nonlocal porous medium equation: Barenblatt profiles and other weak solutions

A degenerate nonlinear nonlocal evolution equation is considered; it can be understood as a porous medium equation whose pressure law is nonlinear and nonlocal. We show the existence of sign changing weak solutions to the corresponding Cauchy problem. Moreover, we construct explicit compactly supported self-similar solutions which generalize Barenblatt profiles --- the well-known solutions of the classical porous medium equation.

Electrified thin films: Global existence of non-negative solutions

We consider an equation modeling the evolution of a viscous liquid thin film wetting a horizontal solid substrate destabilized by an electric field normal to the substrate. The effects of the electric field are modeled by a lower order non-local term. We introduce the good functional analysis framework to study this equation on a bounded domain and prove the existence of weak solutions defined globally in time for general initial data (with finite energy).

Large Time Behavior of Periodic Viscosity Solutions for Uniformly Elliptic Integro-Differential Equations

In this paper, we study the large time behavior of solutions of a class of parabolic fully nonlinear integro-differential equations in a periodic setting. In order to do so, we first solve the ergodic problem}(or cell problem), i.e. we construct solutions of the form $λt + v(x)$. We then prove that solutions of the Cauchy problem look like those specific solutions as time goes to infinity. We face two key difficulties to carry out this classical program: (i) the fact that we handle the case of "mixed operators" for which the required ellipticity comes from a combination of the properties of the local and nonlocal terms and (ii) the treatment of the superlinear case (in the gradient variable). Lipschitz estimates previously proved by the authors (2012) and Strong Maximum principles proved by the third author (2012) play a crucial role in the analysis.

Lipschitz Regularity of Solutions for Mixed Integro-Differential Equations

We establish new Hoelder and Lipschitz estimates for viscosity solutions of a large class of elliptic and parabolic nonlinear integro-differential equations, by the classical Ishii-Lions's method. We thus extend the Hoelder regularity results recently obtained by Barles, Chasseigne and Imbert (2011). In addition, we deal with a new class of nonlocal equations that we term mixed integro-differential equations. These equations are particularly interesting, as they are degenerate both in the local and nonlocal term, but their overall behavior is driven by the local-nonlocal interaction, e.g. the fractional diffusion may give the ellipticity in one direction and the classical diffusion in the complementary one.

A Hamilton-Jacobi approach to junction problems and application to traffic flows

This paper is concerned with the study of a model case of first order Hamilton-Jacobi equations posed on a "junction", that is to say the union of a finite number of half-lines with a unique common point. The main result is a comparison principle. We also prove existence and stability of solutions. The two challenging difficulties are the singular geometry of the domain and the discontinuity of the Hamiltonian. As far as discontinuous Hamiltonians are concerned, these results seem to be new. They are applied to the study of some models arising in traffic flows. The techniques developed in the present article provide new powerful tools for the analysis of such problems.

Homogenization of accelerated Frenkel-Kontorova models with $n$ types of particles

We consider systems of ODEs that describe the dynamics of particles. Each particle satisfies a Newton law (including the acceleration term) where the force is created by the interactions with the other particles and with a periodic potential. The presence of a damping term allows the system to be monotone. Our study takes into account the fact that the particles can be different. After a proper hyperbolic rescaling, we show that the solutions to this system of ODEs converge to the solution of a macroscopic homogenized Hamilton-Jacobi equation.

Uniqueness and existence of spirals moving by forced mean curvature motion

In this paper, we study the motion of spirals by mean curvature type motion in the (two dimensional) plane. Our motivation comes from dislocation dynamics; in this context, spirals appear when a screw dislocation line reaches the surface of a crystal. The first main result of this paper is a comparison principle for the corresponding parabolic quasi-linear equation. As far as motion of spirals are concerned, the novelty and originality of our setting and results come from the fact that, first, the singularity generated by the attached end point of spirals is taken into account for the first time, and second, spirals are studied in the whole space. Our second main result states that the Cauchy problem is well-posed in the class of sub-linear weak (viscosity) solutions. We also explain how to get the existence of smooth solutions when initial data satisfy an additional compatibility condition.

Alexandroff-Bakelman-Pucci estimate and Harnack inequality for degenerate/singular fully non-linear elliptic equations

In this paper, we study fully non-linear elliptic equations in non-divergence form which can be degenerate when "the gradient is small". Typical examples are either equations involving the $m$-Laplace operator or Bellman-Isaacs equations from stochastic control problems. We establish an Alexandroff-Bakelman-Pucci estimate and we prove a Harnack inequality for viscosity solutions of such degenerate elliptic equations.

Asymptotic properties of entropy solutions to fractal Burgers equation

We study properties of solutions of the initial value problem for the nonlinear and nonlocal equation u_t+(-\partial^2_x)^{α/2} u+uu_x=0 with alpha in (0,1], supplemented with an initial datum approaching the constant states u+/u- (u_-smaller than u_+) as x goes to +/-infty, respectively. It was shown by Karch, Miao & Xu (SIAM J. Math. Anal. 39 (2008), 1536--1549) that, for alpha in (1,2), the large time asymptotics of solutions is described by rarefaction waves. The goal of this paper is to show that the asymptotic profile of solutions changes for alpha \leq 1. If alpha=1, there exists a self-similar solution to the equation which describes the large time asymptotics of other solutions. In the case alpha \in (0,1), we show that the nonlinearity of the equation is negligible in the large time asymptotic expansion of solutions.

Existence of solutions for a higher order non-local equation appearing in crack dynamics

In this paper, we prove the existence of non-negative solutions for a non-local higher order degenerate parabolic equation arising in the modeling of hydraulic fractures. The equation is similar to the well-known thin film equation, but the Laplace operator is replaced by a Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator, corresponding to the square root of the Laplace operator on a bounded domain with Neumann boundary conditions (which can also be defined using the periodic Hilbert transform). In our study, we have to deal with the usual difficulty associated to higher order equations (e.g. lack of maximum principle). However, there are important differences with, for instance, the thin film equation: First, our equation is nonlocal; Also the natural energy estimate is not as good as in the case of the thin film equation, and does not yields, for instance, boundedness and continuity of the solutions (our case is critical in dimension $1$ in that respect).

Hôlder continuity of solutions of second-order non-linear elliptic integro-differential equations

This paper is concerned with Hölder regularity of viscosity solutions of second-order, fully non-linear elliptic integro-differential equations. Our results rely on two key ingredients: first we assume that, at each point of the domain, either the equation is strictly elliptic in the classical fully non-linear sense, or (and this is the most original part of our work) the equation is strictly elliptic in a non-local non-linear sense we make precise. Next we impose some regularity and growth conditions on the equation. These results are concerned with a large class of integro-differential operators whose singular measures depend on $x$ and also a large class of equations, including Bellman-Isaacs Equations.

Repeated games for eikonal equations, integral curvature flows and non-linear parabolic integro-differential equations

The main purpose of this paper is to approximate several non-local evolution equations by zero-sum repeated games in the spirit of the previous works of Kohn and the second author (2006 and 2009): general fully non-linear parabolic integro-differential equations on the one hand, and the integral curvature flow of an interface (Imbert, 2008) on the other hand. In order to do so, we start by constructing such a game for eikonal equations whose speed has a non-constant sign. This provides a (discrete) deterministic control interpretation of these evolution equations. In all our games, two players choose positions successively, and their final payoff is determined by their positions and additional parameters of choice. Because of the non-locality of the problems approximated, by contrast with local problems, their choices have to "collect" information far from their current position. For integral curvature flows, players choose hypersurfaces in the whole space and positions on these hypersurfaces. For parabolic integro-differential equations, players choose smooth functions on the whole space.

Logarithmic Sobolev inequalities: regularizing effect of Lévy operators and asymptotic convergence in the Lévy-Fokker-Planck equation

In this paper we study some applications of the Lévy logarithmic Sobolev inequality to the study of the regularity of the solution of the fractal heat equation, i. e. the heat equation where the Laplacian is replaced with the fractional Laplacian. It is also used to the study of the asymptotic behaviour of the Lévy-Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process.
