Asymptotics of time-varying processes in continuous-time using locally stationary approximations

We introduce a general theory on stationary approximations for locally stationary continuous-time processes. Based on the stationary approximation, we use $θ$-weak dependence to establish laws of large numbers and central limit type results under different observation schemes. Hereditary properties for a large class of finite and infinite memory transformations show the flexibility of the developed theory. Sufficient conditions for the existence of stationary approximations for time-varying Lévy-driven state space models are derived and compared to existing results. We conclude with comprehensive results on the asymptotic behavior of the first and second order localized sample moments of time-varying Lévy-driven state space models.

Inheritance of strong mixing and weak dependence under renewal sampling

Let $X$ be a continuous-time strongly mixing or weakly dependent process and $T$ a renewal process independent of $X$ with inter-arrival times $τ$. We show general conditions under which the sampled process $(X_{T_i},T_i-T_{i-1})^{\top}$ is strongly mixing or weakly dependent. Moreover, we explicitly compute the strong mixing or weak dependence coefficients of the renewal sampled process and show that exponential or power decay of the coefficients of $X$ is preserved (at least asymptotically). Our results imply that essentially all central limit theorems available in the literature for strongly mixing or weakly dependent processes can be applied when renewal sampled observations of the process $X$ are at disposal.

Optimal investment with time-varying stochastic endowments

This paper considers a utility maximization and optimal asset allocation problem in the presence of a stochastic endowment that cannot be fully hedged through trading in the financial market. After studying continuity properties of the value function for general utility functions, we rely on the dynamic programming approach to solve the optimization problem for power utility investors including the empirically relevant and mathematically challenging case of relative risk aversion larger than one. For this, we argue that the value function is the unique viscosity solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation. The homogeneity of the value function is then used to reduce the HJB equation by one dimension, which allows us to prove that the value function is even a classical solution thereof. Using this, an optimal strategy is derived and its asymptotic behavior in the large wealth regime is discussed.

Moment based estimation for the multivariate COGARCH(1,1) process

For the multivariate COGARCH process, we obtain explicit expressions for the second-order structure of the "squared returns" process observed on an equidistant grid. Based on this, we present a generalized method of moments estimator for its parameters. Under appropriate moment and strong mixing conditions, we show that the resulting estimator is consistent and asymptotically normal. Sufficient conditions for strong mixing, stationarity and identifiability of the model parameters are discussed in detail. We investigate the finite sample behavior of the estimator in a simulation study.

Geometric Ergodicity of Affine Processes on Cones

For affine processes on finite-dimensional cones, we give criteria for geometric ergodicity - that is exponentially fast convergence to a unique stationary distribution. Ergodic results include both the existence of exponential moments of the limiting distribution, where we exploit the crucial affine property, and finite moments, where we invoke the polynomial property of affine semigroups. Furthermore, we elaborate sufficient conditions for aperiodicity and irreducibility. Our results are applicable to Wishart processes with jumps on the positive semidefinite matrices, continuous-time branching processes with immigration in high dimensions, and classical term-structure models for credit and interest rate risk.

A BSDE arising in an exponential utility maximization problem in a pure jump market model

We consider the problem of utility maximization with exponential preferences in a market where the traded stock/risky asset price is modelled as a Lévy-driven pure jump process (i.e. the driving Lévy process has no Brownian component). In this setting, we study the terminal utility optimization problem in the presence of a European contingent claim. We consider in detail the BSDE (backward stochastic differential equation) characterising the value function when using an exponential utility function. First we analyse the well-definedness of the generator. This leads to some conditions on the market model related to conditions for the market to admit no free lunches. Then we give bounds on the candidate optimal strategy. Thereafter, we discuss the example of a cross-hedging problem and, under severe assumptions on the structure of the claim, we give explicit solutions. Finally, we establish an explicit solution for a related BSDE with a suitable terminal condition but a simpler generator.

Limit behaviour of the truncated pathwise Fourier-transformation of Lévy-driven CARMA processes for non-equidistant discrete time observations

This paper considers a continuous time analogue of the classical autoregressive moving average processes, Lévy-driven CARMA processes. First we describe limiting properties of the periodogram by means of the so-called truncated Fourier transform if observations are available continuously. The obtained results are in accordance with their counterparts from the discrete-time case. Then we discuss the numerical approximation of the truncated Fourier transform based on non-equidistant high frequency data. In order to ensure convergence of the numerical approximation to the true value of the truncated Fourier transform a certain control on the maximal distance between observations and the number of observations is needed. We obtain both convergence to the continuous time quantity and asymptotic normality under a high-frequency infinite time horizon limit.

Moment based estimation of supOU processes and a related stochastic volatility model

After a quick review of superpositions of OU (supOU) processes, integrated sup\-OU processes and the supOU stochastic volatility model we estimate these processes by using the generalized method of moments (GMM). We show that the GMM approach yields consistent estimators and that it works very well in practice. Moreover, we discuss the influence of long memory effects.

Derivative pricing under the possibility of long memory in the supOU stochastic volatility model

We consider the supOU stochastic volatility model which is able to exhibit long-range dependence. For this model we give conditions for the discounted stock price to be a martingale, calculate the characteristic function, give a strip where it is analytic and discuss the use of Fourier pricing techniques. Finally, we present a concrete specification with polynomially decaying autocorrelations and calibrate it to observed market prices of plain vanilla options.

A Class of Infinitely Divisible Multivariate and Matrix Gamma Distributions and Cone-valued Generalised Gamma Convolutions

Classes of multivariate and cone valued infinitely divisible Gamma distributions are introduced. Particular emphasis is put on the cone-valued case, due to the relevance of infinitely divisible distributions on the positive semi-definite matrices in applications. The cone-valued class of generalised Gamma convolutions is studied. In particular, a characterisation in terms of an Itô-Wiener integral with respect to an infinitely divisible random measure associated to the jumps of a Lévy process is established. A new example of an infinitely divisible positive definite Gamma random matrix is introduced. It has properties which make it appealing for modelling under an infinite divisibility framework. An interesting relation of the moments of the Lévy measure and the Wishart distribution is highlighted which we suppose to be important when considering the limiting distribution of the eigenvalues .

FunctionaL Regular Variation of Lévy-driven Multivariate Mixed Moving Average Processes

We consider the functional regular variation in the space $\mathbb{D}$ of càdlàg functions of multivariate mixed moving average (MMA) processes of the type $X_t = \int\int f(A, t - s) Λ(d A, d s)$. We give sufficient conditions for an MMA process $(X_t)$ to have càdlàg sample paths. As our main result, we prove that $(X_t)$ is regularly varying in $\mathbb{D}$ if the driving Lévy basis is regularly varying and the kernel function $f$ satisfies certain natural (continuity) conditions. Finally, the special case of supOU processes, which are used, e.g., in applications in finance, is considered in detail.

Limit Theory for the largest eigenvalues of sample covariance matrices with heavy-tails

We study the joint limit distribution of the $k$ largest eigenvalues of a $p\times p$ sample covariance matrix $XX^\T$ based on a large $p\times n$ matrix $X$. The rows of $X$ are given by independent copies of a linear process, $X_{it}=\sum_j c_j Z_{i,t-j}$, with regularly varying noise $(Z_{it})$ with tail index $α\in(0,4)$. It is shown that a point process based on the eigenvalues of $XX^\T$ converges, as $n\to\infty$ and $p\to\infty$ at a suitable rate, in distribution to a Poisson point process with an intensity measure depending on $α$ and $\sum c_j^2$. This result is extended to random coefficient models where the coefficients of the linear processes $(X_{it})$ are given by $c_j(θ_i)$, for some ergodic sequence $(θ_i)$, and thus vary in each row of $X$. As a by-product of our techniques we obtain a proof of the corresponding result for matrices with iid entries in cases where $p/n$ goes to zero or infinity and $α\in(0,2)$.

Multivariate CARMA processes, continuous-time state space models and complete regularity of the innovations of the sampled processes

The class of multivariate Lévy-driven autoregressive moving average (MCARMA) processes, the continuous-time analogs of the classical vector ARMA processes, is shown to be equivalent to the class of continuous-time state space models. The linear innovations of the weak ARMA process arising from sampling an MCARMA process at an equidistant grid are proved to be exponentially completely regular ($β$-mixing) under a mild continuity assumption on the driving Lévy process. It is verified that this continuity assumption is satisfied in most practically relevant situations, including the case where the driving Lévy process has a non-singular Gaussian component, is compound Poisson with an absolutely continuous jump size distribution or has an infinite Lévy measure admitting a density around zero.

Quasi maximum likelihood estimation for strongly mixing state space models and multivariate Lévy-driven CARMA processes

We consider quasi maximum likelihood (QML) estimation for general non-Gaussian discrete-ime linear state space models and equidistantly observed multivariate Lévy-driven continuoustime autoregressive moving average (MCARMA) processes. In the discrete-time setting, we prove strong consistency and asymptotic normality of the QML estimator under standard moment assumptions and a strong-mixing condition on the output process of the state space model. In the second part of the paper, we investigate probabilistic and analytical properties of equidistantly sampled continuous-time state space models and apply our results from the discrete-time setting to derive the asymptotic properties of the QML estimator of discretely recorded MCARMA processes. Under natural identifiability conditions, the estimators are again consistent and asymptotically normally distributed for any sampling frequency. We also demonstrate the practical applicability of our method through a simulation study and a data example from econometrics.

CARMA Processes driven by Non-Gaussian Noise

We present an outline of the theory of certain Lévy-driven, multivariate stochastic processes, where the processes are represented by rational transfer functions (Continuous-time AutoRegressive Moving Average or CARMA models) and their applications in non-Gaussian time series modelling. We discuss in detail their definition, their spectral representation, the equivalence to linear state space models and further properties like the second order structure and the tail behaviour under a heavy-tailed input. Furthermore, we study the estimation of the parameters using quasi-maximum likelihood estimates for the auto-regressive and moving average parameters, as well as how to estimate the driving Lévy process.

On strong solutions for positive definite jump-diffusions

We show the existence of unique global strong solutions of a class of stochastic differential equations on the cone of symmetric positive definite matrices. Our result includes affine diffusion processes and therefore extends considerably the known statements concerning Wishart processes, which have recently been extensively employed in financial mathematics. Moreover, we consider stochastic differential equations where the diffusion coefficient is given by the alpha-th positive semidefinite power of the process itself with 0.5<alpha<1 and obtain existence conditions for them. In the case of a diffusion coefficient which is linear in the process we likewise get a positive definite analogue of the univariate GARCH diffusions.

Option Pricing in Multivariate Stochastic Volatility Models of OU Type

We present a multivariate stochastic volatility model with leverage, which is flexible enough to recapture the individual dynamics as well as the interdependencies between several assets while still being highly analytically tractable. First we derive the characteristic function and give conditions that ensure its analyticity and absolute integrability in some open complex strip around zero. Therefore we can use Fourier methods to compute the prices of multi-asset options efficiently. To show the applicability of our results, we propose a concrete specification, the OU-Wishart model, where the dynamics of each individual asset coincide with the popular Gamma-OU BNS model. This model can be well calibrated to market prices, which we illustrate with an example using options on the exchange rates of some major currencies. Finally, we show that covariance swaps can also be priced in closed form.

Spectral Representation of Multivariate Regularly Varying Lévy and CARMA processes

A spectral representation for regularly varying Lévy processes with index between one and two is established and the properties of the resulting random noise are discussed in detail giving also new insight in the $L^2$-case where the noise is a random orthogonal measure. This allows a spectral definition of multivariate regularly varying Lévy-driven continuous time autoregressive moving average (CARMA) processes. It is shown that they extend the well-studied case with finite second moments and coincide with definitions previously used in the infinite variance case when they apply.

Stationarity and Geometric Ergodicity of BEKK Multivariate GARCH Models

Conditions for the existence of strictly stationary multivariate GARCH processes in the so-called BEKK parametrisation, which is the most general form of multivariate GARCH processes typically used in applications, and for their geometric ergodicity are obtained. The conditions are that the driving noise is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure and zero is in the interior of its support and that a certain matrix built from the GARCH coefficients has spectral radius smaller than one. To establish the results semi-polynomial Markov chains are defined and analysed using algebraic geometry.

Multivariate COGARCH(1,1) processes

Multivariate $\operatorname {COGARCH}(1,1)$ processes are introduced as a continuous-time models for multidimensional heteroskedastic observations. Our model is driven by a single multivariate Lévy process and the latent time-varying covariance matrix is directly specified as a stochastic process in the positive semidefinite matrices. After defining the $\operatorname {COGARCH}(1,1)$ process, we analyze its probabilistic properties. We show a sufficient condition for the existence of a stationary distribution for the stochastic covariance matrix process and present criteria ensuring the finiteness of moments. Under certain natural assumptions on the moments of the driving Lévy process, explicit expressions for the first and second-order moments and (asymptotic) second-order stationarity of the covariance matrix process are obtained. Furthermore, we study the stationarity and second-order structure of the increments of the multivariate $\operatorname {COGARCH}(1,1)$ process and their "squares".

Multivariate supOU processes

Univariate superpositions of Ornstein--Uhlenbeck-type processes (OU), called supOU processes, provide a class of continuous time processes capable of exhibiting long memory behavior. This paper introduces multivariate supOU processes and gives conditions for their existence and finiteness of moments. Moreover, the second-order moment structure is explicitly calculated, and examples exhibit the possibility of long-range dependence. Our supOU processes are defined via homogeneous and factorizable Lévy bases. We show that the behavior of supOU processes is particularly nice when the mean reversion parameter is restricted to normal matrices and especially to strictly negative definite ones. For finite variation Lévy bases we are able to give conditions for supOU processes to have locally bounded càdlàg paths of finite variation and to show an analogue of the stochastic differential equation of OU-type processes, which has been suggested in \cite barndorffnielsen01 in the univariate case. Finally, as an important special case, we introduce positive semi-definite supOU processes, and we discuss the relevance of multivariate supOU processes in applications.
