Linear Stability Implies Nonlinear Stability for Faber-Krahn Type Inequalities

For a domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ and a small number $\frak{T} > 0$, let \[ \mathcal{E}_0(Ω) = λ_1(Ω) + {\frak{T}} {\text{tor}}(Ω) = \inf_{u, w \in H^1_0(Ω)\setminus \{0\}} \frac{\int |\nabla u|^2}{\int u^2} + {\frak{T}} \int \frac{1}{2} |\nabla w|^2 - w \] be a modification of the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of $Ω$. It is well-known that over all $Ω$ with a given volume, the only sets attaining the infimum of $\mathcal{E}_0$ are balls $B_R$; this is the Faber-Krahn inequality. The main result of this paper is that, if for all $Ω$ with the same volume and barycenter as $B_R$ and whose boundaries are parametrized as small $C^2$ normal graphs over $\partial B_R$ with bounded $C^2$ norm, \[ \int |u_Ω - u_{B_R}|^2 + |Ω\triangle B_R|^2 \leq C [\mathcal{E}_0(Ω) - \mathcal{E}_0(B_R)] \] (i.e. the Faber-Krahn inequality is linearly stable), then the same is true for any $Ω$ with the same volume and barycenter as $B_R$ without any smoothness assumptions (i.e. it is nonlinearly stable). Here $u_Ω$ stands for an $L^2$-normalized first Dirichlet eigenfunction of $Ω$. Related results are shown for Riemannian manifolds. The proof is based on a detailed analysis of some critical perturbations of Bernoulli-type free boundary problems. The topic of when linear stability is valid, as well as some applications, are considered in a companion paper.

Quantitative Stability for Minimizing Yamabe Metrics

On any closed Riemannian manifold of dimension $n\geq 3$, we prove that if a function nearly minimizes the Yamabe energy, then the corresponding conformal metric is close, in a quantitative sense, to a minimizing Yamabe metric in the conformal class. Generically, this distance is controlled quadratically by the Yamabe energy deficit. Finally, we produce an example for which this quadratic estimate is false.

Rigidity theorems for best Sobolev inequalities

For $n\geq 2$, $p\in(1,n)$, the "best $p$-Sobolev inequality" on an open set $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ is identified with a family $Φ_Ω$ of variational problems with critical volume and trace constraints. When $Ω$ is bounded we prove: (i) for every $n$ and $p$, the existence of generalized minimizers that have at most one boundary concentration point, and: (ii) for $n> 2\,p$, the existence of (classical) minimizers. We then establish rigidity results for the comparison theorem "balls have the worst best Sobolev inequalities" by the first named author and Villani, thus giving the first affirmative answers to a question raised in [MV05].

Anisotropic liquid drop models

We introduce and study certain variants of Gamow's liquid drop model in which an anisotropic surface energy replaces the perimeter. After existence and nonexistence results are established, the shape of minimizers is analyzed. Under suitable regularity and ellipticity assumptions on the surface tension, Wulff shapes are minimizers in this problem if and only if the surface energy is isotropic. In sharp contrast, Wulff shapes are the unique minimizers for certain crystalline surface tensions. We also introduce and study several related liquid drop models with anisotropic repulsion for which the Wulff shape is the minimizer in the small mass regime.

A bridge between Sobolev and Escobar inequalities and beyond

The classical Sobolev and Escobar inequalities are embedded into the same one-parameter family of sharp trace-Sobolev inequalities on half-spaces. Equality cases are characterized for each inequality in this family by tweaking a well-known mass transportation argument and lead to a new comparison theorem for trace Sobolev inequalities. The case $p=2$ corresponds to a family of variational problems on conformally flat metrics which was previously settled by Carlen and Loss with their method of competing symmetries. In this case minimizers interpolate between conformally flat spherical and hyperbolic geometries, passing through the Euclidean geometry defined by the fundamental solution of the Laplacian.

A note on the stability of the Cheeger constant of $N$-gons

The regular $N$-gon provides the minimal Cheeger constant in the class of all $N$-gons with fixed volume. This result is due to a work of Bucur and Fragalà in 2014. In this note, we address the stability of their result in terms of the $L^1$ distance between sets. Furthermore, we provide a stability inequality in terms of the Hausdorff distance between the boundaries of sets in the class of polygons having uniformly bounded diameter. Finally, we show that our results are sharp, both in the exponent of decay and in the notion of distance between sets.
