The BepiColombo SERENA/ELENA Instrument On-Ground Testing with the ELENA Special Check Out Equipment (SCOE)

The neutral particles sensor ELENA (Emitted Low Energy Neutral Atoms) for the ESA/JAXA BepiColombo mission to Mercury (in the SERENA instrument suite) is devoted to measure low energetic neutral atoms. The main goal of the experiment is measuring the sputtering emission from planetary surfaces, from E=20eV up to E=5keV, within 1D (2 deg. x 76 deg. ). ELENA original project had also a particle discrimination system based on Time-of-Flight (TOF) of particles through the shutter on the Micro Channel Plates detector (MCP), it has been withdrawn from the flight model due to design and development problems. The ELENA SCOE is the configuration/testing system of ELENA, it allows to command operations and to set up configuration parameters on the instrument and to monitor the incoming data. The TC/TM simulation/encoding/decoding software is developed respecting the CCSDS/ECSS standards implemented by ESA, and it's SCOS2000 compatible. TC generation, HK data monitoring and basic science data analysis are operated by the SERENA EGSE, developed by the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI), Helsinki, Finland. The data stream outcoming from the EGSE is then preprocessed from TM to user readable formats: FITS and then ASCII csv tables with metadata collected in a detached XML file, called label. This task is performed using the PacketLib, ProcessorLib, and DISCoS (PPD) framework and is going to be used as the first level prototype of the BepiColombo Science Ground Segment processing pipeline, based in ESAC, Madrid, Spain and implemented using the PDS4 data format.

THz ultrastrong light-matter coupling

Cavity photon resonators with ultrastrong light-matter interactions are attracting interest both in semiconductor and superconducting systems displaying the capability to manipulate the cavity quantum electrodynamic ground state with controllable physical properties. Here we review a series of experiments aimed at probing the ultrastrong light-matter coupling regime, where the vacuum Rabi splitting $Ω$ is comparable to the bare transition frequency $ω$ . We present a new platform where the inter-Landau level transition of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) is strongly coupled to the fundamental mode of deeply subwavelength split-ring resonators operating in the mm-wave range. Record-high values of the normalized light-matter coupling ratio $\fracΩω= 0.89$ are reached and the system appears highly scalable far into the microwave range.

High quality factor, fully switchable THz superconducting metasurface

We present a complementary THz metasurface realised with Niobium thin film which displays a quality factor Q=54 and a fully switchable behaviour as a function of the temperature. The switching behaviour and the high quality factor are due to a careful design of the metasurface aimed at maximising the ohmic losses when the Nb is above the critical temperature and minimising the radiative coupling. The superconductor allows the operation of the cavity with an high Q and inductive elements with an high aspect ratio. Comparison with three dimensional finite element simulations highlights the crucial role of the inductive elements and of the kinetic inductance of the Cooper pairs in achieving the high quality factor and the high field enhancement.

Ultrastrong Coupling in the Near-field of Complementary Split Ring Resonators

The ultrastrong light-matter interaction regime was investigated in metallic and superconducting complementary split ring resonators coupled to the cyclotron transition of two dimensional electron gases. The sub-wavelength light confinement and the large optical dipole moment of the cyclotron transition yield record high normalized coupling rates of up to $\frac{Ω_R}{ω_c}=$ 0.87. We observed a blue-shift of both polaritons due to the diamagnetic term of the interaction Hamiltonian.

Universal Response Curve for Nanowire Superconducting Single-Photon Detectors

Using detector tomography, we investigate the detection mechanism in NbN-based superconducting single photon detectors (SSPDs). We demonstrate that the detection probability uniquely depends on a particular linear combination of bias current and energy, for a large variation of bias currents, input energies and detection probabilities, producing a universal detection curve. We obtain this result by studying multiphoton excitations in a nanodetector with a sparsity-based tomographic method that allows factoring out of the optical absorption. We discuss the implication of our model system for the understanding of meander-type SSPDs.

Photon-number resolving detector based on a series array of superconducting nanowires

We present the experimental demonstration of a superconducting photon number resolving detector. It is based on the series connection of N superconducting nanowires, each connected in parallel to an integrated resistor. The device provides a single voltage readout, proportional to the number of photons absorbed in distinct nanowires. Clearly separated output levels corresponding to the detection of n=1-4 photons are observed in a 4-element detector fabricated from an NbN film on GaAs substrate, with a single-photon system quantum efficiency of 2.6% at the wavelength of 1300nm. The series-nanowire structure is promising in view of its scalability to large photon numbers and high efficiencies.

Ultrasensitive N-photon interferometric autocorrelator

We demonstrate a novel method to measure the Nth-order (N=1, 2, 3, 4) interferometric autocorrelation with high sensitivity and temporal resolution. It is based on the combination of linear absorption and nonlinear detection in a superconducting nanodetector, providing much higher efficiency than methods based on all-optical nonlinearities. Its temporal resolution is only limited by the quasi-particle energy relaxation time, which is directly measured to be in the 20 ps range for the NbN films used in this work. We present a general model of interferometric autocorrelation with these nonlinear detectors and discuss the comparison with other approaches and possible improvements.

Nanoscale single- and multi-photon mapping of optical fields

The study of optical phenomena on the subwavelength scale is becoming increasingly important in photonics, particularly in the fields of nanoemitters, photonic crystals and plasmonics. Subwavelength field patterns are evanescent and must thus be investigated with near-field techniques. The light powers emitted by nanoscale sources are extremely low, undermining the traditional approach of scattering a near field to a large (thus noisy) far-field detector. Nanoscale detectors, providing direct sensing in the near-field with small noise due to a small active area, are needed in high-sensitivity, high-resolution near-field imaging and in quantum nanophotonic circuits. Here we report the first nanoscale ~50x50nm2) detector displaying single-photon sensitivity and a nanosecond response. These nanodetectors can also be operated in multi-photon mode, where the detection threshold can be set at N=1, 2, 3 or 4 photons, thus allowing the mapping of photon number statistics on the nanoscale.
